A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.
SPORTS
With a history dating back to the 1800s, Lloyds TSB is looking back to its heritage this year and marking its longstanding commitment to Jersey’s community by working with Jersey Heritage. As well as supporting Heritage’s membership scheme, Lloyds TSB is sponsoring the Muse film club evenings, taking place every third Thursday of the month at Jersey Museum’s private cinema. The film series was launched recently with a showing of ‘The Eagle Has Landed’, introduced by Harry Patterson, author Jack Higgins. Muse is ‘a programme of interactive culture’ hosted by Jersey Heritage.
CHARITY Going yellow Voisin law firm and Volaw Trust Company embraced ‘Go Yellow Day’ in June in aid of Jersey Hospice Care. The staff held a variety of activities including dressing in yellow for a donation, holding a cake sale and organising a balloon raffle. Overall £320 was raised for the charity. Each year the staff select a charity to support and this forms an element of the businesses’ Corporate and Social Responsibility campaign.

CHARITY Britain by bike Honey Clarke, HR Manager at Deloitte Jersey, is taking on Ride Across Britain to raise money for the British Paralympic Association. Sponsored by Deloitte, Ride Across Britain is a 1,000 mile cycling challenge from Lands End to John O’Groats. Honey said, “Deloitte is being very supportive and allowing me to work flexibly in order to pursue this goal. My experience at Deloitte is proof that a demanding career doesn’t need to stop you from continuing to achieve your dreams outside work.”
Standard Bank has once again put its support behind a golf event to help boost the NatWest Island Games fundraising efforts of the Jersey Golf Union and the Jersey Ladies Golf Association. A golf day was held at The Royal Jersey Golf Club in June and attracted 96 participants who helped to raise over £6,000. The funds will go towards sending Jersey’s Island Games golf teams to Bermuda for the NatWest Island Games next year.

EDUCATION Kitemark for Affinity Affinity Private Wealth has become the ninth company to be awarded a kitemark by Jersey Finance in recognition of its support for local schools and further education. The company provides educational support for Jersey students completing the Institute of Financial Services Certificate in Financial Studies and offers placements to students from local schools and colleges, as well as to those on the Advance Plus/Advance To Work scheme. Affinity was one of a number of companies that hosted a student on Jersey Finance’s recent ‘Life in Finance’ programme, when a record number of sixth-formers gained work experience in the industry.

Linda is aiming to raise £100,000 for Jersey Hospice Care in memory of her husband. So far the bank’s efforts have included charity weeks with cake sales, fancy dress competitions and raffles. Funds have also been raised through skydives, the ITEX Walk, Race for Life and the Jersey Marathon. Donations from the Santander Foundation have boosted the total further, which now stands at £14,630.
ENVIRONMENT Coastline Campaign As part of Ashburton’s ongoing programme to raise awareness of the local environment, the company is busy again this year supporting the National Trust for Jersey’s Coastline Campaign. Next month a team of volunteers will work on a National Trust bird hide at Les Mielles, replacing an 18-year-old viewpoint with a more modern one. The initiative supports the National Trust’s continued efforts to help people to enjoy the rich birdlife in the area. In June, Ashburton sponsored the annual Sunset Concerts at Grantez, which raised nearly £8,000 for the ‘Birds on the Edge’ project.

The finance industry in Jersey continues to make a very positive contribution to Island life.
HERITAGE Support for Jersey Heritage
Centre Point Trust, the focus of Deutsche Bank’s ‘Community Re-Gen’ project earlier this year, has been given an additional boost by being granted a UK-wide award from Deutsche Bank in the UK. Almost 70 staff volunteers helped to give the Trust’s outdoor area a makeover in May, creating a new ‘Pirates Playground’. Deutsche Bank’s London team was so impressed with the efforts of staff and the work done by Centre Point that they decided to back up the initiative with a £3,000 ‘Community Award’.
SPORTS Marathon training Mourant Ozannes, sponsor of the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon Relay Race, has been holding free training sessions for anyone who is interested in taking part. The sessions are being held once a month but the frequency will increase to once a week from September, as the big race day approaches. Training is being co-ordinated by Karen Bull of Fiteez, the official training partner of the Mourant Ozannes Relay Race.
This summer staff at Ernst & Young have been competing against each other in teams in a fundraising challenge to raise money for the charity Hope for Kids.

CHARITY £10,000 donation Kleinwort Benson has marked its 50th anniversary in Jersey with the announcement that it will be donating £10,000 to a local charity or community initiative. Staff have been asked to nominate Jersey-based charities or community projects that would benefit from the donation and the winner will be chosen by the Offshore Executive Committee and announced later this year. Kleinwort Benson was set up in 1962 by Russell Tilbrook and his wife, Florence, in a one-room office in Regency Street.

Tax Partner Maxine Rawlins is an ambassador for Hope for Kids and has been heavily involved for a number of years. Maxine has offered for the winner (voted for by team mates) to join her on a fully funded trip to one of the locations supported by Hope for Kids in Africa, to gain first-hand experience of the charity’s work. EDUCATION High flyers Year 12 students enjoyed the highs and lows of the Creepy Valley Activity Centre when schools from Jersey and Guernsey competed in the annual State Street Interschools’ Challenge. Dozens of students tackled the high ropes course, orienteering, archery and a quiz during the event. Victoria College was selected as the winner and the best placed Guernsey team came from Elizabeth College. State Street organises the competition and covers the travel costs for the Guernsey students.
CHARITY Suit Amnesty Islanders have donated suits to those who need them for critical job interviews, through Hawksford’s month-long ‘Suit Amnesty’. The campaign has seen more than 100 suits donated, many of which are designer brands including Armani, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. The project, run in partnership with The Shelter Trust, was developed to encourage people to re-gift outgrown and unwanted suits to disadvantaged and homeless jobseekers to help them back into work.

CHARITY Deutsche Bank award
A record number of sixth-formers gained work experience in the Finance Industry through Jersey Finance’s recent ‘Life in Finance’ programme
Sponsored by RBS International, 47 teams of six people took part, each team rowing 30,000m, equivalent to the distance from Sark to Jersey. The fastest men’s team was ‘Just do it’ from the Jersey Rowing Club. Jersey Netball’s ‘Team Jets’ won the ladies’ category while Carrefour Gym won the mixed category. IFG Trust won the best trust company team and RBS International’s Real Estate team won the best bank team. Competitors hold on tight
