The Home of the Razorbacks George M. Billingsley Tennis Center

The George M. Billingsley Tennis Center has been the outdoor home of Razorback men’s tennis since its renovation in 2008. The $2.8 million expansion and renovation gives the Razorback men’s and women’s tennis teams a complete facility combining the outdoor courts of the Billingsley Center with the indoor courts of the Dills Indoor Stadium. The outdoor facility includes bleacher seating between the two sets of five courts. Fans can sit in the bleachers and watch matches on either side, or stand on top and view matches on both sides. The renovation includes locker rooms, offices and an indoor club area attached to the Dills Indoor Stadium and connecting the indoor facility with the outdoor facility. The club area includes chair back seats on one side overlooking the Dills Indoor Courts and chair back seats on the other overlooking the Billingsley Center outdoor courts. Other additions include scoreboards for the individual courts and a larger scoreboard on the west end of the north set of outdoor courts which will display the scores from outdoor courts one through six. Unlike many other programs across the country, Arkansas’ tennis teams take advantage of facilities which give them the opportunity to play and practice 365 days a year, regardless of the weather.

Dills Indoor Tennis Courts

The Razorbacks have a proud tradition of providing the best athletic facilities the world can offer, and the Dills Indoor Tennis Courts is no exception. Constructed in 1982, the structure was originally known as the University of Arkansas Track and Tennis Complex. In 2002, the facility was renamed the Dills Indoor Tennis Center and dedicated solely to the netted sport, offering the latest to competitive collegiate tennis athletes of today. The center was renamed and dedicated on April 30, 2002, in honor of Jane Dills Morgan and Nancy Dills Lee, along with Ewell Lee, who made a sizeable donation in the name of Robert “Bob” and Lucile Dills. They were early and long-time supporters of the Razorback program. The center originally included just four courts, but the renovations upped that number to six. Other improvements included a new ceiling and insulation system, 96 new lamps, resurfacing of all the courts and 12 electronic scoreboards that hang from the ceiling. When the building was rededicated, massive internal renovations were made to the complex to provide one of the best facilities in the country. With six courts, the indoor complex proved to be ideal when the somtimes cold, unpredictable weather of Northwest Arkansas prevented matches from being played outside. The speedy courts were just resurfaced this year. The stadium seating of the Dills Indoor Tennis Center puts even the most die-hard tennis enthusiast at ease. With 500+ chair back seats and standing capacity for 200+ more, the Dills Indoor Tennis Center is one of the largest in the country. Large heaters and an insulated ceiling provide a warm environment in even the coldest of winters, allowing athletes to improve their skills all 12 months of the year. The indoor center includes locker rooms for women’s and men’s programs, coaches’ offices and lobby. Prior to the most recent SEC Championship events -- the men in 2008 and the women in 2009, the facility hosted the men’s in 1994 and women’s in 1997.

Michael Hegarty Head Coach 8th Season Auburn, '94

In seven seasons as Arkansas’ head coach, Michael Hegarty has returned the Razorbacks to national prominence with two Southeastern Conference Western Division championships and four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including each of the last three years. Under Hegarty, Arkansas improved from an 8-13 finish his first year in 2004 to 11-11 in 2005 to a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The school’s first ever SEC Western Division titles followed in 2008 and 2009. The ‘08 club advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament while the ‘09 team reached the Round of 16. Last year’s team, despite replacing three players in his singles lineup from the 2009 team, finished 18-10, ranked No. 22 in the nation and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Razorbacks had wins over No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 23 Washington, No. 27 TCU, No. 32 Tulsa and No. 35 Oklahoma. Hegarty was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. In 2009, the Razorbacks were 15-8 and won the SEC West at 8-4. Arkansas beat Oral Roberts and No. 28 TCU in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 3 Duke, 4-2. During the regular season, Hegarty’s team posted wins over No. 13 Kentucky, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 16 Florida and No. 22 LSU. Hegarty was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2008 after going 18-10, winning the SEC West at 9-2 and guiding the Razorbacks to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Also the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year, Arkansas beat No. 46 Wake Forest, No. 14 North Carolina and No. 2 Georgia in the post-season before losing to No. 7 UCLA. During the regular season, Arkansas posted wins over No. 6 Georgia, No. 15 Kentucky and No. 20 Tennessee. Under Hegarty’s tutelage, the Razorbacks have accumulated many individual honors.

