THE MONDO, PENRITH
A custom furniture suite brings light and life to a renewed outdoor space at The Mondo, the gateway between a popular Penrith shopping centre and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.
Landscape Architect Oculus collaborated with Street Furniture Australia on a series of five seats, in 10 different iterations, for Penrith City Council.
The seats feature spotted gum battens and are mounted on concrete plinths. Some have LED lighting strips for downlighting, and one tabletop includes a chessboard.
Street Furniture Australia worked closely with Penrith City Council and Oculus to develop ideas suitable for manufacture.
In an early concept some seat backings were imagined as laser-cut steel, with Pic-Perf patterns outlining images of local scenes.
On testing this concept and finding that the Pic-Perf would only work with larger panels, the team proposed printing the images onto vinyl, with LED flexible strips to provide backlight.
The finished panels, which feature an opal coloured substrate to diffuse the light, allow the photos to shine day and night.
The Street Furniture Australia team also tested and developed solutions for wiring each concrete plinth, with the careful positioning of voids, to ensure the product matched the designer’s and Council’s high expectations. Frame Bin Enclosures, with geometric perforations, were included in the project.
