The First Drop
(Jesse) Jiaxin Zeng
BACKGROUND INFORMATION COMPANY FIRST is a global technology company special-
izing in smart water bottles and innovative glass technologies to enhance people’s day-to-day lives. The company began as a small startup in Los Angeles, CA, and it still has its headquartered there. As part of creating a diverse talent base and offering staff more opportunities to work remotely, FIRST will be opening an office in Phoenix, AZ. FIRST also provides a more robust option to an already progressive work from home policy. new office
NEED
FIRST would like the new office to not only reflect their brand and culture but draw inspiration from the local region. That is why they chose a historic building in downtown Phoenix for adaptive reuse. They would like their new office to be Smart, Sustainable, Energy efficient, and a relaxing place for the employees.

concept statement
When I think about phoenix, I think about all the harsh sunlight and how much I missed the cooling rain felt on the skin. So for this office in the Pheonix. I envision it as a place that brings a cooling and calming sensation to everyone who enters it and inspires them to think not as straight lines but more of going with the flow. For this office space and the company as a whole, I envision the space as the first water drop from the sky onto the Arizona desert. The idea born in this office would hit the ground and create this ripple effect. That would impact everything and everyone that is around it.

Color Palette
the primary color I chose is a gray tone to give this cloudy day and is about to rain feeling. These colors would help me create a cooling sensation. I also select a sandy brown to represent the Arizona desert and Carolina blue to represent the Arizona blue sky.

Material Palette
glass block
I chose the glass block and the translucent concrete wall to help let more sunlight in yet without losing privacy. The stainless steel panel help create an underwater feeling. The Kinetex carpet is durable and environmentally friendly. The arktura acoustical panel and Xorel Carnegie are both help with the acoustic of the space.

Acoustics rationale
Particle®’s optional non-woven acoustic fabric backer material reduces noise from everyday annoyances like ringing, typing, and chatter resulting in a more pleasant and productive environment. The acoustical backer works in concert with the design to help reduce and control reverberations leaving a lasting impression at scales ranging from assembly halls to conference rooms.
These are Arktura acoustic walls and ceiling panels. Can add custom colors, non-woven acoustic fabric backers to reduce noise, and Arktura’s integrated lighting.
conclution In conclusion, I have used all the sustainable materials and utilized the space, giving a more open and flexible interior to help minimize the construction. The finish and furniture I choose are all sustaniable. I also have employe the displacement ventaliation, the greywater harvesting system, the rain water harvest system, and the solar panel to make the overall buidling as sustainable and effecient as possible. The building’s overall health design allowed more sunlight and let clean air flow. I have achieved those by designing the water feature that would filter the air from the outside into cooling and cleaner air. The operating skylight help with the ventaliation as well. The enormous glazing around the building that uses smart glass would let more sunlight in without overheating the space. It would also encourage the employee to spending more time in the garden space.
