Changing Tides

THIS GENERATION IS IN an era of bold reinventions and inspired reboots. Timeless films are given new life with fresh narratives, and classic songs are re-created with modern perspectives and innovations. The same can be said of this legendary property. Approaching its centennial, The Boca Raton has undergone its own evolutions—each one guided by a passion for redefining perfection.

Perhaps our latest reboot—that of Beach Club—is the one filled with the most discovery and wonder. This winter, we opened our doors to the reimagined Beach Club, a $130 million investment into a coastal destination set along our private golden beach. Here, we toast to the finer parts of life on the sand, where the waves crash against the shore as Club members

and guests enjoy immersive experiences. A fresh new design and a bounty of programming evokes a sense of untapped joie de vivre, inviting them to explore, delight, and simply exist in the moment.

We are excited to showcase all-new dining options at Beach Club. We start by re-introducing our beloved Marisol restaurant, this time in a new location that merges indoor dining with outdoor options. Our team has also tapped the talents of Chef Johnny Spero, who helms the Michelin-starred Reverie in Washington, D.C., as a Marisol partner. Taste his ceviche on the menu, and you’ll understand exactly why Chef Spero was the right choice for us to continue evolving our menu as a collaboration with Marisol’s talented culinary team, overseen by Chef de Cuisine Sami Bourmeche. Read more about Beach Club’s dining options, which include the new Onda restaurant and its seasonal guest chef appearances, on page 48.

As we look to the future with the new Beach Club, we also pay homage to the past by looking at The Boca Raton’s prolific place in history. For nearly a century, our property has served as a playground for royalty, dignitaries, prominent families, and more. Historian and author Susan Gillis gives us a glimpse of some of the more remarkable stories that—if these walls could talk— show how special The Boca Raton has been to notable figures and their families all around the world.

This past season we have also witnessed an exciting event that’s been years in the making. The Boca Raton hosted Artisans of Wine & Food, a multi-day event that showcased the best in wine and cuisine. We partnered with the esteemed Napa Valley Vintners to feature a weekend filled with more than 75 winemakers, celebrated chefs, and immersive programming for a celebration of fine wine and food that no doubt will become a coveted annual tradition. And the best part? Proceeds from the Artisans of Wine & Food gala benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and Napa Valley.

This season is filled with high spirits and endless fun. We hope you enjoy every moment at The Boca Raton, and are grateful that you choose to spend your days and nights with us. We look forward to welcoming you back this season and beyond!

A SPECIAL SPARKLE

There’s always a reason to celebrate at Champagne Harbor. Our new al fresco space is the perfect setting to sip on a curated menu of Moët & Chandon Ice Champagne Cocktails, the first and only Champagne created to be enjoyed over ice. Aptly named Champagne Harbor as a toast to its waterside setting, this picturesque lawn is an ideal spot to admire the passing yachts on Lake Boca Raton or meander before taking our Water Taxi to Beach Club— with Champagne in hand.

ALL ABOARD

Cruise in style around Beach Club on Sorbetto, our new floating Fiat 500. This limitededition offshore car brings a playful twist to the waterways while showcasing the iconic design and impeccable Italian craftsmanship that’s signature to the Fiat brand. In the afternoon, Beach Club guests are invited to enjoy complimentary short excursions along the Intracoastal to Lake Boca Raton. In the mornings, Sorbetto reservations are available for members of The Boca Raton Club and resort guests. With room for three and a dedicated captain, Sorbetto is your stylish way to set sail.

LEVEL UP

Designed for independent-minded teens and pre-teens, Game Loft at Beach Club is an immersive indoor space loaded with the latest consoles and video games, VR headsets, and low-tech games like billiards, chess, and checkers. Or, sink into one of the comfy lounge chairs for a movie with friends. Either way, it’s game on at Game Loft.

EXPLORE GALORE

A new community awaits beyond our Club doors, thanks to a special partnership with Exclusive Resorts. The Boca Raton Club members are invited to join Exclusive Resorts—an intimate, members-only vacation club—to access more than 400 luxury residences and experiences in 75 of the world’s most sought-after destinations, while taking advantage of an expert Vacation Ambassador and dedicated on-site team who takes care of every detail. The best part? The Boca Raton Club members enjoy a special discount of $20,000 off Exclusive Resorts’ initiation membership fee (minimum 10-year term). There’s no better time to stop dreaming and start living.

