STIG LENNART ANDERSSON Internship 2010 I worked for SLA as a full-time intern. This was during my third year of the Bachelor Urban Design. I made an effort in several competition entries: One of them was a planning competition about Ballerup Center, Denmark. For this competitions I made models, diagrams and plans, collages, 3D visuals, I did research and participated at meetings. I also did a project in a detail design phase for Tivoli Conference Center, Copenhagen. I designed gobo lights, made a light plan and helped with the technical drawings.

BALLERUP MIDT 2010 The task in Ballerup Midt is to rethink the suburbs, and enhance the experience of the city center and lay the foundations for a development where the health of humans and an active city life is the center. Team SLA response has been to condense both the city landscape, experience and functionally basis for a new suburban typology. It is a rethinking of the suburban space, a kind of “suburb 2.0” SLA sees the city as a part of nature’s ecosystem and reversed nature as an integral part of the city. SLA uses this as a planning tool showed in the proposal. There has been an active process involving the town’s citizens, including three workshops where they were briefed on the status of projects and was able to comment on this and engage in dialogue with team members.

KARRES EN BRANDS Internship 2011 / 2012 I did my internship at Karres and Brands Landscape Architects as a practical part for my Master at the Academy of Architecture. During my ten months at Karres and Brands i got see and work on many different projects. I worked as an assistant designer on strategies, visions, urban masterplans, landscape projects and public spaces. But I also got to experience all aspects of an office; for example things like acquisitions and money matters.

VU CAMPUS ROOFGARDEN 2011 The Free University of Amsterdam choses for an ambitious development in the Zuidas: the so called Kenniskwartier. The VU wants to be an international high qualified university with bachelor and master degrees. This all has to be in the middle of a lively city campus with urban dynamics. A functional mix is essential for this plan: studying, working, relaxation en living are going to make the Kenniskwartier a lively part of the Zuidas. In this project there is a distinction between a vision for the public space of the Amsterdam Kenniskwartier and a strategie for de public space of the VU Campus. The vision is not about beautiful squares and building, it’s about humans, human activities and encounters. The VU area does not transform at ones. It’s an development in a period of 30 years. During the process new buildings will rise and the public space (campus square) will shift it’s current position. elements. The campus square has to be flexibel and be able to grow in fases with elements that are easy to add. An important aspect is the coherence between the elements. During this project I was fully involved in every aspect.

KLEIN CORPUS 2012 Klein corpus is a complex in Groningen that will have a new high-rise buildings. On the ground floor of this complex there will be a multifunctional center with a child day care and housing. This area is going to be a place for different users and the surrounding inhabitants. During the project I had a great share in designing the public space. I made different sketches and got the necessary feedback from my projectleader. Many elements of these sketches are to been seen in the final design.

CAMPUS OSNABRÜCK 2013 / 2015 During a workshop five teams worked on the future perspective of the faculty Agrarwissenschaften und Landschaftsarchitektur. Döll Architects and Bureau B+B won this workshop and were allowed to make the vision for the campus. The concept is based on Lerngut, which means educational estate. This proposition is different unlike other traditional campus models. The estate nests in the countryside and absorbs the qualities and strengthens them. The jury called the plan “an intelligent contribution’’. With few resources and appropriate interventions the power of a vast green campus will be gained and strengthened. In this vision secondary schools are connected with the agricultural landscape. This contributes to the corporate identity of the Osnabrück faculty AgrarWissenschaften und Landschaftsarchitektur. It will make Lerngut Haste a future-proof campus university with a new identity. For students, scholars, and visitors an attractive area with identifiable areas arises. Lerngut Haste gets a new network of informal pathways. These pathways are linked to the existing road structure, so they can contribute to a lively and recreational area.
05 30
Nowadays the identity and character of Lerngut Haste is being affected by a two-part classification. North and South separates the campus area. A clear identity is missing and thereby not recognizable for the outer world. The structure of the landscape will become easier to read when you see area as a vertebrae in a spine.

The Aa River slices through the former textile industry area. Despite its central location, the local inhabitants hardly know the area. Chimneys, the roofs of sheds, old walls and solid industrial buildings mark the river. The colours are beautiful! Yellow autumn leaves of the swamp cypress and the overhanging willows. The brown-red bricks and roof tiles. The old rust-red railway bridge. The mouldy green of the steel embankments along the orange-red paths. The trunks of the birches. The starting point was to retain the character, scale of the buildings, the architecture and the overgrowth. They remain the elements that visually determine the area. The industrial oasis, the area’s sheltered, intimate atmosphere is will be preserved and be made accessible at the same time; the narrow little streets between the factory complexes, the walls alongside, the wild overgrowth, the patterns in different pavement surfaces, the large gateways and underpasses. This inventory of relics, together with the Aa, form the starting point for the area’s transformation. Five bridges will follow on from the little streets to connect the two river banks. They will accompanied by paths, lanes and tracks to make the terrain accessible and connect the centre of Bocholt with
06 35
36
Lake Aa and the neighbourhoods around the plan area to each other. The structure of vegetation in the middle of the plan area will get more space and a better connection to Lake Aa. It will have an unrestricted, natural character that slowly creeps into the area from Lake Aa and eventually connects to the closed structure of vegetation along the Boggeter Promenade. The intended site is so large that it cannot be developed only by a fine urban plan. In the first place, the area needs to be rediscovered by the inhabitants of Bocholt. They need to start looking at the area in a new way, as quickly as possible; bicycling through the area or going to a flea market or exhibition being held there. The ruggedness of the area and its history should be discovered, in all its glory and inconveniences. Therefore relatively inexpensive investments will be made to make the area better connected and accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. A change of identity will be introduced by opening up the existing buildings for temporary events. Eventually a slow transformation with a new programme will follow.

