The Finance Industry in Jersey is committed to making a positive contribution to Island life

In December 2008, AIB Jersey crowned the Swimmers’ Swimmer and Surfers’ Surfer of the Year at their annual sponsor lunch. Jo Gorrod, winner of the Jersey Marathon 2008 and Associate Director of AIBJerseytrust, presented the awards. The winners were chosen by their peers at the AIB Tigers Swimming Club and the AIB Junior Surfboard Academy. The awards are not performance based but focus on likability and personality projected within the respective clubs, contributing towards the overall team spirit and club environment.

A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

Through its long-term commitment to the two clubs, AIB Jersey hopes to inspire and equip Jersey youngsters to pursue successful future careers in their chosen fields, by applying some of the principles crucial to team sports.

The Financial Services Degree was launched in September 2008. A major part of it involves a study-related work placement. Students will spend 40 weeks in their first two years gaining on-the-job knowledge. For further information about the degree, please contact Michelle Gosling on 608672 or michelle.gosling@highlands.ac.uk.

RBC Wealth Management has supported the Swimarathon over the last three years and is committed to working collaboratively with the Lions Club to promote the Island’s longest-running charity event.

The scheme is the next stage in the major ‘Schools Travel Plan’ project, a partnership between Eco-Active, HSBC and the Gerard Le Claire Environmental Trust, and supported by a number of States of Jersey departments. The ultimate objective of the ‘Schools Travel Plan’ project is to develop and introduce individual, tailor-made travel plans to schools right across the Island.

Student Tasha Whipp completed her first placement with UBS in December. Summing up her experience she explains, “I really enjoyed the placement. It was challenging, but it enabled me to learn a lot of new information in a short space of time. I settled in well and felt a part of the team, gaining hands-on experience rather than simply watching and listening.”

With just four weeks to go, entries for this year’s Swimarathon are flooding in. The Lions Club of Jersey and corporate sponsor RBC Wealth Management are hoping this will be another outstanding year.

Schools are being encouraged to sign up for a pilot scheme starting in March that aims to make it safer, healthier and more environmentally friendly for pupils to travel to school.

The heats take place this week, beginning this evening, and are open to the public, free of charge:

“I feel strongly that the Island should do all it can to develop home-grown talent. The Foundation Degree provides an excellent mix of academic study and practical work experience and should produce a future generation of potential financial services managers with a broad knowledge of all the different sectors within the local Industry.”

Standard Chartered reaches ‘Leader’ status in Eco-Active initiative December 2008 saw the Environment Champions Committee of Standard Chartered (Jersey) Limited successfully achieve Level 3, Leader status, in the Eco-Active initiative by reducing use of electricity and water by 10% and paper by 20%. Launched in February 2008, the scheme provides a simple framework for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to environmental improvement, and to take positive actions to reduce the impact of their business on the environment. Initiatives have included replacing 50 watt downlights for LED equivalents that consume only 2.3 watts; the introduction of separate bins for cans, plastic bottles and newspapers; the removal of bins from under desks; and replacing separate hot and cold taps with mixer taps.

This year it takes place at Les Quennevais Pool from the 4th March – 8th March. Registration forms can be obtained by calling 878078 or e-mailing: swimarathon@jerseymail.co.uk.

Although only a small office, Basel Trust in Jersey provides a high level of support to charities, predominantly local causes. Every December, the staff raises money for a particular ‘Wish’ for a local child through the Starlight Foundation. For 2008, they supported Georgina, an 11 year old from Guernsey, who suffers from Niemann-Pick Disease. Georgina’s dearest wish was to go to Lapland to see Father Christmas with her family.

For the past few years, Europlan Financial Services Limited has sponsored the Boxing Day Cavalcade, organised by the Jersey Old Motor Club. Basel Trust grant a wish for Georgina

The team at Basel Trust got to work organising events including raffles, auctions, dress down days and muffin sales, and through everybody’s kind efforts managed to raise £1,500. They then pooled resources with Leila Wroe-Johnson’s Progressive School of Music and were able to grant Georgina her wish of visiting Lapland this Christmas. Georgina and her family had a fantastic time meeting Father Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed the whole Lapland experience.
