Local PUV Drivers, Operators on Jeepney Modernization Program: It will kill us all

Public Utility Vehicle(PUV) drivers and operators of the Municipality of Pagbilao said that the jeepney modernization program—which aims to replace traditional jeepneys with safer, more efficient, and eco-friendly vehicles—will kill them.

According to Orlando Pornasdoro Jr., the president of Pagbilao Jeepney Drivers and Operators Association(JODA), many ‘ordinary’ citizens like him might die out of hunger, for they can’t afford to provide millions of peso to buy e-jeepneys, which the government believe as “a symbol of progress and hope for a greener tomorrow.”

“Tulad namin na simpleng mamamayan, saan kami kukuha ng pambili noon(modern jeepney)?… magkano lang[ang] kita namin, hindi nila(government) pwedeng basta-basta i-phase out ang[traditional] jeep, marami silang papataying tao sa gutom,” Pornasdoro said, 53 years old. Moreover, he also stated that the modernization program will cause drivers huge debt ‘up until death,’ explaining that the paying off of it might end up passing down from generation to generation.

“Magkano iyong modern jeep?2.8(million pesos), baka patay na kaming mga driver hindi pa nababayaran ‘yon, mamanahin pa ‘yon ng mga anak namin, ‘yong bayarin,” the president added.

However, the president also exclaimed that it is possible for drivers to afford the payment needed in buying a modern jeepney, only if the country will set a fare increase up to 50PHP.

“Talagang napaka-bigat nun sa bulsa namin, hindi ko kakayanin ‘yon. Kaya naman siguro kung itataas nila ang pamasahe ngayon, gagawing 50PHP, mahihirapan nga lang ang mga pasahero, mamamayan,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pornasdoro also expressed his empathy for commuters for he is convinced that commuters are also highly affected by the program being pushed.

Teachers give DepEd’s Operation Baklas thumbs down by Sharpaye Delivios

Teachers of Talipan National High School(TNHS) opposed the Department of Education(DepEd) Order No. 21 or Operation Baklas, as it ‘disregards the effort and creativity’ of teachers.

According to Ma’am Flor Linsasagin, a Grade 9 teacher, Oplan Baklas signifies the department’s “ignorance” of the teachers effort and creativity in the previous years of decorating classrooms.

“They should appreciate our efforts as well, ng teachers, dahil for the past years ay ibinuhos namin ang effort at pagkamalikhain to make our classrooms engaging sa mga bata,” Linsasagin stated.

NEW SCHOOL HEAD: we will continue what’s started

"

We are here for the students”

This is what Marina R, Abueva, the newly seated principal of the Talipan National High School(TNHS) said as she talked about her plans for the school under her administration, stating that she will continue improving the plans and projects started by the former school heads.

According to the principal, all previous plans and projects made will be on the school’s Enhanced School Improvement Plan(SIP) as well as in the Annual Implementation Plan(AIP) for improvement and continuation in her term.

“Rest assured na lahat po ng proyekto, nandon po sa Enhanced School Improvement Plan(SIP) as well sa Annual Implementation Plan(AIP)…Kung ano man po ang nasimulan ni Sir Greg, Ma’am Karen, at Ma’am Ning…i-susustain natin kung ano man ang mabuti,” Abueva said.

Additionally, to the extent of its power, the school head said that she will do her best in order to catch up on what the school had achieved, which made Talipan NHS became well-known—including the strengthened Boy Scout of the Philippines(BSP), Girl Scout of the Philippines(GSP) and improved water supply system.

Moreover, Abueva explained that she will also pay attention in improving and polishing the programs with the help of other stakeholders, especially if an

action’s coming out inappropriate with the present time.

“At kung ano man ang hindi na naaangkop sa panahon, magkakaroon tayo ng polishment and that could only be done with the cooperation ng ating internal and external stakeholder,” she stated.

Furthermore, the principal highlighted that what will make everything successful in school is only through the collaboration and teamwork of its people, particularly in the implementation of the projects.

“Everything in the school will be successful if done with the collaboration of one another. Ang isang proyekto ay hindi magiging matagumpay without the collaboration of all the members,” Abueva explained.

On the other hand, the administration assured that they will give the students the inspiration and the quality of education that they deserve in order to have the resiliency that the Department of Education promotes.

“Lahat tayo na nandito, katungkulan natin na ibigay sa kanila ang tamang kalidad ng edukasyon upang sila ay ma-anchor sa pangarap ng DepEd, ang black sheep program ng DepEd, ang maging matatag,”the principal stated.

TEACHERS BACK DEPED’S ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS DELOADING

Teachers in Talipan National High School(TNHS) supported the Department of Education (DepEd) Memo No. 002, s. 2024 – Immediate Removal of Administrative Tasks of Public School Teachers, as it lessens the workload for public school teachers.

“Yung pagiging Senior High School(SHS) Coordinator ay admin task yun, nagawa ko na yun dati, ma-trabaho, ma-stress at mabusisi… ang sa guro dapat ay sa pagtuturo ang pokus,” she said during an interview.

Lucila also stated that admin and nonteaching tasks should be assigned to the school head, Head Teachers(HT), and nonteaching employees

“Kaya yung admin task, dapat lang yun sa mga HT at school head at non-teaching na yun talaga ang nature of work,” the teacher added.

In addition, Lucila mentioned that the DepEd Memo is not fully implemented in TNHS as they still have teachers assigned with admin tasks.

“Hindi, kasi may coordinator pa, dapat assistant principal 1 ang hahawak noon hindi MT,” Lucila concluded.

Students cry foul over looming canteen food prices

TheTalipan National High School (TNHS) students complained about the heightened food prices at their school canteen as their allowance wouldn’t be enough for a day.

During a close-up conversation, Jake Luther Dupan, a Grade 12 student in TNHS said that the daily budget of the students tends to run out fast from buying at the canteen.

“Ayun, sa sobrang taas ng presyo ng bilihin sa canteen, nauubos ang budget ng mga mag-aaral sa Talipan,” Dupan stated.

Also, grade 10 student Zyric Renjay Tan observed that in their section, students receive an average of Php 100 allowance daily.

“Ang average na naririnig ko sa classroom na baon ay 100,” Tan shared, adding that it won’t be enough for the student as they still have other expenses such as transportation, lunch, and other expenditures in school.

However, Tan added that his teacher told them that the canteen is one of the budget sources in the school so it is reasonable to have heightened canteen food prices.

“Ok lang, kasi diba ako ay street dancer, ang unang sabi ng adviser namin ay hindi kami makakareceive ng budget dahil walang kita ang canteen, ibig sabihin ang canteen ang isa sa pinangunguhaan ng budget ng school, so reasonable naman na taasan yung price para naman may funds ang school,” the grade 10 student detailed.

Additionally, grade 11 student Leanne Catherine Luna said that due to the canteen food prices, parents would rather give food instead of money to their children.

“Since masyadong mahal, magiging problemado ang parents sa pagbibigay ng baon…rather than giving them money, they would just give them food,” Luna stated.

Due to low passing rate on college accountancy course qualification, SHS Department tightens process in accepting ABM students

TheSenior High School Department of Talipan National High School(TNHS) intensified its process of accepting Grade 11 students targeting ABM(Accounting , Business and Management) strand, following the school’s low number of accountancyrelated course passers.

In a conducted interview with Dr. Rosemarie B. Nolasco, the SHS Coordinator, she said that the ABM strand is also having its accepting process leveled up by the implementation of qualifying examination.

“Just like in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) strand, hindi basta-basta makapapasok ang isang student kung ‘di siya papasa sa qualifying examination and of course may interview rin siya para masala talaga natin yung mga estudyante na kukuha ng strand na ito,” Nolasco explained.

Furthermore, the coordinator also stated that the changes are not only designed for the sake of the school but mainly to provide a good SHS system and achieve the DepEd’s goal of producing well-prepared incoming college students.

“Ito naman kasi ang pinakang-purpose ng Senior High School ‘di ba? ang maibigay

yung initial background sa mga estudyante para pagdating nila sa kolehiyo ay marami na silang alam at madali na para sa kanila na tahakin ang kurso na ‘yon,” she mentioned.

With the new system, aspiring ABM students must undergo the first phase of qualification wherein an examination will be done and will be followed by an interview, which will serve as the final phase before actually being qualified to enroll in the school.

“Medyo mahirap po ‘yong exam pero nauunawaan ko naman po na lahat ng iyon ay para mapili talaga kaming mga bagay sa strand na ABM. Medyo malas nga po kasi batch pa naming itong inabutan pero masaya naman po dahil nakapasa naman ako,” John Nico Ruz said, a Grade 11 ABM student. Meanwhile, teachers are also in progress of forming organizations to host different activities that will contribute in the development of students in ABM strand.

“Tulong-tulong at wala at wala nang hinto tayo rito. Hindi natatapos sa pagsasala ng mga qualified students ang pagpapalakas natin sa mga ABM students bagkus, bibigyan pa natin sila ng maraming opportunities upang gumaling talaga sila, stated by Gilbert Urciana,” an ABM teacher.

Currently, Talipan NHS has two(2) ABM sections in Grade 11, composed of 45 male students and 62 female learners

However, the pilot implementation was performed by two(2) ABM sections in Grade 11, composed of 45 male and 62 female learners.

“Sa unang taon, may ilang lapses pero forgivable naman ang mga ito. Mahalaga nakuha natin ‘yong mga dapat makuha(na mag-aaral) at aasahan natin na magiging simul ana ito ng magandang future para sa mga ABM students natin dito,” Nolasco reiterated.

TEACHERS SEEK FOR ‘CLEAR GUIDELINES’

for Catch-Up Friday implementation

Teachers of Talipan National High School appealed for ‘clear guidelines’ of Catch-Up Friday also regarded as ‘Fun Friday,’ a recently released program of the Department of Education(DepEd) which objective is to particularly improve the reading skills of learners.

As stated by Merla V. Luces, a Filipino teacher, DepEd should provide clear and precise guidelines regarding the program implemented every Friday and the provided samples are not enough to fully attain its goal.

Moreover, as she conducts her final moments as the Principal with the students, she shared advices and her unforgettable experiences in Talipan National High School for students to remember forever in their hearts

In addition, she also explained how classroom decorations gives an “extra-fun” to lea rning and serves a platform of expressing creativity for teachers.

In addition, she is also in favor of the program’s objectives, highlighting that those goals won’t be possible to attain without proper guidelines.

“Napakaganda ng programang Catch Up Friday, sapagkat maraming mga mag-aaral ang hirap bumasa at kung nakakabasa naman ay hirap umunawa… napakaganda ng layon kaya dapat talaga na malinaw ang instruction,”Luces added.

Moreover, Rosilon Roperez, a Grade 7 teacher explained how instructions play a big role as a means for them to implement the Catch-Up Friday ‘accurately and smoothly.’

Furthermore, considering the situation and status of the Filipino citizens, he said that most of the commuters will not be in favor of the program as 40PHP is not an affordable amount.

“Iyon ngang hinihingi naming mga driver na dagdag pamasahe, pinapending pa ng LTFRB(Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board), tapos ‘yon pa kayang e-jeep, dito pa nga lang sa 13php na pasahe, may naungol na, doon pa kaya sa gagawin nilang 40 pataas,” the president said.

However, he also believed that the current design of the traditional jeepneys must not be replaced, as it signifies the Filipino culture and is also a part of the country’s identity.

“Tradisyon na talaga ng tao ang jeep na ganito, parte na ng kultura natin… magsasampung taon na ang jeep ko, malaki na naitulong sa akin nito,” Pornasdoro said.

In addition, despite the chaos brought by the issue, Pornasdoro remains with positive thinking of “tuloy ang

Roperez explained.

However, Rosilon also suggested his fellow teachers to regularly monitor the progress of implementing the activities as well as seeking feedback from others in order to fully perform it well.

“Kailangan ang regular na pagsusuri at pag-evaluate ng mga resulta. Sa proseso ng pagbabago at pagpapatibay ng programa, mahalaga ang pagkuha ng feedback mula sa mga guro, magaaral, at iba pang mga stakeholder,” he stated.

Furthermore, the program is also believed to be a good platform for teachers to express their limitless creativity in teaching which make students easily understand while enjoying.

“Ang mga guro ay gumamit ng iba’t-ibang pamamaraan para magawa ang pagpapabasa, mayroong dinadaan sa laro, mayrong nagpapacontest, pabilisan sa pagbasa, ang iba nama’y sadyang lumilikha pa ng sariling nilang akda gaya ng tula,” Luces mentioned.

