WHO AM I? My name is Jessica Nicole Suarez. I am 22 years old and I am currently a graduate student in the Florida International University Master of Architecture program. I studied a semester in Genoa, Italy, which helped feed my addiction to traveling. It is one of my favorite things, along with outdoor activities, art, and books. My favorite colors are purple, lime green, coral, pastels, and muted tones.
SUAREZ Who Am I?_M.1
COLOR + THEORY Color theory is the study and practice of a set of principles used to understand the relationships among colors
Colors come from light. The three properties of light are reflection, diffraction, and refraction. You can view color directly on a particular surface or indirectly on an adjoining or opposite surface as a reflection. One word that I never heard until reading this chapter is metamerism. It means that your perception of a color will change according to the light source producing it.

CONCEPT DESIGN Idea Store is a project that Tower Hamlets Council started to make the public more interested in spending time at the library. There are seven locations, five of them being remodeled from existing buildings, and two being new buildings (both designed by David Adjaye). In order to make the Whitechapel Idea Store (2005) more enticing to the public, Adjaye used different hues of blue and green glass panels, representative of the sky and landscape seen outside. The colors relating to the site and the transparency of the material helps to blur the boundaries between the interior and the exterior of the building. Another way he invites pedestriants to enter the building is by placing a public escalator on the sidewalk that leads straight into the building.
Suarez
FACADE
Adjaye uses mostly COOL COLORS on the facade of the building. He uses different hues of GREEN and BLUE glass. The reflectivity of the glass shows hints of the SKY. Even the trash bins on the side of the building follow the color scheme with MAGENTA. In certain sunlight, the facade shows hints of YELLOW, which is the only color that strays from the cool color scheme. Suarez
ESCALATOR The public escalator that leads from the sidewalk to the interior of the building is sandwiched between two facade elements. This moment shows an ANALOGOUS color scheme, using the GREEN and YELLOW hues that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
Suarez
LIBRARY Another ANALOGOUS color scheme is shown in the library. This time, Adjaye uses WARM COLORS to CONTRAST the color scheme of the facade. RED being a color commonly related to PASSION, the brave use of it on the flooring and colomns may be Adjaye’s way of sparking people’s interest in reading. Suarez
SEATING
The free wifi seating areas uses almost all hues. It may be generally considered an ANALOGOUS color scheme since all the hues are next to each other on the color wheel. However, when you look at specific elements Adjaye creates CONTRAST. For example, the tables are BLUE and chairs are ORANGY (complimentary), and the facade is BLUE and GREEN and the floor is RED (split-complimentary).
Suarez
DANCE STUDIO Another ANALOGOUS color scheme! Although the GREEN of the facade and the ORANGY tones of the flooring and ceiling structure are the main colors in this room, it is arguable that the SUNLIGHT also plays a big roll in the vibe of the space. It creates a warm ORANGE GLOW, which is very soothing and promotes control, ambition, and strength, all things an aspiring dancer would find necessary. Suarez
CONCLUSION David Adjaye uses an array of ANALOGOUS color schemes in each room of the Whitechapel Idea Store. He plays with the use of COOL COLORS and WARM COLORS depending on the mood necessary for the particular use of each space. He even uses certain details to demonstrate CONTRAST to keep your eyes interested. The colors he uses are clear and SATURATED to help with the main purpose of the building, which is to keep people interested in the library and reading.

INTERSTELLAR
SUAREZ Color + Environment _ FILM ANALYSIS_M.4
FILM SUMMARY Interstellar takes place in a future dimension in which the earth is running low on resources and slowly becoming uninhabitable. We follow the main character, Joe Cooper, and a team of NASA astronauts on their journey through a wormhole in search of an inhabitable planet to save mankind. The plot of the film thickens as we come across themes of love, fear, anger, hope, longing, and surrender. These human emotions are emphasized by the color schemes of the scenes.
Let’s take a closer look.
DELETE this image and insert another meaningful image from the film. Suarez
SCENE ANALYSIS The first scenes of the movie show a family in Colorado in the year 2065. They are struggling to deal with the depleting earth and all the sacrifices they have made because of it. The main character, Joe Cooper, is a father of two and a former engineer. He watches as his kids are not allowed to reach their full potential in education in order to train as farmers. It also becomes apparent that the mother of the two children has died because of this resource deficiency.
ORANGE Every scene in this setting has an orange-y tint over it. This symbolizes the danger and intrusiveness of their situation.
BLUE The blue tones of the sky and mountains in the distance add to the depressive feeling of these scenes.
DARK GREEN The green of the crops represents nature. Since most of the time the green is a darker tone, it shows the unhealthiness of the earth.

