ABOUT ME AND THE PROJECT

As a student myself, I fully appreciate the importance of living in a healthy and supporting environment which has been of great importance throughout my studies.

Unfortunately, this may not be the case for every student, both local and foreign and this project was specifically intended to address this issue. The student complex would provide an ideal environment allowing students to socialize with one another whilst enjoying the green spaces the complex offers and most importantly to cater for their specific needs without having to worry about expensive rents.

Students will therefore benefit from this project as it provides the ideal ambience and accommodation, providing them with a stable and welcoming environment during their studies whilst living in dwellings finished off to high standards.

AN IDEA TRANSFORMED INTO A PROJECT

12

INTRODUCTION

This is the site for the proposed student housing complex, located in the area that was formerly known as the Empire football stadium in Gşira – also in close proximity to the University of Malta.

The reason for creating such affordable dwellings in close proximity to the university was to help students cut down on time they would spend looking for a place to rent and also for ease of practicality.

13

Location: Triq l-Imsida, Gżira

14

This is the plan of how the student complex will look like.

Building A and Building B are where the dwellings will be located.

Building C is the multipurpose building which will be six storeys high and will cater for students coming from different courses.

Building D is a sports//games room which will consist of pool tables, table tennis tables and much more.

As can be seen, the area will also make use of lots of open green spaces allowing students to enjoy the outdoors.

16

These are the floor plans for both the bottom and upper layer of the apartment.

Although all the apartments have an internal space area of 27 square meters, the idea was to ensure that these could still provide a spacious dwelling finished off to a high modern standard. Based on a minimalistic design approach, each unit was carefully planned to incorporate several multi-functional pieces of furniture to make best use of the space provided.

This dwelling was based and designed using information gathered by students themselves.

MINIMAL AND SIMPLE CONTEMPORARY AND COMFORTABLE

With students being the main target audience for this project, the aim of this project was to make the end product usable and practical by focusing on the users’ needs and requirements while factoring in human ergonomic design elements.

I hope that after reading through this brochure, you, the student, will not only be able to appreciate the experience of living in these contemporary micro-dwellings but will also provide you with the perfect environment to encourage you to succeed in your studies at university .

Flip through the rest of this brochure to get a better idea of the finishing for the interior of these dwellings.

22 THE DWELLING

When entering the apartment, one is immediately greeted with an open plan design for an enhanced sensation of space.

To the right of the main entrance is a combined living and dining area separated by a peninsular work top that not only provides good working and dining space but also serves to blend both areas seamlessly together. The living area is equipped with a full HD television, overhead and floor storage space and a three seater sofa that can be opened into an additional bed if the need arises.

24

In order to ensure the main living area is also well lit naturally during the day, the apartment also enjoys a large window at the front. Together with the colours used, this imparts a strong sensation of warmth and increased internal space.

25

The kitchen is located opposite the main entrance with access to an overhanging balcony with a low glass wall to allow an unspoilt view. It is furnished complete with a full height built-in fridge-freezer, oven, electrical hob and a washing machine whilst providing ample storage space both above and below the worktops that are finished off in highly durable resin.

THE INTERIOR FINISHING

For the interior design of the dwelling, the lower floors for the kitchen and living area are finished off in concrete. Concrete flooring is not only easy to maintain and clean but it also blends in with the timber furniture, left in its natural form for added beauty.

Also, all apertures are in aluminium for durability and low maintenance with double glazed glass panels for maximum thermal insulation and noise reduction.

This was specifically intended to impart a contemporary yet industrial feel which is also traditional to many houses abroad.

Every piece of furniture is designed without any handles to make everyting blend in seamissly giving off a softer finish.

29

In contrast with the interior of the whole apartment, the bathroom was finished off in a darker shade. Although this might make the room look smaller, the main reason for going with this option was specifically to make the room more cosy and provide a better environment in which to relax.

Natural light can still be enjoyed through a window above the bath.

31

32

Last but not least, when designing the apartment, great importance was given to privacy apart from just maximization of storage space. Whilst the sleeping quarter was segregated on a different level, all amenities were carefully integrated in the dead spaces of other areas in such a way that would allow the living area to be as large as possible.

The design also incorporates a secluded double bed on an upper deck reached via a well concealed stir case. Below the sleeping quarter is the bathroom.

THE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE // STORAGE

1.

Apart from containing ample storage, this wardrobe also has an in-built full sized mirror and an iron-board that pulls up when in use and retracts back in place.

2. At the edge of the peninsula are two medium-sized compartments which can be used as storage.

3.

The three seater sofa. When in need, this sofa also includes a pull out extension which doubles up as an extra bed.

4.

The underhanging cabinet beneath the TV is divided into several partitions of shelving to cater for storage of different sized objects.

*This cabinet conceals all the pre-installed network and wiring needed for the services of the TV and Wi-Fi for a clean and minimalistic finish.

5.

The large unit which overhangs the TV can store a number of books or decorations according to your liking.

6.

The steps leading to the bed in the upper level are all storage compartments, ideal for smaller items.

The kitchen is equipped with drawers and

7.

storage compartments, whilst the fridge is in-built and concealed for a minimalistic finish.

8. An extendable wall-fixed clothe airer can be found in the balcony to provide hanging washing lines necessary for drying clothes.

40

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, I hope that this brochure has given you a more clear preview as to what this student complex and the micro-dwellings will consist of. Basing the whole project on the concept of modular design, the scope was to deliver accommodation housing units finished to the highest possible standards while at the same time keeping in mind budget constraints.

With the main focus of this project being micro-dwellings to increase housing capacity for students, it will only be a matter of time before students form a significant and integral part of the community.

Thank you!
