Resuscitating Suburbia Syracuse, NY | Spring/Fall 2015 | Art McDonald, Anne Munly Master’s Thesis Project on the densification of suburbia through pocket utopias, collaged within the city.
16
COMMUNITY
17
Zoning codes, transportation investments, and lending practices have continued to perpetuate out-of-date, disconnected urban and suburban development patterns which lead to partial obsolescence - as we see happening in suburbia today. Contemporary ideals and forms of suburban OLIHVW\OH ZLOO EH DQDO\]HG LQ UHODWLRQ WR WKRVH RI VSHFL¿F H[SHULPHQWDO communities, particularly those that anticipated the sustainable city of the future. Through this analysis, & the combination of Colin Rowe’s top-down and Venturi Scott Brown’s bottom-up techniques of collage, this thesis proposes the creation of a self-sustaining, multi-generational community as a test case for sites of partial obsolescence within suburbia.
