Dance World Cup to come to Jersey

Despite turbulent times in global financial markets, the finance industry in Jersey is weathering the storm well. The Island continues to be an attractive and stable choice for investors, and at the same time, firms continue to make a very positive contribution to Island life.

Nautilus Trust Company Limited and Bedell Group are proud to be associated with the 6th annual Dance World Cup, which is coming to the Island next month.

Organiser and founder Korinna Soehn commented “I am grateful to the sponsors for their assistance in putting on the event in Jersey. With entries from Australia, Russia, Germany, Italy, Austria, South Africa and Nigeria, as well as the Channel Islands, this is truly an international celebration of dance.”

The first season of a new Under 16 Indoor Cricket League ended in April. Launched by the Jersey Cricket Board in partnership with Appleby, the league provides competition for students in school years 9, 10 and 11.

Helping the senses to grow

Les Quennevais, Le Rocquier, Haute Vallée and Grainville Schools took part, with teams of eight playing under the banner of their cricket club name. Undefeated Grainville School/Springfield C.C. were the eventual winners. It is hoped the league will continue into 2010, with the addition of two more teams.

Voisin and Volaw have reinforced their relationship with Mont à l’Abbé School by helping to create a sensory garden that will be of great benefit to the children. Six volunteers from the law firm and trust company gave up some time in March to plant an area of the playground in time for Spring. The sensory garden follows the refurbishment of the Primary School’s outdoor play area in 2008 and the sponsorship of a special sensory room within the School that the firms funded in 2007. The room has made a real difference in the quality of life for some of the more severely disabled pupils. Likewise, the new garden area will provide a variety of sensory experiences for relaxation, therapy, learning and fun.

Michael O’Connell, Managing Partner of Appleby, commented “We are pleased to continue to partner with Jersey Cricket throughout 2009. The cricket development programme forms part of our ongoing commitment to community-based projects and initiatives in Jersey to provide positive and long-lasting support for schools, sports development and local heritage projects.”

Classic cars and motorbikes on show

On 19th and 20th June, The National Trust for Jersey will team up with Ashburton and Jersey Tourism for two evenings of jazz and classical brass. The Sunset Concerts will be held at the natural amphitheatre of Grantez, overlooking St. Ouen’s Bay, and feature some of the UK’s top brass musicians. Last year, the event attracted over 800 people, who came with their picnics and blankets to enjoy the wonderful music and surroundings. Peter Bourne, Ashburton’s Managing Director, commented “Ashburton is proud to work closely with The National Trust for Jersey as part of our ongoing investment in Jersey’s community and we look forward to what promises to be a highly enjoyable weekend of concerts.”

Derek de la Haye, Assistant Director of Sport and Leisure, comments “Grass roots sport is vitally important. It not only keeps the community healthy and active, but inspires the champions of tomorrow. The Bedell Group Squash Programme for schools is exemplary.”

The 2009 Credit Suisse Jersey International Motoring Festival will take place between 5th and 7th June. This is the largest motoring event in the Channel Islands with a focus on Jersey’s glorious and pioneering days of motorsport and is based on the famous Jersey International Road Races of the 1940s and ‘50s. The event is open to veteran, vintage and classic touring and competition cars and motorcycles. Credit Suisse is providing financial and practical support for the weekend’s activities, which will centre around People’s Park, St Helier. Head of the Jersey Office, Steve Eldred, commented “Last year’s events were a huge success, with locals and visitors enjoying the activities. Credit Suisse has a long affiliation with classic cars so we are delighted to be able to continue our support.”

Helping hands at La Hougue Bie Ogier employees were busy at La Hougue Bie recently helping to rebuild the replica ‘Neolithic hut’ so enjoyed by the Island’s school children and visitors to the Jersey Heritage site. The volunteers also cleared large areas of brambles. Additional on-site projects will take place throughout the year.

Superheroes pedal for Comic Relief

Over 600 dancers from around the world will be participating in the competition at Fort Regent from 25th to 27th June. Disciplines will include Ballet, Tap, Song and Dance, Hip Hop and Modern.

A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

Sunset concerts overlooking St. Ouen’s Bay

To date over 3,500 children at 14 of Jersey’s 24 primary schools have participated in the scheme. Each school has benefited from a free introductory ‘squash festival’ run by the Jersey Squash coaching team, a 1-2 hour official England Squash course for teachers and new squash equipment worth £500. It’s hoped that some 6,000 children will have been introduced to the game by December 2009.

De La Salle and JCG in final of Youth Advocacy Competition Over 100 sixth form students in Jersey have participated in this year’s BakerPlatt Youth Advocacy Competition, pitting their public speaking and presentational skills against their peers in a series of realistic courtroom scenarios. The final, to be held in the Royal Court this summer and presided over by the Bailiff, will see teams of two students from De La Salle College and Jersey College for Girls cross-examining witnesses and giving closing speeches to the court. All four finalists will receive trophies, with the winners being crowned as ‘BakerPlatt Youth Advocates’ for 2009. The winning team will also receive a week-long mini-pupillage at top London Chambers, Seven Bedford Row.

Ernst & Young hit the beach

Pedestrians would have been surprised to see a group of superheroes cycling past them recently. To raise money for Comic Relief, a team from Mourant International Finance Administration donned superhero outfits and cycled from town to Gorey and back. Mourant raised £1,500 for the cause through the cycle and various other events held in the office.

Table tennis gets Deutsche Bank support Deutsche Bank teamed up with the Jersey Table Tennis Association to sponsor the Jersey Closed Championships at the end of April and the Channel Islands Championships 2009 earlier this month. The Inter Island tournament was a closely fought contest, but ultimately Guernsey’s Garry Dodd was victorious in the men’s singles, whilst Alice Loveridge, also from Guernsey, claimed the title in the women’s Garry Dodd in action competition.

NatWest rewards young savers

Ernst & Young will be out and about at the end of the month to help clean Jersey’s beaches. Last year the firm tackled Ouaisné Common, clearing the beach and sand dunes on the nature reserve of man-made rubbish; this year they’re back to do it all again.

NatWest has been encouraging young children in the Island to get into the habit of saving money with a fun competition. The winners of a recent ‘Magic Eye’ puzzle and colouring competition were Delphinie McCarthy (8) and Stephanie De Sousa (4), who each won £250 to kick start their savings accounts.

“Think of Ernst & Young and you probably imagine professional individuals,” said Nina Driscoll, Marketing Manager. “You’d be right, but our people have other strings to their bows, such as a strong sense of their role in the community, and everyone is encouraged to support their voluntary interests, whatever they may be.” Ernst & Young staff at last year’s beach clean