ALL IN THE DETAILS

Almost too beautiful to eat, Maison Rose’s lifelike chocolate handbags are the perfect gift for the fashion (and sweets!) lover. Handcrafted by The Boca Raton’s pastry team using delicious French chocolate by Valrhona, the handbag is finished with edible shimmering silver sparkles. Offered as a limited-time special during select holidays, the bag contains a fun surprise when cracked open—it’s filled with pink sugar candy.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

The Boca Raton’s commitment to reducing plastic usage kicks up a notch at Beach Club, where guests receive a reusable water bottle to enjoy during their stay and to take home. Our gift to you (and the environment), the bottle can be filled up in your guest room, where the wet bar includes a water filtration system, plus at water refill stations placed across the property. Drink up!

GOLF RANGE

“Golf can be an intimidating thing for people who’ve never done it before,” says Andrew Farrea, The Boca Raton’s Director of Golf. “You have a golf bag with 13 different numbers on t hem, and how do you know what to do with any of them?”

That daunting feeling is why Farrea and his golf team made a conscious effort to create new opportunities for those beginning the sport and those who don’t frequent the course too often. Members and guests can sign up for clinics, including specialized segments like driving and putting, no matter how much experience they have or how consistently they play. Beginners are guided with clear instructions in a relaxed and comfortable manner, while more advanced golfers are matched with pros at their level.

“We recognize that there’s such a massive difference between someone who plays once or twice a year versus someone who plays weekly,” Farrea says. “It’s important that we instruct at that level and frequency for each player to get the most out of a session.”

Court of Appeals

Racquet Club’s latest amenities, including the all-new Racquet Bar and additional pickleball courts, make both tennis and pickleball a smashing success.

WHEN IT COMES TO Racquet Club’s upgrades, the team does not dink around. Instead, they launch the revamped amenities with overhead-smash-style gusto.

Case in point? The new Racquet Bar. Primed to serve fun and excitement, the recently unveiled Racquet Bar is The Boca Raton’s latest gathering spot for those seeking energy and community within a sporty environment. Located courtside at Racquet Club, this outdoor bar invites tennis players, pickleballers, spectators, and friends to gather for pre- and p ost-match to enjoy a round (or two) of drinks and tasty snacks.

Club members and guests can experience a fun and relaxed community of athletes and their friends in this alfresco, courtside setting. Lounge in the bar’s adjacent seating area, which includes plush sofas and chairs, all shaded under a massive canopy.

Part of Racquet Club’s movement of creating a vibrant social ambience that caters to both competitive and recreational players, Racquet Bar blends pl ay, community, and refreshment in one inclusive space. The menu provides the perfect fuel to swing away with your racquet or paddle. Sip on energy drinks and refreshing beverages, or indulge in craft beers, ready-to-drink cocktails, and wines.

“It’s been so rewarding seeing our Club members and guests socialize and connect both on and off the courts,” says Lauren Levine, D irector of Racquet Sports.

Racquet Bar is joined by the reveal of new pickleball courts. Recognizing the meteoric rise of the game of pickleball, The Boca Raton r esponded by creating 12 brand-new pickleball hard courts, in addition to its 14 clay tennis courts. The additional courts follow Racquet Club’s focus on enhancing all aspects of playing, including the community that sports can build.

Players of all ages and skill levels have been known to enjoy playing the sport together, creating a multigenerational environment while still keeping the sport nuanced and challenging. Levine has also added more programming, such as advanced pickleball clinics and supervised round robins, as well as restarting the team and league play.

“We love the competition, and at the same time, we love the bonds that are being created with such a socially beneficial sport and activity,” Levine says.

Boca Chica

High Standards

For these two staff members of The Boca Raton, it’s all in the details when it comes to serving guests.

Samuel Garcia

Director of Guest and Member Experience

SAMUEL GARCIA IS PROUDEST when members and guests have no idea that he and his team have left an imprint on their stay. The way he sees it, when his team’s work is executed perfectly, there is no need to notice them. “We’re here to clear the path,” Garcia says of his department’s efforts. “We look to provide a seamless journey that supports everyone’s goals at the resort.”

