Kwanzaa is a holiday that many Americans may not know much about, but all can share in the beauty of the principles. It’s a celebration of African heritage and unity. Dates- Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 through January 1st. History- Maulana Karenga established it as a holiday in 1966, that honors African heritage family, community, and culture. Its name is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. Swahili is the most widely spoken African language, and was chosen as the language of Kwanzaa’s principles. The origin of Kwanzaa lies in the 1960s civil rights and Black freedom movements, and is a way of remembering the African heritage of Black Americans whose ethic history was stripped away by the slave trade. “Kwanzaa was created to reaffirm and restore our rootedness in African culture” according to Karenga. It ia a cultural rather than religious holiday, and can be celebrated regardless of a person’s faith tradition. “First fruits” celebrations date back to ancient Egypt and Nubia, and commemorate the harvest. Colors- The colors black, red, and green are part of Kwanzaa celebrations due to their special significance. Black represents the people, red is for the Sev en uniting Principles History blood all those withGallery African FAQ ancestry, as well as the blood shed during slavery and the civil rights movement, and green is for the lush land of Africa. These colors also reflect the Pan-African movement itself.

The Seven Principles The Seven Principles

Kwanzaa is an African-American and Pan-African cultural holiday that is centered around seven principles (called Nguzo Saba in Swahili). They are:

Umoja (Unity) Umoja (OO-MO-JAH) Unity stresses the importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying, "I am We," or "I am because We are."

Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) Kujichagulia (KOO-GEE-CHA-GOO-LEE-Y AH) Self-Determination requires that we define our common interests and make decisions that are in the best interest of our family and community.

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) Ujima (OO-GEE-MAH) Collective Work and Responsibility reminds us of our obligation to the past, present and future, and that we have a role to play in the community, society, and world. Seven Candles for Kwanzaa by Andrea Davis Pinkney

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) Ujamaa (OO-JAH-MAH) Cooperative economics emphasizes our collective economic strength and encourages us to meet common needs through mutual support.

Nia (Purpose) Nia (NEE-YAH) Purpose encourages us to look within ourselves and to set personal goals that are beneficial to the community.

Kuumba (Creativity) Kuumba (KOO-OOM-BAH) Creativity makes use of our creative energies to build and maintain a strong and vibrant community.

Imani (Faith) Imani (EE-MAH-NEE) Faith focuses on honoring the best of our traditions, draws upon the best in ourselves, and helps us strive for a higher level of life for humankind, by affirming our self-worth and confidence in our ability to succeed and triumph in righteous struggle.

Taking on too much, or too little, debt. Not all debt is bad. It can enable you to return to school, buy much-needed professional outfits before receiving your first paycheck, or even cover your rent during a tough month. Being so afraid of debt that you avoid it altogether can force you to miss out on opportunities, while taking on too much can lead to financial ruin.

Chicago—October 23, 2013—Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announced today casting for William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by CST Artistic Director Barbara Gaines. Embraced by audiences as one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, The Merry Wives of Windsor is an energetic romp with the lovable rogue Sir John Falstaff, performed by Scott Jaeck, as he charms and conspires against the townspeople of Windsor, only to be outsmarted by Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, performed by Kelli Fox and Heidi Kettenring. Chicago Shakespeare’s production will transport audiences to post-war England in the late 1940s with a soundtrack of spirited dance music. The Merry Wives of Windsor will run in CST’s Courtyard Theater December 3, 2013 through January 19, 2014. Considered the first “situation comedy,” this high-energy caper marks the return of Shakespeare’s memorable, larger-than-life character, Sir John Falstaff, in this lighthearted follow-up to his popular incarnation in Henry IV. Now Sir John is hard up for money and seeks to repair his depleted fortunes by wooing the two most prominent women in town. But Falstaff’s plans go awry as the Windsor wives see through his intrigues and dupe him repeatedly. Setting the production during the holiday season of the period, director Barbara Gaines enthuses, “I love the music and the dancing of the 40s. There is something so undeniably hopeful about the songs