On the other hand, students also enjoy the activities being done during Catch-Up Fridays for they also get to explore and show creativity.

“Iyong mga ginagawang activities ay talagang nakaka-enjoy and at the same time ay may katuturan po …nagbu-build talaga siya ng magandang social skills and confidence sa mga mag-aaral,” Mycko Dayate said, a Grade 10 student.

DON’T’ AI-BUSE IT

DepEd Quezon reminds teacher, students to use AI responsibly

The Education Program Supervisor(EPS) in English of the Department of Education(DepEd) Quezon, Abner Pureza, urged teachers and students to use Artificial intelligence(AI) with responsibility, as its usage is highly observed not just among students, but professionals as well.

According to Pureza, everyone must be taught the value of responsibility when it comes to using AI, alongside the importance of authenticity of one’s output.

“Kailangan natin maintindihan ang value of responsibility, keep on teaching fellows, the youngs, and even co-workers na kailangan ay pinaghihirapan ang lahat, iyong value of authenticity na rin,” the supervisor said during an interview.

On the same interview, he also said that we must always put in mind that too much dependent on technology might cause negative impacts toward development.

“It’s a matter of inculcating positive values sa mga bata at sa mga kapuwa workers na too much dependent on technology ay may negative impact pa rin sa cognitive development ng bawat isa…responsibility lang, iyon lang, that’s the word,” the EPS added.

Meanwhile, Pureza also said that he is not in favor of teachers’ usage of Artificial Intelligence when it comes to formulating questions for assessment due to its lack of authenticity.

“DepEd is promoting MDAT, in short authenticness, authentic question. We are gearing towards authentic assessment kaso generic kasi ung nasa AI eh, hindi naman ‘yan gawa ng tao, ang authenticity ng question talaga iyon ay ung self crafted ng teacher,” he said

Furthermore, he also exclaimed that the outputs of AI cannot keep up with level of human brain’s creativity and ability of providing well-crafted reason.

Talipan High to open first special program next school year

Talipan National High School planned to offer Special Program in Journalism(SPJ) for upcoming Grade 7 enrollees by School Year(S.Y.) 2024-2025 as the school has the potential to produce students who are inclined in campus journalism according to El Talipeño/Ang Talipeño(ET/AT) School Paper Adviser(SPA) Jerwin S. Tierra.

In an interview, Tierra who will be the SPJ coordinator shared that the school will begin its campaign by the months of March, April, and May to encourage elementary students to enroll in the program.

“This coming March, April, May ay magcacampaign na ang schools sa iba’t ibang elementary schools para makahikayat ng mga estudyante to enroll in the program,” the teacher stated.

The teacher also mentioned that the application for the special program has been prepared since December 2023.

“As early as December 2023, last year ay inasikaso na namin yung application niya, and ngayon ay nasa region na siya, pero division recognized na naman yung program so pwede na talaga siya simulan next year,” Tierra said.

Additionally, Tierra shared that the special program will intensify students’ learning about journalism as it provides specialized subjects that offers lessons about campus journalism that is not in the usual subjects.

“Pag-aaralan talaga dito kung paano magsulat, kung paano mag-layout, kung paano mag-broadcast ng tama, kung paano macommunicate yung information through different platforms sa public, na usually hindi natuturo sa mga usual subjects natin,” the SPA said, detailing that the special program will improve how students see, deal, and communicate informations around them.

He also added that opening the special program will raise critical thinkers and truthbearers that will be helpful in combatting misinformation.

“There is also a need for this program to be implemented in schools kasi we are also raising students who are critical thinkers and truthbearers, especially in this times na laganap ang fake news and misinformation sa paligid, so parte ng programang ito na maging medialiterate sila and with this program, matututunan nila yung skills on how to battle fake news and misinformation,” he concluded.

"Walang substitute talaga ang pagiging authentic natin, hindi iyon kayang tapatan ng AI. ‘Yong AI kasi, generic ang mga sagot diyan tsaka exact, definite, precise, unlike ang human brain na limitless at may creativity, nakaka-reason out…ang AI hindi eh, definite lang,”

However, Pureza also mentioned how it’s positive purpose is being ‘defeated’ because of people’s intent of using it in a negative way.

“Positive naman ang purpose, kaya lang the purpose is defeated kapag ginagamit siya in a negative way. Kagaya ng paggamit ng ilang learners as instant para hindi na sila mag-isip, hindi na mahirapan sa mga assignment, research, essay,” he said

In addition, the supervisor also believed that using Artificial Intelligence does not contain the quality of valuing the process or making of an output

“Kasama sa output, especially the researches, ung process ung scientific process, so kung magdedepende sila sa AI, the purpose is defeated kasi hindi na nila nadaanan one by one ung mga processes,”Pureza stated.

Moreover, he exclaimed that the irresponsible use of AI and too much dependent on it increased the risk of not producing highly-skilled professionals in the future.

“Ano mang bagay na nakuha mo sa madaling paraan, wala kang mastery diyan. At sa work application mo someday when you get a job, talagang what kind of worker are we expecting kung produkto ng ganitong pangmadalian o instant na mga bagay-bagay?”said by the DepEd Quezon EPS.

Administration on DepEd’s Plans for PISA: We will just comply

with what they want

Theleadership of Talipan National High School (TNHS) supports the Department of Education (DepEd) and its plans to salvage the country’s education system following the dismal results in the latest Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA.

According to Dr. Luningning R. Mendoza, principal, there is no other solution to the low education system but to entrust it to the Department itself, which has also begun steps to improve the system even before the release of the PISA results this year.

“First and foremost, we will comply with what they want. They know better about possible solutions, and we, who are on the ground, just need to do our part, especially the teachers in English, Math, and

Students complain about endless money contests

Moststudents of Talipan National High School (TNHS) appealed due to the never-ending money contests that are part of the activities conducted in the school.

According to the students, the competitions combined with voting using money, although voluntary, still put a strain on the pockets of many students who are forced to give.

"It's too costly. We can't always provide... especially if the amount is too high. It's also embarrassing to ask parents for money, especially if there are many expenses," emphasized Denice Japor, a Grade 10 student.

Furthermore, it was suggested that each competition should focus more on the students' talents rather than the size of their money.

"Enough with the money contests, and victory shouldn't be based on money, but on the contestant's actual ability," appealed Mitch Mieryl, 15. Meanwhile, among the mentioned competitions are Foundation Day, AP Month, Character Cosplay for English Month, and Mr. and Ms. United Nation.

However, the administration of Talipan reminded the organizations to be cautious with collections and contributions and encouraged them to adhere to DepEd's 'No Collection' policy.

DO Supervisor: Human intellect cannot be matched by AI

Abner

Pureza, Supervisor of the Division of Quezon, stated that the intelligence of humans still cannot be surpassed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) when it comes to understanding and various forms of thinking.

According to him, amidst the abuse of AI, it still cannot match the creative minds of students and teachers, many of whom are frequent users of AI-generated sites like Chat GPT.

"There's no substitute for our authenticity. AI cannot match that because it's generic, unlike the human brain which has creativity," he emphasized in an interview with El/Ang Talipeno.

Because of this, he said, it should be ingrained in the minds of every teacher and student that everything must be worked for in order to achieve genuine learning, rather than just relying on AI.

"Keep on teaching the fellow and the youngs that everything must be worked for. Anything obtained easily, you don't have mastery there," he stressed.

Science, for the future of the students,” Dr. Mendoza said.

It Is recalled that in the released PISA results by the Organization for Economic and Cooperation Development (OECD), there was almost no movement in the Philippines’ ranking from 2018 to 2022 where the education status in the country is ‘five to six years behind’ according to PISA.

“If we follow the computation (of PISA) with caveats, based on the OECD with socioeconomically

advantaged students, we can see that (we) are around five to six years behind,” said Alexander Sucalit, officer-incharge of DepEd’s Bureau of Education AssessmentEducation Research Division in an interview. Meanwhile, the school has challenged its teachers in English, Mathematics, and Science to do their best to help the students be more prepared for the future.

Due to the resurgence of HIV, AIDS cases DepEd works hard to protect students’ health

Moststudents of Talipan National High School (TNHS) appealed due to the never-ending money contests that are part of the activities conducted in the school.

The Department of Education (DepEd) will focus on strengthening health programs due to the resurgence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), especially among the youth.

According to the Secretary of the Department of Education and Vice President Sara Duterte, along with the rise in HIV cases in the Philippines, there is also an increase among those aged 13 to 19, which should be given proper attention.

“The HIV incidents in the youth sector are also increasing. That’s also what the center wants to focus on,” Duterte said in a discussion with the Sangguniang Kabataan president of Davao City.

Based on data released in February 2022, there were 1,236 cases reported among males, while there were 56 cases among females. Additionally, there were 373 cases recorded among those aged 15-24, while 56 new cases were among children aged 19 and below.

Sexual contact remains the primary mode of transmission, where 905 or 71% are from maleto-male intercourse, 148 or 12% are from male-to-female intercourse, and 224 or 17% are from both male and female partners.

To address the increasing cases, the School-Based HIV and AIDS Education Program continues to raise awareness of the disease, particularly in heavily affected areas like Quezon province.

Support from Talipan In support of the campaign against HIV and AIDS, representatives from DepEd Quezon joined forces with agencies and groups to launch the T.E.E.N.Dig Center at Talipan National High School (TNHS), aimed at spreading awareness of the disease in the province.

“The T.E.E.N.Dig Kabataan! Kalusugan ay Pahalagahan Program is initiated by Department of Health CHD Calabarzon in partnership with DepEd, LGUs and Congressional Representatives… project aims to address mental health issues, teenage pregnancy, HIV awareness, and other health issues among adolescents,” according to the Health Education and Promotion Unit.

Meanwhile, the Dealing Against the Stigma of HIV (DASH) Quezon Province continues to provide shelter while victims undergo laboratory tests at the hospital.

“They (mother and child) need shelter here in Lucena for the laboratory tests of the child, who is a PLHIV, and for the scheduled check-up at our Partner Facility, the QMC-Live Positive Wellness Hub. We accommodated them in our shelter to ease their worries about not having a place to stay here in Lucena,” the group’s post stated. In response to the rising cases, groups and education branches have intensified the free distribution of HIV testing while keeping the individual's identity confidential.

Not Taking a ‘Brake’

YengConstantino once said, "Ayoko nang pumara," a line from one of her famous songs. With the creeping deadline for the jeepney consolidation, this line rings in my ears to constantly remind me of the jeepney drivers who will bear the brunt of the jeepney phaseout. To remind me to fight alongside the drivers, the end of the rule of jeepneys on the road.

The Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) launched by the Department of Transport (DOTr) in 2017, aims to create a more "eco-friendly and efficient public transport system."

Some of you may think that this upgrade is ideal – and it surely is – but it is not worthwhile as the implementation of the PUVMP is simply stomach turning for many drivers and operators with its antipoor scheme.

Jeepney drivers are forced to cough up P1.4 to 3M in order to buy a modern jeepney unit, 17 times more expensive than a traditional one. If there's going to be "help" from the government, it is only 5.7% or P160,000 of subsidy – not reaching almost half to lift the heavy burden off of drivers.

To compensate for transitioning to modern jeepneys, a significant increase in the minimum fare could be imposed. It would strike upon a huge dent on the budgets of ordinary people like me who opt for its affordability.

As a student and commuter, jeepneys are one of my main modes of transportation. The fare is only a chunk of the allowance I budget everyday. Significantly increasing the fare would trouble

my parents – both who are Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) – who are sacrificing just to provide for us. Additionally, the current state of the jeepney consolidation will distress commuters.

Only 33% have consolidated in Metro Manila. It would be impossible to replace jeepneys in a flash, causing a public transport crisis that the government vows to prevent. With the poor planning they have established, one thing I know for sure is like most of the government plans, this as well will be poorly executed.

There is nothing wrong with aiming for a better transport system – in fact, drivers and operators are not opposed to the modernization. However, pushing the jeepney modernization program with the lack of budget and a concrete plan for the transition of jeepneys is a slippery road. Real talk, the government must listen to the woes of the horns they try to silence. The real goal of modernization will not be achieved if the masses that they call a "minority" are left behind in the process. As part of that "minority", I will amplify the calls if it means that they'll endure lifelong starvation when they step on the brake.

of wall decorations, posters, and pictures near the trash bin were what greeted me when I walked into my new classroom. This was the result of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte’s order, which left many adverse reactions. Not only is this a short-term fix, it is an insufficient and unnecessary one.