That includes having resources to navigate the many offerings available to a guest, from pre-arrival outreach to itinerary bookings such as spa appointments, as we ll as connecting upon arrival with an associate to learn ways to enhance their stay. T he seasoned concierge professional comes to The Boca Raton after an extensive career in world-class hospitality, including Fisher Island Club, Rosewood Mansion at Turtle Creek, and Auberge Resorts Collection. Cherished memories include meeting a s ingle traveler who, in a casual conversation, mentioned that she had planned to t ravel to The Boca Raton with her husband of many years. The travel plans had b een made, but her husband passed away unexpectedly. With the encouragement of her loved ones, the widow made the trip on her own in tribute to her late husband. She mentioned that the couple’s favorite song was “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the Water Taxi, she sat next to another guest whose phone rang, and the ringtone was “Freebird.”

“She mentioned the magic of The Boca Raton and of that moment,” Garcia says. As a departure gift, Garcia’s team found a vinyl copy of “Freebird” and wrote notes of gratitude to her for spending such an important moment with The Boca Raton.

For Garcia, the chance to work in hospitality helped shaped his perspective because it “allowed me to create a greater empathy for human connection and how we can impact the world. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of some truly special moments in people’s lives, which often become special moments for us as well.”

Nahikari Hurtado

Sommelier at Principessa Ristorante

UNDER THE SOFT LIGHTS of The Boca Raton’s signature dining venue in collaboration with Major Food Group, Principessa Ristorante, Nahikari “Nike” Hurtado turns into a chemist. As the sommelier for the Italian restaurant known for its dynamic and comprehensive wine list, Hurtado experiments with food and wine pairings on a nightly basis. Connecting foods with wines—and vice versa—is her version of “being a little kid discovering chemistry,” she says. “The pairings can change the flavor profile. And the best part is that you can play with it—there are no rules, and it’s endless.”

When selecting wine pairings, Hurtado says it’s hard to go wrong when employing the classic oenophile phrase “what grows together, goes together.” “For example, a Chianti or a Brunello are wines that will traditionally go well with anything red sauce, pizzas, pastas, etc.,” Hurtado says. “A Barolo or Barbaresco from the northern Italian region of Piedmont pairs well with roasted meats, which is part of that area’s primary diet.”

The Spanish-born and Venezuela-raised Hurtado came to The Boca Raton on a complete whim a fter attending a career fair in support of her friend in the hospitality business. At the end of the day, Hurtado was hired, starting a career in fine dining. “For me, luxury is how you make somebody feel,” she says. “When you make somebody feel special and important, to me that’s luxury. And I want them to feel special.”

Hurtado earned her WSET Level 2 certification and passed her Court of Master Sommelier Level 1 exam. Her next career goal? Become one of the few female master sommeliers in the world. We’ll toast to that.

Elizabeth Bennett, Principal and CEO

For Certified Financial Planner ™ Elizabeth Bennett, managing money is more than a career—it’s a passion, and its roots are personal. Bennett’s father died when she was 7, and her widowed mother became so overwhelmed with financial burdens that she had declared bankruptcy by the time Elizabeth turned 18. Bennett went on to earn a B.S. in Accounting from Penn State University so that she would not fall into similar financial hardship.

Now, as head of Intercoastal Wealth Planning in Boca Raton, she shares her insights from nearly 35 years in finance with a wide range of clients, designing custom plans to steer them toward financial freedom and independence. These include widows and divorcees, soonto-be retirees, and others undergoing major life changes.

Bennett is familiar with the mistakes that amateur investors often make without the advice of a professional fiduciary— such as playing the stock market ineffectively. Bennett is an expert at reversing these habits, and excels at providing solutions for her clients during times of market volatility.

“I pride myself on building a client’s portfolio based on what their risk tolerance is,” she says. “We always start with a financial plan. I need to understand who you are and what your goals are, and where you are today, so I can help you get to where you want to go.”

Spa Palmera embraces Ayurvedic principles with its immersive abhyanga massage experience

THE ABHYANGA MASSAGE DEFIES all logic. How could a massage that’s not a traditional Swedish one relax my muscles so well? Even more, how does a non-deep-tissue massage get out all the knots in my shoulders and neck? Lastly, how does this massage detox me and circulate fluid without being a traditional lymphatic drainage treatment?

The answer I discovered after a 90-minute abhyanga treatment at Spa Palmera? It’s backed by thousands of years of wellness practices.