STORY HIGHLIGHTS Simple changes in everyday behavior can honor Mandela's legacy Forgiveness, compassion, humor used by many notable w orld leaders Expert w arns against using Mandela examples as solution for all problems

(CNN) -- As the world says goodbye to Nelson Mandela, the task of ensuring his legacy becomes the world's responsibility. His life has been described as an evolution from militant freedom fighter, to prisoner, to unifying figure and eventual elder statesman - in the process winning the hearts and minds of world leaders and average citizens alike. In his 95 years he accomplished what many thought impossible. Held prisoner for 27 years and later becoming South Africa's first democratically elected president, he practiced reflection, negotiation and incredible stubbornness. His capacity for forgiveness and reconciliation made him one of the most remarkable and respected individuals of modern times. Whether it's battling racism, offering a helping hand or long-overdue forgiveness, here are several practical suggestions to keep Mandela's legacy alive. Make the best of your current situation

Long Road to Freedom, a Tribute to Nelson Mandela

I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.

TROY CARTER: FIRED BY LADY GAGA AND LOVING IT HE HELPED DISCOVER AND CULTIVATE THE MEGASTAR FOR ALMOST SEVEN YEARS. THEN GAGA DUMPED HIM. HERE'S THE UNTOLD STORY OF HOW HE ROLLED WITH IT.

BY DANIELLE SACKS From behind, Troy Carter looks like a middle schooler. He has the wispy frame of a pretzel stick, wrapped in skinny jeans that bottom out at black Yves Saint Laurent high-tops. It is late November, exactly two weeks after he was fired by Lady Gaga, but by appearances he and his calendar show no signs of vulnerability. He is a man without breaks: He spent the morning fueled on the fumes of a banana, meeting with execs at his new soda company and then with tech founders he's investing with; after that it was off to a lunch meeting with CAA, and now he's at the Capitol Records tower in Hollywood. It's the schedule of anyone of his caliber, though it's also--and he won't admit this--the habit of a recently dumped man who's probably afraid to have time alone with himself. As Carter walks by a sprawling glass-encased office on the top floor, Capitol's chairman waves him in and embraces him. Carter has been getting a lot of hugs lately, from musicians, managers, lawyers, VCs, entr epreneurs, CMOs, and even his old pals from Philly. It's always the same: an energetic wrap of arms, neither broish nor sensitive. In Carter's line of work, confidants and colleagues tend to be one and the same.

By Toni Guagenti Virginian-Pilot correspondent Š September 15, 2013

CHESAPEAKE As the aunt of Frank Spadea's wife entered her mid-80s, the Spadeas started to research ways to make their aunt's home fit the needs of two generations - the aunt and Spadea's stepson, who was going to move in to help her. 1 OF 9 PHOTOS: The gen-flex apartment, left, can be entered from the outside as well as inside the home. They talked about dividing the house so that each person living in the Birdneck home in Virginia Beach would have his or her comfort and privacy. While that idea didn't come to fruition, it provided the backdrop for Spadea to change the way he would build homes for his company, Franciscus Homes. Taking the lead from nationwide builder Lennar Corp., headquartered in Miami, and a home it sells called "Next Gen," Spadea got to work with architects to come up with Franciscus' own version that fits the way more Americans are living today. According to the AARP, in 2008, 5.3 percent of all households, or 6.2 million, were filled with multiple generations of families. That number rose to 7.1 million households by 2010, or 6.1 percent of all households a growth rate faster than the previous eight years combined. For Americans, it's a return to the past in a lot of ways.

family homes became the norm.

