BWCI celebrates 30th anniversary in eco-friendly way Staff from BWCI planted 30 trees in December to mark the 30th anniversary of the Channel Islands company. With the help of Jersey Trees for Life, they planted a variety of native species as part of the Jersey Hedgerow Campaign in St Clement.

Funding for grass roots and youth rugby

The winter weather has failed to dampen the enthusiasm of firms in the finance industry, who have continued to find ways of making a very positive contribution to Island life.

The BWCI Foundation looked to staff for suggestions to celebrate this significant anniversary. Michelle Galpin, BWCI partner, explained, “Ideas were shortlisted and then staff were asked to vote on their favourite. Tree planting seemed like quite a nice thing to do as it was also eco-friendly”. Volunteer Maria Saunders enjoyed getting out of the office for an afternoon, commenting, “The fresh air made a nice change to being at my desk, although at least we can be glad it’s not the 100th anniversary we’re celebrating!”

FirstRand has this season sponsored the appointment of Jersey’s new Rugby Development Officer, David McCormack, who with assistance from his Jersey 1st XV professional team mates, is involving many more schoolchildren in rugby, with visible benefits. David is holding half-term coaching sessions this month for budding rugby players of primary school age. Ashburton contributes through its long-standing support of the JRFC Academy and its backing of professional coach Ben Harvey, together with sponsorship for the Leicester Tigers, who host summer courses in Jersey involving rugby superstars such as Martin Johnson and Lewis Moody (pictured).

In just one month’s time over 3,000 Islanders will be plunging into Les Quennevais pool for the Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon 2010. The Swimarathon, which takes place from 3rd to 7th March, will raise money for Holidays for Heroes and Jersey Special Gymnastics Club.

The capacity of the event has been increased this year with over 450 teams expected to take to the water. A large contingent of RBC staff will be among those soaking up the Swimarathon atmosphere.

The walk is held each year in memory of Laurent’s former RBS International colleagues Peter Ward, who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease, and Iain Nash. Laurent Thebault commented, “The Christmas Walk takes place on the shortest day of the year and we often face adverse weather conditions. Amazingly, this creates a wonderful community spirit and the sense of teamwork during the Walk is a great inspiration.”

Ipes Jersey makes a difference The team at Fund Administrator, Ipes Jersey, have had a busy few months, with the newly formed Charity Committee working to donate to a number of charitable causes. These included the Jersey Women’s Refuge, which received new books for children staying there and a contribution towards a new television. A donation was also made to the Jersey Teenage Cancer Trust, following a moving presentation given to the Jersey business community, and the Jersey Rotary Club Shoebox Appeal was supported, with shoeboxes filled with supplies and gifts for 18 underprivileged children in Montenegro and Tanzania.

Schroders’ Client Director Hugh Lonsdale and his dog Raffles braved freezing winds and icy conditions recently to clean up Beauport Bay, collecting two old crab pots, lengths of nylon rope, large pieces of wood, a pallet, a broken buoy and discarded drink cans. Schroders joined the Marine Conservation Society’s Adopt-a-Beach scheme at the start of the year and staff are set to take time out to pick up rubbish and check beach conditions once a quarter.

Putting the art in partnership Foreshore has launched a competition for sixth form art students to commemorate its Global Partnership with Durrell. ‘Protecting the things that matter’, a fundamental feature of Foreshore’s brand, started with its support of the Caymanian Blue Iguana in 2004 and has gone from strength to strength. Students are tasked with interpreting the spirit of Foreshore’s special relationship with Durrell through paint, textiles or photography. A prize of £1,000 is on offer, to be shared between the winning student (or group) and the school’s art department. Judges include Lee Durrell and artist Jason Butler, and judging will take place on 24th March. The closing date is 19th March. For further information, call Kayla Orr on 752302.

Swimmer and surfer crowned at AIB House

The Swimmers’ Swimmer of the Year Award and The Surfers’ Surfer of the Year Award are unusual in that they recognise all-round qualities rather than pure performance, and are voted for by the Clubs’ members. The winners, AIB Tigers Swimmers’ Swimmer 2009 – Henry Job, and Jersey Surfboard Club Surfers’ Surfer 2009 – Ben Bates, were presented with their awards by AIB Jersey’s guest of honour, Professor Ed Sallis, Principal of Highlands College.

The main organisers, Laurent Thebault from RBS Coutts and Tim Renault from Dominion Corporate Group, were delighted to have clement weather, which was in stark contrast to 2008’s walk which took place during storms.

For the fourth consecutive year, RBC Wealth Management is sponsoring the event, working closely with the Lions Club to ensure that the Swimarathon remains one of the best-supported charity events in Jersey’s calendar.

AIB Jersey runs a variety of cultural, environmental and sporting sponsorship programmes. In December, the organisation held its annual Sponsor Reception, which included an awards presentation to the AIB Tigers Swimming Club and the Jersey Surfboard Club Association.

A record 138 walkers donned their walking boots for the RBS International sponsored Jersey Christmas Walk on 21st December, raising £17,000 for Jersey Hospice Care and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

More than 1,400 Christmas trees have been recycled following the Jersey Hospice Christmas Tree Collection, sponsored for the third year running by Brewin Dolphin, the private client investment managers and stockbrokers. Funds are still being collected, but £18,000 has been pledged in donations to help Jersey Hospice in its vital work for the community.

Winter walkers raise money for local charities

The recent snow and dark winter nights have not been deterring 14 determined runners from Stonehage, who have been meeting regularly to train for the 2010 London Marathon. 35 runners from Stonehage’s offices worldwide are entering the marathon, headed up by Team Captain Bruce Fordyce, a long-distance running legend from South Africa. Last year’s runners raised £100,000 for CLIC Sargent and MaAfrika Tikkun UK. This year’s target is £200,000.

Le Gallais & Luce Partner Christopher Lakeman said, “We are pleased to start the appeal and to work with the Connétable to raise funds, especially from businesses – like our own – which are located close to the site of those momentous events 229 years ago.”

FirstRand Private Wealth Management and Ashburton, two subsidiaries of the FirstRand Group with offices in Jersey, are funding grass roots and youth rugby.

A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

Law firm Le Gallais & Luce have joined with the Parish of St Helier in launching the Peirson Art Fund to celebrate the life of Major Peirson, the young hero of the Battle of Jersey. Major Peirson died of his wounds in January 1781, after ignoring the orders of the Lieutenant-Governor, who had capitulated to the small invasion force. The fund will enable the parish to select a suitable piece of art and make it a permanent tribute to this great man.
