Members of La Pouquelaye Youth Centre recently enjoyed an outing to Creepy Valley Activity Centre, thanks to the support of State Street Channel Islands Ltd.
Nigel Hill of State Street commented, “We are pleased to support La Pouquelaye – the club is enormously grateful to us, and it is pleasing to see local kids benefiting from the grant our programme has made to the centre.”
Here is just a selection of updates on recent initiatives undertaken by our Members and news of some coming up in the next few months. For further information, please visit our website at www.jerseyfinance.je/community or contact Jenny Acton-Phillips on 836000.

Walking, golfing & scaring themselves senseless Staff at Kleinwort Benson have been walking, golfing and scaring themselves senseless for the Anthony Nolan Trust this summer. Eight members of staff, led by Managing Director Angus Taylor, completed this year’s Itex walk, raising £1,000 for the main beneficiary charities: Jersey Friends of the Anthony Nolan Trust, Jersey Mencap and Holidays for Heroes Jersey. The firm also sponsored the Rotary Club of Jersey’s annual golf day and six members of staff took part in a Fright Night at Gorey Castle, raising £9000 and £1000 respectively. Kleinwort Benson has a close relationship with the Anthony Nolan Trust, its partnership charity, and has helped it to raise more than £300,000 over the past decade.

Walkers takes strides to protect Green Lizard
Staff from Lloyds TSB, backed by the Bank’s Eco-Active team, helped clear weeds by sickling from hedgerows at Faldouet in support of an essential maintenance campaign run by Jersey Trees for Life.
A group of lawyers from Walkers have continued their work to help protect Jersey’s native Green Lizard. The firm sponsored another ‘Green Lizard Walk’ along the St Ouen coastline at the end of June, where participants learned more about this rare creature in its natural habitat.
Headed up by Island Director Martin Fricker, the Eco-Active Team was established following a Lloyds TSB employee ‘emerging local talent scheme’ which ran across the Bank’s operations in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man last year. The Eco-Active Group’s principal aim is to put forward ideas to reduce and counteract the carbon footprint across the business. The Jersey Trees for Life hedgerow campaign was one of the areas the team identified as appropriate.
A commemorative dinner, held at Grand Jersey earlier this month, was attended by nearly 200 people and featured speeches by past and present JSC presidents. Next month Eurosurf ’09, the largest amateur competition on the European surfing calendar, takes place, attracting teams from 14 different countries (including Jersey Finance’s very own Piers Gould!)
Walkers launched the Green Lizard Project in 2007 in partnership with the Jersey Amphibian and Reptile Group to help raise awareness and protect the species. In the coming months, volunteers from Walkers will get their hands dirty again, assisting with work on the refurbishment of the new Green Lizard enclosure at Durrell.

Exploring enterprise at Mourant
Through its global Community Support Programme, State Street has been making donations to the Youth Centre for the last two years, enabling outings such as this and providing much-needed equipment, including a trampoline, art and education materials, gaming consoles and computing and sports equipment.
35 firms responding to a recent survey conducted by Jersey Finance revealed that their financial contribution in 2008 was over £22 million. In addition over 23,000 days were worked free of charge by staff on specific community focused projects.
The competition will take place in the Autumn Term and will give Year 7 students the opportunity to design a bug house that could well become one of Durrell’s newest attractions. By opening the competition to Year 7 students, it is hoped that the project will play an important role in helping pupils settle in their new secondary schools and have a lasting, positive effect on their education. For more information, contact Kirsten Morel on 860038 or email kirsten.morel@durrell.org.

Expert delivery for Island Games kit As the main sponsor of the 2009 Jersey Island Games team, Jersey Post didn’t simply provide the team’s kit; they loaned two postal vans – and a postman – to transport their equipment to Åland. Participants and supporters were also given direct access to competitively priced services such as foreign exchange and travel insurance to ease the costs. Liz Purgal of Jersey Post explained, “This is a prime example of how Jersey Post approaches its program of support for the local community. We always try and make sure the way in which we support an event or organisation reflects our own expertise or services.”
Mourant is acknowledged as lead corporate sponsor of the Prince’s Trust in the Channel Islands and has committed £750,000 of charitable trust funds to enable disadvantaged young people in Jersey to transform their lives.
Machu Picchu trek for Jersey Cheshire Home Sharon Cushion, Compliance Officer at IFM Trust, is to trek up the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Peru, to raise funds for the Jersey Cheshire Home. The main aim is to help equip and update gym facilities at the centre. Fund raising will continue until the date of departure in September.

BNP Paribas reaches milestone
Durrell’s Education team devised the tour as a thank you to the Bank for its support during its 50th anniversary year, giving the students a rare opportunity to visit Durrell’s onsite Veterinary and Laboratory Department, meet a mammal keeper and enjoy a tour of the Cloud Forest enclosure. The youngsters also enjoyed watching the meerkats, up close and personal through the observation bubble, at feeding time.
BNP Paribas recently celebrated its 30th anniversary by holding a charity event for employees and their families at La Mare Vineyards. Activities such as zorbing, quick cricket, volleyball, petanque and a quiz kept guests entertained throughout the day. BNP Paribas made a donation to the Jersey branch of Leukaemia Research, which is also celebrating its 30th Anniversary.
Grainville student Massimo D’Anna summed the day up by saying ‘I enjoyed it so much because I saw things at Durrell that I’ve never seen before and probably will never see again!’