According to a recent Pew Research Center report, at the turn of the 20th century, 57 percent of Americans 65 years of age or older lived in homes with their children, grandchildren or other family members. The numbers steadily declined after World War II, when small, single-

In a recent story on "NBC Nightly News," Dr. Nancy Snyderman reported that Lennar's Next Gen houses "are houses with complete smaller homes attached, designed for privacy, and built to evolve with a family." For many area builders, buyers are thinking more long-term when it comes to purchasing a home, one that provides them flexibility when it comes to aging in place, taking in an aging parent or relative, or welcoming back a child who has graduated from college and needs a little help before venturing out on his or her own. "I think people are thinking of a home with a longer-term commitment in mind than they ever have," said Steve Lawson, president of The Lawson Cos. and president of the Tidewater Builders Association. Editorial Reviews

About the Author It was during his time at Northeastern, about '86-'87, that Idreez heard Harold Washington speak to the students during his run for re-election as mayor. Idreez found himself captivated by the political nature of Washington's words and how well he spoke English. This experience is what motivated Idreez to switch from continuing his education in accounting to political science. Although Idreez imagined himself as a well-to-do politician, it was this academic path that steered his love towards writing through the work he put into his thesis. He fell in love with the craft of writing and followed his heart forward from there. Idreez is a smartly dressed man, who chuckles easily and speaks pointedly about what he believes in. He was involved with the production of two papers post-college: The African Voice and Afrik. He also took a job at The Celebrity International magazine. Although he enjoyed freelancing for these publications, he hoped that instead of writing for other people he could begin his own publication, and one day would. Idreez's family in Nigeria used to tease him about wanting to be a journalist, because his English has never been very good. People also told him he would make more money pursuing a career in accounting. But Idreez had his mind set on being a writer- nothing else. He compares this experience to a Bible passage that says a prophet is not without honor except in his own house or hometown. Although initially his family didn't agree with his decision, they've not only grown to support him- but also write him letters requesting that Idreez write letters to the government of their state in Nigeria, and focus more of his work on African happenings. Idreez says he just laughs. "Whatever you do in life, if you persevere- then people have no choice to see that and respect what you're doing."

Reviews and Awards "This is a refreshing new book that steps back from the usual debates about appropriate agricultural policies and programme interventions for redressing Africa's pressing poverty and food security needs, to take a longer-term view of the kinds of science-based interventions that are needed to launch Africa's agricultural sector on a structurally different trajectory...Calestous Juma develops a compelling vision of how knowledge and innovation systems that bring together the best of modern science and local knowledge could...lead to agricultural growth clusters that would drive national and regional economic growth across Africa."--INternational Affairs "[Calestous Juma's] optimism is refreshing--a welcome antidote to the pessimistic view of African development of previous decades." --Nature "A remarkably optimistic outlook for agriculture in Africa...Juma's account succeeds in offering a glimpse of the possible. The book provides a welcome relief from the gloom and despair in popular narratives about African agriculture."--Science "My husband [Lloyd Timberlake, author of Africa in Crisis] came into the house yesterday, tossed me [this] book and said: 'You and your staff should read this book from beginning to end. Every single page. It is all you need to know to do your job.' I have never heard him sound like that about any book!"--Susan Sechler, Managing Director, TransFarm Africa "Calestous Juma of Harvard University, has produced a book of evidence-based recommendations for transforming African food production. As Professor of the Practice of International Development and Director of the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project at Harvard, he recognises the shortcomings of the past, particularly the lack of political and, consequently, financial commitment to agriculture, but he also instances the recent changes in political and investment emphasis that could provide foundation for a new and more fruitful era."--New Agriculturist "Calestous Juma draws on a rich harvest of research to write a convincing analysis of the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in the agricultural sectors of Africa. Hopefully, it will be widely read by scholars and policy analysts across Africa as well as outside. It is a great book."--Elinor Ostrom, Professor of Political Science, Indiana University, and 2009 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences "Calestous Juma has once again produced a book that will be an important reference for scholars, researchers and practitioners in their search for ways to break the persistent conundrum that is Africa's failure to properly exploit its huge agricultural potential. The book reveals his exceptional ability to express ideas that will be relevant to the emerging trends in Africa's agricultural and political economy."--Monty Jones, Executive Director, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, and 2004 World Food Prize Laureate "This book presents a timely analysis of the importance of infrastructure in improving Africa's agriculture. Leaders at national and state levels will benefit immensely from its evidence-based recommendations."--Goodluck Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria "This book is a forceful reminder of the important role that African women play in agriculture on the continent. It is critical that they are provided with equal educational