Aurelija Miseviciute won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championship title in 2007. Consistently ranked in the top three in the country, Miseviciute repeated as ITA National Indoor Champion in 2008. Arkansas’ most decorated women’s tennis player, Miseviciute, with the help of Hegarty, won an astounding 126 singles matches in her career, earned two All-America and three All-SEC honors, and was a finalist for the Honda Award in 2008 and 2009. Most recently, Anouk Tigu was voted the ITA Central Region Player to Watch in the spring of 2010, and she validated the attention by winning the ITA Central Region championship in the fall of the 2010 season. Also in 2010, Kelsey Sundaram was named the ITA Rookie Player of the Year. Tigu, who was ranked No. 29 in the nation was firstteam All-SEC while Sundaram made the all-freshman team.

Last season, Hegarty, again, finished his team at the top of the conference, earning a second place finish in the Western Division and No. 24 national ranking. Tigu, was also named to her third straight All-SEC team and was a first team honoree for the second straight year. Hegarty’s success has been so prevalent over the past five years that his teams have been ranked in the preseason top-25 for five s

traight season, including the 2012 spring season. Another honoree is Ela Kaluder, who was named the 2007 ITA Player to Watch, an honor that proved prophetic in 2009 when Kaluder was named the ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year. She also earned firstteam All-SEC honors in 2007 and 2008. Not content for his players to succeed only on the court, Hegarty has instilled a strong academic work ethic into his players, believing tennis should go hand-in-hand with a college education. Leading the way in the classroom was Miseviciute, who was named the SEC ScholarAthlete of the Year and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in both 2008 and 2009. Since 2004, Hegarty’s Razorbacks have been named to the SEC Honor Roll a total of 30 times. After a successful college and professional career, Hegarty began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Auburn University, in 1994. After two seasons with the Tigers, Hegarty took his first job at Arkansas, assistant coach of the men’s tennis team under current men’s head coach Robert Cox for a year before taking an assistant coaching position with the Kentucky Wildcats men and women’s programs.

ARKANSAS WOMEN'S TENNIS Hegarty took his first head coaching job at Fresno State in 1997 where he took the west coast by storm. The Bulldogs spent three seasons in the Top 25 with Hegarty and were crowned Western Athletic Conference champions in 1999. For this, Hegarty was named WAC and Region VII Coach of the Year. Before returning to Arkansas, Hegarty served as an assistant coach for the University of Florida men’s tennis team from 2001-2003, helping transform Florida men’s tennis into a national powerhouse. For his work with the Gators, Hegarty was named the ITA Southeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. While playing at Auburn, Hegarty broke the Top 20 in singles in both 1992 and 1993. He was named a two-time academic All-SEC honoree and graduated with a degree in journalism. After graduating and entering the pro circuit, Hegarty was ranked as high as 284th in the world and competed in several worldrenowned tournaments including the 1994 US Open, the Australian Open and the NASDAQ Open. Hegarty and his wife, Mary McDonald, currently reside in Fayetteville with their two children, Theo and Riley.

That match ended 8-6 in favor of the Razorbacks. Tigu and Paulson spent the majority of the season ranked in the top-40 in the nation, getting as high as No. 14, which is where they ended the year. The team also played so well that they advanced to the doubles competition of the NCAA Tournament in Stanford, Calif. They won their first-round matchup against Iowa’s Molnar and Young, who were 35th in the nation, but unfortunately fell in the second round to Florida’s No. 2 team of Alex Cercone and Allie Will, 6-2, 6-3.

2012 PREVIEW

With four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament in their back pockets, the 2012 version of the Razorback women’s tennis team has its goals set for five in a row and beyond. Head coach Michael Hegarty returns four players from a year ago, three of them seniors. Of those players, all four earned double-digit singles wins in the 2011 spring and three earned at least 20 wins. With a lineup full of experience, the 2011 club went 18-10 overall, 6-5 in the Southeastern Conference. Their performance earned them the opportunity to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament at the Billingsley Tennis Center, where they advanced to the second round with a 4-1 win over 47th-ranked Sacramento State. The Razorbacks ended the year ranked No. 22 in the country, and had wins over 13 ranked opponents. Hegarty and the Razorbacks were able to continue with the same performance they have had over the recent years as one of the top teams in the SEC. Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya are the only two players from the Razorback team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2009 and have played in the NCAA Tournament each year since then. Having that senior leadership, along with Stephanie Roy, who transferred in during her freshman year and is now a senior, the Razorbacks should be able to stay in the top-25 and continue to be competitive in the SEC.

