Admissions
Admission Guidelines 2014
The Examination
The following arrangements apply for the September 2015 intake.
The examination will consist of an NFER English Test, NFER Mathematics Test and NFER Verbal Reasoning Test and will take 3 hours. The answer sheets will be sent to England for marking. Results will be notified by letter by Tuesday, 16 December 2014. We are sorry but we are not able to issue results over the telephone.
The Timetable Jersey College for Girls warmly invites all prospective students and their parents to our Open Evening on Thursday, 2 October 2014 at 6.30 pm when there will be an opportunity to learn more about Jersey College for Girls and what we have to offer your daughter.
Students cannot revise for the examination since there is not a body of factual knowledge which needs to be learned. Students may find it helpful to have experience of what sample papers look like and of the style of questions asked. NFER English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning Papers (multiple choice) sample booklets are available in the education section of booksellers e.g. W H Smith and will also be sold at our Open Evening. Examples of questions are available from JCG. The actual examination that we use is a closed access test and cannot be purchased on the open market.
There will be an opportunity for prospective pupils to spend half a day with us, experiencing life at the College by joining our existing students for lessons. Between October and November the College will ask the primary schools of those registered for our Entrance Examination for a school report. This is designed to give us a fuller picture of the candidates who apply to us, including information about their attitude to learning and their interests, as well as giving details of their academic progress to date.
Appeals
The Jersey College for Girls Entrance Examination will be held on Saturday, 8 November 2014. If you wish your daughter to sit this examination, you will need to register her to do so before Friday, 24 October 2014. Application forms can be downloaded from our website: www.jcg.je or obtained from Mrs Lisa Biddlecombe l.biddlecombe@jcg.sch.je, Jersey College for Girls, Mont Millais, St Saviour, Jersey, JE2 7YB.
There is an appeals process. The only grounds for appeal will be the College’s failure to follow the procedure outlined in the admissions policy and to apply the admissions criteria.

Fees

College fees for the academic year 2014 – 2015 are £1,500 and are subject to an annual review in the Spring term effective for the Autumn term. College fees must be paid in full by the first day of each term. Methods of settlement are:
Termly: payment will be taken in full on the first day of term, less any deposit paid. School fees are payable on receipt of an invoice raised from the Treasurer of the States. In the event of a query please contact the Principals’ PA at College.

Please complete the application form which is included in this booklet. 4. Your daughter will be invited to sit the entrance examination. 5. You will be informed whether or not your daughter has been successful in her entrance exam. 6. An induction pack, giving details on such things as uniform, payment of fees and other details will be sent to you prior to her joining us.
Or Monthly: payment will be taken in four equal instalments beginning on 1 June for the Autumn Term, 1 October for the Spring Term and 1 February for the Summer Term. Any deposit already paid will be used to reduce your first term’s instalments. If you wish to pay by direct debit please request a form from the Principals’ PA at College. You will be sent an invoice in advance of any payments being taken from your account, which will detail the amount and date of payments to be taken. You will be advised of any changes at least two weeks prior to the change being made.