In compliance with the implementation of DepEd Order No. 21 series of 2023, Sara Duterte commanded that classroom walls be stripped of “unnecessary decorations” which include but are not limited to visual aids such as alphabets and numbers charts, as well as national heroes, and past and present leaders of the country.

To address the poor academic performance of learners, she decided to strip the walls of decorations, expressing that such visual materials are distracting them from their studies.

However, according to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) party-list Rep. France Castro, they did not provide any study before issuing their order.

Educational materials are shown to be a tremendous help, especially to elementary students. Many studies back that visual aids help in the comprehension and learning of children. Along with a colorful and interactive room, it is shown to have improved students’ performance and feel more welcome, particularly new learners.

To some extent, wall decorations, especially excessive decor, can become a distraction to learners. This can be particularly true for learners with autism or ADHD, who can easily become overstimulated.

The Teachers Dignity Coalition advised school heads and teachers to “not take too literally’ the order, as it only pertains to unnecessary decorations and posters that do not benefit the learners. Hence, class achievements like trophies and certificates, a reading corner, and a display of artwork are some of the things that should remain as they positively affect students in a way.

But, having an overly monotonous classroom is neither the solution. A bare classroom would feel like a prison, and activities would feel rather choring than productive.

batches that we would be able to create in the school year inspired me to create the same if not better outputs. As well as alphabet charts that helped me learn what only seemed to be complex words, such as Y for yacht and Z for zebra. And I’m sure to many other learners, number charts helped them learn big numbers and their sequence.

Had my previous school not had their walls painted with national heroes and their names along with their roles in our country, I would have never known what they looked like nor their importance. It is a remembrance of how they served our country.

Having said that, DepEd should focus on other important factors that negatively impact learners’ performance, such as class size and lack of classrooms. Due to the lack of classrooms in public schools, students end up being cramped into a dark and badly ventilated room.

As reported by a survey conducted by ACT back in March, students are finding it difficult to concentrate because of extreme heat, with 7,832 responding that they experienced “intolerable heat”, especially in a classroom with 35 to 50 students, which by the way is higher than the average class size of 35 students.

REAL TALK, DepEd, as they say, is not blind to the reality that there is a need to repair school facilities to accommodate a growing number of learners, yet there are still only a few buildings that are in good condition. A classroom should be an environment where students feel safe and welcome. A place where we love to learn and learn to love. This is the environment that should be delivered to us as the hope of our nation but is let down by the very same people who proclaim us to be. We don’t need a half-assed band-aid solution. We need an education department to provide quality education and deliver their promises.

Fridays, in its essence of producing an enhanced interest in continuous and developmental pleasure reading, allows six strategies linked together for the program’s better sustainability. As an avid fan of various books, students developed through routinely reading intervention is a “hit two birds in one stone” narrative, uplifting their reading comprehension and sharpened mentality at once.

A Department of Education (DepEd) memorandum regarding the program’s implementation opens to its Reading Intervention and Reading Enhancement goal with the strategies laid out on Enclosure No. 2, featuring a flow of suggested activities to be done for the day. The first on the list, ‘Reading Intervention’ which covers: pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading activities to allow readers to reflect on the text of their choice and enhance their vocabulary on words, all the while enjoying the allotted time for the soon-to-be developed habit. For ‘Reading Enhancement’ suggested routine, setting the mood for the student-readers takes the lead as their day kick-starter, allowing such an environment to be fostered and applied even inside their households, as part of the students’ free time or nightly routine of reading books, for a least 30 minutes to 2 hours. This focus on reading intervention and reading enhancement activities allow students to have a deeper connection with words, familiarizing genres, and even encourage them to write their own, for others to read.

It is true that a book you read does not depend solely on your age, may it be fiction, non-fiction, drama, thriller, or a classicalgothic book, an individual’s interest undeniably is what keeps the ball rolling. In the program’s goal to facilitate pleasure reading, there are six strategies to engage in: “Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)”, “Teacher Read-Aloud”, “Book Talk”, “Choral Reading”, “Partner Reading”, and lastly, “Read-a-thon” – for the amount of words running in every corner of your headspace, itching to be used in every-day conversation. Readers or as they call it, “book-lovers” do not start reading by becoming best at it at first try. There are three certain key stages ranked depending on the students’ reading comprehension, which shows that nothing else is deemed impossible, especially with age as part of the bigger picture. All in all, this beginners’ process of ‘sounding out words’, ‘reading aloud’, ‘picture reading’, and many more – in my opinion, will gradually become a stepping stone on developing a honed, engaged, and secured foundation of student-community for reading.

amatteroffact De Lima’s Dilemma

Freedom, for most, is considered one of the most important attributes a person could have, so having it subsequently taken away just by fighting for the truth and by accusations without any factual basis is in a whole other level of absurdity, personally, I find it to be very stupid and downright unjust. Such is the case of what happened to Former Senator Leila De Lima who became imprisoned for well over seven years due to honestly baseless accusations. Now, seven years is a LONG time for someone so it’s utterly infuriating that those who even caused her to be stripped of freedom in the first place seem to have not received what they deserve after all this time.

On February 24, 2017, De Lima was arrested due to several “drug-related charges” pertaining to her apparently doing drug deals with prominent drug lords and users that are under custody. Mind you, this is just one of the many other cases that we’re filed against her by none other than the absolute lapdogs that are the supporters of the Former Philippine President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Administration. Need I remind you that De Lima was once a firm and proud critic of the Former President so it’s honestly no doubt that these absolute gremlins would react in such a way that would shut De Lima up, and that is to find a way to make her lose her freedom of speech, and by extension, her freedom entirely; considering that, it’s just practically pure bullcrap to have those particular shoekissers of Duterte’s to be running around without consequence now that De Lima’s cases are proven to be lacking on evidences. For starters, let’s not forget those lousy, so-called witnesses of De Leila’s opposition that retracted their claims like the piss-poor cowards they are when the jury didn’t find any viable evidence to begin with. As a matter of fact, two of the opposition’s witnesses, Maj. Rodolfo Magleo and Sgt. Nonilo Arile have shamelessly recanted their testimonies in court last October 12, in a personalized letter for De Lima stating that they are “bothered by their conscience”. This is just nerve wracking, considering that De Lima seriously got locked-up by the proofless accusations of these absolute dogs; all bark and no bite. Also, let me also discuss the fact that the so called “evidences” against De Lima is just absolutely weak as all hell; in some cases, they’re pretty much non-existent. In 2018, the UN Working Group of Arbitrary Detention themself stated that De Lima’s detention is pretty much “arbitrary” due to how lacking the accusations are in the legal basis department and how inconsistent and delayed the court hearings were due to prosecution witnesses not attending. This for me almost feels like some sick horrifying

is a technique found in curing indecision and doubt, solely using a coin: I’ve heard that as the coin reaches midway up to the sky, the choice that sits in our headspace is the needed answer to the many choices that continue cloud our mind. With ‘Catch-Up Fridays’, a decision has been made for our silent worries regarding the reading intervention.

joke to know that De Lima basically lost over 7 years of freedom because of absurd evidence against her that amounts to nothing but a fart in the wind.

Finally, I would like to humbly and politely discuss the elephant in the room that is that this is basically a team effort of Duterte’s little army of hooligans to silence De Lima’s criticism towards Duterte’s ways. Prior to her arrest, De Lima is known for calling out Former President Duterte for his inhumane ‘war on drugs’ tactics, specifically about how this ties down to a much recent issue of the infamous extrajudicial killings in 2018. Like most truth seekers and fighters in our time, De Lima has been silenced by the blind supporters of the opposition in the worst way possible; her freedom stripped away, caged like a bird. Yet, I do understand that many also consider that De Lima has been too pushy and feisty for her own good. Even before Duterte’s appointment as President in 2016, De Lima, as a part of the Human Rights Committee, had always disapproved of Duterte’s highly immoral ways of dealing with drug related crimes back when he’s the Mayor of Davao City. This dragged on for years and it led to what we have now, but despite her over-the-top insistence, she still pretty much didn’t deserve this.

The newly implemented program, effective starting on January 12, 2024, provides the learners its advantageous state in targeting the reading comprehension and literacy of the students, starting the month of January dedicated to the ‘Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)’ activities. This called “DEAR” strategy allows the students to have read a book of their choice in a given time of 30 minutes. This mentioned strategy is used as a stepping stone for feedback from field implementers on the program’s guidelines, will of course help shape the program in the future, for its effectivity and sustainability.

and 20 minutes. A sample class program for Grade 1 learners in the K to 12 Curriculum was presented in a table replacing the sample-subjects starting from 7:20 AM to 10:00 AM, the time allotted to focus solely on National Reading Program (NRP).

The second half, however is focused on the enhanced Values Education, Health Education, and Peace Education, while also having a Homeroom Guidance Program before the day ends –starting from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The second half subjects are linked to other related subjects. For example, as the memorandum discussed, “the

related concepts, while Peace Education can be integrated into Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), exploring technology in the means and to keep your peace by conflict resolution.

For a Grade 12 student who spends half the day in her institution and has specific subjects in a day, I commend on having scheduled class organized and separated from the category of the subject’s focus. Talking about the possible enjoyment regarding the reading interventions and activities, it might be a downside to only have 2 hours and 20 minutes for students who are eager for more.

Unemployment,

definitely one of the several things that certainly can’t help but notice to be very significant and evident in our locale. Many freshly graduated students find it hard to find a job, even with their acquired set of skills and degrees. But now, with the K+10+2 curriculum entering the fray, it would honestly be way easier for future job-finders like us to find a paying job, even without going to college.

thefootprints

K-10 out of 10

As a solution, it’s only that those responsible for having De Lima detained without proper evidence, witnesses, and accusations should receive some sort of welldeserved punishment. It is certainly unfair and unreasonable for us not to have these wretched story makers have a taste of their own medicine. There are quite a number of intriguing cases of well-deserved detention and imprisonment in today’s modern world. As a matter of fact, one has to admit that it feels good having those hell-born perpetrators get what they deserve. But in cases where it’s definitely undeserved, such as De Lima’s, some might admit that there has to be a way to spare De Lima from her dilemma.

The K+10+2 curriculum is said to be implemented to replace it’s former, the K to 12 curriculum; this is said to be the case due to how the K to 12 system did not meet it’s promise of job ready graduates. The new K+10+2 curriculum would provide kindergarten to grade 10 education with the additional 2 years being optional for those who would want to pursue vocational courses and additional studies, otherwise, they’re set to find a job after 10th grade.

Unlike another education system plan, the MATATAG curriculum which aims to lessen the number of competencies students need to account and study for; as a matter of fact, this new system aims to actually solve something that I can see is a big issue currently, which would be the lack of employment rates here in our country.

As the sad reality of the market world entails, it is pretty evident that big businesses prefer hiring college or university graduates over those who graduated the K to 12 curriculum. It would be a huge thing for students such as myself if we have it in our own hands whether we want to pursue big jobs by taking the years as well as college or if we want to be set to work immediately on smaller jobs while still having the choice to plan for our college education.

This also gives us more time to save up for our future college expenses or drop it all entirely. As a matter of fact, even I find it intimidating to go to college immediately after graduating high school, a lot of students surely finds it rather intimidating, so it would be nice to at least have some time to prepare and get a temporary job to at least have the money before stepping on the doors of a university.

Some families, mind you, also doesn’t have the capability and the money to send their children to college. Which means having this new system would give these families time to save up. This new education system can also give newly-grads the opportunity to look and find a job much earlier to help sustain their family’s needs. Since financially challenged families are a huge factor in terms of poverty. It’s an absolute no brainer that having family members find jobs much earlier can diminish the rate of poverty for even just a little bit.

As students, we can confirm that even if we have at least a half-baked plan on how we're going to find a job and function as a normal citizen in the future, the anxiety of having to spend years of our life studying just to have a job is definitely there. So, with the implementation of the K+10+12 which pretty much solves that problem, I’m proud to say that for me, this new educational system is a 10-out-of-10.

Kong vs Godzilla

The world of politics is nothing short of a spectacle; full of drama, conflicts, and the most blood-pumping fights between tyrants. This comparison could be very well applied to one of the most recent topics that is definitely the biggest plot-twist of the century: the so-called “destabilization plot” against President Bongbong Marcos by none other than. Former President Rodrigo Duterte's recognized supporters. Considering these two of all people are known to kiss each other's ass like there’s no tomorrow, it's a wonder why they are suddenly trying to take each other down all in the name of who will go on top like the powerhungry savages that they are.

