COLERAIN TOWNSHIP

For my fourth and fifth Co-Op semesters, I had the pleasure to work at the local government level working for Colerain Township. Colerain Township is located North of Cincinnati and is the second-largest township in Ohio by population and the second-largest in area as well. The Township currently sits at a population of 58,499. During my year at the Township I was able to assist with and contribute to a number of different projects and work. These projects ranged from working in GIS and mapping, planning and zoning, code enforcement and administration abilities. One of the main projects that I worked on was updating the zoning for the entire Township. A map of that is displayed on the right page along with a few maps displaying the topography and hillside overlay within the Township. This shows that the majority of the West side of the Township is extremely hilly compared to the right side which houses most of the population.

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP

Working for the local government branch was quite the experience. I got to learn so much about Colerain Township, the employees, and the residents that live there. It is an amazing community and it proved to be a great learning opportunity. The maps to the left are some sample maps that I completed during my Co-Op duration. The one directly to the right on page 10 displays all the public buildings along with Metro bus stops and routes.

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP

During my time at Colerain Township, I had the opportunity to create a signage inventory for freestanding signs all throughout the Township. Signage is important for a number of reasons. Colerain Township has a wide variety of different kinds of signage throughout the entire Township ranging from tall freestanding signs to wall signs. Most of the signage falls along all of the business corridors; mainly Colerain Avenue, Cheviot Road, Springdale Road and Galbraith Road. Colerain Avenue alone is nearly 5 miles long with signs running throughout its entire length. Signage is extremely important because it tells people where a certain business is and where they’re located. Businesses, gas stations, residential complexes, and so forth all rely on signs to indicated their premises. The size and location of signs are designed to attract customers and with upgrades in technology, digital signage is popular due to industry changes. Creating a Signage Inventory for Colerain Township allows not only the Planning and Zoning Department to located and read details about the signage in a certain area, but anyone who is interested.

SUMMER STUDIO ‘17

During our last summer session as an undergraduate student at UC, our class was given the opportunity to create a new vision for a specific area in Downtown Cincinnati. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County main branch is located in our study area in which our study area is between the unique Overthe-Rhine neighborhood and the Central Business District. The North Building of the Downtown Public Library is currently up for sale and my groupmate Dave and I were given the task to revitalize this existing building into a new use and to come up with a new, exciting plan for the surrounding blocks as well. The location of our site is in the core of adjunct areas which could not only be a great economical boost, but a great boost to rebrand the existing area. Right: Photos displaying core factors and ascetics of the neighborhood and a map displaying the location. The alleyways and architecture are great characteristics to improve upon.

14

SUMMER STUDIO ‘17

The Midtown Cincinnati area was missing a key connection for pedestrians, visitors, and the residents that already occupied the area. We wanted to bring more residents in while adding greenspace and more outdoor areas for everyone. Connecting the unused alleys in Cincinnati and redesigning the North Building of the Library were our main objectives. We decided to build onto the North Library, rather than completely destroy it. Adding a total of 175 residential units, revitalizing the alleyways and creating new greenspace connections would completely transform the area. The images to the right show an abstract idea on how a greenspace and alleyway connection could work in the area as well as two new renderings of public spaces around the library. To the complete right on the other page shows what we proposed for the New North Building. We added terraces on the building to have the greenspace continue not just on the pedestrian level, but additionally up the whole building.

16

SUMMER STUDIO ‘17

Along with design our new concept for the Midtown area, we had to think of the financial and economic aspects of this project. To the right are diagrams for our new building that we proposed along with a stakeholder diagram who my partner and I thought were the most important stakeholders for our project. MAIN GOAL: Create a sense of community and security by increasing the access to public-pedestrian friendly spaces and new residential opportunities which will exponentially enhance the overall midtown experience while focusing on the essential resource of the Cincinnati Main Public Library. ETHICAL & THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS: With the introduction of market rate housing and beautification brings the potential for gentrification and changing demographics. We hope to include attainable housing and inclusive environments to ensure the Library and surrounding neighborhoods remains a resource for all.

WASSON WAY For my junior year studio, our studio centralized around the Wass Way Project. The proposed Wasson Way Corridor runs slightly along the Little Miami River at the end of its route, and could reach all the way to Plainville and adjunct to Terrace Park. Section 10 consisted of the area to the right beneath the Little Miami by Avoca Park, Kroger Hills State Reserve, and Terrace Park Country Club. The railway area that my partner Lauren Bihl and I analyzed consisted mainly of an area with three main roads: Round Bottom Road, Mt. Carmel Road, and Broadwell Road. We composed four main maps to show important detail to the area: a base map showing existing conditions, land use map, a property ownership map and a map showing aerials from 1932, 1950, and 1970 to show how much has changed and what has stayed the same.

Section 10 conformed of mainly industrial and commercial areas with the railroad running straight through the middle of the area. There is additionally some rural single family, multi-family residential, parks and recreation area along with parcels of vacant land. Maps to the right display our findings and observations.

MASTER PLANNING

Creating Zelkova completed the last step in the final assignment that myself and two other team members created for our Fall 2014 Studio. We had to design a community on steep topography with a certain amount of housing: single family and multi-family dwellings, commercial, retail and parks and recreation facilities. Our site was theoretically located in Mt. Airy Forest in the Cincinnati region. The existing land had nothing on it but trees, so we decided to go with a ‘naturalistic’ vibe in our master plan. We additionally completed a laser cut model of our topography along with painted roads and trees. We decided to name our community Zelkova, named after a zelkova serrata tree. Those were one of the types of trees found in throughout our hillside site. Our final posters are displayed on pages 24 and 25. They show our entire process and thoughts during the semester.

PHOTOSHOP Photoshop is one of the many softwares that I know how to use. Photoshop is one of my favorite programs. I have been familiar with it ever since high school. Throughout the years I have had to create a number of miscellaneous projects in Photoshop. The two section elevations to the right on page 26 were done for a few projects my sophomore year of college. On page 27, I created a Code Enforcement Regulations and Information pamphlet for residents. I created this through Photoshop to highlight the regulations that Colerain Township enforces on properties so that residents will be made aware of them and comply. Photoshop is an easy tool that everyone can use. It allows the user to display images and visual entities instead of having to worry about everything in the text and boring tables.

GOOGLE SKETCHUP During my Co-Op at Cuyahoga County Planning Commission in my junior year of college, I worked on a number of different projects, expanding my experience with numerous softwares. I really wanted to improve my skills in a number of different programs so this Co-Op was extremely beneficial towards my goal. I worked on a few models in Google SketchUp for the City of Olmsted Falls and Cleveland Heights. This really allowed me to familiarize myself with SketchUp. These models and renderings to the right were used to show future additional buildings and plans for both towns. The section elevation of the residential community at the bottom of page 28 is a rendering that I completed for a class my senior year. I just added it onto this page because it showcases my SketchUp abilities.

PHOTOGRAPHY I have always loved taking photos ever since I could remember. They let you remember memories that you could forget about. I additionally love to travel so that allows me to take pictures of new places. I’m definitely not good at taking photos or anywhere close to being a professional, but it’s something that I love to do. I love taking photos of cool urban areas, interesting architecture, and nature.
