‘RBC-side’ supports Cancer Research UK Over 100 staff from RBC Wealth Management took the beach to the Royal Jersey Showground for this year’s Walk for a Cure.

Four RBC teams, supported by team mascot ‘Leo the Lion’, walked for 24 hours last month raising over £4,000 for Cancer Research UK. Walk for a Cure brings together communities, survivors and those who have been touched by cancer to celebrate life and help raise money for this worthwhile charity.

In June a group of 10 children affected by the long term consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 stayed with Jersey families and took to the waves for the first time at St Ouen’s Bay.

Epic intercontinental triathlon

The Jersey Link of Chernobyl Children’s Life Line is part of a UK registered charity providing holidays and recuperation to children who are battling against the long term health problems caused by the Chernobyl disaster. The surfing experience was made possible thanks to the support of AIB Jersey, the Jersey Surfboard club, Laneez Surf Centre and El Tico.

Appleby Table Tennis Open Day One of the children is up and away

Children in Kenya and the Ukraine are now sporting old Jersey Rugby Academy kit, donated by the Academy as part of the charitable project SOS IRB Kit Aid. The Jersey Rugby Academy had a large amount of old kit to donate thanks to local fiduciary services company and primary sponsors, Dominion, who provided the players with new branded kit this season.

Giles Corbin, Partner at Mourant Ozannes, and two other Jersey residents, Mark Peters and David Agnès, will present over £15,000 this Summer to CLIC Sargent Jersey branch and Make-A-Wish Foundation, having competed an epic intercontinental triathlon.

Ernst & Young team muck in In June a team from Ernst & Young donned their wellies and spent a day clay lining a wildlife pond at Les Cruex Country Park to help provide a more permanent habitat and foraging site for Jersey’s endangered Grass Snake. Ernst & Young is the first company to sign up to the States of Jersey’s Eco-Active Biodiversity Championship Scheme. Andrew Dann, Channel Islands Managing Partner, said, “Getting involved in projects such as this not only helps us contribute to the Island’s vital eco-system but also gives our people a great opportunity to work together in a different environment.”

Sinels Advocates is supporting Jersey Heritage by sponsoring a Romans event at La Hougue Bie from 26th to 29th August. Roman and Early Briton re-enactment group Vicus will turn La Hougue Bie into a Roman camp where visitors will be able to cheer on their favourite Gladiators as Roman and native warriors display hand-tohand fighting skills. More sedate activities such as writing and mosaic making will also be demonstrated.

Jersey Rugby Academy responds to SOS

The trio kayaked 26km from Rozel to Portbail in just under 4 hours, then cycled 2,021km to Gibraltar in 120 hours. Mark and David then continued for a further 800km through Morocco to the start of the Marathon Des Sables. Billed as ‘The Hardest Footrace on Earth’, Mark took on this 250km desert run alone, finishing 274th out of over 1,000 competitors.

A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

RBC staff chose ‘By the Seaside’ as their fancy dress theme and enjoyed beach style activities over the weekend. Keen to keep the teams’ motivation up, RBC laid on a seaside themed marquee and provided food, refreshments and overnight shelter for their dedicated walkers.

The Academy partnered with Jersey Post to have the kit delivered to the UK base before it was sent overseas. SOS is a scheme where people from all walks of life with a passion for rugby, can come together and participate to make a difference to less advantaged young children’s lives around the world.

Key sponsors continue to support Branchage 2010 For the third year running Jersey Trust Company and Spearpoint are key sponsors of Branchage International Film Festival, which is taking place from 23rd to 26th September. Both companies have supported Branchage since the inaugural festival in 2008 and over the past two years have watched the festival grow in size and stature in both Jersey and the UK. Thanks to the support of Jersey Trust Company and Spearpoint, Branchage will offer another packed four-day programme of film, music and events, combining ambitious, cutting edge programming with a love of Jersey’s culture, heritage and atmosphere.

Five-a-side football fun thanks to Volaw Volaw Trust Company have arranged for Arsenal Overseas Limited, one of their clients, to donate much-needed football shirts to a local five-a-side team. ‘The Bosman Boys’ are a group of football-loving friends who are currently topping the Bromley Sanders Premiership five-a-side league, which is played during lunchtimes over the summer months at Fort Regent. The team has been playing corporate teams who benefit from their own branded strips and so they were very grateful to receive their own identity thanks to Volaw and Arsenal Overseas Limited.

Celebrating the 20th annual Itex Walk Itex and Rotary de la Manche would like to congratulate the 1,277 people who participated in the 20th Itex Around the Island Walk in June. Special commendation goes to the 790 people who completed the full 48.1 miles.

In a drive to get more children interested in table tennis, the Appleby Jersey Table Tennis Association Schools Development Programme held a free taster session for students from La Moye, Rouge Bouillon, St Luke’s and St Lawrence Schools at the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre in July. Further school open days will take place later in the year.

Carey Olsen sponsors annual yacht race The annual inter-island yacht race has a new sponsor in Carey Olsen. This year’s race in June brought together 500 competitors in 96 yachts from all over the Channel Islands and the UK. Crews varied from young families to older and very experienced sailors. The trophy for the first young skipper went to Jerseyman Tom Vallois, whilst the family crew trophy was won by Jersey’s Horton family, aboard Sunbeam.

The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, also completed his 13.3 mile walk from Le Braye to the Waterfront with 250 others, including members of the Forces - some in mobility scooters. The Itex-Rotary Trust is optimistic that its target of raising £100,000 for local charities will be met again. A ceremony to award the money raised to the benefitting charities will be held next month.

PwC and Quilter sponsor Beach Rugby Tournament Jersey’s first ever Beach Rugby Tournament took place in St Brelade’s Bay last month and Jersey Finance Members PricewaterhouseCoopers and Quilter were among the sponsors. Crowds turned up in force to watch 11 teams compete in the tournament, with Beeches RFC emerging as the eventual winners in the five-a-side final against United Banks. Alongside the tournament, a number of Jersey’s top womens’ and mens’ rugby coaches were on hand to teach those with little or no rugby experience the basics of the sport. The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway and England and Bath rugby player Matt Banahan were among the special guests and all money raised from the day is being donated to Holidays4Heroes.

State Street challenge at Creepy Valley 90 students from Jersey’s secondary schools and colleges participated in the inaugural State Street Inter-School Challenge at the Creepy Valley Adventure Centre recently. Entrants went head-to-head in a variety of activities ranging from orienteering, archery and aerial trekking, to an assault course and a general knowledge quiz. Students from Jersey College for Girls emerged victorious, taking home the State Street Inter-School Challenge Trophy and a £500 cheque for the school. Beeches celebrate victory in the final