The alleged destabilization plot against Marcos became the latest Buzz due to a now-viral post by an undisclosed vlogger involving retired PNP Chiefs and the AFP who conveniently and just-so-happens to be well-known supporters of the former President. The post, which had been taken down, involves photos and a video deliberately convincing Marcos to step down on his position as president by none other than said law-enforcement officials. The destabilization plot, as expected, was swiftly denied by the PNP; though this absolutely does not eliminate the fact that the inevitable battle between two renowned tyrants might be at hand, a battle intricately staged for Duterte to usurp the throne of presidency.

First and foremost, if we think about it, now would be the most perfect opportunity for Duterte to backstab Marcos due to his daughter's influence over the government being more present than Marcos. Last year, Vice President Sara Duterte dominated the people trust survey with a rating of 83% compared to Marcos’s 78% and 43% just before that. With more ways than one to ruin Marcos’s reputation and have him discharged, Duterte seems hellbent on taking back his position in

the thousands liked in our country during the Duterte administration's war on drugs campaign; which, scorching to Former Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, resulted in Duterte having pending cases and an arrest warrant that is “just around the corner”. The destabilization plot might be nothing short of a scare tactic towards Marcos or a publicity stunt, but one thing is for sure, Duterte's brash, ape-like behaviour isn't enough to go through Marcos’s thick skin.

Moreover, it is clear as day that Duterte's destabilization plot cannot be denied any longer for it has been confirmed. According to the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), General Romeo Brawner, the plot is orchestrated by former AFP officials with connections to the former president and that they are calling for stage rallies and the replacement of the current President Marcos. It seems to be that even Duterte's puppet strings has its reach on literally every tight space, as can be seen by these absolute puppets that these former officials are.

This is not the first instance the words “Duterte” and “destabilization” are linked to one another. In fact, way back in Duterte's administration, a number of miners allegedly

orchestrated a destabilization plot against Duterte following his orders to initiate a nationwide mining ban, with the courtesy of the late Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Gina Lopez. Though the plot did not really come to fruition, this did almost make a dent on the throne of the king of monsters that is Duterte.

What we need right now is clarifications on whether or not this destabilization plot would be detrimental to our nation as a whole. The government should give an adequate amount of attention on dissolving this destabilization plot. After all, a battle between these two rushes would definitely cause nothing but destruction in their wake.

A tough-skinned, dirty reptile with the current title of the king and voracious, dim-witted ape who formally ruled: both of gargantuan proportions. Literally nothing else would be perfect candidates to represent Marcoe and Duterte respectively, especially now that a war has seemed to spark between them. And with just that, there is absolutely a possibility that this conflict between them may be our country's version of Godzilla vs. Kong.

nofilter BackSTABilization

Asa student, I see no difference between high school and politics. Both full of drama, ambivalence, and unexpected turns; and it seems like ‘Gossip Girl’ may have dropped the biggest bomb this new year: Former President Rodrigo Duterte allegedly backstabbing President Bongbong Marcos. More specifically, a destabilization plot against the present administration. Everyone in high school – the government and citizens – anticipate the unfolding of this development and its effect on Philippine governance.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) debunked the destabilization plot against Marcos, claiming that there are monitors of such after a viral video affiliating PNP Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. and other government officials to the said plot. The subject to this complaint, however, is a retired military officer which deeply disappointed the Chief with this act of betrayal.

Regarding the allegations, Duterte has denied holding secret government destabilization meetings with police and military officials. It is no secret that Duterte is strongly allied with the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Former Senator Antonio Trillanes said so himself, a former naval officer. It makes me think that it is only sensible for a PNP officer to exclude himself from the involvement, especially if someone like the former president have you under his wing. And what would be Duterte’s motivations behind this plot other than to get back in power. The reason could be simplified to the breakdown of his criminal syndicate, with its members now in the run and facing charges such as the 18 police colonels and generals

on illegal drug trading. So now, Duterte is using his minions – retired military officers, active AFP, and PNP members – to advance this destabilization plot. To fight the accusations, PNP Chief Acorda Jr. ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group to identify and file charges to the vlogger. However, top the Center for Media From and Responsibility, the warning issued by the PNP against content creators who “destabilize” the Marcos admin should be viewed with concern as any interference by the police that results in shutting down goes against the freedom of expression. As a campus journalist, although a vlogger is not equivalent to one, I believe everyone’s right to expression should not be infringed, especially when voicing out concerns about the government. With no filter, whether or not Duterte denies his involvement in the alleged destabilization plot, speculative talks of it is not a good sign and does no one any good. In this high school-like mess of a government where popularity contests and overthrowing each other still persists, three things always lead to downfall.

– whether to a new place or thing – is not an easy move. I could say so from the huge adjustment I had to make when I transferred to a new school. This is the same feeling that will arise with the abrupt decision by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to discontinue offering senior high school programs in state universities and colleges (SUCs) and local universities and colleges (LUCs). Although it's time for these programs to go back to where they rightfully belong, this leaves students in a tight situation in continuing to achieve their educational goals.

The senior high school program will not come to a halt entirely. They are only discontinuing SHS programs in SUCs and LUCs due to a Department of Education (DepEd) memorandum on December 18, stating that it has no more legal basis to fund it. The transition to K-12 that started in 2016 has been supposedly long done in 2021. However, the pandemic hindered the completion of this and has been long overdue.

As a student, my main concern is its possible adverse impact on the quality of education.

Accompanied by the approximate 17,000 displaced students in Grade 11, the sudden shift may cause an increase in class size that may become burdensome to educators and facilities to handle. This is something that they have not created a concrete plan for yet, and clearly the memorandum has not been well disseminated for us to not be shocked.

Additionally, this shift could become a huge

adjustment in terms of the programs that each track and strand offers. For instance, I may prefer the programs offered in the STEM strand in school

A rather than school B with the same strand. The situation could create a huge learning gap due to the differences in programs if they were to transfer schools in accordance with the DepEd memo.

What the government can focus on now is addressing class size issues and monitoring DepEd resources. Along with this, a bridging plan or program to ensure a smooth transition to the schools they'll be transferring to. It definitely will be an obstacle along the educational crisis we are already facing.

REAL TALK, they should not have let the completion of the transition period to linger. If the DepEd memorandum had been disseminated widely and prominently, and if they had halted this sooner shortly after the pandemic, students would not get caught in a predicament with CHED’s sudden demand.

found myself singing 'holy dog, saintly horse' amidst the echoing controversy surrounding Pura Luka Vega, a drag queen who seemed to disrespect the sanctity of God with her "Jesus Performances".

Currently, Luka is persona non grata in many cities due to her provocative actions and the simmering anger of Filipino fanatics.

It cannot be denied that the Philippines is a conservative and religious country, so it's understandable why the locals are boiling mad at Luka. Her dressing up as the Nazarene spread like wildfire on social media. The wound of the fanatics seemed to worsen when Luka performed to a remix of the Lord's Prayer.

Performing in such a manner has long been a practice for Luka, who claims it's her way of "worshiping" the Lord.

According to scriptures, the said prayer was written by Christ Himself when He was still alive, so many raised their eyebrows upon seeing her performance. Currently, Luka remains adamant in seeking forgiveness.

While Luka's intention was not to hurt anyone, it has

happened, so if you ask me, the most appropriate thing she can do now is to reflect and ask for forgiveness.

Because of this issue, the entire community of the third gender or LGBTQ is implicated. Many are now urging to further block the implementation of the SOGIE bill. Related to this is the statement of one of the most prominent representations of the community in politics, Geraldine Roman.

According to Roman, "As a Catholic, I am hurt... but please don't think that all of us in the community are like this."

TO SUM UP, Luka's gender has no relevance to this issue, but rather her irreverence towards the faith of the majority of Filipinos. It's a folly to demand freedom in art while barking like a stray dog against the views and beliefs of others.

Promised Land

Cheapshots, insults, and threats—that's the hallmark of a Duterte Administration.

But now that his term is over, it seems like a different tune is coming out of his mouth. Everyone was shocked when he floated the idea of Mindanao seceding from the Philippines. A seductive yet deceptive proposal reminiscent of a poor puppy poised to pounce on the "Promised Land".

Aside from the trending news of Ogie Diaz's explosive revelations, there's the explosive news of island separations. During a press briefing in Davao, the former President Digong announced his advocacy for Mindanao's separation from the Philippines. He claimed it could be achieved through signatures.

Duterte's drama supposedly left Mindanao behind, so it's timely for it to break away from the country to flourish on its own. On the other hand, some can't help but wonder about the former president's true intentions regarding this proposal, perhaps it's solely for personal interests and gains, which is why many are opposing the idea.

Floating Ignorance editorial

It'ssaddening to think that while some students are burning the midnight oil, others choose to lounge around, relying on Artificial Intelligence or AI to carry their grades. Although AI greatly aids teachers and students in their tasks, it gradually diminishes their skills. Sometimes clinging to a balloon flying in the sky, only to realize it burst, it's just a waste of money, a waste of everything, if progress is backwards and fake.

On November 30, 2022, San Franciscobased OpenAI launched their Chat-GPT. Its aim was to expedite various aspects of our work, but its impact on the current generation is unavoidable. The "generation of laziness and ignorance" seems to be a product of this technology. Technology whose system may help but is costly in initiative and originality.

With the release of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results in 2023, the sad truth emerged that the Philippines ranked 77th out of 81 countries. This is clear evidence of stagnation in the field of education. In fact, AI could be considered one of the main reasons why we continue to lag behind in educational quality. The talent and wisdom of each individual cannot be matched by technology.

Although AI has the ability to provide sufficient information for studying, it cannot address every student's needs. Not everyone possesses the same level of knowledge, and there are students who require intensive guidance and support that AI cannot provide. Personal attention from teachers not only imparts knowledge but also inspiration, critical thinking skills,

This issue is not caused by technology but rather should be directed at how it is used or abused. As they say, "work smarter, not harder," but in this case, avoiding hardship leads to mediocrity. The use of AI-powered search engines is effective but not sufficient.

We hold our future in our hands. AI is effective, but it cannot replace the importance of teachers in shaping critical thinking, creativity, and social skills of every student. True interaction in the classroom cannot be diminished by any technology.

This poses a hindrance to the realistic assessment of a student's progress, especially if it relies on artificial intelligence. It is clear that today's youth value high grades more than the true cultivation of their minds. If this continues, the minds of Filipino youth will wither and become dependent.

At first glance, AI is an enticing balloon. However, it is deceptive because the comfort it provides is only temporary and its reach may not be far. No matter how high the balloon soars, it will eventually burst, and if we are still found hanging on

It seems like the former president is still hungry for power, wanting to establish his own kingdom once again—the Republic of Mindanao. Seen through international lenses, this separation is not favorable. It paints a negative image for foreign investors looking to invest in the country if its leaders are advocating for division.

As a young journalist, I strongly oppose this idea. It's another proposal with hidden interests. This should not happen especially when unity and cooperation are what the country needs. The promised land is a trap to be nailed once again to a meaningless proposal.

Bana-National:

How Ate Joyang’s bananas nicks everyone’s heart!

Life is a book, the start may be full of sadness, and melancholic moments, but turning to the next page may bring anger, frustration, happiness, and countless more to those who read it.

Ate Joyang’s story is more than unique, bringing a smile to everyone, be it kids, adults, anybody can’t resist the urge to laugh out loud at her banana-larious humor. In the Municipality of Pagbilao lies many wonders, one of them being the “Banana Queen”, and that person is no other than Ate ‘Joyang’, bringing JOY to everyone with bananas.

THE Banana Queen

In Pagbilao, lives a 30-year-old woman named Joyce Glorioso, also known as “Ate Joyang” in social media, crowned as the “Banana Queen” for her unusual yet hilarious usage of bananas, and her hilarious humor.

She boomed on TikTok as a comedian with a whopping 2.5 million followers otherwise known as “kabananas”, and with this being in interviews, billboards and even in teleseryes!

Her videos and her humor typically consist of her dancing with no emotion on her face whatsoever, a weird combination but enough to make one chuckle, giggle and perhaps laugh.

Alongside her comedic skits, she also vlogs and endorses products for certain brands she does sponsorships with. Although her vlogs aren't without hers without her special twist to them, like she does with her comedic skits.

Both a 'Blessing and Curse'

A book can not only have ups, it also has its downs, but it also has its comebacks. The pandemic struck and it impacted her ability to cheer people up due to not being able to go out. During this period, she and her friend saw the opportunity to continue doing what they loved doing, bringing joy to everybody using their unique traits.