Bursaries
How to Apply for a Bursary
A wide range of bursaries are available to assist parents whose income is at a level where they might struggle to pay the fees without assistance. If you wish to apply for a bursary please contact the Admissions Secretary at the College for an application form. Forms need to be verified by the Income Tax Department and returned to the College by Monday, 16 February 2015.
Parents seeking a bursary should complete a form, ask for it to be certified by the Income Tax Office and then return it to the College. All income must be shown on the form, whether it is taxed in Jersey or not. Please note the Income Tax Department will not be able to certify your form unless they have received your completed tax return. Parents applying for short term help should write a letter to the Principal to accompany their form explaining the cause of the alteration in their level of income and submit supporting documentation where it is available.
Eligibility As a rough rule of thumb, those with a total household income above ÂŁ48,000 per annum would not be considered eligible for a short term or a long term bursary.
When Should I Apply? Parents who are proprietors, partners, directors or substantial shareholders in any business undertaking, or trust, or who exercise control over that undertaking should submit a complete copy of the previous year’s certified accounts together with the certified form. As is the case with student awards, any benefit accruing from a business or a trust will be judged as income, whether that benefit is remitted to the person concerned or not. Where a student’s parents are divorced, parents should also provide a copy of any court orders relating to maintenance, care and control. Parents who have more than one daughter at JCG should complete one form only.
Parents may apply for short term help at any point during the year. Normally, applications for long term bursaries will be considered in February for an award the following September so parents seeking assistance for Year 10 should apply in Year 9. Please note that it may take several weeks for your application to be processed. Completed, certified forms will need to be returned to the College by the third week of February.
Terms and Conditions All bursaries are subject to annual review. The size of the award is related to the level of parental income and so may vary from year to year (or cease altogether if there has been a significant increase). Bursaries are awarded subject to satisfactory attendance, behaviour and academic performance. Awards may be withdrawn from students who fail to meet these conditions. Awards are decided by the Principal acting on the advice of the Finance Sub-Committee of the Governing Body.

Physical Education: Extra curricular clubs, activities and fixtures
Netball - Autumn Term
Climbing
Years 7, 8 and 9, A and B Netball clubs and teams. Year 10 and Year 11 Netball clubs and teams. All the teams play in the inter-school leagues and tournaments. JCG also has annual fixtures against Guernsey Grammar and Guernsey Ladies’ College for Year 9 Netball and 1st VII Netball. We also look to play in a regional competitions.
This club is open to all year groups and takes place on our extensive indoor climbing wall. Students have the opportunity to participate in the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme.
C.V. Club This club is for Years 10 - 13. Students are given the opportunity to learn how to use gym equipment such as running machines, rowing machines and a variety of weights machines.
Hockey - Autumn Term There is Hockey club available for all years and league games for Years 7, 8, 9 and a combined Year 10 and Year 11 team. All league games are 7 a-side. JCG also has annual fixtures against Guernsey Grammar and Guernsey Ladies’ College for 1st XI Hockey, and other visiting schools.
Squash A new club to JCG, which is open to Years 8-10. With the use of the Victoria College squash courts we introduce and develop squash skills and game play, with support from the Squash Development Officer.
Badminton
Gymnastics
There is an open club for players of all abilities. JCG enters teams into the Secondary Schools’ Saturday morning badminton league, where there are four divisions. This league commences after Christmas.
An open club for all abilities and experience. The club provides an opportunity for students to develop their creative talents through the combined use of Dance and Gymnastic styles.
Swimming
Sailing
There is an open club for all standards and abilities. Students can enjoy recreational fun swimming and receive extra coaching to improve their technique. JCG has annual fixtures against Guernsey Grammar and Guernsey Ladies’ College.
There are opportunities for students to participate in recreational and competitive sailing. JCG has its own sailing team.

House System
Rounders - Summer Term
The Jersey College for Girls House system is an integral part of College life and helps support the ethos created at the College. The College is split into six Houses, Austen-Bartlett, Cavell, Curie-Fry, Garret-Anderson, Inglis and Nightingale. Students are in tutor groups that correspond to their House, and their tutor will also be part of the House staff. House offers a unique experience and provides a supportive and welcoming environment for all the students. It also encourages ownership by the students of a significant part of College life.
Year 7 and Year 8 clubs and teams. Combined Year 9 and 10 club and team. The teams play in the inter-school league and tournaments.
Cricket - Summer Term Open club for all students of all abilities.
Tennis - Summer Term House meetings take place every week and although all staff are part of a House, the meetings are led primarily by the House Captains of which there are two per House from Year 13. House meetings are used to organise teams for events, learn about issues related to their chosen charities, play games and get to know people from other years, but most importantly to plan for and carry out fundraising and community service events. Fundraising and healthy competition take up the main part of House activities. The students acquire many skills during their time at JCG, both in terms of management and leadership. They also develop social skills and an emotional attachment to various charities. Normally each tutor group run their own community service and fundraising events, although most Houses also run whole House events.

