Deaf Ministry Uses Sign Language to Share the Gospel By Andrea Finger Deaf Ministries
“People from every nation and tongue … from generation to generation … We worship You. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.”
T
hose worship song lyrics always remind me of a young deaf man who approached me after signing that song. “Do you think God knows sign language?” he asked. I was stunned because I have always thought that God gives us all languages to communicate as the basis of relationship. And so, of course, He would give us sign language, since that’s a vital way for people who are deaf to communicate. Like many other languages, sign language is a complex communication – independent of the English language – that uses signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions and body postures. Just as Italian, French and Spanish languages have their roots in Latin, American Sign Language (ASL) also originates from another root. Approximately 70 percent of American Sign Language is derived from French, in which adjectives often follow nouns and the topic often comes after the time. ASL is also the first language of many deaf people and is said to be the fourth most commonly used language in the United States. But on a deeper level, his question about whether God knows sign language was a reminder that many people who are deaf commonly feel left out and isolated from social activities and experiences

One Small Step toward Belonging
I
ndulge me for just a moment. Take a look at your hand. Wiggle all your fingers. Do you need each of those fingers? What would happen if you lost your thumb? Your thumb is your thumb because of what it is (its appearance, placement on your hand, length and so on) and because of what it does (its functions, range of motion and so on). Its presence and its role are both essential for your hand to work properly. Your thumb belongs to your hand. Your hand belongs to your body. Did you know that Christians belong to Christ and to His people? You may already be deeply embedded in the body of Christ at Mount Dora, Longwood or one of the many other places where Northlanders gather. Or you may still be on the sidelines, unwilling to connect due to fear, insecurity or a spirit of self-sufficiency. But if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you belong to Him and to His people. They are two sides of the same coin. The Holy Spirit clearly reveals this belonging in Scripture. In Romans 1:6, Paul says, “You are among those who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ” (NLT). The Greek literally reads “called of Jesus Christ.” Believers are in Christ, called by Christ, identified in Christ. We belong to Christ. That is the first side of the coin. But the second side is just as true: “And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us
because of this language barrier. To imagine feeling left out at the throne breaks my heart. One of the goals of Northland’s Access Ministries is to share the good news of the Gospel with people of all disabilities, including people who are deaf, helping to remove that language barrier. Each Sunday at 9 a.m. at Northland’s Longwood sanctuary, sign language interpreters team up to communicate the worship experience and sermon to people who are deaf. Each team member must be able to understand complex concepts and summarize them into simple and biblically correct ideas for the deaf congregants to understand. This is done in real time without the aid of pre-sermon notes. In addition, another interpreter leads the deaf congregation in worship, which means each note must be conveyed – whether it’s the beat of the drum or a flourish on
needs all the others” (Romans 12:5, NLT). Did you catch that? Our belonging to God and to people are not two independent concepts. They are bound up together, inextricably tied and connected to each other. This has a profound implication for us. We will only experience deep belonging to Jesus as we pursue belonging to others. You cannot have a vibrant love relationship with God if you are disconnected from the ones that God cares for, especially those within His church. He calls you and me to worship Him by connecting with and serving other people. Romans 12:1 says, “Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.” When you offer yourself to love the people He puts in your life, you are worshiping Him in a worthy manner. Some of you are well down the path of loving and serving others, both within and outside of Northland. But some of you have yet to meaningfully connect with the people in your church, or with people in general. When Sheryl and I began worshiping at Northland in 1995, we didn’t begin to experience connectedness to others until we stepped out and took a Bible class. We made some friends and joined a home group. Encouraged by these new relationships, we began to serve Communion. Then I joined the Benevolence Board. The connections came, the belonging grew, and our worship was made complete. But it didn’t happen until we overcame inertia and shyness and stepped out to connect and serve. Belonging to others is not easy. We won’t always like each other. Personalities and temperaments will clash. Our selfconsciousness and fear of commitment can be real battles that we fight. But belonging to others is real. It’s what we were made for. And you don’t need to let those feelings rule over you. Trust God and what He tells you. Decide to live based on your Creator, not your fears. Renovate your relationship with God by connecting with and serving other people. Attend a Mount Dora Congregational Dinner, take part in a service project, join a small group Bible study, or sign up to serve on Sunday mornings in the church. Collectively, this team of five women represents nearly 90 years of experience working with people who are deaf and communicating to them in their “first” language. Since Northland’s Deaf Ministry began nearly 18 years ago, the services have continued to evolve and expand. While the ministry provides interpreters on Sunday mornings for service, deaf individuals also may arrange for sign language interpreters for Bible studies, classes, workshops and special events by giving the church two weeks’ notice. If you feel called to such a rewarding ministry, we would welcome your face, hands and prayers. Feel