Part of Spa Palmera’s suite of Ayurvedic treatments found on its Wellness Collection menu, the abhyanga experience may have been new to me but not to the entire world. This specific massage is under the umbrella of Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic system originating in India 5,000 years ago. And to this day, it stands the test of time.

Ayurveda—a polysyllabic word that surprisingly rolls off the tongue easily after a few tries— is a widely practiced health discipline in India and Nepal, and it is making deep footholds in the Western Hemisphere. The goal of an Ayurvedic practitioner is to create balance and well-being using a combination of physical, psychological, and spiritual techniques. If you’re feeling a little too anxious (like me), then a specific Ayurvedic approach can bring a sense of calm in your (er, my) life. And the best part? You don’t need a prescription for it.

The earmarks of an abhyanga massage include using warm, herb-infused oil that’s selected based off your dosha—Ayurvedic jargon to describe three fundamental energy principles believed to govern the body’s functions, mind, and overall health. Each person is said to have their unique combination of the three doshas that make up their specific Ayurvedic constitution, a blueprint to achieve optimal health. And practices like the abhyanga massage target your individual dosha.

Ahead of my abhyanga massage, I spoke with two experts in the field of essential oils and Ayurvedic medicine. After hearing their perspectives after decades of practice and teaching, let’s just say my doshas were bouncing around.

“In India, this was the medicine 5,000 years ago,” says Ashish Pandya, an Ayurvedic and wellness coach. “Back then, Indians were not taking pills. Instead, they were using medicinal herbs and oils to heal the body through the skin.”

Pandya also doubles up as the Vice President of Education and Training for Shankara, the awardwinning skin care brand used in Spa Palmera’s Ayurvedic treatments. For the oils used in the abhyanga massage, Spa Palmera therapists use Shankara’s products, which include herbs that are infused with the oil for, at minimum, four days. In addition, high-vibrational sounds are played as the oils are being made and stored, which has been said to reduce stress, improve sleep, relieve pain, enhance relaxation, and promote a general sense of well-being.

“Our goal is to put positive messages and infused positive energy in our products, which will hopefully translate directly to the user,” says Gina Preziosa, Shankara’s Vice President of Sales.

When it was time for my treatment, I had a basic understanding of what to expect. But the actual, real-life experience was beyond anything words, literature and conversation with experts could have prepared me for.

After arriving 30 minutes ahead of my massage, I found a spot in Spa Palmera’s sauna, which allowed my skin’s pores to open and accept more of the essential oils that I was going to be lathered with in T-minus 30 minutes. My thera -

pist met me in the Great Hall and walked me to the treatment room. After smelling three distinct oils and selecting the one that appealed to me, it was time to experience balance and well-being.

The abhyanga massage is unlike anything I had experienced before. The massage begins with a ritual of ringing a bell three times, which promotes relaxation and energy flow. Sweeping, rhythmic strokes from an experienced massage therapist create a light friction that allows the oil to penetrate through the skin and become absorbed in the joints and tissues.

My entire body was worked over, from scalp to feet. Though the therapist follows a tried-and-true choreographed massage treatment (personalizing the pressure, rhythm, and oil based off my dosha), we were allowed moments of freestyle to work on some key areas that were definitely throwing off my dosha. My shoulders and neck were the main benefactors of this freestyle.

With each stroke, I melted into the massage table, becoming one with it as I sank deeper and deeper during my relaxed state. At the end of the 90 minutes, I felt calm and balanced. Less stressed, even.

Now that definitely defies logic.

CONNECTION AN

What happens when two world-renowned chefs join forces with Beach Club’s team of creative culinarians? Tasteful collaborations that celebrate coastal splendor.

Caribbean shrimp at Onda

ON THE HEELS OF Beach Club’s grand re-opening, Chef Sami Bourmeche’s excitement is hard to contain. In fact, it radiates from him.

That’s because for this seasoned chef of Marisol at Beach Club, the property’s reimagination s ignals a new era in coastal dining for Beachside’s restaurants, one that welcomes neverb efore-seen concepts as well as the return of a beloved classic. Part of the $130 million investment in Beach Club, the new culinary landscape i s a toast to the beauty of an eternal summer spent on our golden beach. Five dining concepts dot Beach Club’s picturesque landscape, each with distinct menus that feature the common denominator of coastal sophistication.

