5 MUST-SEE FESTIVITIES OF STREET FURNITURE
With so much to see at the 2016 International Festival of Landscape Architecture, here are our recommendations for a street furniture experience.
1. FLOWER CHAIRS Designed by former UNSW student Joshua Flowers, three Flower Chair prototypes will feature on the lawn of the National Gallery of Australia during the conference. Venture out from Gandell Hall in session breaks to test this variation on the movable seat: chairs that swivel to your preferred viewpoint.
With a design originally inspired by Google office furniture, the seat aims to give people a reason to stop and become involved in public space. WINÂ $200 worth of flowers from Interflora for someone you love. Post a selfie with a Flower Chair to facebook.com/streetfurniture for your chance to win. Winner will be announced shortly after the festival.
2.  #BACKYARDEXPERIMENT AT GAREMA PLACE Inspired by the research of William Whyte, #BackyardExperiment uses time-lapse video to observe how people interact with public space, and movable seats. Visit Garema Place to experience this community-built pop-up park in person, survey the 60 movable seats and form some hypotheses about how the space will perform over its 8-day installation.
The time-lapse film will be made available shortly after the festival, showing how many people visited the park, how they interacted with seats and how they really do behave in public space. Built by the community for the community, enjoy free wifi, interactive street art, free wifi, plenty of movable seats, a pop-up library, pavers painted by local art students and trees decorated by yarn bombers.
The park is designed by Context and furnished by Street Furniture Australia, with support from AILA and In The City Canberra.
3. BATLOW CIDER FOUNTAIN Possibly the world’s first cider drinking fountain will flow two nights of the festival: October 27 at the National Arboretum for the 2016 AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards, and October 28 at the Garden of Australian Dreams in the National Museum for the Official Festival Party.Delicious cloudy apple cider has been donated in kind by Batlow Cider, and will be available on tap from our Arqua Drinking Fountain.
4. AILA FELLOWS LUNCH An opportunity for AILA Fellows to connect at the National Gallery of Australia’s Sculpture Garden on October 29, featuring an all-female speaker line-up led by new AILA board member Linda Corkery FAILA. Graduate and AILA Fresh NSW Chair Brinlee Pickering will be in conversation with Jacinta McCann, FAILA, FASLA, LEED AP and Executive Vice President of AECOM.
Based in San Francisco, Jacinta leads AECOM’s design, planning and economic practices globally. She was honoured in 2014 by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the 100 most influential business women in the Bay Area. Proudly sponsored by Street Furniture Australia and WE-EF LIGHTING.
5. CONSTITUTION AVENUE REDEVELOPMENT BY NIGHT Jane Irwin Landscape Architects and Integral Lighting present a tour of the new grand boulevard on the night of October 29. Hill Thalis partnered with Street Furniture Australia to design a suite of custom benches, seats, tables, bin enclosures and drinking fountains especially for Constitution Avenue, featuring touches of brass. Chris Goris, National Sales Manager with Street Furniture Australia, will join the tour to speak about the design process.
The night showcases LED lighting with WE-EF luminaires illuminating the avenue and the Australian flag on City Hill, concluding at the beautifully lit #BackyardExperiment in Garema Place.A pop-up park by landscape architecture firm Context and Street Furniture Australia, #BackyardExperiment transforms the plaza for the Festival.