free to introduce yourself to any of the interpreters up front in the sanctuary any Sunday morning. Several different schools, including Seminole Community College, Valencia Community College and the University of Central Florida, offer sign language courses. 5 passion for God’s Kingdom, not Northland, not me, not even their fearless leader, Jacob Hancock, but God. Why? Because it is tough at times, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, occasionally painful and, most importantly, anonymous. Don’t get me wrong; they also have fun, laugh a lot and get to know a totally new set of people in their church. Fathers and sons do it to spend time with each other, and dad gets to model selfless service to his son. But they still have to have some other reason for doing what they are doing, and I think I know what it is – Christ! See, it is easy and simple to serve in a capacity that fits our style, our timing, our comfort level, our passions and our view very week we come and worship God for who of what is needed. Outside These Walls
A
s a team of us served outside the walls of this church last weekend, I saw what God is able to do through us as we are willing to go. A few weeks ago, I mentioned the need for volunteers inside the walls of the church, and many of you stepped up and talked with Derika about your willingness to give yourself to the children of our community. To see the heart of those willing to out and serve is just amazing. Thank you! Thanks to Kip, I believe we will have a project to work on every month. This means we will have the opportunity to help someone who might not be a part of our community yet, but who has a need, and become the Acts 2 church who gave to anyone who had a need. There are so many ways each one of us can serve others in this way. It really only takes opening your eyes and seeing what Christ would see if He were in your neighborhood, or office, or community, and then loving them in such a way that their needs are met. If you are looking for a way to connect with others by serving together on a team with folks from our West Oaks community, talk to Kip Conway after the service, or contact him (407-595-0008 or faithhopelove995@ yahoo.com). Our goal for 2009 is to have enough options throughout the year that all of us will have at least one or two opportunities to serve outside the walls of the church. So as you hear of the different projects we will be working on each month, I challenge you to plug yourself in to at
least one or two. I believe you will be blessed more than how you think you blessed others. Another thing I want you to be aware of is our local Fusion project, April 18 in our own community. I will be writing about this in next week’s paper with details about how you can be involved on the ground floor with this project. It has been truly amazing to see how many other church communities have joined in on this project with us to really become the church of west Orange. We have talked about coming together as the church to work on different things together, and as we have met, we have come up with a few options. One option of serving our community with the church is showing the movie Fireproof. We are offering two opportunities to watch this movie with friends who will benefit from seeing it. We will show it at St. Pauls on February 10, and at Windermere Community Church on February 12, both at 7:30 p.m. Both of these showings are free with the hope that you will take the opportunity to come and see the movie for yourself, but also that you will bring friends. gOd meetS nOrthland’S 2008 BUdget need BY MARC MCMURRIN Executive Director of Operations
G
od walks with us every day, but there are moments when He reveals Himself in such a miraculous way that you can do nothing else but stand in the awe of His glory. Northland had one of those moments on December 31, 2008. Northland was facing a $600,000 shortfall heading into the last week of December. This deficit was understandable in the midst of an economic meltdown in our country. After all, our situation could have been much worse, compared to other churches and ministries around the country. We prayed and trusted in God that He would supply the resources needed to fulfill His purposes through His people. In that last week, day after day, check after check, the money was increasing. We were thrilled that the gap was starting to close, but remained doubtful that such a large shortfall would be met. As we calculated the final figures to close out the year, a miracle had happened. Every dollar that was needed to fulfill the ministry for the year had come in, making us whole. It is hard to describe the immense joy experienced in that moment. There was literal jumping for joy and hollering of praise for what God had done through all of you to make such a
significant difference through His church. The elation was not simply because the numbers got to zero, but because of the realization of all the lives impacted for Christ behind those numbers. Last year was a “transition year” for us, facing the challenge of increased expenses to operate our new facilities, while harnessing the expanded ministry opportunities in front of us. In the face of those challenges, Northland was able to reach further and deeper into our local and global communities as a central point of connection for people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together. Pastor Hunter’s series on “Building a Generous Life” helped all of us to keep the right perspective as we studied what the Word says about how we should manage our resources. In economic times like these, it reminds us that we should not put our trust in the world’s economy, but God’s economy. His plan provides assurance and stability as we see ourselves as managers of His resources. the congregation-wide study “Managing Your Finances God’s Way” will be available again this spring. We still have additional workbooks/ dVds available, which can be picked up for free by those who want to do it as a small group. Additionally, the Crown Financial Ministries and the dave ramsey courses begin as soon as February 1. if you would like more information about these courses and how to get started, please contact Jennifer raymond (jennifer.raymond@northlandchurch. net). Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner.
