Hello
Artists!
Hope you have all been doing great and enjoying your life of creativity. If you’re like me, you
wake up in the morning and think…hmmm, what am I going to create today? From commissions in oil portraits to journaling to an abstract acrylic or another touch on your very detailed watercolor or teaching, we all have our passionate void that needs filling just about every day. That’s what Art of the Carolinas is all about. Filling that void up! Try something new. Take a chance, meet new friends. Nurture your passion or discover a new one. It’s about taking a day or a weekend and calling it your own. Design it how you’d like! Grab some friends for your annual art retreat! Or come by yourself and relax. Take a couple of classes, enjoy the trade show. Take a ride in the limo, check out the Raleigh retail store, grab a bite to eat at one of our local restaurants. You get to do what you want! Rub shoulders with lots of fun and creative folks, watch a free demo, stop by and chat with our fabulous vendors, try something new…Whatever you want. That’s what is so fun about this show. Year after year, fun whacky artists, students, instructors and new friends show up and shake their feathers. We will have products and vendors from all over the world at the show: United States, France, Japan, Australia, South Korea, China, Germany and more! Please join us for the fun. Admission to the trade show is free, parking is free, and demonstrations are free. How cool is that? Pre-register for the workshops on our Web site if you’d like, www.JerrysArtEvents.com or www.ArtoftheCarolinas.com or take your chance and wait to sign up at the show. Either way, a good time is guaranteed at Art of the Carolinas 2011! We’ve upped our game and lowered our prices! Check it out. Can’t wait to see you in November!
Sincerely,
Sharon DiGuilio E V E N T C O O R D I N AT O R , ART OF THE CAROLINAS

He will introduce you to his “process” in developing a well composed acrylic painting on canvas. Get into the artist’s head about how the creative process works for you! TH1108 Drawing the Portrait from Life 9am-4pm Medium: Acrylic and Latex $219
Here is your opportunity to learn the primary foundation for all portrait work. Working from a live model, renowned portrait artist Paul McCormack will demonstrate and lecture on the principles and guidelines needed to achieve a likeness. With the inclusion of techniques in pencil and powdered graphite you will learn how to acquire correct proportions and to render features in a realistic fashion. This is a great precursor to Mr. McCormack’s watercolor portrait workshop.*
TH1109 A New Way of Painting Watercolor Instructor: Jeanne Carbonetti Medium: Watercolor Skill level: All Sponsored by: HK Holbein
9am-4pm $234
In seeking to help students remove “painter’s block,” Jeanne discovered a simple, yet powerful, way for all types of painters to stay in their power. Focusing on the principles of hard form, soft form and no form, students will learn, through landscape and still life, how to polish a given theme, how to solve structural issues and, most of all, how to take the “thinking” out of the process.
$219
You are going to love the surface you create for the background of your floral. This lesson will start with a traditional wet into wet under painting that has added collage papers and watercolor pencils; then we will add unique and fun shapes to frame your subject into the background. This mixed media approach creates a magical surface that has a tactile quality in your finished painting.*
TH1111 Not Your Mama’s Composition Class Instructor: Paul McCormack Medium: Pencil Skill level: Intermediate Sponsored by: Winsor & Newton
9am-4pm
9am-4pm $219
Skill level: All Sponsored by: Winsor & Newton Is your work getting lost in a sea of similar paintings? Do you wish you could break out of your rut and make a change? Come to our creative adventure! No drawing skills are needed - we're more concerned with creating an exciting composition than getting a likeness of an object. Seem strange? Come play with us and find out. Don't be afraid. It's time to take a step toward your own creativity. We'll do several compositions during the first half of class, then paint one of them the second half. You won't be left stranded! Kathie has a plan for you every step of the way.*

Portraits! What a great way to make a living! What other job exists where you can gently mix creativity, emotion, color and hard work and pour it all into a comfortable living? Or take the same ingredients, shake them up a bit and pour them into an experience? What other job affords such a diverse array of experiences in the form of people, places, movement, sounds and above all, a visual cornucopia of treasures? Sure, awards and recognition are pretty exciting at first, but after awhile, well, it's the clients who matter most! Maybe you've seen my artwork in “Veranda”, “Carolina Country” or “Our State?” Or maybe you've seen my illustrations in Breakthrough Publications, McGraw Hill or Houghton-Mifflin publications? I have over a thousand portraits displayed in homes and businesses around the globe. Now that's exciting! It is hard to put a price on the gratification and emotional value of portraits and artwork that delight my clients! My university art experience did not exactly match my artistic hopes. The reality of the education was actually a disappointment. But what I did discover was that life experiences strengthen the artistic mind and open the doors to the colors and dynamics all around us! I like to think that pieces of an artist's life experiences lodge somewhere on shelves in the mind just waiting to be pulled out and dusted off when the visual need arises! And so when I create a painting for a client, a little piece of me goes onto the canvas. We're here to help you! Just ask us!