Although with the come of creation, comes the scarcity of ideas. As she kept on posting consistently, she started losing ideas, she didn't know what to film, but she didn't let that hinder her from doing what she typically does, bringing a smile to everybody's face, especially when times are rough.

“I don't let anything stop me, I just go with the flow.” said Ate Joyang. Despite having huge obstacles in her way, attempting to stop her from doing what she does, she doesn't make a way, she goes with the flow and takes opportunities that are there for the taking, and gives her all while doing so. “Work Smarter, Not Harder.” said her.

The Awaited Happy Ending

As of now, she's one of the Pagbilaowins whose name pops out in conversations all over the Philippines. Thousands of people she can make laugh and smile at her content, even when she's thousands of miles away. Alongside gaining a huge following, this was a huge success in life for her.

When times are rough, and you're given an opportunity to make somebody smile, do it. No matter how small or big it may seem to you, nothing changes the huge impact this has on the other person. It's true that JOY is true, thanks to Joyce and many more. It's fun making people laugh, and seeing them laugh, can make it fun for everyone.

She wants everybody to know that “You don’t have to fit in with the others, you can stand out with your uniqueness and accept who you truly are. We’re all beautiful in our way.” quoted her. Her story shows that being true to yourself can have huge effects on you and the people around you. Even if there are limitations to what she can do, she knows that it doesn’t mean it’s her time to end her story. With the use of bananas, she eventually got the alias “Banana Queen” and proceeded to nick everybody’s hearts, with the secret power of bananas and THE Banana Queen.

Are there

Massacres

on Massacres Island?

We get rattled when we hear the term “Massacre” as our heads fly to the thought of wars, fights,or even deaths. But will that fear creep in if the massacre is an island,a beautiful ,calm shore,as this island is a “beautiful massacre”.

A specific island, called “Patayan Island” or “Massacre Island” (in English) located in Pagbilao Grande is sure to kill somebody with its compelling views, attracting people to go and visit an island with an unusually scary name. However, is there still life on an island called “Massacre” Island? Or has it all been massacred by something or someone?

‘Isle’ Massacre Island ‘Massacre’ Patayan is a very famous tourist spot, and considered as the longest sandbar in the entirety of Pagbilao, consisting of beaches, very prosperous forests, and sights to kill for. Its aesthetic is hard to be on par with, as its views are deadly like the name suggests, however, it’s not only the views that’s killer, but also its history.

The island requires no entrance fee and is a measly 40 minutes travel from boat, thus explaining why it’s quite famous with the tourists. However, with the ‘law’ of the island, the only payment it requires of you is to keep its shores clean and tidy, and it should keep you safe, lest you break the ‘law’, should you get ‘massacred’?

The island is quite habitable, with people going there to fish and sometimes even camp, however nobody stays at the island when sundown comes around the corner, however it’s totally safe to camp on Patayan Island! The life there prospers, totally opposing the name of the island, all marine, social/ tourist and natural life continue to prosper to this day.

I’ll ‘Massacre’ The island has killer views, and its history doesn’t fail to be on par with the killer vibes, literally. The history of the name “Patayan/Massacre Island” is quite dark, it being about the pirates bringing their victims to this specific island to execute, torture them, their motives unknown, with an uncountable number of deaths, the island remains a true mystery. Despite the dark past, nobody in present time has seen any supernatural nor massacres happen on this island ever since, perhaps it’s the ghostly aura that makes this sandbar to kill for. This story has stuck to the island and to the people who inhabit it, and it remains the only recorded history of the island and its haunting name.

‘No Massacre’!

The island has its massacres, both literally and figuratively, but surprisingly it continues to prosper thanks to tourism and the money it provides the island and to the people who manage, go there to make a living, and to protect and make sure the tourists are safe. “This island will continue to prosper, hopefully, but it’ll keep doing what it keeps doing best, keeping its to-kill-for views.” Its polar opposite becomes reality, and the final verdict is that there are no massacres on “Massacre Island”! The island has its roots buried deep, and no matter how much storms, floods, sea level changes come its way, it remains standing strong, even in current times. Its nature, marine and social/ tourist life will remain lively as can be.

But not all islands are safe from mysteries, including this one. It might be lively, full of life, but have you ever stopped to wonder if on the other plane, the other side, this island is also full of life? What supernatural forces could roam this island? What, why, where and when? We will never know, unless we visit this island ourselves and see everything for ourselves.

InTHE THREE STARS OF TALIPAN

the bite of darkness and the deepening of night, the three stars that make up the woman Orion become visible. Symbolizing resilience, strength, and certainty with a singular purpose that cannot be shaken by anyone.

Like the stars shining in the sky, the three teachers at Talipan National High School continue to provide illumination to the school. They remain steadfast and loyal despite the influx of issues and continue to serve the school and its students until the end.

As the number of licensed teachers leaving the country increases, so does the opinions and perspectives of other teachers here. Many have been persuaded to leave the country because the salary there is double that of the Philippines, but for the three teachers of Talipan, namely Ms. Perlita Del Mundo and Ms. Visitacion Dupa of the TLE department, and Ms. Lily Cuarez of the Science Department, staying where they started is a sacred duty and responsibility.

Three teachers with different reasons but the same behavior, aspiration, and principle in service - to teach properly and with quality to every Talipeno.

Among the three, Ms. Perlita has devoted almost half of her life to service. For over three decades and five years of teaching, waking up in the morning and facing the students every day has

become her norm. She said she has no regrets about what she has done, but rather she is even more motivated because teaching has been her dream since forever. That's why she can't see herself leaving and abandoning the school.

Moreover, Ms. Dupa has also been serving Talipan for over three decades. Despite hearing rumors of teachers like her leaving to seek their fortunes in other countries, she chose to stay because she felt that Talipeno still needed her service.

And lastly, Ms. Cuarez, who only retired after two decades of service in Talipan. She said that when she was still teaching, retirement and leaving the place where she started never crossed her mind. Because for her, teaching is a responsibility and requires strong dedication.

Despite the tempting benefits in other countries, these three stars remained unyielding and loyal to the school that shaped their identities. They continue to provide light to the Talipenos, a sign that they will never be broken or separated by anyone.

They are the historic trio-stars that formed the legacy and history of Talipan.

The Ancient Talipeño: Witness of the Tale

Inthe dawn of a phenomenon, there’s always a witness in what it goes through before it reaches success.

In remembrance of the 50th year of the establishment of Talipan National High School, we’ll stumble upon the witness of all the experiences of the school, the Acacia tree – located at the centre of the school.

The history of Acacia has already been attached to the life of every Talipeños. It has been a go-to place due to its fresh air, and the tree has a tranquil atmosphere –on which every Talipeños go there to relax.

If we are talking about its vigor and durability, this tree can be matched, since it has been through many battles, and yet it hasn’t been fallen.

Aside for all the benefits that has given us by the tree – being a go-to place to rest whenever there’s no

classes, this Acacia tree gave memories to every single Talipeños.

According to Ma’am Bernadette Dupa – Grade 8 Teacher, the Acacia tree has been long planted - before she even came in TNHS. Then, she thought of looking after the tree until it grows and give history and be beneficial to all students.

She added that it became her solution at the time there was not enough classrooms. To make the tree useful, they added benches there so that students can study there when there’s no classes.

For more than 50 years the acacia has been there, it is noticeable how much it witnessed the history of TNHS. It also followed the tracks and the unforgettable

Forsome people, they have erratically frightening experiences during their ECQ days. However, for Filipinos - aside from watching or making videos in TikTok, some are definitely in their phones and laptops - that are vastly genial.

See, who wouldn’t fall in such a bizarre story with a catching, riveting event between two characters in movies and series. However, it’s not a connection between a man and a woman - but a connection with two boys - which is more prominent as BL or Boys’ Love. BL is a genre specifically ‘homoerotic’ manga and novels in Japan. According to Fujimoto Yukari, a manga researcher in an article published by nippon.com, the culture of BL started in the 70s and dragged on in Thailand, China, Taiwan and other countries in Asia, and Philippines is one of them. It is a story of two men, and just like any other ‘love team’, BL gives a remarkable story in regards to their life and relationship.

Nerissa Nañadiego, 35-year-old teacher in Talipan National High School (TNHS) is one of those who enjoyed staying in her room during the never-ending community quarantine to watch a BL series on YouTube.

“Watching BL series opened my mind with the different stories that helped me understand more the struggles, challenges and even the happiness people would get

getting into a relationship with the same sex. Everything has a nascency, and watching BL, I got to know more deeply the different parts of the community”, Nerissa said.

She recommended the BL series that she already watched, for the reason that she believed it would be the way to make people be aware of the truth and the true definition of loving freely.

“I would recommend BL series to other people to watch because it’s a great way for people to be more accepting and appreciate everyone in the community, that all of us are humans that are loving, that the parameter of love doesn’t measure color, race, or gender," she added.

For a LGBTQIA+ member Jhon Rob Avellano, 17 and a Grade 11 student, aside from his favorite actors Elijah Canlas and Ian Pangilinan that starred in the series Gameboys and Gaya sa Pelikula, he is a fan of exquisite lines and plots about real-life situation, either physical or psychological of all people like him.

“It is relatable for us that are part of LGBT. We understand the different stories that are published because we’ve been there. Of course, it’s ok to buzz the ‘acclas’ even sometimes in stories and actors that are winsome that you’re looking forward to every week. It is gladdening because we have representation, and many people acknowledge the genre.”

Apart from the image of romance between two men, there are some stories that show controversial issues such as civil partnership, equal rights, free speech and other

stories that violate the accustomed culture of society and believed to be the only right view of most people until now.

“BL series showed me the value of inclusivity in our society. The spectrum of gender orientations are voluminous and we need to fathom and respect them,” Jhon said.

BL fans believe that watching these kinds of programs will give opportunity to discuss various issues that involve LGBTQIA+ members for other people to understand, especially those who don’t accept their existence.

“I also learned it’s important to introduce the existence of LGBTQ to other people, especially to our fellow citizens. Because most people are blind to these kinds of cases. If they don’t have any knowledge about this, there will be many discrimination towards the third-gender and our community,” Jhon added.

No matter what show we’re watching, there will always be lessons that will be engraved to us in regards to the significance of everything. BL can always mark meaningful and valuable lessons to our life, and can make us understand our complicated society due to situation and time.

BL series are not only made for us to have fun and to rivet on, but BL can ‘ignite’ us to the existence of LGBTQIA+, and create ‘spark’ to change our society, and will remain in our culture.

A Defiant Voyage: Samson & Delilah’s Tough Row to Hoe Odyssey

For some people, they have erratically frightening experiences during their ECQ days.

However, for Filipinos - aside from watching or making videos in TikTok, some are definitely in their phones and laptops - that are vastly genial.

However, this story has been going on for a long time to make it modernized. Is it cogent to say that love is a strength - that Delilah is Samson's life and strength?

Whereas, it’s not a person, but Delilah is a profession in Samson B. Porte’s life, a 59-year-old jeepney driver in the town of Pagbilao. For almost a decade, he’s always been alongside his jeep that he always called “Delilah”.

A companion to all fellow Filipinos, this profession brings him, especially his wife and children to life.

2016 - which is Delilah, and it’s been his companion until now, so that he can finance the needs of his family. In almost a decade that he's been maneuvering his jeep, he founded some properties and cars, and his 18-year-old and 14-year-old children go to school regularly.

According to the note of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LFTRB), more than 300,000 traditional jeepneys will be replaced this year, and more than 100,000 jeepney drivers will be affected, as well as the operators of the country.

Samson started as a seaman in the 90s, and after one and a half decade, he came back to the country as a driver. Ever since then, the Porte Family’s business is having someone drive their jeep and border them, but when he no longer pursued shipping, Samson is the only one who drove them.

“I thought that I could go back in 2014, but when I found that my papers were expired for going to another country, I chose to be a driver, because I was old when I came back… I can no longer be in heavy work”, he said. He started with four jeepneys, but when his situation of life worsens, only one remains in

Only recently, he feared the phaseout of traditional jeepneys in the country, like Delilah. Associated with the jeepney modernization program under the Public Utility Vehicle Program (PUVMP), with the purpose of making the traditional public jeepneys to completely disappear on roads, and replacing them with electronic jeepneys.

This news caused fear and dread to all Filipinos, especially to jeepney drivers, and it drew annoyance and anger to all people.

“I need to take a 2-million loan to get that jeepney, to sum it all up, the income in a month is almost P10,000, it’s still not enough to pay the loan, how about the daily expenses”, Samson said when he heard the news.

