Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if all of my history lessons at school had been taught by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Not only would I have actually had an interest in history, but I would have been an expert. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda would’ve been my history teacher, so you know, that would’ve been pretty cool. If you’re unfamiliar with the name Lin-Manuel Miranda, first of all I would like to ask, where have you been? Secondly, I would like to let you know that you are so lucky to be able to discover his work for the first time and you’re probably about to spend the next 48 hours or so down a YouTube rabbit hole of his work, and I envy you for that! Please remember to stay hydrated. Miranda’s work stretches from the theatre; where he won a Tony award for his music and lyrical work on the musical, ‘In the Heights’, to the world of Disney where his work on the soundtrack for ‘Moana’ won him a Grammy for Best song written for visual media with the popular song ‘How far I’ll go’. But perhaps his most famous work comes in the form of an internationally known, award winning musical, thanks to an American founding father born way back in 1757. Hamilton. When I got told I was getting the opportunity to see Hamilton live in London, my inner theatre kid screamed. My outer nineteenyear-old self also screamed. You get told you’re going to see Hamilton live and tell me you don’t scream. If you’re a fan of Hamilton then you will definitely have listened

to the album, more than once, probably, I’m guessing, every day? And you will know all the words and you will have had to single-handedly sing all the parts of all the characters, and the ensemble, and maybe even at times, the orchestra. Did I say sing? Sorry, I meant perform. So, to sit in the audience of the live show and not sing, is a challenge. That is, for the first few lines until you hear the vocals of the cast on stage and suddenly the desire to just listen and appreciate the art happening in front of you, overrides the desire to show off your one man show of Hamilton (mostly). The story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of America is one told with great respect and passion. The musical tells the story of his life through the medium of music, starting with his immigration to America from The Caribbean without a dollar to his name, and follows him as he fights in the American revolution, becomes George Washington’s right-hand man and became the first secretary of treasury, all before his death in 1804 after a duel with vice president, Aaron Burr. The musical also shows Hamilton’s personal life and how it intertwined with his political life. From his marriage, his affair and the death of his son. There are moments that will have you crying with laughter, and there are moments where you could hear a pin drop and the audience is captivated. Hamilton is a game changer. The musical originated after LinManuel Miranda read ‘Alexander Hamilton’ by Chernow, an 800page biography of Hamilton’s life. Somehow Miranda managed to turn 800 pages and 30 years of vital American history into a two hour and 45-minute piece of art.

After an extensive search to find a British cast that matched up to the original, iconic Broadway cast, the chosen few were finally decided upon ready for the opening of the musical in 2017. The new cast did not disappoint. Giles Terera as Aaaron Burr and a sort of narrator for the story captured the audience’s hearts. Rachelle Ann Go and Rachel John as Eliza and Angelica Schuyler, along with Jamael Westman as Alexander Hamilton have the ability to make the audience laugh and cry and you hang on to their every word as they tell the story and make you feel as if you are living it with them. The two standout characters of the show was the comedic role of King George played by Michael Jibson and Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson both of whom were played by Jason Pennycooke, who had the audience laughing even after hard hitting scenes. Together with the ensemble and the orchestra, the cast produced a show like no other. Combining hip hop with the theatre has been a pinnacle moment for Broadway and The West End and it is no wonder that this musical is the one that’s everyone is talking about. Hamilton is a show that deserves all the hype it is getting. Walking out of the theatre you will immediately want to go and change the world and make the most of every moment. The songs will stay in your head for the next three weeks, which is a good thing trust me, and you will have a newfound respect for how hard the cast and crew have clearly worked to produce a show as powerful as this one.

6

My advice to you is go and see Hamilton at the Victoria Palace theatre immediately. And take tissues. Lots of tissues.
