Finance industry exhibition

In our community

An exhibition, sponsored by Mourant Ozannes, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern finance industry has been appearing at locations throughout the year including Jersey Airport, Jersey Tourism, Careers Jersey, Jersey Museum and some of the Island’s secondary schools. It charts how the finance industry has developed over the last 50 years, from the evolving landscape of St Helier to the key influential characters who have shaped how the finance industry looks and operates today. Jersey Finance worked in partnership with the Jersey Evening Post to find and collate the photographs featured.

Jersey Finance prize in yacht race Jersey Finance sponsored a prize in the Carey Olsen Inter Island Yacht Race this year to mark the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern financial industry. Ada Muirhead, Technical Manager at Jersey Finance, presented the prize to Chris Deahl and James Wilding of Arrassy, winners of the bilge keel category.

Financial Heritage Week Financial Heritage Week took place in September, when finance industry workers joined forces to raise money for local charities, in partnership with the Association of Jersey Charities. Fundraising for Heritage Week was undertaken to complement the extensive charity work that already goes on behind the scenes in our finance firms.

RBS International pay to play RBS International organised a ‘pay to play’ petanque tournament with colleagues, friends and family to raise funds for Financial Heritage Week. Jersey Petanque Association members kindly coached and umpired. Budding chefs from RBS International also made a delicious range of cakes to serve as a tasty treat with the team’s morning coffee. £500 was donated in total.

2011 marks the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s modern financial services industry. In 1961 merchant bank M Samuel arrived in Jersey, followed by firms including Kleinwort Benson, Morgan Grenfell, Hambros and Grindlays. Today Jersey is a leading international finance centre, employing around 13,000 people. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jersey’s financial services industry, many initiatives have been organised including exhibitions and a competition for schools. Jersey Finance and its Members have also been working in partnership with the Association of Jersey Charities and the Jersey Charity Awards 2011 to raise thousands of pounds for local charities, complementing the extensive community work already undertaken by the industry. ‘Financial Heritage’ fundraising is continuing until the end of the year, when the total amount raised will be announced.

Golden Gala is a night to remember Over 500 members of the finance industry attended a unique event recently to celebrate the 50th anniversary and to generate thousands of pounds for local charities.

A stamp to celebrate

State Street was the lead sponsor of the event, whilst Pershing sponsored the entertainment and Bedell, Credit Suisse and Hotel de France were co-sponsors. Entertainment was provided by Rory Bremner, Acapella Brass and Inside Job. Proceeds from the evening, which included a very successful auction and raffle, are being donated to local charities through the Association of Jersey Charities.

Jersey Post has issued a £3 stamp set to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Designed by Limegreen Creative, the sheet gives the appearance of a bank note and incorporates elements to illustrate Jersey’s financial heritage including the livre tournois, the basic monetary unit in the 18th century, and the 1960 ‘Fourth of a Shilling’ coin.

‘Flash mob’ dance Guests at the gala were treated to a surprise ‘flash mob’ dance by over 30 members of the finance industry! To see the ‘flash mob’ dancers in action go to www.youtube.com and search for ‘Golden Gala flash mob’.