He added that his income is almost P1,500, P500 goes to his jeep’s fuel, thus he only takes home P1,000.

“I am willing to exchange my jeep, but I am hoping that there's government support, and it won't be sudden, and another thing, jeepneys are one of the traditional symbols of the country, it's a shame if the design of the jeepney is changed”, he added. According to the LTFRB, the design change of public transport vehicles can cause beneficial impact to our nature, and can reduce carbon emissions to our environment.

Even if the deadline has stepped back, people like Samson continue to fight for all fellow jeepney drivers.

As opposed to an ancient Bible story of Delilah snuffing out the life of her young boyfriend; the story of a modernized Samson continued because of his companion, and is now joined by a similar companion - that will always remain ineradicable in his heart.

HERStory Maker:

A journalist's JOURNey through the surreal world of JOURNalism by Jazmine Roperez

Forsome people, they have erratically frightening experiences during their ECQ days. However, for Filipinos - aside from watching or making videos in TikTok, some are definitely in their phones and laptops - that are vastly genial.

As a story goes there’s always the beginning, the middle, the climax, and the solution, but this journalist calls her climax “her crescendo”,from making the impossible possible she has made her role clear that nothing is “IM-possible”.

Any journalist's life is no easy feat, it may just be words and news, but there lies a secret oasis, a world one can explore infinitely and freely. "A man is no island." she thinks, as none of her battles where fought silently alone, oppositely loudly with the whole teams sacrifices.

The Shoreline

Ronalyn P. Portes, a graduate with high honors, a qualified 2023 DOST Scholar and a former Editor-In-Chief has reached the olympics of campus journalism and being the first ever Talipeño to reach this, getting to somewhere that some considered near the "bullseye". Despite the failure, she has succeeded in inspiring her juniors and future journalists.

Science Writing is certainly not an easy category to be in, as you would need background knowledge, an intensive amount of research, a passion for writing, and a goal to keep you motivated. "4 years ago, from something that I said and I quote 'I wish…' turned into something much more than that. I figured out that it was in me all this time."

She's a hard worker, achieving feats that one would consider impressive, or perhaps doing things that nobody else would dare to do. She's fearless, and all she has to say about it is "What's there to lose? No matter if I win or lose, it's never the end of me and my journey."

Sliver of Courage

From changing categories, starting from Copyreading and Headline Writing, and category to other categories. She had potential, yet they couldn't find what she excels at, be it Feature, News Writing or Editorial Writing. "I trained her and Kristel for Copyreading and Headline Writing and Ronalyn was the one who won." said and quoted Jerwin S. Tierra, their coach.

This year's School's Press Conferences

can be in any shape or form, whether it be a person,a thing, hobby,or an animal. “A dog is a man’s best friend” and definitely is,Polly has not only made his owner happy but so many more because of how strong and courageous this happy pill is.

Any shape or form definitely applies to this super dog,as he is disabled but never doubt that he hasn’t made so many people happy in his doggy years.

Polly!

Anybody who spots a dog can’t help but smile at these loyal friends who’d do anything to protect their owners and friends and play for hours unending. Their unending stamina is their main charm, being able to play fetch, and many more games for hours. “Dogs are our best friend”, says some.

Polly, a 4-year-old Aspin, who is a part of the family Marasigan, who resides in Brgy. Talipan, Pagbilao, Quezon, is no different than any other dog, the energy and the ability to make others smile is there, but there is something that makes Polly more distinguishable.

Polly was born with a defect that affects their two legs at the rear, but that doesn’t stop them from going out there and living their best life, making themselves and others around them happy.

“Ma’s Lucky Charm.” Resilda, Polly’s fur mom, cares for Polly, and also runs a business at a nearby school to care for their needs and wants. According to some students who go to Resilda’s shop occasionally, “It never fails to make me smile, just to see Polly with their smile and energy whenever we’re on our way home.”

Polly’s signature move, the “Handstand” attracts customers to buy at Resilda’s shop, and due to their energy and glee, it just makes everyone want to keep coming back to watch it do its move that most dogs can’t do.

“Polly was born by our other pet dog, Ging-ging, when it was out of her mother’s womb, she looked… odd. We didn’t expect her to live long, but here we are now, 4 years and she’s all grown up. Polly’s energetic, and attracts customers. What else could we ask for? Polly is our lucky charm.” quoted Resilda.

“I’ll stand on my own, Ma.” Although born with a defect, this doesn’t limit what Polly can do. It can play, run and do tricks, like any other dog. It will never be considered ‘normal’ to only have two legs, but that’s what makes Polly unique, their hands are also their feet, and they’ve lived like this for 4 years.

The regulars at Resilda’s shop see Polly almost every day and have made up a funny little harmless joke for it. “If Polly were human, they’d say… ‘If you can’t use your feet, use your hands!’” said them. This could also apply to us, in many ways, not just feet and hands, but with everything else. In life, we can sometimes fall and go lame, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try and attempt to stand again. Polly is a living testament to that matter. Nothing’s missing, as Polly’s also a dog, who has both legs and arms. Nothing’s missing, it’s all complete.

were no easy battle, as the training was much more different from her usual training, transitioning from Copyreading & Headline Writing to Science Writing, two opposites. She had a rough start, adapting to the new world of Science Writing, and being exposed to much more numbers and percentages, unlike the old days.

"When you do something, don't force yourself to learn it, learn to love it and it'll become easier as time goes on. It's the passion and drive that kept me going." she quotes. This is what helped her, alongside the support and help of her fellow journalists, she had to not just learn but to immerse herself in the world of journalism, and Science Writing. More Coasts Uncovered

"The path wasn't easy, I started to doubt my abilities, but I never gave up because of the singular reason that has kept me going, up until the olympics of campus journalism. If it wasn't for Sir trusting in me and my fellow journalists helping me get here, I probably couldn't have gotten here. Their motivation became my motivation to keep going and fighting, no matter if I win or lose NSPC." She said.

Even though it wasn't a win, she still made it to NSPC and was there to experience it fully, and now her name will be written in papers and books alike. From an "I hope…" became an "I can…", inspiring her predecessors and current and future journalists.

"Journalism isn't just about words, it helped me realize my true worth and value. It's not just the achievements, medals, awards or my IQ that define me. It made me see much more than that." She says and quotes. Life was never a competition about who has the higher IQ, it was about living your own life and getting to where you want to be.

I wish, I hope, and I can

She has lived her journalism life to the fullest, despite the struggles and setbacks, she did it for the team and to prove to the whole world that she and everybody else is capable of something unique. From what seemed to be nothing turned into something extraordinary, you just had to 'wish, hope and do' to be able to 'can'.

POVERTY PORN

Abuse in the portrayal of Poverty

Perhapsyou've reacted to online videos that evoke sadness and pity. It's undeniable that these videos tug at our hearts and appeal to emotions akin to a melodramatic TV show. However, despite their intention to evoke sympathy and understanding, there's a type of media that raises serious questions about the ethics and dignity of the people involved - it's called "Poverty Porn."

"Poverty Porn" is a controversial type of media that often uses images and videos of people in poverty to elicit sympathy, donations, or attention from viewers. At first glance, the intention of such shows seems noble. However, over time, questions about ethics and dignity in depicting poverty arise.

This type of media often leads to stereotyping and reinforces negative views about the poor. Instead of providing genuine knowledge and understanding of the issues of poverty, it perpetuates stigma and discrimination against these people.

According to Jessica Lee, "Poverty Porn is the issue of the generation and shouldn’t be because we are supposed to be the lead generation, and our generation is leading the wrong way."

As responsible citizens, it's important to be critical of the information we receive from the media. We should ask ourselves how it affects society and whether it helps or harms those truly in this situation.

According to Dr. Lidelia Rodriguez, an expert in media ethics, "To avoid

falling victim to poverty porn, it is important to examine every online content we follow. We should ask ourselves whether the portrayal of poverty aims to provide genuine knowledge and understanding, or if it's just a tool for selfish gain. Promoting respect, dignity, and understanding for people in this situation should be the primary priority in choosing the online content we endorse."

Studying and providing the right context for issues of poverty are essential to achieving genuine understanding and cooperation for real change.

In conclusion, we should scrutinize the types of media we follow and support. While it's important to address and discuss issues of poverty, we need to ensure that respect and dignity are given to those affected. Promoting knowledge and understanding should be the primary goal, not using poverty as a form of entertainment or a subject for personal gain.

Maria Motherhood:

Lessons carried by a teenage Mother

Justas everything teaches one another, pregnancy is something that opens various doors of possibilities. Thus, it should be carefully considered; it needs preparation. It's a decision that only teaches the path of being a mother—a path that must be taken at the age of fourteen by Maria.

Maria was in eighth grade then at Talipan National High School and like other kids, she dreamed of a bright future for herself. Fourteen. A very young age, one might think, but it's the age that changed the girl's life.

Maria was thirteen when she met Jeremy (not their real names). It seemed like their hearts painted each other's eyes every time they saw each other. For their young hearts, their relationship would be colorful—vibrant, passionate, intense. They saw the world early. Unexpectedly, Maria got pregnant.

Like the expected reaction of other parents, her mother was shocked and didn't immediately accept the news. Maria's father passed away when she was still young. Their mother raised them alone. So, it was quite a surprise for her to find out that her youngest daughter was now pregnant.

But Maria knew that what she got into was a responsibility she had to fulfill because it's a result of her decisions. Maria stopped schooling to take care of the life growing inside her womb.

Indeed, there's nothing that can compare to a mother's love.

Even though Maria's mother didn't initially accept her pregnancy, she gradually learned to accept what happened to her daughter. She helped Maria during her pregnancy.

Nang maisilang ang anak, sa halip na panghinaan ng loob ay mas nakaramdam si Maria ng kagustuhan na mag-aral sapagkat nais niyang mabigyan ng maayos na kinabukasan ang anak na si “Totoy”.

She returned to studying while also supporting herself and her child with the help of her mother. Unfortunately, Jeremy, the father of her child, left her.

"I really struggled because my child was still young, and of course, it was my first time being a mother, so I really had a hard time adjusting," said Maria.

Every day, she goes to school.

At eight o'clock, her mother prepares to take Totoy to school so Maria can breastfeed him during recess.

Sometimes, Maria herself takes her child to school to watch over him while she strives to study.

"It's just heartwarming because

despite being a young mother, she's very responsible. I've never seen her child dirty. Totoy is such a well-behaved kid too. Even when Maria scolds him at school, I've never seen him make noise or lose respect for those around him. Maria is a good mother," according to her teacher.

This was the scene from ninth grade until the young woman finished Junior High School. She graduated with honors and is now going to college.

Maria's story, a case of teenage pregnancy, cannot be denied. It's an issue our society has long struggled with. However, Maria's story serves as a reminder that being a young mother is something that should not be a s ource of shame.

Happily Depressed: The

Romanticisation of Mental Illnesses

Alot

of people say that the feeling of genuine happiness is very hard to find, like a needle in a hay bush or a rock thrown into the deepest depths of the ocean, however in reality you can find happiness everywhere -- literally – The Gen Z has found unique ways in attaining joy, one of which is finding happiness through mental illnesses -- Or to put in common terms, Depression--. Is this implying that in today’s generation, this seemingly taboo topic is being destigmatized? Or is it simply being romanticized?

The idea of intentionally being sad has been around for a long period of time but has just started to be romanticized during the past decade or so. A lot of young people seem to be addicted to the idea of being sad, Having the urge to stay unhappy is seemingly inevitable for this generation. A lot of people – specifically teenagers – had found comfort in intentionally being ill. The thought of being different has played a big role in shaping the mindset of this generation, Standing out and being recognised for it has been a big feat in the recent years.

The Stigma

Most psychological disorders don’t manifest physically, they are often times more deceptive and because of that, the people who don’t know much about mental illnesses tend to find it less believable

“Back then, if you had any major mental disorder, you would just be seen crazy or just weak” according to Cole Hastings -- A Psychologist and YouTube content creator.

But starting around the mid or late 20th century, there was a big push in the west to destigmatize mental illness.

Using Film -- The most influential part of pop culture at the time -- We were able to portray realistic and humanized versions of mental illnesses to the public.

Because of this, we were able to understand mental sicknesses better and we are able to depict this in real life thanks to the help of Films.

The ability to share our everyday experiences with our peers using social media has been very influential in shaping the perception of psychological disorders we have today.

We are no longer forced to formulate our opinions about mental illnesses based on how famous media sources portray them.

Now, we can get more insight into the day to day lives of people who really suffer with these illnesses and form a more accurate conclusion and perception about these disorders.

