SPORTS

A team of Year 13 students from De La Salle College has won a Jersey Finance competition to design a board game to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern financial services industry. The winning game, Status, will be manufactured so that it can be played by students participating in Jersey Finance’s Schools Roadshow programme. The team received a £250 voucher for its school and also work experience opportunities for its members. Jersey Finance’s Schools Roadshow programme works with secondary schools delivering presentations, workshops and placements to increase awareness of the career opportunities available within the industry.

CHARITY Helping hands from Hawksford Volunteers from Hawksford recently tried their hand at interior decorating. Bringing festive cheer to Eric Young House as part of an ongoing commitment to Jersey Cheshire Home, the team of helpers, which included Hawksford Chief Executive Peter Murley, spent a weekend at Eric Young House repainting a corridor then returned a few weeks later to hang Christmas decorations and put up Christmas trees in the communal living spaces.

SPORTS Awards for swimmer and surfer

Basel Trust Corporation organised a number of fundraising activities recently for the Starlight ‘Make a Wish’ Foundation.

The Swimmers’ Swimmer of the year award went to Rhianna Donaldson and the Surfers’ Surfer of the year is Matthew Chapman. The awards are unusual in that the winners are voted for by their peers and recognise all-round qualities, as opposed to pure performance. Paul Masterton, Chief Executive of Durrell, presented the trophies.

Activities included book sales, cake sales and dress down days – and, at the firm’s Christmas Party, when Directors Andy Ruddy and Grant Twine sang, staff paid to make them stop! Fundraising for the Foundation was bolstered by money raised by a small team from Basel who ran the Dublin marathon, in appalling conditions, bringing the grand total to £9,124. Starlight has already granted a wish to a child in the Channel Islands with some of the money raised by Basel and will use the remaining funds to grant further wishes.

ARTS ‘Community Art Works’ project Deutsche Bank has launched a community arts initiative to mark its 40th anniversary in Jersey.

The final of one of Jersey’s most prestigious music competitions is fast approaching. The PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year takes place next month as the competition celebrates its 20th anniversary. The winners of the Strings, Woodwind, Brass and Piano sectional heats, which took place in January, will compete in the final at the Jersey Opera House on Saturday 3rd March.

The ‘Community Art Works’ project features a competition for schools, with once-in-a-lifetime prizes for winners including having their work exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery and a week-long internship at the Deutsche Bank Guggenheim Museum. Primary school groups will also be asked for their ideas for designing a garden for a local charity, to be completed with the assistance of staff at the Bank. Charitable organisations interested in the garden project should e-mail sari.cuming@db.com. Toby Huelin, last year’s winner

Clive Barton at Moore Stephens Jersey said, “Moore Stephens Jersey is delighted to be supporting the scheme, which we hope will encourage the community to be more conscious about re-cycling and make a concerted effort to do so. In our offices we promote re-cycling by having dedicated bins on each floor and, since 2011, we have become a paperless office to reduce our impact on the environment.”

ARTS Aztec 10 photo competition

Staff are now planning innovative fundraising events for the year. 2011 saw over £8,000 being raised for Eve’s Fund, which was set up in support of Jersey Hospice by Group Managing Director Nigel Le Quesne to honour his late wife, who described Hospice as the ‘first step to heaven’.