Athletics - Summer Term JCG enters students into Individual Championships and the Girls’ Schools Cup competition. Please ask for a copy of our termly Extra-curricular Activity Booklet.
The competitive side of House keeps the House system alive. Sporting, musical, performing arts and artistic events are among the wide range of ways points can be scored for each House. The winners at the end of each House year (Easter – Easter) are presented with the prestigious ‘Cock House Trophy’, which is part of the history of the College.

Music and Drama Extra Curricular Activities
Music Theatre
Technical Theatre
Musicals are staged at the college every other year. The last production of the JCG Youth Music Theatre was Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2013. Prior to this we performed Sweet Charity and Les Misérables. Other past musical productions have included Guys and Dolls, Oliver, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Wind in the Willows. All music for these productions is live and a full student orchestra accompanies the actors. The orchestra for such performances is generally invited to play by Music staff and invitation is based on experience and skill. The next musical at JCG will take place in 2015.
The JCG Tech Club is an extra-curricular activity that runs during the production period. Students from Years 9 to 13 are given the opportunity to build and design sets, hang and operate lighting, operate sound equipment, stage manage productions and run scene change teams during performance. Expert staff supervise all work but hand over to the tech crew during performances so that students run the shows and gain some ownership of them as a result. The club engenders a huge amount of team work and students who are involved gain many skills, particularly initiative. A weekly Tech Club is held outside of the production period for girls who are keen to assist with assemblies, concerts and other events at school.
Theatre
Drama Club
Plays are staged at JCG every other year. Two years ago we performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival 2012. Past productions from JCG Youth Theatre have included Grimm Tales by Carol Ann Duffy and Tim Supple, The Good Person of Szechwan, Macbeth (entered for the Shakespeare Schools Festival 2007), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Yerma, The Crucible and Phaedre and these alternate annually with music theatre opportunities. Students of varying abilities and disciplines (acting, dance and music) are therefore given a range of chances to perform. Rehearsals are extensive and include some weekends as well as after school practice time. The productions at JCG are highly professional and extremely popular.
Year 7, 8 and 9 Drama Club runs weekly when productions are not in the making. The club will begin again after Christmas. The emphasis of this activity is fun and students are encouraged to join if they want to perform work in addition to the Drama curriculum. The aim is to encourage students to mix with girls in different year groups and share their skills and love of all things dramatic.
Music Activities The Music Department’s ethos is to be as inclusive as possible; we try to have an activity on offer for every student at some point during the academic year. During the Autumn Term our main focus will be our choirs and possible participation in the Eisteddfod by at least one of our instrumental ensembles in November. The rehearsals for these ensembles will

take place by arrangement during lunchtimes and after school. Our choirs will prepare for our Christmas Carol Service at St Thomas’ Church (Monday 15 December) and the Chamber Choir will also prepare to perform at Remembrance Service in November. Our students will also rehearse musical items to offer in whole school assemblies.

Chamber Groups At various times throughout the year, and often in response to performance opportunities (services, assemblies, concerts, presentation evenings, Prize Giving), a number of Chamber groups may operate and are sometimes student led. These include: String Quartet, Wind Quintet, Saxophone Quartet, Flute Choir and Clarinet Choir.

