The finance industry in Jersey continues to make a very positive contribution to Island life. A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months. Jersey Finance is a non-profit organisation formed in 2001 to represent and promote Jersey as an international finance centre of excellence. ARTS Artistic talent

Staff at Basel Trust held fundraising events during December to raise money for Starlight, a charity that organises for wishes to be granted to seriously and terminally ill children.

Organised by the Jersey Arts Trust with support from Bedell and the One Foundation, the Bedell Creative Arts Programme is searching for local songwriters, musicians, dancers, designers and other artists to develop original work which will then be showcased in a major concert in September. Six musicians were selected before Christmas and last weekend choreography and movement workshops were held prior to the selection of dancers, who will produce their own choreography in conjunction with professional musicians.

Events included dress down days, a book sale, raffles and cake sales. A total of £3,566 was raised and this will go towards granting a wish to a child.

Students at JCG and Grainville School have been invited to form teams and then develop an enterprising initiative. Each team has been funded with £100 and, at the end of the exercise, will be judged on profit maximisation and/or contribution to the wider community. The schools and students are working in partnership with corporate sponsors Ogier, JT Global, Ernst & Young and Barclays Wealth, who are supplying mentors for each team. The winners will be chosen at the end of March.

HEALTH Eye-Gaze Project The expertise of a UK specialist who has transformed the lives of islanders with severe disabilities has been secured for 2013 thanks to a donation from the Lloyds TSB Foundation. The donation of £17,580 to Zannah’s Trust’s Eye-Gaze Project was one of nine made at the end of last year to community groups and charities across the Channel Islands. The donation to Zannah’s Trust will enable Dr Mick Donegan to make monthly visits to Jersey to continue his work with local speech therapists, local Health and Education professionals and Island charities, including Jersey Hospice, Headway, the Stroke Association and Jersey Cheshire Homes.

CHARITY Memorial walk

44 walkers participated in the full 44-mile challenge, 19 walkers undertook the 26-mile walk and 105 walkers took on the 18-mile daytime challenge. Three teams also entered the 18-mile relay challenge. Since 2002, the walk has raised over £161,000 for charity.

CHARITY Supporting JAYF The Moore Group continues to support the Jersey Association of Youth and Friendship (JAYF). Moore’s sponsorship goes towards the costs of organising and advertising events ensuring that a greater proportion of all funds raised can be used for JAYF purposes. Events include the Open Garden Scheme and the first garden opening to the public this year is Oaklands, St Peter, on 24th March. JAYF provides homes for young people between the ages of 16 and 22 who, through no fault of their own, were denied normal home life and are in need of home security and help.

The party was hosted by Grace Trust, a Jersey charity that provides practical and personal help to the needy. Staff joined other helpers to prepare and serve a Christmas lunch for 80 people, which was funded by State Street.

INCLUSION Inclusion Project After supporting Mont à l’Abbé School for the last five years, Voisin and Volaw have decided to redirect efforts to the Inclusion Project. Georgina Jeffries, Head of Marketing, said, “We realised that children leaving Mont à l’Abbé School face a whole new series of challenges. The Inclusion Project supports 11-25 year olds with special needs, many of whom attended Mont à l’Abbé School, so it was an easy decision to offer our support.” The charity, which helps the children become involved in activities that most people take for granted, most recently organised ice-skating, a trip to the cinema and a visit to Santa’s grotto.

Following the scheduled closure of a client Employee Benefit Trust, Computershare has facilitated the donation of £50,000 to charitable causes. £25,000 was given to Computershare’s ‘Change a Life’ initiative, funding international projects addressing poverty and empowering communities. Staff at the Jersey office voted for causes they would like to receive the remainder of the donation. £20,000 was donated to The Antoine Trust, offering support and assistance to children in Jersey battling with cancer, created in memory of Antoine Willing. £5,000 was given to the Computershare Offshore Dragon Boat Racing Team, raising money for Jersey Hospice Care.

The 25 strong choir was represented by all roles across the organisation, from Partners to Secretaries, with both men and women taking part.
