Bio Drawing since she was able to pick up a pencil, Jessica Hoskins decided to take her career to the next level by becoming a graphic designer. Born and raised in a rural community near Sacramento, California, Jessica has been attending Sierra College where she is earning numerous degrees and certificates in the fields of Graphic Design, Illustration, and Multimedia. Jessica’s entry into professional design came through her work branding Knights Unlimited and Native Ink. In addition, she and a partner are responsible for creating the Believe logo, which was created for a volunteer group assisting cancer patients as they go through treatment. Her biggest achievement was designing the book Communities of the Mount Shasta Region for Sierra College Professor, Carol Jean Cox, in 2013. Being an artist as well, Jessica has been in both school and TV show related galleries. In 2012 she was in the Knight Rider Gallery for the Knight Rider Reunion where she presented her love for the show.

Since then, Jessica has been in many galleries in her college campus where she has had the chance to present all of her artistic and print work. Jessica is also an exhibiting artist and has shown her work across California. Most notably, Jessica participated in a Knight Rider enthusiast’s exhibition in which she presented more than twenty-five pieces of her work dedicated to the show. In addition, she has shown in the Hunjo, Ridley and Uppercase galleries on the Sierra College campus. After graduating from Sierra College, Jessica intends receive her BA in a graphic design and illustration field through a California State College. She plans to go further and join a design group or company.

Communities of the Mount Shasta Region Challenge: Sierra College Professor Carol Jean Cox has been taking her geographical students to the rural communities of the Mount Shasta Region for years. She wanted to create a book on these historic towns with the past and geography in mind. Maps, color images, text, and references had to be edited and placed carefully to keep the book at a reasonable price.

Solution: A co-designer and I put together a layout that shows off all of the wonderful images of the little towns and yet creates a nice and small book that is the collection of all of Carol’s work.

Dimensions: 196 pages, 5.5 x 8.5 x .5 inches Color cover, Black and White interior Paperback

Deconstruction Typographical Era Challenge: The Deconstruction typographical era has always been a unique era in the design world to me. I wanted to design a book that would have the information needed about the era yet have the same feeling as the era itself.

Solution: I wanted a book that was as crazy as the typographical era itself. The book is short and wide instead of the normal tall and thin. There are two typefaces that constantly switch back and forth. The images reflect what deconstruction is.

Dimensions: 24 pages, 8.5 x 5.5 x .2 inches Color cover, Color interior Paperback

Jorinsco Productions Website Portfolio Challenge: A six page layout was required for this website. It had to contain a rollover image, a disjointed rollover image, a menu bar, a contact page, a favicon, along with text for each page. Each page had to be designed carefully to create an even tone throughout the entire website.

Solution: The website is a portfolio website, containing all of my best work in every medium I do. It has a black, white, and red color scheme (the only bright colors are in the logo on the rollover). I wanted the feel of the site to be informal and to project who I am.

Dimensions: 6 pages, 960 pixels wide

Flash Portfolio Challenge: Each project was a challenge of it’s own. We had to create an animated pattern, an animated logo, an animated image, an animated banner and matching ad, and an interactive animated e-card or choose your own adventure and put everything into a flash portfolio.

Solution: Each piece is a creation with it’s own color scheme, story board, and theme, carefully put together in a seamless looped animation. All pieces are set in a portfolio page that bring them all together.

Dimensions: 1 page, 8 files, 960 x 700 pixels 1 pattern, 2 logos, 2 images, 1 ad, 1 banner, 1 e-card

Innovation Day Poster Challenge: We had to take an artistic quote and design a poster with the quote, source, and our name on the piece. It was required to be designed in black and white, then designed with color in mind.

Solution: An inspirational quote I found in a book really stood out to me and I chose it for this poster. The poster is a bright image where the type stands out in parts to really define it’s meaning. The color poster is the inverted version of th black and white one.

Dimensions: 13 x 19 inches

15

Typographical Portfolio Cover Challenge: We had to create vertical a black and white portfolio cover with a certain typeface as the theme, then add color. The requirements were to use the correct typefaces as the design, add in the history of the typeface, use the alphabet, and use different fonts as examples.

Solution: I used a letter from the font Eurostile to create the whole design. It encompasses the fonts and the historical aspect of the piece. The color sets off the piece and brings out the modern in the sanserif typeface.

Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 inches

Believe Logo Challenge: A client came to my co-designer and me wanting to create a logo that would be sewn onto bags, scarfs, and much more along with being put onto a website. She wanted it to match the lavender cancer theme that her late daughter wished it to be.

Solution: We went through a series of fonts and typefaces and images of the word before we settled on this logo. There are different versions of it with a crown, a halo, and then just the word itself. The “L is a cancer ribbon that’s incorporated in the word.