Sharing our negative experiences online has brought significant changes on our everyday lives

More people are willing to seek help now than there were a few decades ago

But perhaps the most positive influence that this has brought is the feeling that you are never alone.

The Romanticisation

The stigma being neutraliized is a very positive matter, however it hasas gone to the point that we are seemingly romanticizing mental illnesses.

Films have done impressive progress in destigmatizing psychological disorder, but in the other hand, it has also contributed in aestheticizing it.

For one, the film “Silence of The Lambs” – A 90’s pschological thriller – serves as a great example

In the Film, Hannibal Lecter – One of tge main characters—is portrayed as a psychopath with Supperior intelect and charm. Due to the popularity of this movie, A lot of people started to associate psychopathy with charm, causing a lot of viewers to think that being psychopathy is good and hereby started adaptingg it.

However, studies have shown that this association is far from reality, in fact, In a paper titled “The Hannibal Lecter Myth” – a paper conducted due to the impact of the film --, it has shown that intellegence and psychopathy are polar oposites. Meaaning to say that psychopaths are the exact opposites of how the Film portrayed it.

But it doesn’t stop there.

“Glamorizing psychopathy, depression, and even being a serial killer is more prominent now than it was in the 90’s” according to Cole Hastings

A lot of Films in this “Modern Generation” portray a lot of characters with severe mental illnesses which gives this sort of misunderstood enchantment to them, making the viewers get reeled and fall in lobe with the idea of maving a mental illness

“Thirteen reasons why”-- a drama film released in 2017 – is a great example for this.

A study has shown that after the release of the 1st season of this film, suicide rates of teenagers between the age of 10 -17 years old had significantly increased. Teenagers are much more impressionable and believe more easily to what are portrayed to them.

Glamorizing mental illnesses in media is a big contributor in the anesthetization of it. Films make psychological disorders look like it’s some kind of life

Scorching Heat: Infernal

style, putting the focus on tbe isolated and misunderstood life of the Litteraly Me Characters – a term used for calling characters that are relatable -- makes the viewers think that these kinds of illnesses are an aesthetic.

Due to this, teenagers adapt on what is portrayed making mental illnesses a common in todays generation.

Another factor in the Romanticization of Mental Ilnesses is Social Media.

Self Diagnosis of these kinds of illnesses has been a trend in todays Generation. Teenagers can start to believe that they have Psychological disorders if someone in the internet convince them that they have it, specially if you don’t have the skill to differentiate temporary feelings to the actual symptoms of ths illnesses

A lot of people – mostly in thee new generation – seem to be addicted to the idea of being sad because there is certainly “Beauty in Suffering” especially in the way it is portrayed in social media.

The drama and sadness that mental ilnesses –specifically, depression – gives, seemingly makes life a lot more interesting and gives it meaning.

These aesthetics certainly has an alluring aesthetic to them, making users at famous social media apps like tiktok and instagram capitalize on the tendency to be allured to the negative thoughts.

“A common Phenomenon in the stories of people from tbe internet is that they genuinely believe that they are nothing without their traumas and insecurities and depression and that they don’t deserve to be happy” Cole Hastings

People tend to make these experiences their personalities and go on and live life without going out from that trap they call depression.

“.... I wish that I can tell my younger self to not feel the uncertainty that comes with looking for help” from a person who commented on the video

Although it can not surely be told whether these illnesses aree being romantisized or not. It is not a good idea to stick on being Happily Depressed. Depression and other mental illnesses are a serious matter which needs profesional help. Always choose to be the happier and healthier version of yourself.

Effects of Hot Weather on Our Generation

You've just finished bathing, but you feel sticky, sweaty again. It's no longer surprising, because nowadays, one can feel the scorching heat that truly resembles infernolike effects on most people.

This year, the country has recorded definite scorching heat, as the heat index reaches temperatures not lower than 40°C in various parts of the Philippines. The heat that envelops every Filipino now undeniably has a burning effect on health.

Just like Ron Dave B. Delos Angeles, a Grade 12 student at Talipan National High School, who truly feels the intense heat that embraces his body in the midst of noon. According to him, he often feels fatigued, cramped, and some parts of his skin seem to burn.

"I really feel the heat at this time, even with simple walking, I immediately feel

fatigued and start sweating," said Delos Angeles. According to studies, infants, children, and those aged 65 and above are at higher risk of experiencing heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and rash. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has also warned that temperatures reaching 42-51°C could lead to fatal heat stroke. Heat stroke is one of the most serious illnesses associated with heat, and it occurs when the body can no longer control its own heat. The body temperature rises to 106°C or higher within just 10 or 15 minutes.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), an estimated 118 cases of students affected by heat exhaustion have been reported.

"This heat exhaustion is a level that can also lead to heat stroke if not addressed promptly," emphasized DOH officer-incharge Maria Rosario Vergeire.

For this reason, the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Pagbilao town reminded the public to ensure safety during the hot season by wearing thin clothing, avoiding direct sunlight, and drinking water regularly. Amid the threat of continuously rising temperatures in the country, one should not aggravate the situation with heated tempers. Many may complain about the sultry environment and the hot conditions of classrooms, but like so many times before, there is nothing else to do but to double the caution against the infernal effects of heat at present.

A Familiar Stride:

The Once Again Rise in The Cases Of Walking Pneumonia Worldwide

Whatdo you do when a familiar face comes walking up your doorstep? Probably, opening the door and giving it a welcoming embrace is the most common response. However, what if this familiar stride is only here to cause serious trouble?

Atypical Pneumonia or more commonly known as the “ Walking Pneumonia ” is a respiratory disease discovered in 1944. It is commonly caused by a bacteria called Mycoplasma Pneumoniae . It is a less serious form of Lung Pneumonia, yet do not be complacent. It still has the ability and potential to cause complications.

Knocking Once Again

This illness has once again took the spotlight.

China has recorded a significant increase in the number of confirmed cases of Walking Pneumonia. According to reports, more than 1000 cases of diseases have been associated to the Atypical Pneumonia and majority of the infected are children and elders who have low resistance to these kinds of illnesses.

According to Dr. Gary Sy -- a licensed doctor-“Natawag itong Walking Pneumonia dahil hindi mo alam, naglalakad ka lang may pneumonia kana pala”. Due to the mildness of the symptoms of this lung disease, it is very hard to distinguish, hence, making the people unaware that they are already the said disease.

Studies show that 70% to 85% of the recorded cases of Walking Pneumonia are mild. Yet, 20% of the cases are moderate to severe. Although there is only a small chance for this illness to cause serious complications, we still can’t be at ease.

Closing The Door

There is still no vaccine for this illness so there is no immunity offered for the community. The Atypical Pneumonia can cause severe complications like, swelling and irritation of the brain called Encephalitis and Hemolyctic Anemia which is a type of Anemia that irritates the red blood cells.

Though there is no vaccine for this illness, still, there is an available cure for it. Since it’s a disease caused by a bacteria, doctor prescribed antibiotics can fight the bacteria and basically, cure the disease.

Since there is no immunity available for the Walking Pneumonia, the best we could do is prevent it. According to Dr. Gary Sy, “Observing proper hygiene and avoiding crowded places will definitely do the trick.”

Though this illness doesn’t pack an immediately felt punch,we could not deny the fact that in the long run,it’s familiar and oddly fast stride will surely be felt around the globe. The best we could do is to learn closing the door for unwelcomed visitors. Learn to stay inside and live life the safest way possible.

CLIMBmate TO SAFETY:

The Elevating Displacement due to Climate Change

Homes

getting washed away by floods along with every git of hope for reform.

Wells getting dried up not only causing drought, but also doubt if there will ever be a cure to this mass issue. A problem longing for an immediate solution yet the world always turns a blind eye to it’s devastating effects.

Since 2008, an average of 24.5 million new disaster-related internal displacements per year have been recorded globally, with 95% of these displacements associated with weather induced disasters like flood, landslides, storms, and droughts.

It has driven millions of innocent citizens to a state of panic and stress for they no longer have a place to call home. Seemingly falling in bottomless rabbit hole. What could be the ladder that the people have to climb in order to rise from the turmoil the world has brought upon us?

The Turmoil

According to a United Nation report, extreme weather has caused more than 43 million children to be uprooted from their homes and this outrageous number has a possibility to triple in the next three decades. This turmoil was said to be caused by the extreme climate change which has gone to a point where it is breaking records-- not in a good way--according to National Geographics, this decade has been the decade where climate change is the most evident in the last 140 years which is absolutely alarming.

Verena Knavs-- global chief for migration and displacement of UNICEFF-- stated that, “The places that are most at risk depends on the location and also how much countries have invested in preparedness for Risk Reduction measures”. Countries like South Sudan and Somalia are at high risk of displacement due to the constrained and limited capacities to evacuate and lack of the ability to give updates. “Islands in the Carribean, also in the Pacific are at risk, which is evident since 60% of children are being displaced in these areas due to it’s location” also according to her.

Schools where once the most common and convenient evacuation centers people use in times like this, yet now,it has become a liability. Due to the state of calamity, schools are no longer a place of

according to Refugee Agency of the United Nations

200 million people will be displaced by 2050 due to sever climate change conditions

comfort for countries like Ghana and Libia who are experiencing flash floods with the capacity to wash out entire cities. Once a place of knowledge, now a place of fear. The lack of proper evacuation is certainly life threathening to not only the children but also everyone living with them. The elderly, the disabled and each and everyone seemingly has one foot in the grave if ever a disaster like that one again hits.

The damages that this disaster has caused is truly something that will never be forgotten. The carelessness that the world is showing right now would certainly lash back like a speeding truck hitting us in full motion.

Ladder to Climb

This is certainly a problem longing for an immediate solution. However, the world is acting too slowly, putting million of homes and lives at risk.

A call to invest more in the Risk Reduction Measures of each country, this may be it. If everything that the world is experiencing right now isn’t enough to open the eyes of each individual living on this Earth, then I don’t know what will. The lack of investments for the safety of each citizen is stinging us like a buzzing bee. People were not prepared for the intensity that this calamity is packing,it caught everyone by surprise. But perhaps it is not too late, the condition will only get worse from here so as long there are people living, there is still a chance to invest in our preparation for the events which are unfolding.

The world is drowning in a lot of aspects. It is drowning in debt, sorrows, and floods caused by the tears of each individual who has loss a home and a vision of the future. But,let not the drought give you any doubt. There will always be a hope so CLIMB,climb and thrive until the flood is no longer evident. Work together to save the Earth, cause if we not,we would lost the only thing keeping us alive,we would lose our homes.

according to the United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF)

HUNGER GAMES: THE EVERYDAY BET OF STARVING FILIPINOS

"As long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve," a famous line of the movie, The Hunger Games -- said, but on real battle of life --how is it possible to keep oneself when even the smallest yet most essential thing to survive seems so hard to fight for?

Almost 2.9 million Filipinos are said to experience extreme hunger last 2022, according to a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) last July to September. This figures are out of 14 million households being considered as part of the poverty line --and poorest of the poor, duly accounting to almost half of the country's population.

Ironically, local farmers from Northern and Central Luzon, and even parts of Visayas and Mindanao are disposing harvest surpluses due to low selling prices. Hence, causing them monetary losses even after a bountiful harvest.

This unbalance distribution has been a growing problem since the start of the decade and probably would still be a problem in the following years; the security of food for Filipinos being an every day game to win for.

“This is food safety -- it's non negotiable,” Bo H. Holgreen, the founder of Scholar of Sustenance (SOS) said as he highlighted the essence of food security for Filipino families.

DYSTOPIA

According to Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) almost 1, 717 metric tons of plate wastes are collected every day or 95 dump trucks more-or-less. While globally, according to Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) under United Nations(UN) 30 percent of food catered was thrown as a waste.

These numbers would be definitely enough to suffice the growing number of starving Filipinos at present --just like Mary Grace Biazon's Family along streets of Divisoria.

“Kaningbaw po (kanin at sabaw),” Lara Biazon, thwe 12 year-old daughter of Mary Grace answered when she was asked what meal are they usually eating in a daily basis.

Due to poverty, their family is collecting vegetable surpluses from vegetable vendors for them to sell on their own posts -- their only source of income --definitely not enough to provide their family’s needs.

“Tinitingnan po namin kung may bulok, tapos ititinda po namin yung mga walang bulok”, little Biazon said, telling how they do their little business almost every morning.

With 619 million starving individuals around the world, a complementary balance distribution of shortage and surplus would definitely end the game.

