Commonwealth team helps Indian charities Members of Jersey’s Commonwealth Games team raised £2,500 for three children’s charities operating in India following their attendance at the 2010 Games in Delhi. The monies were made up of donations from team members, which were then matched by the team’s lead sponsor, Sanne Group.

Through the Sanne Philanthropic Foundation’s relationship with Save the Children, the team visited a Mobile Health Unit project operating in the slums of Delhi during the Games, allowing them to see the positive impact achieved through international charities and NGOs.

Batteries not excluded for Hawksford International

A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months. Jersey Finance is a non-profit organisation formed in 2001 to represent and promote Jersey as an international finance centre of excellence. The Friends of Mont a l’Abbe School charity was awarded £21,571 to fund equipment for its sensory room, which is being constructed as part of the school’s partial rebuild. It will offer the 85 pupils, aged 3 to 18, access to high-tech light- and sound-activated equipment, which is vital for the stimulation of the youngsters, many of whom have severe disabilities.

The ‘Big Volcano Challenge’ The challenge saw Andrew climbing three active Guatemalan volcanoes in the space of three days in order to raise money for the Education for the Children foundation, which builds schools in the most poverty-stricken regions of Guatemala, where around 60% of children do not attend school and only 5% receive secondary school education. Andrew has been keeping a blog about his climbing experiences, which can be found at www.ajadventures.com.

It is hoped that this sensory room will be ready to open in early Spring 2011.

The afternoon was a great success and raised several hundred pounds towards the charity Les Amis, which Close Jersey has committed to supporting for its financial year.

Andrew Jarrett, Sales and Marketing Director of Foreshore, recently completed the ‘Big Volcano Challenge’ in partnership with Investec-sponsored charity, ‘Le Tournoi’.

Pupils at Mont a l’Abbe School will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of a state-of-the-art sensory room thanks to a generous donation from Barclays Wealth via the Barclays Wealth Community Awards.

State Street employees pour efforts into Soup Kitchen

In December a brave team from Close Jersey took on the task of holding their own Bush Tucker Trials. The rest of the ‘camp mates’ rallied around to bid on senior management, including Matthew Beddoe, Managing Director of Close International Asset Management Limited, and Rex Cowley, Head of Marketing. Both lined their stomachs with an assortment of insects, grubs and all manner of nasty things.

Every December for the last three years, staff at Basel Trust have raised money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation to ensure that a seriously or terminally ill child receives a Christmas wish of their choice.

The bathrooms at Jersey Women’s Refuge are getting a new look for 2011. With a £700 donation, deputy manager of the Jersey Women’s Refuge, Sammy Price, has bought new shower doors and a sink for the premises. The donation was the result of cash raised by RBC Wealth Management staff participating in dress down days in 2010 and was further boosted by B&Q’s 15 per cent discount on the goods purchased.

The Hawksford International ‘Batteries not Excluded School Recycling Scheme’, in association with Transport and Technical Services, has now launched. The scheme, which sees 22 battery recycling receptacles located at non fee-paying primary schools, provides youngsters with an opportunity to help with the Island’s recycling efforts. Increasing the number of batteries that are collected for recycling is extremely important, as they contain potentially harmful chemicals and metals which should not be disposed of with normal household rubbish. Batteries also contain chemicals and metals which can be separated for re-use during the recycling process.

State Street staff were part of a team of volunteers that helped Jersey’s annual Soup Kitchen raise its largest amount to date – over £12,000. Islanders descended on the Royal Square to enjoy a cup of one of 37 flavours of soups, donated by various organisations. All proceeds raised went to the Shelter Trust for the Homeless.

Basel Trust helps grant Christmas wish In past years they have covered the cost of a trip to see Father Christmas in Lapland, a hot air balloon ride, a visit to Alton Towers and a trip to see and meet comedian Lee Evans. This year, cake sales, raffles, auctions and pledges to run the New York marathon raised a total of £3,500, granting the wish of a Guernsey-based teenager suffering from leukaemia.

The three charities who received the monies were Save The Children, EveryChild and Esther Benjamins Trust, all of whom tackle critical issues facing children across India.

News in brief...

‘Wild At Art’ auction raises funds for Durrell Law firm Mourant Ozannes was the headline sponsor of a charity art auction held in aid of Durrell in early December, helping to raise over £40,000. ‘Wild at Art’, Durrell’s first ever major art auction, took place at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London and was hosted by best-selling author Lord Jeffrey Archer. Guests were treated to a champagne and canapés reception and had the chance to take home unique artworks. Amongst the lots that went under the hammer were pieces by Matisse and Picasso. Proceeds from the auction and reception will help Durrell to fund the conservation work it began over 50 years ago, helping to save species from extinction.

Appleby lend a hand to Plat Douet School Appleby has stepped in to help with the cost of swimming lessons at Langford swimming pool for Year 3 children at Plat Douet School. Historically, this service has been jointly funded by the school and the PTA, but funding pressures were making it more difficult for them to meet these costs.

International soloist educates local students BNP Paribas sponsored Music in Action’s Viennese New Year Gala on 29th January. The event, which raised money for Durrell’s new conservation centre, featured international soloist Matthew Trusler in an educational programme for Jersey school children, as well as musical development work with students. The evening concert gave the opportunity for 50 players to perform classics by Johann Strauss in the Jersey Opera House.

Appleby has worked with Plat Douet School since 2008, when staff members regularly helped children with their reading as part of a wider schools reading programme.

Equity gives cash boost to charity

For the past few years, Europlan Financial Services Limited has sponsored the Boxing Day cavalcade, organised by the Jersey Old Motor Club. The 2010 cavalcade was the club’s 41st – and on the day over 90 pre-1950 cars joined in the two-hour cavalcade, which started in St. Helier and passed all of the Island’s 12 parish churches before returning back to St Helier. With such a great family atmosphere, support is now stronger than ever. It is a social occasion for Islanders, both young and old, whether taking part or simply enjoying the opportunity to see these elegant cars grace the Island’s roads.
