“The art of Maxwell Doig is immediately recognisable as his, not only because of his very individual deployment of various painterly techniques, but also, primarily indeed, because of his distinctive vision. Such skill in purely representational painting is rare indeed these days, but one does not win the Villiers David Prize, as Doig did in 1997, for skill alone. What makes Doig stand out, then and now, is his visions of life itself. As he puts it, “In an age when everything is moving so fast, I’m interested in portraying stillness and quiet.” And who, in the light of Vermeer and Hammersmith, can argue with that?” — John Russell Taylor, 2006, Art Critic and Writer
An exhibition of the work entered into the competition by Channel Island artists, as selected by this year’s Fox judge Maxwell Doig.

Preview: Monday 21 October 5.30pm - 7pm To be opened by Linda Rose Parkes “As the title suggests, every painting in this exhibition has been inspired and is based on my emotional response to folk music. Not just English folk music but traditional music from many corners of the globe. Alan Lomax wrote in 1958, “The first function of folk music is to produce a feeling of security for the listener, by voicing the particular quality of a land and the life of its people. Folksong calls the native back to his roots.” This exhibition of paintings is about me, about you and where we all come from.” — David Henley

The project was conceived in 1997 and continues to this day. It is a collaborative project between myself and the subject, who are responsible for the handwritten text that appears on the prints. The subjects range from local issues to International events. Interestingly, over time, some campaigns have managed to affect change in government policy, others not.

Edward Blampied: Jersey
Monday 18 November Saturday 7 December
Monday 9 December 2013 Saturday 4 January 2014
Archisle: Jersey Contemporary Photography’s second biennial Open Exhibition presents work by Channel Islands and international photographers. In a contemporary context, physical borders and geographies dissolve into new artistic spaces and constituencies. Originating this visual discourse in Jersey, a small island culture with distinctive senses of place and identity, the exhibition engages with the global mediascape and sets up creative tensions as a method for interrogating contemporary experiences, micro and macro. Sponsored by
Edward Blampied’s new exhibition, Jersey, is a collection of brand new paintings capturing the Island’s scenery and landmarks in the style of large seaside postcards. The exhibition will be colourful, funny and a little bit saucy. Be prepared for a trip down memory lane, too, as some of the paintings will depict places on the Island that are gone, but not forgotten.

5 Broken Cameras
Wadjda
Wednesday 6 November
Thursday 7 November
An extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit. “I feel like the camera protects me,” Burnat says, “but it’s an illusion.”
The first Saudi feature directed by a woman, and the first made entirely in Saudi Arabia, Wadjda tells the story of a rebellious eleven-year-old girl who enters a local Qur’an reading competition, planning to use the prize money to buy a bike — even though (or perhaps because) she’s been told that girls don’t ride bikes.

Mercury
Monday 16 December
Wednesday 18 December
Director Mike Leigh shows no signs of slowing down in this, arguably one of his best films. A drama about two married couples, the film stays buoyant not only because of Leigh’s ear for authentic, cathartic dialogue but also as a result of the stunning performances across the board. President’s Choice: to be introduced by Geoffrey Coppock.
Manchester-based quartet Mercury return to Jersey after their acclaimed shows at the 2013 Jersey Jazz Festival. This is the final date of their UK tour, showcasing their self-titled first album. With a sound drawing influence from a huge variety of places outside of the Jazz tradition, they bring new textures and compositional flavours into their improvised music without losing sight of the Jazz voices of Britain and Scandinavia.

Popping is a street dance and one of the original funk styles that came from California, during the 1960s-1970s. It is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body, referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with various movements and poses.