Bourmeche himself is no stranger to creating a menu based off seaside fare, where fresh fish and ingredients are de rigueur. His 18 years in culinary include working at Lucca, 501 East and Seagrille, and he believes Beach Club’s new dining will bring exciting new dishes to the table.

“ The new Beach Club is an elegant seaside landscape, so I knew that our food had to match the feeling,” Bourmeche says.

Part of that match includes adding a new slate of culinary masters that Bourmeche and his team can tap into to share and expand upon ideas. Such as the collaboration with Chef Johnny Spero, restaurateur and culinary mastermind of the Michelin-starred Reverie restaurant in Washington, D.C. Known for leaning i nto a seaside-focused menu—thanks to lengthy culinary stages at Mugaritz in coastal Spain and as executive chef at José Andrés’ Minibar in Washington, D.C., as well as an upbringing in the mid-Atlantic waters—Spero adds his take to Marisol’s menu.

Clockwise from left: Greek spread at Marisol, Chef Sami Bourmeche, and baked salt fish from Marisol

Considered one of The Boca Raton’s most popular restaurants among Club members and guests, M arisol’s new menu remains heavily inspired by the Mediterranean’s light fare, and mixes in Spero’s touch points of playfulness and layered flavors. Former menu favorites return—including savory lamb c hops with crispy potatoes and tzatziki, and tangy Greek spreads that Marisol is known for—and are joined by new dishes, like the scallop crudo that is loosely reminiscent of tzatziki.

“My goal is really to give new perspective on some classic takes of iconic dishes to the region,” Spero says. “It’s been such a collaborative effort. And the result is that we’re collectively giving great food on a plate in an elevated way.”

For Spero, collaborating with a Florida restaurant came as a surprise, but when the opportunity c ame to work with the team at Marisol, he knew he couldn’t pass it up. He counts The Boca Raton’s access to seafood from its Atlantic coast, as well as proximity to the aquatic offerings in the Gulf of Mexico, as significant factors that tugged at him.

Counterclockwise

But perhaps the most crucial one? The Boca Raton’s direct hook-to-table relationship. Cultivated ye ars ago by the property’s longtime Vice President of Culinary Operations Andrew Roenbeck, local fishermen come right to The Boca Raton’s dock, ready to hand out their morning’s haul to the property’s restaurants.

“ It’s the dream for every chef: seeing fish come off the boat straight from the fisherman,” Spero says. “I’m really driven by the ocean and the relationship that we have with it, and knowing that T he Boca Raton feels the same way is something that showed me how right this relationship felt for us all.”

For his part, Spero—whose Bar Spero was a James Beard semifinalist—firmly believes that Marisol’s history was already rich with talent, and he is thrilled to play a role in its future.

“The team members at Marisol and Beach Club are masters of their craft and what they do,

from front to back of the house,” he says. “They’ve thought of everything when designing the restaurants. It’s really fun to be a part of this team.”

B ourmeche says working with Spero was a dream. The two collaborated seamlessly in creating a unified vision for the revamped Marisol.

“Having the opportunity to express your ideas and your vision with him is a great benefit to our establishment,” Bourmeche says of Spero. “I see the future of this restaurant becoming more elevated, but still keeping the simplicity of cuisine, a staple of both Chef Spero and Marisol.”

Spero is not the only big name that Beach Club is working with to present renewed perspective.

Premiering this season is the brand-new Onda restaurant, a sand-side spot that spotlights a new culinary mastermind every year. Up first is Adriano Venturini, the executive chef of Eden Roc Cap Cana, the Dominican Republic’s only Relais & Châteaux hotel.

The Italian-born Venturini, who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in the United Kingdom and Italy, shares that when first presented w ith this collaborative opportunity, “I was thrilled to work with such an iconic location. Beach Club at The Boca Raton is known for its incredible atmosphere, and it felt like the perfect setting to bring t he Onda concept to life.”

Set against the undulating ocean waves, Onda’s outdoor locale is open for lunch and dinner. In its first season, Onda presents a cohesive menu created by Venturini and the Beach Club team, which includes a vibrant and diverse menu that celebrates the best of Caribbean flavors.