Diana Coidan began painting at an early age; in fact, she can't remember when she wasn't at an easel. A Native of Pittsburgh, PA and a Business College graduate from that city, she has resided in Raleigh, since 1982, retiring from administrative work to pursue her love for art full time. She has been a multi-media painter for most of her life, but after being introduced to pastels eight years ago, she fell in love with this medium and feels this is the most expressive to work in. Diana has an unconscious attraction to blue which is evident in her strikingly realistic pastels capturing the spectacular skyscapes and nautical scenes which she is noted for. She has traveled extensively outside the United States with opportunities to photograph many cloud formations and ports along the way for her subject matter. A member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina, Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Fine Arts League of Cary, Sertoma Park Artists Association, Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition, Visual Art Exchange, and the Cary Gallery of Artists, Diana's work can be found at Nicole's Studio and Gallery, Raleigh, Mattie King Davis Gallery, Beaufort, Arts 'n Things, Morehead City, and Cary Gallery of Artists, Cary.

Judy is an avid oil painter, plein air painter, and workshop instructor. She has been a full time professional artist for over 20 years. She has studied with many wonderful painters like Kevin McPherson, Camille Przewodek, and Susan Sarback, and several of the Plein Air Painters of America. All of these artist instructors have influenced her work and helped to shape her into the artist and teacher she is today. In her teaching she tries to impart to her students what she has learned from the many instructors that she has studied with over many years. Judy is generous with her knowledge and strives to help each student individually as much as possible. She teaches a plein air style that is quick and yet deliberate. The focus is on shape, value, color and design. Her workshops “loosen up” the “tight” painter, placing emphasis on what is really important in a painting rather than the details. She has a teaching DVD, “Reflections of Nature,” that is available. She has traveled and painted in “plein air” on location in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and many areas of the US. She paints in a manner that lets the viewer see the subject as the eye sees a scene, not in photographic focus, but with atmosphere and depth of field. She captures the sophisticated; lush colors of nature and of our man made environment, and presents them in a believable and exciting way. For the observer her work conveys a feeling of “being there.” Her works are included in many corporate collections, including SAS Institute, Glaxo Smith Klein, Duke University Medical Center, and Progress Energy. Her paintings are also featured in numerous hospitals, hotels and banks as well as many private collections.
Jeanne Carbonetti has been an artist and teacher for more than 30 years. Specializing in developing the power of the creative process, she is the author of The Tao of Watercolor, The Zen of Creative Painting, The Yoga of Drawing, Making Pearls: Living the Judy’s Workshops: TH1103, TH1115, SU1114 Creative Life, The Heart of Creativity: Imagination, Inspiration and Destiny and the DVDs, The Tao of Watercolor and The Zen of Creative Painting. She has most recently been interviewed for Gail McMeekin’s new book, The Twelve Secrets of Highly Successful Women. By invitation, she exhibited at the Fifth International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Florence, Italy, in December 2005. The tall guy with the easel, that's Steve! He has a great following among his collectors for his plein air oils. His unique red canvas backgrounds enhance his landscape techniques and delight his collectors! His style is his own and people love to watch him at work at the shows, in a field, on the beach or at any location where the viewer can pause and see his surroundings through Steve's eyes. His loose, painterly style is a long ways from the preciseness of gilding and gold leaf application and restoration that has been his craft for many years. He studied under some of Philadelphia's finest and his talents in that area are a dying art! His gold leaf work is in demand up and down the East Coast. "GoldLeafMan" But it is the jewel like colors of the oil paints that are his love. He provides the same touch with beautiful transluscent watercolors and his clients love their portraits in that medium! Brenda Mattson www.brendamattson.com From the moment Brenda's Grandfather gave her a set of oil paints, at the age of eight, she has dreamed of becoming a great artist. She was able to keep the dream, even through the detours life can throw at you. The need to learn and improve was, and still is, strong enough to keep that desire burning. Brenda is noted for her extraordinary ability to excel at portraits, landscapes, florals and animals with a realism that many can only dream of. Brenda works in a variety of mediums from pencil, soft pastels, oil, encaustic and clay to name a few. She has embraced photography, which is especially useful in her travels. Brenda is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, exhibition chairperson for the International Association of Pastel Societies, a member of the Portrait Society of America, historian for the Great Lakes Pastel Society, member of the Southwest Florida Society, the Salmagundi Club of NYC and the Art Alliance. Brenda has been published in many books and art magazines, her work is displayed in several art galleries and her name is used to promote some of her favorite art supplies.