We offer support with GCSE Composing to all of our students before school and at lunchtime, by arrangement.
Our instrumental ensembles include Strictly Strings and Camerata, both of which are initiatives sponsored by JCG’s Extended Music programme for Strings and directed by our musician in residence, internationally renowned cellist and director of the Kings Chamber Orchestra of London, Gerard Le Feuvre, whose unique gift is making everything accessible and fun.
House Music Music Staff offer support, guidance and encouragement to House Captains in preparation for the annual House Music Competition. Classes include Senior and Junior Instrumental and Vocal Solo, Original Composition, House Ensemble and whole House Choir.
Senior Concert Band: Our Senior Wind Band for players of approximately Grade 5 and above.
Polyphony Our in-house provision of instrumental, vocal and theory lessons continues to grow. We now have 16 tutors on the team and approximately 170 girls learning piano, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, flute, violin, cello, drum kit, orchestral percussion or taking vocal and theory lessons. Tracking and reporting
Students should have two or three individual meetings with their tutor per academic year to discuss their learning and set targets. They should also discuss progress and set targets with their subject teachers regularly, at strategic moments during the academic year. Students should keep a record of any targets that arise from the meeting. Academic mentoring sessions with tutors will mostly take place around the time that periodics and reports are issued. Each tutor will dedicate time to see tutees, discuss progress and agree targets. These targets should be recorded (in planners for KS3 and 4 students) and we would encourage parents to look at them and discuss strategies to achieve them with their daughters.

Target levels or grades are set for each student in the first term of the academic year. This will be communicated to parents in the first periodic report. Progress is tracked on two further occasions in Years 7 - 10 and on one occasion in Years 11 - 13, through the use of a periodic and a full report. There is also an opportunity to meet with subject teachers at a Parents’ Evening. Periodics provide a target level/grade, current level/grade and indicate the level or grade a student is likely to achieve. Students are also given a Learner Profile score (teachers select the number corresponding to one or more statements which best fits the learning attributes of a student in each subject). Reports contain this information together with comments from subject teachers.

Gifted and Talented Provision
The term Individual Student Needs refers to the fact that every student will learn at different rates and in different ways as no two students are the same; they all have differing needs that have to be addressed to ensure they achieve academic success. There is no one definition as all students are individuals.
High potential learners are those who by virtue of their outstanding abilities are capable of high performance. They are students for whom a traditional educational programme is not always sufficient and they may require a different and individualised approach for meeting their needs.
We understand that students learn best when their emotional needs are recognised and, as far as possible, met. Our pastoral team, working in partnership with students and their parents, seeks to build on the support and guidance provided by family and friends.
Jersey College for Girls aims to provide a demanding and liberal curriculum delivered by experienced staff who have high expectations and model excellence. Very able students, as well as others, are equally entitled to have their needs recognised, supported and challenged. We aim to reduce under achievement and nurture and develop talent. The College aims to provide equality of opportunity for all students to be inspired, motivated and enthused by an innovative curriculum that offers both enhancement and enrichment. Students are encouraged to be both positive and proud of their abilities and to feel valued and supported by all staff. They are encouraged to share their talents and successes with their peers through their tutor group, House, assemblies and more. The tutor group is the basic unit of our pastoral system. Each tutor group has a form tutor who acts as an academic mentor to the students in his/her care, helping them to evaluate their progress and set themselves targets for the future. The form tutor is the primary contact between home and College and is the first port of call for parents with general queries or concerns. Form tutors are supported by their Heads of Key Stage and Assistant Headteacher for Student Progress.
Counselling
High potential learners will be highlighted in a variety of ways. This includes using data from CATs completed in Year 7 and Year 9; however, this is only a small indication of their abilities. The Head of Key Stage 3 and the Educational Needs Coordinator gather data on students’ skills and abilities from their primary school. High potential learners from primary schools can be identified on transfer in relation to specific subject areas. During a student’s time at JCG, individual students will be identified as having high

