Nordic Heritage Museum


The taut extruded form recalls the adjacent working waterfront and Nordic shipbuilding heritage long after gentrification of Ballard has removed all trace. Cut and shifted, the connecting mass serves to unite the two worlds while forming Ballard and waterfront public spaces and a direct connection between them.

Concept 1

The taut cantelevered form recalls the nordic ‘stabbur’ (storehouse), in which artifact is stored above while community meets below. The central massing connects the two worlds while the porosity of the first floor permits movement and views from Ballard to the water.

The taut extruded form recalls the adjacent working waterfront and nordic shipbuilding heritage long after gentrification of Ballard has removed all trace. Cut and slipped past each other, the connecting mass forms an internal space in which to gather while defining a diversity of outdoor space.

Concept 3


Context, energy and simplicity are the essence of this proposal. Like the sail which has historically connected Nordic people, the Nordic Heritage Museum proposal applies simple solutions to the nuanced problem of sustainability. The simple iconic form of the museum connects to the working waterfront vernacular of Ballard and the shipbuilding structures of the old world, while preserving this character as the area gentrifies and redevelops. The built museum elements of old world and new world are interjected and connected by ocean, nature, views to Ballard and activity of the gritty waterfront. The simple sail, which employs humans to trim and harness natural forces, is the basis for the net-zero energy solution. Chains and sprockets turn louvers, open roofs and hoist shades to regulate comfort in the atrium. Hitech photovoltaic panels capture the sun to operate valves allowing passive flow of air and natural regulation of humidity and temperature, an otherwise large consumer of energy in conventional museums. Daylight, attenuated by modern filters and directed by louvers renders the gallery spaces in efficient light. Water is captured and reused. This simple preservation of energy and context of community is the Nordic virtue, to which this proposal aspires.

The east-west orientation of the building with 33 degree south slope of the gabled roof facilitates a large pv array with an integrated roof design. The estimated annual production by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is 251,000 kWh.

In attempting to achieve net-zero energy for the Nordic Heritage Museum, it is important to also consider the energy expenditure made by visitors in transit to the site. To model this we relied on several assumptions: an average commute in Seattle is 16 miles, two riders per car with an average of 20 mpg, 9 riders per bus with an average of 6 mpg, an average of 50,000 unique museum visits per year (including staff), and a site energy generation capacity of 251,000 kWh. car parking

To incentivize bicycle ridership, we are proposing to complete the Burke-Gilman Bikeway through our site. This offers cyclists a safer and more interesting passage than Market St. which they are currently forced to use. Attractive bicycle facilities on-site - lockup, sheltered storage, prioritized views, etc., will also provide optimal access and more fun than the alternative transportation options.

The Nordic Heritage Museum’s space conditioning requirements demand stabile temperature and humdity, while maintaining human comfort. Strategies include passive design elements: high thermal mass building with a highly insulated and tightly sealed envelope using triple glazed operable windows with night insulation. Stack ventilation is used for cooling and passive control of humidity which is buffered by 8� hollow unfired masonry. Inlet air is delivered through hollow-core floor slabs, and all air movement is mechanically modulated. The unbuffered and isolated atrium is allowed wider climate swings. Hydronic ground source heat pumps are added to zone and provide even distribution of heat. By first employing passive strategies, we anticipate only 24,353 kWh a - 10% of our PV budget - to operate.