Standouts include the Langosta al Coco and the Pescado Boca Chica. Venturini says, “The Langosta al Coco is a true representation of the Caribbean flavors we want to highlight, with the creamy c oconut sauce perfectly complementing the delicate lobster.” And the Pescado Boca Chica? It “brings bold flavors and a satisfying crunch that guests love, especially when paired with our sauces.”

Marisol and Onda are just two of the new and revamped outlets at Beach Club. Sand Bar opens as a poolside gathering spot with a relaxed atmosphere. Here, guests are invited to discover a selec -

tion of creative cocktails and an extensive wine l ist while catching up with friends or catching the big game. Living Room is Beach Club’s revamped lounge, with opportunities to gather, refresh, and ruminate at its café, a bright, light-filled space. During the evening, Living Room transforms into a cocktail lounge with world-class mixologists hand-crafting elegant evening aperitifs amid a mesmerizing atmosphere that begets intimate conversations. And then there’s Ocean Market, where g uests can refuel without ever leaving their waterside retreat. The poolside market is open daily for qu ick gourmet bites and soft-serve ice cream that allow you to get back to your beach adventures without missing a beat.

As Bourmeche says, “I see the future of Beach Club’s restaurants becoming even more elevated, yet keeping the simplicity of cuisine.”

Where Society Assembles

How The Boca Raton lured the rich and famous to a sleepy farming town

AFULL-PAGE ADVERTISEMENT APPEARED in the Sept. 29, 1925 edition of the Washington D.C. Evening Star : “Where Society Assembles…Boca Raton as a resort city will attract the elite of America and Europe by its magnificent hotels, splendid clubs, and inviting casinos—the charm of its climate—its wealth of outdoor enjoyment—its distinction of social character.”

The Mizner Development Corporation’s Boca Raton project rocketed the tiny farming town of Boca Ratone (the spelling at the time) to international fame in 1925, when Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner announced his plans for the “dream city of the western world.” Mizner’s marketing department churned out hundreds of advertisements promoting his planned community inspired by ancient Spanish and Italian towns— but with American utilities and plenty of parking. Mizner had made many wealthy friends along the way; many of his clients with names like Vanderbilt and DuPont were now backers of his Boca Raton project. Interested investors could take a bus or seaplane from Palm Beach to come and view the new development project and, presumably, purchase property. Mizner designed a number of mansions for his wealthy acquaintances— including opera star Madame Frances Alda and Palm Beach socialite

A.E. Alexander—as well as model homes (similar to those in Floresta) for Dr. Maurice Druker, located where Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club sits today. Famous composer Irving Berlin, one of Mizner’s pals, reportedly planned a home here; he and Mizner were working on the design for a “cabaret ship” for Lake Boca Raton. Mizner’s own residence was to be a “castle” on an island in Lake Boca Raton, complete with working drawbridge and boathouse.

Local residents must have been agog at all the A-listers visiting town. The population swelled from about 200 farmers to as many as 5,000 potential real estate investors.

In 1925, there was absolutely nowhere to grab a bite to eat or a coffee for visitors, so Mizner opened one. Located in the Administration Buildings (now The Addison), it was cleverly called “Administration Restaurant.” Not just a hot dog stand, the restaurant was managed by Eric Larsen, a well-known New York

restaurateur, and served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It quickly expanded from the north building (where the bar is today) to the south building as well.

Mizner’s jewel in his crown, the Castillo del Rey, was to be built at the site of the current Beach Club (which reopened its doors at The Boca Raton in January). However, the Ritz Carlton investors requested a different firm to design the interior spaces, causing a construction delay. Meanwhile, there were no boarding houses or other accommodations in the little community for potential Mizner Development Corporation investors.

Mizner quickly designed the 100-room Cloister Inn, reportedly the most expensive structure built as of that time, on the western shore of Lake Boca Raton. He hosted many of his former Palm Beach clients in a Christmas Eve dinner in the unfinished “cloister” arcade overlooking the lake.

On Feb. 6, 1926, the new hotel opened to much acclaim. The guest list “rivaled the social registers of two continents,” according to the Mizner Development Corporation’s publicity machine. Resplendent footmen served a “Lucullan repast” to 500 guests including Stotesburys, Warburtons, Astors, and Wanamakers. Bessie Springs Smith, the widow of Stanford White (an architect much admired by Mizner), was in attendance and reported “Addison Mizner is the foremost genius of the age…This building is superb.”

