RTMP/FLASH Live via RTMP is common and supported by most encoders. ABR is determined by the Player. What you define in Backlot must match the encoder. Ex. Player asks Backlot, “What streams should I look for?” REGULAR RTMP
Standard Player. No playhead as the stream is Live.
ADVANCED WITH DVR
Note the playhead and Go Live button. Content is stored server-side so viewer can jump back in the stream. 17
HLS/HTML5 Live via HTTP is less common and supported by only more recent encoders. ABR is determined by the manifest generated with the encodings. The Player looks for a specific URL and will find all the available encodings in that file. Ex. Player asks for the Playlist and then says, “I see these streams are available.!

GLOSSARY • Adaptive Bitrate Algorithm – Mathematical calculation that determines the appropriate
delivery bitrate based on screen size, video buffer health, available bandwidth and cpu load. • Codec – compression/decompression algorithm specifically for a video (h.264) or audio (AAC) signal • Bitrate - Amount of data in bits per second that can be carried in a video or audio signal path • Bandwidth – Availability of a signal path measured in bits per second • Outbound Bandwidth - Availability of a signal path measured in bits per second that the source live stream will travel over • RTMP – Real Time Messaging Protocol owned and controlled by Adobe is a standard for streaming audio / video data over the internet. • HDS – HTTP Dynamic Streaming is Adobe’s protocol for on demand and live adaptive bitrate video delivery of standards based MP4 media over standard HTTP connections. • HLS – HTTP Live Streaming is Apples’s protocol for on demand and live adaptive bitrate video delivery of standards based MP4 media over standard HTTP connections.
20
GLOSSARY • Encoding Profile – Set of streams that span a range of bitrates to support an adaptive
bitrate algorithm. • Repackaging – The process of extracting audio and video data from a file format and placing it In another file format without re-encoding the data. • Cloud Transcoding – Pay-per-use software as a service to convert a single bitrate source into multiple bitrate streams enabling adaptive bitrate delivery. • DVR – Specifically NAS (network attached storage) DVR (digital video recorder) provides the ability to record and playback video. • Archive – Stored video/audio data typically used for converting live content into VOD (video on demand) content. • Ad-hoc – Live channel with short availability. • Channel – An end to end signal path from the source encoder through the transcoding/ repackaging process to the player • 24/7 Live Linear Channel - Live channel with continuous availability. • Ooyala Live Event Support - Customer has direct phone number to “on call” support technician 21