Allen Montague Allen Montague is a native North Carolinian who began his creative career at age 13, when he received his first patent. From a young teenager through his early twenties, Allen’s passion was music. His college years consisted of majoring in business and marketing. He continued his love for design by starting his own clothing accessory line. This interest in color and design was an easy segue into paints and canvas. He began his art career and has never looked back. Two years after becoming a self-taught fine art painter, the International Art Auction House of Sotheby’s in New York was cataloguing his work. Soon after, Allen began to produce not only fine art originals, but published hundreds of limited and open edition prints. To meet the demand for his work, he opened several art galleries. For the next seventeen plus years Allen painted, published and continued to design and invent. He was also asked to host and produce a television show featuring art. Over the years, Allen has shared his talents and love of people and art.

Carol Ann Sherman After receiving my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Miami I allowed all my artistic ability and knowledge to lie dormant for over 20 years. When I looked around and found what was lacking in my life, I realized it was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to be a painter. That old saying “Love is lovelier the second time around” proved to hold true with my art. I finally found a way to fill that vacant spot in my life. I have since decided to make my art my partner, my companion and my love for life. I am currently employing watercolors, acrylics, batik and just a pinch of collage in my work. I do find the figure and its situation to be the most intriguing subject matter. I find the speechless animal emotion to talk louder than words at times. Even still life can scream out loud if we allow it to. I feel it necessary to give voice to what I consider to be underlying emotion in our world. I like my paintings to portray a well written novel composed of strong composition, vivid lively color, lines of personality and an outstanding memorable emotional quality. The best reaction I can get from a viewer is a point and a giggle!
I love to paint. I have painted all my life. But now I want to paint every single day. My style is very eclectic, never really following a set pattern. I like to go outside without a preconceived method or formula. I approach each painting differently and like to experiment, to shake things up a little. I'm a full-time plein air painter, deliberately choosing the outdoors to a comfortable studio. Bugs, pesky by-standers and bad weather are just a few of the inconveniences I endure to capture the colors and nuances of nature. My subject matter varies, but I love painting outside year round, near the coast from Cape Cod in the late summer, to Key West in the winter, and all points in between. They say paint what you love most. That's the coast, with its boats, marshes and architecture, etc., so I try to be there painting most of the time. I also love Charleston, SC and paint there often too. Sometimes a Carol’s Workshops: SA1116, SA1126, SU1105, SU1116 scene stops me in my tracks and I just have to paint it. This definitely requires a flexible schedule because spontaneity is crucial to a plein air artist. I want to have the ability to determine my own James Sulkowski course in life and to paint the world, as I see it, everyday.

Fred Swarr Fred Swarr, a resident of Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, has been an active painter since 1969. He has produced artwork of many different types primarily in acrylic paint on a variety of surfaces with a masterful use of colors, rich textures and unique subject matter. His "painting to music" is done quickly in front of an audience to live music. His studio paintings are done to music with more time-consuming detail. During that time, he captures the music and the movement through an artistic interpretation.

Michele Theberge www.micheletheberge.com With my art, I aspire to offer a sense of spaciousness, an opening, an invitation to contemplate the nature of life and explore what underlies the material world. My paintings and drawings feature figures, parts of figures, everyday objects, mysterious blobs, repetitive shapes and patterns. The images may be inspired by music, nature, the body, meditation. I use these images to construct installations, spawn interactive projects, build groupings, or display individually. As I draw or paint, my mind drifts into another place. Images spring up, surprising me with their strangeness, humor, and curious, quiet power. Gleaned from perception of the quotidian – objects, animals, interactions, food, clothing, and emotions – the images defy logical interpretation. Another practice in my studio is to paint marks and shapes in careful, focused repetition. This calms my mind and slows my thoughts. Changing in size and scale and richly hued, the images hint at rhythms in nature. When two or more of these pieces are grouped together, they may imply a narrative. A field of blue marks hints at another world or dimension, shiny red blobs are an object of intrigue for a bent-over woman, dark sandpaper with a hole invites a mysterious figure forward, small triangles may be trees…or are they a stairway to another dimension?