The new hotel attracted a very tony crowd. Two famous actors of the day, Marie Dressler and Richard Barthelmess, could be seen along with composer Grant Clark, the hotel’s orchestra leader and creator of the song “You’re in Boca Raton.” An article from Feb. 16 declared “Cloister Inn is New Rendezvous,” describing it as a “center for social activity” and enumerating the many wealthy patrons who came for dinner or lunch parties. One of the early guests was Charles Ritz—son of César Ritz, the founder of the Ritz Carlton brand—and his new wife, Monique. They reportedly spent the entire season there. Clarence Darrow and famed WWI hero Alvin “Sergeant” York numbered amongst the guests.

Boca Raton’s wide-open beaches beckoned to hotel guests. Palm Beach social couple Frank and

Betty Henderson hosted a blocks-long Beefsteak Party for hundreds, complete with bonfires that could be seen from miles away. A Feb. 27 article announced that the “ocean beach at Boca Raton is a second Lido.” Cabanas arose at Mizner Beach—now Beach Club—for hotel guests. In several newspaper rotogravures, Helmar Liederman, the first Miss Alaska, appears carrying a “bubble boat” float as she frolics in the surf.

Speaking of snobbery, on Jan. 5, 1927, the first meeting of the Boca Raton Hunt Club convened at the Administration Building. There were 55 charter members, made of the local horsey crowd from well beyond Boca Raton city limits. One of their first get-togethers was a mounted delegation to meet the first train of the new Seaboard Air Line Railroad (now Amtrak) rolling into town on Jan. 8. In addition, there were actual hunts. The Moore Pack brought down an 8-point buck (probably on the grounds of the hotel) and for the Worden Pack, a huge bobcat. Ham Moore kept riding horses in a stable called the Corral north of Palmetto Park Road and west of the Florida East Coast Railway tracks.

Boca Raton also became a golfing capital with the arrival of Mizner. The Cloister Inn sported three courses: the Cloister course, a nine-hole course next to the hotel, and the Ritz Carlton Course, which opened in

1927 where Sugar Sand Park now stands. The latter, completed in 1927 at the end of the boom, was reported to be “the best in the state” due to its “sporty nature and splendid condition.” Impressive for a site the locals considered the outback.

The locals were not immune to the excitement of the times. Boca Raton pioneer Harriette Gates recalled afternoon tea and toast, dinner and dancing at the hotel. Chauffeurs tootled around in their clients’ Cadillacs. “Boca Raton was a huge anthill of industry and activity; people begged and prayed for lots at $$$, no matter what the price. But soon we woke up with a jolt, and gold dust underfoot became just plain Florida sand again.”

The boom was bust by 1926. By 1927, Mizner Development Corporation was bankrupt, and its assets, including the Cloister Inn, were acquired by Clarence Geist, one of Mizner’s backers. But that is a story for another day.

THE ART OF

AT THE BOCA RATON

Events are meant to be magical, and Tia Azzara and her team bring your vision to life.

THE WAY TIA AZZARA sees it, no two events are ever the same. Even though Azzara, The Boca Raton’s assistant director of catering, has seen it all, there’s unique sparkle in each of them. From opulent, multiday fêtes to intimate meetings for executives to relaxing beachside babymoons, Azzara says they are all a chance to wow and create p ersonalized experiences.

“Whether it’s a 20-person event or an 800-person event, the same care goes into each of them,” s ays Azzara, who has been at the property for nearly four years. “We do it all—from weddings, babymoons, anniversaries, corporate holiday parties, nonprofit galas, and everything in between. O ur entire team loves the details that go into making each one exceptional.”

What is the secret sauce that blends each of these multifaceted events into pitch-perfect timbre? Azzara sits down with us to discuss the magic formula found in each gathering at The Boca Raton.

What makes The Boca Raton feel like a special space to host an event?

When you step on the property, you can feel the opulence and the luxury service. There’s a high level of quality that can be achieved so easily and effortlessly here.

What are some adjectives you would use to describe events at The Boca Raton?

I could think of several—including memorable, elegant, dynamic, and breathtaking—but here are a few that stand out:

Iconic: With the history of the property and the indelible mark that we’ve left in the community and the Palm Beaches, we stand the test of t ime as a beacon for fantastic, iconic memories.