Staff will identify a student who they believe fits the profile of a high potential learner, based on National Curriculum levels, assessment criteria and individual knowledge of the student’s abilities. Formative and/or summative assessment evidence may be required for this. Within the classroom, subject staff offer differentiated work and highlight extra-curricular opportunities to students. They reinforce and build upon students higher order thinking skills.
Inquiring Minds is a lecture series run by Jersey College for Girls. These lectures are provided by eminent academics who are distinguished researchers within their individual fields in the UK and internationally. The aim of the lecture series is to allow our students the opportunity to go beyond the confines of their examination syllabus and to build upon the love of learning that already exists within Jersey College for Girls. Year 9 Gifted and Talented students are offered the opportunity to follow the Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) throughout Year 10, culminating in a further half GCSE qualification.
We are delighted that so many of our girls: Excel in their musical talents and are rewarded with success in their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations and take part in local workshops and concerts. Pursue their talents for drama by taking part in local plays as well as in College productions. Are rewarded for their sporting talents by being selected for local, national and international teams. Demonstrate their gifted ability in Mathematics by performing so well in both the national Team and Individual Maths Challenges, to name just a few achievements.
Special Educational Needs The term Special Educational Needs has a legal definition, referring to students who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn or access education than most children of the same age. Jersey College for Girls seeks to ensure that it follows the Jersey Code of Practice (2005) on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs, including the Disability and Children’s Acts. A whole College ethos exists, that accepts that everyone has the duty to provide for all students no matter what their talents, skills or needs.
The Educational Needs Coordinator, in conjunction with departments, plans an enrichment programme for high potential learners within the College. This will include sessions held within College led by College staff or external speakers, as well as educational visits and individualised classroom based programmes. The aim of the programme will be to offer additional and different experiences in order to broaden the perspectives of the high potential learners.
We believe that it is essential that students who are having difficulties with their learning are supported as soon as possible. We therefore encourage parents to raise any concerns they have with either the form tutor, Head of Year or ENCO at the earliest opportunity.

Academic Mentoring
Special Educational Needs (continued)... Students with special educational needs are mainly identified prior to admission during visits to primary schools or via the Education Welfare Service. Further assessments may take place on entry to the College and during their time at Jersey College for Girls. For the most part, students with special educational needs will be taught in the classroom alongside their peers. Teaching techniques and strategies within each class, including differentiated resources and learning tasks, will accommodate those of differing abilities, including those with special needs, wherever appropriate and necessary. This will enable individual student needs to be met and all students to maximise their potential in all areas of the curriculum.
At Jersey College for Girls, we believe that each student should receive individual help, support and guidance in order to fulfil the College’s aim to create an environment which enables everyone to perform at their best. Academic mentoring is an integral part of the tutorial system and academic mentoring sessions are an opportunity for a conversation between a mentor and student related to learning. Academic mentoring enhances the ethos of tracking student progress to ensure that each student knows where they are with their learning, where they have made progress, what they need to do to improve and what targets they need to set in order to further their progress.
The Educational Needs Co-ordinator liaises with students, parents, Heads of Key Stage, form tutors and subject teachers to ensure that Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) are produced, where appropriate, in order to support students with special educational needs and to monitor the implementation and review of these plans and support student learning. Students with Individual Learning Plans are placed on the College’s Inclusion register. Students with varying special needs may be provided with individual or group tuition by the Educational Needs Coordinator, a voluntary teaching assistant, another member of staff, or an academic prefect, and provision maps are put in place to monitor these sessions. Sixth form students also assist students within the classroom and on a 1:1 basis. Voluntary teaching assistants will also work with small groups of students within classrooms on a weekly basis. Students may be offered a personalised curriculum to suit their needs mainly at Key Stage 4 and beyond.

The library is well-equipped with both study and reading resources. It is a place that promotes a positive reading culture, stocking daily newspapers, magazines and an ever-growing range of fiction. It is also an information centre which students can use to develop their subject knowledge and research skills, enabling them to access to a vast range of non-fiction and reference books. In addition to this, we house an Employability Library, where students can browse the most up to date careers information booklets and University Prospectuses.