Emily Carbone

CLAUDINE PAULSON

A year ago, Carbone finished second on the team in singles wins only to Tigu with 25 overall. The majority of her wins came from the No. 5 position as she will help give the middle of the lineup some firepower during the 2012 spring. Lukomskaya, returns to the club for her senior season as she has won 39 singles matches over the last two seasons. The native of Belarus has been a top of the lineup player for Hegarty over the last couple of years and she will most likely continue that trend this season. Rounding out the seniors, Roy, out of Montreal, Canada, had her best season as a Razorback in 2011. Winning 22 singles matches and 19 doubles matches, she became a fixture at the Nos. 2-4 positions after going 7-0 at the No. 5 spot. With only two full seasons under her belt at Arkansas, Roy will no doubt look to finish her collegiate career on a high note and play for her second straight 20-win season. Claudine Paulson is the lone returning player that is not a senior this season, but after a stellar sophomore campaign, she has established herself as a top player for the Razorbacks.

29

ARKANSASRAZORBACKS.COM Paulson finished the year with 22 wins in singles and teamed up with Anouk Tigu to win 27 doubles matches and a top-15 ranking. Paulson played all her dual matches at the top four positions and even earned spot start at the No. 1 spot against top-ranked Stanford. This season, the Hogs will welcome three newcomers to the team. Sophomores Laurie Gingras and Abby Hayley are both transfers from St. Mary’s University and Fresno State and bring collegiate experience to a tough SEC schedule. Catherine Parenteau will be the lone freshman in 2012, but had a strong fall in 2011 for Arkansas, winning three singles matches and two doubles matches with Gingras. Across the board, the 2012 Razorbacks have experience and depth that will help them go through a tough schedule that features 17 opponents ranked in the preseason top-75. The team will welcome seven of those ranked opponents to the Billingsley Tennis Center this spring as they look to continue as a fixture in the NCAA Tournament and a top team in the SEC.

ARKANSAS WOMEN'S TENNIS

Arkansas' All-Americans

In the span of two seasons, Aurelija Miseviciute rocketed to the top of the collegiate women’s tennis world to become the most decorated and successful women’s tennis player in University of Arkansas history. The two-time All-American, only the third women’s tennis player in school history to earn that status, finished her Arkansas career as the leader in career singles wins (125), career doubles wins (86), career singles winning percentage (.886), singles wins in a season (52) and singles season winning percentage (.897). Miseviciute led Arkansas to back-to-back SEC Western Division titles and led the Razorbacks to their highest team finish in school history in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a return trip in 2009. She began the 2008 season with a preseason ranking of 117 and began her climb when she captured the ITA Indoor Championship in 2007. Miseviciute repeated the feat in 2008. Also that year, she reached the national semifinals in singles -- the highest performance by a Razorback women’s tennis player -- and the NCAA round of 16 in doubles with partner Ela Kaluder. She also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles at the 2009 NCAA Tournament. All of her success was noticed as she was honored at the 2009 SEC Player of the Year. She also garnered first team All-SEC recognition in 2008 and 2009. In the classroom she excelled, being named the 2008 and 2009 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was also named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team in 2008 and was a finalist for the Honda Award for women’s tennis (2008 and 2009).

Aurelija Miseviciute

Maria Pavlidou

Arkansas netted its first two All-Americans in 1999 when Chin Bee Khoo finished the year ranked in the Top 20 and Maria Pavlidou played her way to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla. In 2000, Khoo became the first-ever two-time All-American for the Razorbacks when she advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championships in Malibu, Calif. Khoo was not finished though. In 2001 she became the program’s only three-time AllAmerican when she was seeded in the top 16 of the NCAA Singles Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga.
