The finance industry in Jersey continues to make a very positive contribution to Island life.
On day one, the team worked in torrential rain clearing the whole area of overgrowth. Day two saw a new team design a space that will attract wildlife to the area, including a bird hide made from a willow igloo, a bug hotel, a pond and log seating. A tyre park and fruit and vegetable patch, with its very own scarecrow, were also added.
Standard Chartered Jersey recently welcomed pupils from Rouge Bouillon School to take a tour of its office and meet staff from the bank. The school and the bank have enjoyed a seven-year history through a very successful Reading Scheme.
A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. RBSI staff get stuck in at Samares Primary School
Standard Bank has committed to supporting junior golf in Jersey for another year by renewing its sponsorship of the Jersey Junior Golf Team.
Staff at Deloitte have voted for their top three local charities to support in 2010 and have chosen Jersey Focus on Mental Health, Jersey Teenage Cancer Trust, and Jersey Women’s Refuge.
Claire Reid, Director of Marketing and Communications at Standard Bank, said, “For over five years we have worked with the Jersey Golf Union to support the nurturing of talented young players in the Island. This is one way in which we demonstrate our commitment to working with the communities in which we operate.”
In June, they will be holding two sponsored walks; a 30k north coast cliff path route and a 10k walk around St Aubin’s Bay.
The Jersey juniors recently competed against each other in the Gothard Trophy, to qualify for the Junior Match Play, part of the 10 junior opens sponsored by Standard Bank. The winner was Steven Anderson.
Helen Gale, Community Investment Director, said, “We are really looking forward to working with these three worthy charities and hopefully we can make a significant contribution to them during the year.”
Youth academy spins into action The Jersey Cycling Association Youth Academy (JCAYA) was launched last month. The Academy has been made possible by a significant three-year sponsorship agreement with Moore Group. The JCAYA, which has been set up to attract more youngsters to the sport, will be made up of cyclists aged between 6 and 18 years and will promote safety, enjoyment and development. Kevin Gilley, Managing Director of Moore Group, explained, “Moore is delighted to play a role in enabling the development of cycling as an alternative recreational and sporting activity for the youth of Jersey.”
MoneySense programme at Grainville Grainville School recently became the first secondary school in Jersey to offer its students the opportunity to improve their financial awareness and money management through NatWest’s revised MoneySense for Schools programme. MoneySense has been developed to help secondary schools to teach personal finance and enterprise skills, using a range of engaging interactive resources. Yveline Sheldon, MoneySense Schools Coordinator, delivered the classes at Grainville with a team of five bank employees. She explained, “Managing your finances is a vital life skill and it is never too early to start learning how to budget and effectively manage your finances.”
Helping Le Squez make a Big Difference Judges from Lloyds TSB and the Jersey Evening Post sifted through a host of impressive entries to decide the winner of the first £1,000 grant awarded as part of Lloyds TSB’s ‘Small Change – Big Difference’ campaign. They were looking for organisations able to demonstrate a long-standing and ongoing involvement in community life.
Jersey Trust Company has become the first Jersey business to partner with Durrell in creating a 50:50 membership scheme for its staff, to encourage them to become members of Durrell. Jersey Trust Company contributes half of the cost of the subscription for staff who would like to take up annual membership. The scheme forms part of Jersey Trust Company’s ongoing commitment to Durrell, which included the recent refurbishment of the Orangutan Long House.
RBS Coutts supports Sport Relief 80 trust staff donned their trainers for Sport Relief raising a fantastic total of £2,800. Staff, family and friends took part in their own version of the Sport Relief Mile – a sponsored ‘Row, Run and Ramble’. The rowing team rowed 6 miles around St Aubin’s bay, while a run and ramble took place from St Helier to St Aubin. Money was also raised through cake sales, sport quizzes and an online auction.

Football in the community The first season of Jersey’s late night football league, aimed at providing young people with a fun, inclusive activity as an alternative to spending time on the streets, ended recently with a prize-giving ceremony.
The bank originally sponsored an all-male group of ring-tailed lemurs at Durrell. Last year, they also made a generous donation which enabled Durrell to introduce two females and start a new breeding programme. David Stearn, Head of Business Development at Fairbairn Private Bank, commented, “It is good to see the lemur breeding programme off to such a successful start. We hope this will be the first of many ring-tailed lemurs to be born at the Trust.” Muriel and her new infant

Angus Taylor, Managing Director of Kleinwort Benson in Jersey, said, “We recognise that the Muratti is one of the most historic Channel Island events in the local sporting calendar and we are very pleased to be able to support it.”
The Le Squez Youth Club application captivated the panel, providing details of the vital service in a community in the midst of redevelopment. The grant will revitalise the lounge and games room. Organisations including The Motor Neurone Disease Society, Silkworth Lodge, and The Witness Service Jersey were shortlisted for the second round of the campaign.
Fairbairn Private Bank was delighted to hear about the birth of a ring-tailed lemur at Durrell recently. It is the first ring-tailed lemur to be born at the Trust for 17 years.
The scheme, launched by Barclays Wealth and the Community Sports Development Team, has been a huge success according to Richard Corrigan, Director, Barclays Wealth, Jersey, “The participants have all really enjoyed the scheme and, since November, there has been a 50% reduction in incidents of anti-social behaviour in St Helier involving young people, when compared to the same figures from one year ago.”
Kleinwort Benson is the new sponsor of the Muratti. The bank has signed a threeyear deal that will secure sponsorship for the men’s and women’s competitions until 2012.

Following the tour, Deputy Head Teacher Mark De Luca told the bank’s staff that their involvement as ‘reading buddies’ was instrumental in helping to develop the children’s reading skills. Staff of Standard Chartered Jersey are entitled to two days of paid leave each year to undertake volunteering in the local community and the Reading Scheme forms part of this.

Equity Trust’s Charity Committee backs the fund-raising efforts of individual staff members, as well as raising money for its chosen charity for 2010, the Jersey Women’s Refuge. Jo Louden and Mick Henderson climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in April and raised more than £1,700 for the Help an African Schoolchild Trust. The Equity Trust Charity Committee has raised more than £12,000 for a variety of good causes since being relaunched in August 2008.
