Mourant Ozannes sponsors finance industry exhibition

2011 marks the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern financial services industry. This year, as in previous years, the industry is working hard to make a very positive contribution to Island life.

A great deal of activity goes on behind the scenes, from community projects and charitable initiatives to sponsorship and environmental programmes. Here is just a selection of updates on recent community projects and news of some coming up in the next few months.

Their efforts will make a difference to lives in both the UK and Africa. £1,000 could pay for 10 street children living in Tanzania to attend secondary school for a year, for example, whilst £8,000 could pay for 10,000 children in Uganda to have a rapid diagnostic test for malaria.

News in brief...

A new exhibition sponsored by Mourant Ozannes was launched at Jersey Airport recently to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern finance industry.

DCG staff make a pledge for World Earth Day Staff from Dominion Corporate Group (DCG) marked World Earth Day on 22nd April by pledging to make a difference to benefit the local community. Employees pledged to travel to work on foot, bike or bus in a bid to help the business reduce its carbon footprint. Christopher Bennett, Director of DCG, explained: “DCG is an accredited Eco-Active company and we are committed to minimising the environmental impacts of our activity”. In keeping with the green theme, employees who made a pledge on World Earth Day were given locally sourced herb and vegetable seeds to take home and grow.

Little Green Fingers Children in Jersey are to benefit from a joint project between Jersey Farmers’ Union and Bedell Group to sponsor and encourage gardening initiatives in schools.

The exhibition will travel to different events and locations throughout the year including Jersey Tourism, Jersey General Hospital, Social Security and Careers Jersey, Jersey Museum and some of the Island’s secondary schools. It charts how the finance industry has developed over the last 50 years, from the evolving physical landscape of St Helier to the key influential characters who have shaped how the finance industry looks and operates today. Jersey Finance worked in partnership with the Jersey Evening Post to find and collate the photographs featuring in the display. Volunteers from HSBC recently completed a five month-long project to create a new ‘bat tunnel’ at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, the first sustainable building of its kind in Jersey. Durrell’s resident Livingstone’s fruit bats moved into their new home, ‘Island Bat Roost’, following a complete retrofitting of the existing tunnel, involving walls constructed from 800 locally-sourced used car tyres and windows made from bottles. A new, highly efficient heating system was also installed in the enclosure, funded by HSBC. More than 330 HSBC staff have been involved in the project since it began in November last year, accumulating a total of over 2,000 man-hours between them.
