A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

SPORTS

Two young cyclists from the Jersey Cycling Association Youth Academy (JCAYA), sponsored by Moore, represented the British Cycling Southern Region in the 2012 School Games in London last week. Le Rocquier and Haute Vallée students Charlotte Turner and Ryan O’Shea participated at the event, which included a showcase session in the new London Olympic Velodrome. Moore is sponsoring the JCAYA for the third consecutive year.

CHARITY DCG supports SCBU DCG employees, who have chosen the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) as their charity for 2012, supported the SCBU Ball recently. The event was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel and DCG staff dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland. The team greeted guests upon arrival and helped with the raffle draw and auction. The evening raised more than £15,000, which will go towards the purchase of new monitoring equipment and improving the parents’ area.

ENVIRONMENT Bug school open A team from Barclays helped Durrell to develop its outdoor classroom recently, transforming a grassy area into an interactive learning zone themed around sustainability. Staff spent three days planting hedgerows, washing walls, arranging tyres and filling them with soil, staining window and door frames and preparing bug habitats. The sustainable classroom is now ready and is expected to be used by around 4,500 youngsters each year.

EDUCATION Here for the next generation

The event, sponsored by Carey Olsen and organised by Music in Action, took place last Saturday at the Opera House. It featured performances by internationally renowned violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and critically acclaimed pianist Wu Qian. They were supported by the European Union Chamber Orchestra, which has performed around the world.

The Arboretum, planted from seeds all over the world, is now at a critical stage with urgent action required to ensure its survival. Jersey Trees for Life are restoring the Arboretum and R&H is purchasing new equipment and sponsoring the Elm Trial Zone for five years. An Open Weekend to launch the project is taking place on 9th–10th June.

Representatives from over 68 universities in the UK, as well as Australia and New Zealand, came to Jersey to take part in the 20th annual Higher Education Fair, which took place at Hautlieu School. Chris Searson, CEO of Capita, said, “It’s important that our local students are able to make informed decisions regarding their education and this event plays a pivotal role in helping them.”

SPORTS ABN AMRO runners raise funds

The team has resolved to raise £25,000 for local charities by the end of the year. A recent quiz night and ‘haircut and dye’ raised £1,000 for the Jubilee Sailing Trust in Jersey, which helps physically challenged people to sail on specially adapted boats. Other activities planned include a gala dinner, a family fete, sky diving, abseiling and various physical endurance challenges.

EDUCATION Junior Chess Championships Over 80 youngsters competed in the Appleby Jersey Junior Chess Championships at Victoria College School recently. Players under the age of 17 competed, each playing seven rounds of Swiss System Chess, with rounds lasting 30 minutes. There were six age groups in the competition. The winners of each group received a trophy, medal and certificate. The youngest player, and winner of his group, was just 5 years old!

Last month eight hardy staff from ABN AMRO Jersey swapped their work suits for tracksuits and took part in the Rotterdam Marathon. Despite windy conditions, they completed the 26 mile course, raising over £3,000 for two charities - Silkworth Lodge, a local rehabilitation centre for people with addictions, and Kids Rights, a worldwide charity concerned with the rights of vulnerable children.

CHARITY BNP Paribas gets involved As part of BNP Paribas’ commitment to the community, a team of staff has been planting and maintaining two areas of Jersey Hospice’s garden at Clarkson House. The work, which will continue throughout 2012, is just one element of BNP Pairbas’ new volunteering programme, through which all employees can spend two half days of work time each year supporting local projects. Other initiatives include working with Jersey Heritage on the development of Merchant’s House at the Jersey Museum and beach cleaning at St Brelade’s Bay with La Moye and Mont Nicolle Primary Schools.

SPORTS Ogier sponsors Kit4Clubs The winners of the recent Kit4Clubs competition were announced last month. Over 95 sports clubs registered for the competition, which was sponsored by Ogier and organised by the Jersey Evening Post to help sports clubs win a share of £10,000. 1st prize in the ‘Under 50 members’ category went to Jersey Special Gym Club and in the ‘Over 50 members’ category to St Clement’s Netball Club. The runners up were Jersey Wheelers Wheelchair Basketball Club, Jersey Ladies Basketball, St Paul’s Football Club, Regent Gymnastics Club, Leoville Sports & Miniature Rifle Club and Leonis Amateur Boxing Club.

The first phase of the project is to build five new wildlife ponds within the primary schools of St Peter, Les Landes, St John, Springfield and Plat Douet. Staff from RBC Wealth Management are providing the elbow grease to install the ponds and a donation from The Channel Island Co-operative Society’s EcoFund will fund the equipment. Staff at Sinels have kick-started a major fundraising project to mark the firm’s 25th anniversary.

Work will include a revamp of the Children’s Maze, maintenance of signage throughout the site and planting and sowing seeds in the Organic Farm. In addition, local staff will take part in Citi’s Global Community Day for volunteering and fund raising on 16th June, when they will hold a Charity Car Wash at Durrell.

RBC Wealth Management has teamed up with The National Trust for Jersey to kick off a new wetland wildlife pond project called ‘Hop to It’.

Capita Fiduciary Group sponsored the Careers Jersey Higher Education Fair for the third year running recently.

CHARITY Sinels begins charity drive

As Citi globally celebrates its 200th anniversary, staff in Jersey are gearing up to work with Durrell on a number of projects during the month of June.

JATCo, the organisation that represents the trust companies of Jersey, has nominated Cancer Research as its charity of the year. JATCo is encouraging its member firms to enter teams for Race for Life 2012, which is taking place later this month. JATCo is also holding a fundraising dinner and is asking its members to support the other two big events run by the charity – Relay for Life in July and Run4Men in September.