WINNING THE BET

This obviously emerging fact served as catalyst. For Non- Government Organizations (NGO) like Scholar of Sustenance (SOS) to try to equalize the ongoing shortage and surplus --by doing feeding programs out of crop surpluses from local farmers.

"Sa pamamagitan nito, walang matatapong pagkain,” Rick Torres a volunteer of SOS said, as try to ensure the safety of their recipients.

Rise against Hunger, another NGO even highlighted how vital these actions are to starving Filipinos in the long run. Hence, continuous support from the government and even private sectors is a must.

On the other hand, to resolve the issue of plate waste, Senate Bill 240, commonly known as Zero Food Waste act of 2022 was passed as a law to ensure that there will be no waste of food on plates of Filipinos --as it would mean a lot for those families who experience hunger.

Winning alone from a seemingly hard to win game would not be possible, and betting with just oneself is quite a huge challenge to face. Hence, the bet of starving Filipinos, must not solely depend on them alone, but rather a game the whole country --or globe must win for.

The landscape of communication has undergone significant changes and improvements today. Perhaps it's also brought about by the ongoing modernization spurred by technological advancements. A testament to this is the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of communication and even commerce in the country.

According to Alyssa Schroer, a prominent researcher in the field, artificial intelligence, or AI, represents a cluster of computer languages aimed at developing the ability to perform or mimic the cognitive functions of a normal person. This includes tasks such as recognizing human language, analyzing its nuances, and even providing appropriate responses to detected signals, all with the aim of simulating or approximating the thinking process of a real individual.

Among the many manifestations of AI, the chatterbot, more commonly referred to as a chatbot, stands out as a prime example. This technology utilizes sophisticated algorithms to process and understand human language, enabling it to provide contextually relevant responses to the messages it receives.

The impact of this modern innovation is palpable across various applications, ranging from intelligent thermostats

that optimize energy consumption to smart kitchen appliances that streamline culinary processes. Furthermore, virtual assistants integrated into numerous websites and webpages cater to consumers' needs, including those who may be less experienced or familiar with digital interfaces.

The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has been at the forefront of showcasing the capabilities of chatbots, highlighting their significant contribution to the rapid gathering and dissemination of information. This has undoubtedly led to a more convenient and efficient way of life for many individuals.

Even ChatGPT, one of the most widely recognized chatbots today, exemplifies this trend. With its advanced language processing capabilities, ChatGPT can generate texts that closely resemble human communication, often indistinguishable from those

produced by actual individuals. Consequently, there is growing concern about the potential for AI to replace humans in various roles, including that of writers and content creators.

However, despite the remarkable advancements in AI technology, the human touch remains irreplaceable. While AI-driven systems offer unparalleled efficiency and convenience, they often lack the depth of understanding and emotional resonance that human interaction provides. As such, the coexistence of AI and human intelligence is likely to define the future landscape of communication and commerce, offering a harmonious blend of technological prowess and human ingenuity.

GYM ROUTINE, a hit with Teens

Itcannot be denied that improving one's physique has become one of the most popular activities and pastimes in today's society. In fact, more and more young people are developing an interest in properly conditioning their bodies.

Among them are students from Talipan National High School, such as John Mark Solitario, Kyle Vincent Marciano, Ashley Joice Rodriguez, and Keith Glorioso, all eighteen years old and in the twelfth grade. They are just a few of the many teenagers who head to the gym on a weekly basis to engage in weightlifting. Each of them aims to either lose weight or increase muscle mass.

"I enjoy going to the gym because it's also for my own benefit. I used to get sick often, but since I started going to the gym, I feel stronger, and my health has improved," said Solitario.

While it may seem unusual to see high schoolers in the gym, early weightlifting is actually a positive step based on numerous studies. However, according to John Bernard Veranga, a gym coach from Powerups Gym and Fitness Center, teenagers who lift weights should also understand the limitations of their routines to avoid any potential harm.

"Gym routines for teenagers are often based on age brackets. Usually, those aged 13-18 fall within one bracket, while those 19 and above constitute another. Those in the younger bracket can start with weights as light as 100 pounds or even higher," explained Veranga.

For teenagers, dedicating one to two hours daily to weightlifting is considered sufficient. Some routines they can incorporate include circuit training exercises such as bench presses for the chest, squats and lunges for the legs, and rows and lat pull-downs for the back, using bars with weights ranging from 10 to 15 pounds initially.

"Progressive resistance training is key, starting with lighter weights and gradually increasing the load to effectively condition the body," Veranga emphasized.

Circuit training proves effective in gradually awakening dormant muscles in the body. As days pass, teens may gradually increase the weight they lift, albeit experiencing some muscle soreness as the connective tissue fibers or ligaments connecting bones and tendons are stressed.

Furthermore, some teenagers may demonstrate the capacity to lift heavier weights than conventional bars for their age group, contingent upon factors such as body size, strength, and athletic prowess.

However, a word of caution to those eager to rush into weightlifting: mishaps stemming from improper calibration of capability and gym equipment weight and routines should not be taken lightly. Incorrect lifting techniques may lead to improper muscle development or, worse, injuries like sprains in the wrists and knees.

In addition to weightlifting, gym experts advocate for a balanced approach, including proper dietary habits and adequate rest to optimize physique development. Consistent workouts under the guidance of a trained professional, both within the gym and at home, are paramount in ensuring long-term fitness success for teenage enthusiasts.

REVISITING THE ELEVATING TREND OF HIV CASES IN THE PHILIPPINES

Howso we greet an old friend? With a simple “hi!”, a fist bump? Or a classic high five? Simple gestures of reminiscing the old times, or somehow a start of something new. Yet, how should we welcome an uninvited guest --something that keeps on knocking at a high pace wanting to barge inside.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been a threat to a huge number of Filipinos since then. It seems to be a never ending battle for some, a a dead end for many. For the past decade, this issue became dormant --and is something that is rarely come before the local’s door. However, the onset of COVID-199 became a turning point for its return --hence showing continuous increasing trend of HIV recorded cases in the past quarter of the current year.

According to Department of Health (DOH), since January , 1,454 active cases of the aforementioned virus were detected; of which 1,383 were male. Showing an almost 203 percent increase for the last eight years.

“We need to break the infection chain,” Dr. Vinn Pagtakhan of Love Yourself Inc. Highlighted in his talk about HIV.

SAYING HI

With almost 1,500 recorded cases this year--the alarming point would be the age range. According to DOH, out of this count 79 were of ages 10-19. Consequently, representing 80 percent of the whole record on brackets 15-24. Thus, depicting the invasive spread of HIV among the younger generation.

According to Dr. Helen Tan -- The Governor of the Province of Quezon -- in the Quezon Teachers Convention “In my time as the Governor, One of my main goals is to lessen the numbers of HIV in our province”

“We should be really alarmed, it is not gonna be easy for kids,” Yomi Arojado, an HIV patient of Pinoy Plus said.

Arojado, even emphasized the role of education on the onset of HIV among youths. Sex education has been tabooed for a very long time; it is not something to talk in front of dinner table --and the culture has been passed from generation to generation for several decades, Hence, being the root cause off sex education denial at present.

“’Yong implications ng unsafe sex, hindi talaga s’ya tinuturo sa bahay o eskwelahan,” Jairissale Banta, a 23 year old gay said.

“The occurrence of pandemic and its correlation to social media exposure has been pinpointed as well, restricting the mobility of people and transportation as a pull.

“Through application brought by social media, they already meet and chat, kaya nagkakaroon ng ilicit behavior ang mga bata,” USec Maria Rosaria Vergeire of DOH noted

The common transmission modes of HIV as reiterated by DOH are unsafe sexual activities, contaminated needles and blood through transfusions, and mother-to-offspring infection. However, unprotected sex being the primary reason pinpointed behind escalated trend --specifically case.

Yet, the stigma remains.

“’Pag may HIV ka mamamatay ka, ‘pag may HIV ka, lahat ng tao sa paligid mo, lalayuan ka,” Poy, an HIV patient lamented.

Greeting uninvited guest doesn’t really mean saying “hello” and letting them in an instant --sometimes or better yet oftentimes shutting the door close tightly to wave goodbye would be the best waty to say “hi!”.

There can never be too much coffee, right?

Water is life, tea is lifer, but coffee…is lifest! This is a common sentiment among those who seemingly treat coffee as their go-to beverage due to its frequent brewing and sipping.

In fact, an estimated two billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide every day. In the Philippines, it has become a cultural norm for every Filipino to regularly indulge in it, even under the scorching sun. But as the saying goes, everything in excess is harmful.

Coffee contains caffeine, a component known to stimulate mood, metabolism, and mental and physical capabilities, making it a favorite among the masses to stay productive.

According to Frank He, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University, moderate coffee consumption has no direct negative effects on the body, but excessive intake is undesirable.

Based on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), adults are recommended to consume 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine, equivalent to four to five cups of coffee, while those

aged 12-18 years old are advised to limit their intake to 100mg, equivalent to one cup of coffee. Exceeding these recommendations can lead to noticeable negative effects.

Jeanette Kimszal, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDA), highlights anxiety as one of the alarming effects of excessive caffeine consumption. Excessive caffeine intake triggers the release of adrenaline, leading to anxiety, nervousness, and excessive stress.

Furthermore, excessive coffee consumption may result in insomnia, a sleeping disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or insufficient sleep, which may stem from stress and anxiety.

Another alarming effect of excessive coffee consumption is the development of rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition where damaged muscle fibers enter the bloodstream, leading to kidney failure and other diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While the pleasure of coffee is undeniable, moderation is key. One cup a day is fine, but excessive consumption can lead to adverse health effects in the long run.

Merene leads TNHS chess players dominating at District Meet 2023

Krisha

Merene paved the way for Talipan NHS chess players as she captured gold nabbing 4 straight wins in her game during the Pagbilao District 1 Athletic Selection Meet at Pagbilao West Elementary School, November 11, 2023.

Having a strong head start, Merene starts the game guarding the sluggish movement of her opponent that let her have the upperhand on the first game and eventually grab her first win.

Meanwhile, Merene was challenged in her second game battling against her schoolmate Arwen Lusanta who sat in the game with her smart movements but still not enough to let Merene's guard down as she secured her second win in the game.

Meeting another strong opponent, Merene faced Alexandra Magadia of Pagbilao NHS who firmly defended her pieces straight away as Merene struggled to find her way out of the game.

However, in the middle of their game Merene immediately managed to catch an opening and snatch the win from her opponent.

Keeping up her track, Merene continues her reign as she battles against Fay Plandaño of PNHS

who's very tactful with her moves and as for Merene who keeps a keen eye on every movement of her opponent marking another win on her last game.

Following her step, Arwen Lusanta settled for bronze as she bagged her first game and also battled against Magadia a tough opponent from Pagbilao NHS that came with her speedy and steady moves that challenged Lusanta but still managed to ace her battle against her opponent.

Emerging water sports, fitting for the seas of Cagbalete Island

Local and foreign kiteboarders took center stage in the ninth season of the Philippine Kiteboarding Association (PKA) Tour, showcasing the sport across the country. The event took place in January on Cagbalete Island, Mauban, Quezon.

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is a water sport that combines elements from six extreme sports: wakeboarding, surfing, windsurfing, snowboarding, paragliding, and skateboarding. Tethered to a large hand-controlled kite flown by the wind, a kiteboarder utilizes a board resembling a mix of a snowboard, wakeboard, and skateboard to soar through the air and glide over the water.

Unlike other water sailing sports, kiteboarding only requires moderate wind strength. Kiteboarders navigate through what they call an 'imaginary window.'

The sport originated in the late 1970s and 1980s and is currently gaining popularity in the Philippines, spearheaded by the PKA, which organizes kiteboarding tours in various locations nationwide, including the recent edition in Quezon province.

"It's attractive to watch, but it seems like athletes need

professional training to engage in this kind of game," said Joshua Repil, a college student from Mauban.

Due to the rapid growth of kiteboarding, it now has various divisions such as wave riding, freestyle, slalom/course, speed, big air, wake park riding, kite buggying, and kite landboarding. Like other sports, it has gained popularity for its tricks and maneuvers used in competitions.

The PKA Tour also introduced various types of kites, including C-Kite, Bow Kite, Delta Kite, and Hybrid Kite, perfect for different types of boards such as twin-tip boards, wake-style boards, race boards, wave boards, and foil boards.

While kiteboarding may not be easy to dive into, it is essential to gradually introduce it, especially in Quezon province, known for its abundant seas and coastal areas perfectly suited for the exciting sport of kiteboarding.