The curriculum has been organised to improve accessibility. The GCSE course begins in Year 9 for Mathematics, Science and English. All students in Years 11 through to 13 have curriculum time for Enrichment. The following accreditations are available depending on the courses and extra-curricular activities followed by students:
Key Stage 4 Students continue to study the Core subjects of English (Language and Literature), Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, French, PE, PSHE. The current Enrichment Programme has been running for many years and has proved to be very successful with our students.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award This requires a full year commitment as it covers all sections. Students work to Bronze or Silver level and plan and participate in expeditions, including a trip away to the New Forest. Other elements of the award are volunteering, physical activity and a skill. Students are expected to complete these sections independently.
In Year 11 they embark on a three year enrichment programme, which takes place on Fridays between 1.30pm – 3.30pm, depending on the timings of their chosen activity. We aim to offer students the opportunity to try something different, see our island from different perspectives, develop self reliance and confidence, give something back to the local community and develop ideas for lifelong learning. Students are expected to participate in a range of activities from the following three categories:-
Expedition planning for Dominica Students going on the trip to Dominica participate in fund raising and carry out research in readiness for their trip. Pomme d’Or (Run your own hotel) A chance to have hands on experience of running a hotel. Students work in food and beverage operations, kitchen and food production, sales and marketing, housekeeping, human resources, meetings and leisure and operations at the Pomme d’Or Hotel.
Physical Self - in this section there are choices from more traditional sports to other sports that may be new to students. Caring Self - this is a chance to participate in community and service activities, it could be helping others or doing some environmental work.
Work Experience Students are encouraged to find their own placements and have this approved by the school. They are expected to choose carefully and be totally committed.
Future Self - in this section, students will hopefully develop a new and interesting skill which they can take into the future.
Living away from home Students acquire cookery skills and gain confidence in food preparation, focusing on preparing tasty and healthy dishes using fresh ingredients when you are on a tight budget.
Students choose 2 activities each year and, over the three years, they should participate in 2 activities from each section.
Exploring Jersey An opportunity to find out more about the culture and heritage of our island and go out and about to discover more about our beautiful surroundings.

Year 11, 12 & 13 Enrichment Programme Friday afternoons
Sport and fitness This is available to Year 12 & 13 students to give them a chance to maintain their fitness, pursuing activities which suit them. Students have the opportunity to use our excellent facilities under the supervision of PE staff.
Art on location A chance to develop artistic skills for students who enjoy art but did not pursue the subject to A level. Sometimes the sessions are run in school and sometimes on location. Model United Nations An opportunity to explore contemporary issues on international relations, including war, development, the economy and human rights abuse with a realistic approach. Students will develop skills in diplomacy, debating and widen their knowledge of global current affairs. They may even attend the Model United Nations General Assembly in London.
Street Smart In this activity there is a focus on individual confidence, combining martial arts with fitness. It is facilitated by two coaches who come in to share their expertise. 5-a-side football Students go to Fort Regent to use the courts there, improve their skills and enjoy the game.
Fencing This may be a unique opportunity to take part in this fast-paced tactical sport in sessions run by the coach to Jersey’s Commonwealth team. Students will learn how to attack, defend, move, score and referee.
Yachting In this activity, students can work towards the ‘Start Yachting’ qualification or move on to ‘Competent Crew’. They use yachts in St Aubin’s Bay and learn about handling, safety, being part of a crew and rope-work.
Community Service / Work Experience Students choose their own placement and are expected to commit for a full term.
Yoga A yoga instructor leads students in the gentle Hatha style which includes simple poses with gentle stretching. Yoga is said to help enhance academic, sport and artistic performance.
Fairtrade Students work to promote Fairtrade in Jersey and learn about the Fairtrade movement with the help of a local Fairtrade expert.
At the end of each year students will be expected to reflect on what they have done and record some of their experiences, which could then be used in their personal statement and CV.
Primary Schools This is of particular interest to students who may like to work in education in the future. Students are able to help in their local primary school and teachers plan activities which require the additional help of our students.