vienna austria shared space public space furniture details
MARIAHILFER STRASSE 2013 / 2015 In August 2015 the longest shared space of Europe, the Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna, was offcially opened. The redevelopment of the 1.6 kilometer long street took eleven months start to finish. In those months the street was made more pedestrian friendly by closing off the biggest part for car traffic. A new pedestrian zone forms the new heart of the street. Back in 2012 Bureau B+B and orso.pitro won the international design competition for the redevelopment of this long shopping street with their proposal for a light, granite paved shared space. The design aims to provide maximum space for pedestrians and cyclists but which at the same modestly gives way to bus and local traffic. The design focuses on the development of a space which truly is public: a stage for urban life. Seating and meeting areas are no longer exclusively found in the form of terraces, but also around the specially designed modular furniture, visitors have the opportunity to meet without having to order something. By now ‘konsumfreie Räume’ has become a common term in Vienna. In the execution phase the Mariahilfer Strasse was paved from façade to façade in a one level pavement, including very subtle guiding lines for the different user groups. This way the
07 46
street became a mixed zone in which everyone intuitively had their own space. Several clusters of modular furniture now provide areas for meeting, and several water mirrors connect the various spaces. The furniture was designed in such a manner that the different elements can be placed close to one another, creating sheltered areas in the street. The pavement and the different modules are made from Austrian granite and the furniture’s seating of Cumaru wood. Colourful trees are placed in large planters, adding an extra layer to the existing high-crowned trees, giving the street a more intimate character. The newly developed meeting areas create peace in the busy shopping street. A relaxed atmosphere was created in which visitors can both shop as well as take a good rest after a busy day.

DORPSSTRAAT HARMELEN 2014 / 2016
07 - Mariahilfer strasse
The municipality of Woerden is going to restructure the main street of Harmelen. The reason for this construction is the new ring road around Harmelen. This Western and Southern ring road will take away the burden of passing traffic in the centre of Harmlen. This situation offers an opportunity to give more attention in the redesign and improve the situation for cyclists and pedestrians and the quality of life in the village. The main street of Harmelen is important for the structure of the village and runs parallel with the river Leidse Rijn and the a old towpath. Bureau B+B sees these three together as ribbons. In the redevelopment of the Dorpsstraat we also see the importance of the adjacent squares, they are the connecting factor. These three ribbons played an important role in the history of the village and this where Harmelen derives its identity from. By cross linking the three ribbons with each other, a “braided ribbon is formed with a rich system of routes and places. The squares are thereby the connecting factor. The public space of the Harmelen becomes a ribbon with different links. In other words, a route with several squares and places. This route will get a smooth shape with no sharp angles.

STOLBERG GERMANY 2015 Nestled among the woods, beyond the railway tracks, the park areas and gardens of the hill of the Vichttals lies the Bastinsweiher and heart of the city. By redesigning this central location as a crossroad between urban and landscape, the potential for recreational use can be strengthened. 08 - Dorpsstraat harmelen
The free space of Bastinsweihers is an important connecting factor for Vichtenstein. The design attracts users from the main street to the waterfront and up the passage of Vicht that is located at the foot of TalanhĂśhe. From here, alternative routes connect with the hill and the Old town. The project area is located between the two poles of the city. The historic Old Town and the shopping area around the SalmstraĂ&#x;e. The redesign as through city street and a versatile motion and lounge gets this intermediate region its own character. The road connects the different spaces together like pearls on a chain. The clear division of the road space is plenty of space for pedestrians and urban life. The wide sidewalk along the shops and restaurants can be flexibly used for terraces, trees and plants, bicycle stands, parking, furnishing and playground objects.

central station furniture detailing public space
ARNHEM CENTRAAL 2014 / 2016 In Arnhem, a small but complex piece of the urban fabric is undergoing a revamping: the station area. The mid-point of the project is formed by the station’s transfer hall, which provides direct access to trains, taxis, buses, bicycles, parked cars, offices and the city itself. Safety and crowd handling for 65,000 travellers daily is priority number one. The city’s characteristic naturally rolling landscape was used to bring together all of these transport networks. The differences in elevation, some as great as 20 m, were employed to develop the station area into an urban landscape that assimilates facilities and brings them together within its folds. As in many of the firm’s projects from this period, the public area, which comprises various component areas, is conceived of as a single continuous and coherent street level, executed both indoors and outdoors in natural stone. The impression is not one of precisely delineated spaces, but of ambiances or spots. These spots are formed by the programmes on which they border, and given such additions as a large tree on the town balcony, or special lamp posts on the tram/bus square. Seating elements emerge from the street level and are executed in the same natural stone. All additional elements, such as
10 68
railings and water drainage pipes, are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel numbers in the pavement subtly indicate the area’s different elevations. In cooperation with Atelier LEK, a special lighting concept was devised, resulting in a specific lighting effect for each individual spot. A central aspect of the entire concept is the connection between public lighting and the architectural lighting of the buildings.