Imagined: Every event we do is envisioned in a different way. It brings out the creative nature of the client and draws out the imagination of our team.

What is an important quality of your job?

Listening. It’s the most important thing I do. Every reason someone is having an event is unique, a nd I need to understand why they are throwing a social event. It’s sort of a fact-finding expedition we do to discover why they are celebrating.

For example, if there’s a couple having their wedding here, I’ll ask questions like, where did

they meet? One couple met in Philadelphia and told me they have their best memories in Philly. So I thought, why not incorporate mini cheesesteaks? Or maybe it’s a couple who is traveling t o Italy. For one event, I learned that the couple loved Tuscany, so we imagined a Tuscan-themed event where we decorated the table with beautiful eggplant and Tuscan herbs and served Tu scan wines.

From the young and the small, to the older and the grand, I need to find out what makes people happy and extract the best portions of that to create memorable and breathtaking events.

How does The Boca Raton team–including Boca By Design and the culinary team–enhance the event experience?

Boca By Design is an incredibly creative fullservice event and floral design team that has the vision, expertise, and professionalism in designing events that truly captivate. They make everything so effortless, and there is so much trust that we have in each member of their team to execute a flawless event. And the best part for our clients? They are literally across the hall from my office. We don’t need to source anything out, and we know that it will all get done–and done correctly. You don’t have to think, and not thinking is what everybody dreams of. We do all the thinking for you.

The culinary team, led by Chef Andrew Roenbeck, is second to none. They are an elite team t hat truly listens to what the client is seeking to customize personalized menus, and execute with perfection. Our head pastry artist, Chef Stephen Day, creates amazing, out-of-the-box cakes that are like artwork. And Chef Sebastien Feneyrol, the executive pastry chef, brings a curated touch to all the desserts that we serve at our events.

Where do you find your inspiration when designing events?

I belong to a number of wedding networking groups, and I have colleagues who are leaders in the luxury market all around the globe who inspire me with their spectacular work.

I do my best to pay attention to what else is going on in the world, like if there’s an epic wedding t hat takes place at the Great Pyramid of Giza. Trends do come and go, and it’s important that we’re on top of those things, and inspiring people to look at what’s ahead.

For example, fireworks used to be all the rage to end an event, but now it’s a drone show. We can put a company logo in the drone show, and they can even make your face out of drones. There’s new technology and new LED screens, all giving us new ways to create extraordinary moments.

What are some event highlights that we can look forward to at Beach Club?

There is a beautiful new vibe at Beach Club consisting of coastal chic and Cannes undertones, plus a palette of natural hues that feel calming against the blues of the Atlantic Ocean. There is a reimagined ballroom, plus an outdoor lawn space that can be tented, and a pool deck. Having these various spaces that are all unique creates different atmospheres and multiple stages for your event. For example, you can do a beautiful welcome party on the lawn on a Friday, and then on S aturday you can put on your ball gown for a big event at Cathedral ballroom at Harborside. Later on Sunday, you can have brunch on the Venetian lawn. With each different part of the itinerary, you will be transported to a different part of The Boca Raton.

How can clients take advantage of the endless amenities at The Boca Raton while hosting their events?

Let’s say you have a 20-person executive meeting. Well, you can break the day up by playing nine

Tia Azzara

holes of golf in the morning, then go to lunch, then have an afternoon meeting. In the afternoon, you can do a pickleball tournament at Racquet Club, and then have a reception on the Harborside lawn overlooking the Intracoastal.

Or if it’s a wedding, the ladies can do a spa day at Spa Palmera while the gents can do a tennis tournament and enjoy our new Racquet Bar. Later, you can have a sunset cruise on one of our catamarans.

These are activities that are opportunities to make more memories throughout your time on the property. We want you to leave saying, “I can’t wait to come back.”

What’s a big tip that you would give to your future clients?

Magic needs time, care and finesse. And by working with our team early in the process, you will experience nothing but that.

How have you changed since starting this career?

My team and I recognize the preciousness of life, meaning that it’s short. There are so many moments to be celebrated, and with that comes an extreme amount of care on our part. We want to see you have the best moments of your life here.

What keeps this job meaningful for you?

If I can make a handful of people happy and give them memories, that makes my job worthwhile.
