What’s your story? Jersey Heritage resumed its ‘What’s Your Story?’ talks at Jersey Archive in September. Sponsored by Appleby, these talks on the Island’s history help to promote the use of the Archive facilities for family history research. Thanks to Appleby’s support, Jersey Heritage has been able to open Jersey Archive on the third Saturday of the month throughout 2009 and give a series of free talks during the spring and autumn on topics relating to Jersey’s history. The last talk of the year will be held on 21st November, focusing on Jersey’s military history.

The finance industry in Jersey is committed to making a positive contribution to Island life. A great deal of hard work goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.
Maths Masterclasses for schools
Global Community Day for Citi
Ogier’s support for the Extended Curriculum Programme in local schools is continuing with a second series of Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses. The programme, organised by the Education, Sport and Culture department, began in September and runs until March 2010.
Earlier this month volunteers from Citibank (Channel Islands) Limited and their families and friends organised a beach clean at Ouaisne Bay as part of the organisation’s fourth annual ‘Global Community Day’. Staff also held a recycling event at the office where they brought in unwanted books, DVDs, videos and CDs and sold them in aid of a local children’s charity.
The Masterclasses aim to stimulate and encourage young people in the art and practice of mathematics and to widen their interest and knowledge outside of the school curriculum. Classes include the mathematics of juggling, geometric principles in nature and the solution of problems in applied mathematics that arise in industry.

The Ultimate Plunge
Sponsored by Collins Stewart Wealth Management, the series enabled thousands of Islanders, including hundreds of schoolchildren, to enjoy exotic sounds from the Congo, Eastern Europe, Cuba and the United States.
Islanders were given the opportunity to abseil down Cyril Le Marquand House in return for raising sponsorship. 150 people took part, including staff from Volaw and Lieutenant Governor Andrew Ridgway. The event exceeded expectations raising £40,000 for the charity.
Collins Stewart will continue its sponsorship of the series in 2010 for the third year in a row.
Trevor Norman, Director of Volaw, said “It’s important that local companies support charities in their endeavours. Cancer Research UK makes a huge difference to many people’s lives and ‘The Ultimate Plunge’ was a great initiative for raising awareness and funds for this deserving charity.”