Dimensions: 4 x 7.75 inches Placed on bags, scarves, beanies, & website

19

Type Logo Challenge: We had to take our initials and create a logo out of them. We had to use different fonts for each letter and use a color scheme.

Solution: I wanted something that would look unique, yet you could tell what the letters were. Each logo was colored carefullyto make it look together.

Dimensions: 4.25 x 4.25 inches

Zebra K.I.T.T. Challenge: I was given an image of K.I.T.T. at a storage unit. I was told to make this an interesting image with some wild colors.

Solution: The stripes on the hood are the best part of this image and they are what stands out the most. The color is fully saturated to give a wildness to the image.

Dimensions: 14 x 11 inches, 300 ppi

23

Scott Mutter Montage Challenge: The requirements for this project was to make a montage. We had to use at least three different images and make an image based of a famous photographer’s work.

Solution: Scott Mutter inspired me with this project. This image is based off of his montage works that he did with film photography. I took three images of New York and New Jersey and put them together to create a piece based off of his work.

Dimensions: 11 x 6 inches, 300 ppi

26

Reflections Challenge: This project was required to take an image and flip it, creating a unique piece.

Solution: I took this image and thought it would be perfect for this piece. It has a myriad of colors and lines and shapes.

Dimensions: 14 x 11 inches, 300 ppi

27

New York Skyline Challenge: The requirement for this piece was to have it black and white and show a great range in gray scale.

Solution: I wanted to capture the simpleness of New York City by showing it in black and white only. It shows contrast yet is simple in it’s range of gray scale.

Dimensions: 14 x 9 inches, 300 ppi

Standing Outside the Fire Challenge: The requirements were to take an image and add a vectorized image and text to it.

Solution: The simpleness of this piece is to convey the message of text inside the image. The text is actually the lyrics to a song, “Standing Outside the Fire” by Garth Brooks, meaning you don’t get anywhere in life if you don’t get burnt once in a while. The photo I took of a fire fit the song and really puts a meaning behind the whole piece.

Dimensions: 9.5 x 14.75 inches, 300 ppi

31

Seaside Diptych Challenge: The challenge for this piece was to take two images and piece them together to make one. It could be any color or any size.

Solution: This piece shows a place where people have fun and spend their vacations empty of any one person. These two images work well together, especially being black and white. It ads to the mysteriousness of it.

Dimensions: 20 x 9 inches, 300 ppi

32

33

34

Dodge Viper Poster Challenge: The requirements were to make a poster with only a piece of the car showing. It had to contain the name of the car and it’s logo.

Solution: The vent of a car is an important piece of it, without it, the car wouldn’t get air to the engine and wouldn’t have as much horsepower. The flames show that power and the heat coming from the engine. It makes it where the car seems too hot to touch, making it seem dangerous.

Dimensions: 14 x 9 inches, 300 ppi

35

Fired Up Challenge: The challenge was to make a car feel like it was on fire. It had to look real and almost have a Ghost Rider feel to it.

Solution: K.I.T.T. is a gentle soul that is programed to do any harm to any one person. I took that and twisted it, making K.I.T.T. look the complete opposite to what he is. He is on fire, giving him a dangerous feeling.

Dimensions: 14 x 11 inches, 300 ppi

37

38

Release the Mustangs Challenge: The requirements were to use an already made 3D object, brushes, and an image, all taken from another source (with the correct Copyright usage). A 3D object created in Photoshop had to be used as well.

Solution: The word ‘Mustang’ is used in many different ways. A car, a horse, and a plane. I took those objects and gave them life.

Dimensions: 11 x 14 inches, 300 ppi

Designer’s Statement Since I was a child, my art has bared my thoughts to the world. My grandmother would teach me to draw late at night when I lived with her. Thus began my wild journey in learning to create. I became a serious graphic design student in high school. I traveled the world and was influenced by the different artistic and design cultures. I started playing with images for the television show Knight Rider. After a classmate did graphic design as her senior project. I was hooked. My work as a graphic designer is a way for me to help with world see my artistic abilities. I have designed books, pamphlets, logos, websites, posters, and business cards that brand people or companies to enhance their recognition.

40

I use many materials and programs to complete my designs, including photographs, drawings, textures, and sketches. I use typography in my work as a design to make a bold statement. I have done multiple works in a cohesive style. I strive to meet my clients’ needs, changing the style or look to fit their desires. I begin with rough sketches of multiple concepts and finish with a completed design that suits the clients’ needs. The feeling of having people hold my work in their hands and interact with it is indescribable. It gives me great joy to see their faces light up and inspires me to do more.