Once through the wormhole, the NASA crew decides to head to Miller’s planet first. Being in a new galaxy lightyears away from earth, they have no idea what to expect of it. They notice that all they can see on the surface of the planet is water. Therefore, they quickly realize that they are in danger. What they thought were mountains in the background were actually giant waves that they could not possibly survive.
BEIGE The color beige is used as a contrast color for the darker tones in this scene. It is a serene color, perhaps used to represent the calm of the ocean.
GRAY The many shades of gray represent the confusion of the situation. As the wave gets closer to them and their shuttle, the darker grays represent their loss of confidence.
DARK BLUE The dark blue of the wave symbolizes the strength and authority it has over them.

SCENE ANALYSIS When they reach Mann’s planet they are told that the conditions of the planet are suitable for humans to live there. They are overcome with hope, only to have it deflated by the discovery that the cold, icy planet is actually toxic to humans. This initiates a conflict between Cooper and Mann, who tries to kill Cooper by breaking the glass of his helmet, leaving him with no oxygen.
WHITE Towards the beginning of the scene the planet is mostly shown as white, which symbolizes the purity of the planet and rebirth of humankind.
LIGHT BLUE The light blue tints create a visual for the physical coolness of the planet. They also represent loyalty, success, and reflection as they inspect this supposedly inhabitable world.
RED It is interesting to note that the only contrast color in this scene is the dark red worn by the betrayer. The color shows his aggression toward Cooper

COLOR + BALANCE
Balance is the relationship of different hues to one another when each is perceived to be equal in perceived visual weight. Three types of balance are symmetry, asymmetry, and radial. Four types of color application are value contrast, hue balance, intensity contrast, and size of color area.

COLOR + RHYTHM
Rhythm is movement. Some types of rhythm are repetition, recurrence, and sequencing to create a pattern. 5 types of rhythm associated with color are repetition, alternation, progression, continuation, and radiation These rhythms can be achieved through hue, sequence, value sequence, and multiple-color sequence.

CONTRAST OF HUE H&M uses mostly beige and white throughout the interior of the store. This green set of drawers with a wood frame is not only used as storage space for the clothes, but as a contrast of hue. The choice to use green is a good way to spark the interest of the younger customers. Suarez
CONTRAST OF VALUE When moving through each space there are definite changes in color scheme. Here is an example of contrast of value when looking from the women’s section to the men’s section. The color scheme becomes much darker tones of green, brown, gold, and black, guiding your eyes through the space of white walls to the darker interior of the next space. Suarez
CONTRAST OF A DESIGN FEATURE This array of layer arches spans the length of the store. When looking at this central double heighted space in comparison to the smaller spaces on the sides, it creates a contrast of a design feature, guiding the users through the space. Suarez
CONTRAST OF TEXTURE When walking toward the store we see the H&M sign, which was originally a sign for the Lincoln Theatre. The shiny metal material used creates a contrast of texture with the rest of the surrounding buildings, creating emphasis to catch the attention of potential customers. Suarez
FOCAL POINT The focal point of the interior of the store is a huge, bright projection showing different images of models wearing their products. This is something that is very hard to miss, advertising their clothing and accessories and sometimes it even turns into a big red sale sign. The location of this wall is right behind the cash register, which help to lead shoppers to what should be their final destination before leaving. Suarez
COLOR + [PROPORTION + SCALE] + [UNITY + HARMONY]
Proportion can be thought of as the size relationships between objects while scale can be thought of as the size of an object in relation to another. Designers may follow different methods as a set of rules to follow regarding proportion and scale. Some examples are the golden section, the Fibonacci Sequence, Le Modulor, and simply nature. Unity is the repetition of color, while harmony is a balance of colors. The seven ways you can use color to achieve color harmony are monochromatic, complementary, split complementary and double complementary, analogous, triadic and tetrad, multi-hue, and achromatic. M.10 COLOR + RENDERING The color palette is inspired by this image of a jelly fish in the ocean. The image is very calming and relaxing, depicting the natural flow of the jellyfish. The different shades of blue in the water helps to create an environment of tranquility and serenity. The shades of purple in the jellyfish emphasize the sense of mystery.
SUAREZ Color + Rendering _ M.10
COLOR SCHEME- ANALOGOUS The color scheme is analogous, using darker tones of blue and lighter tints of purple and pink. The hues are taken from the cool side of the color wheel.

RENDERING
10%
30%
60% The lightest tint of purple is used as the dominant color. Placing it on the walls, floor, and ceiling makes it about 60% of the room. The two darker tones of purple are used as the secondary color. They are placed on the tables, soffit, and other accents to cover about 30% of the space. The blues are more saturated, making them perfect for the accent color. Using all three tones for the furniture pieces and rug ties the space together with about 10% coverage.

Elevator Lobby
PALLETTE
This space has an analogous color scheme with tones of brown, yellow, and orange. Brown is used in many hotel color schemes because it reminds people of the comfort of home. It is a calming color, which works well to balance the tones of yellow, which is a much more vibrant color. The yellow here is more towards gold, which represents wealth and luxury. Orange is a color of warmth and happiness and is often associated with holidays. COLOR + LINE: The first image shows the introduction of a new material that was placed in panels along the wall. This helps create a contrast in material and creates lines to help balance the proportions of the room. COLOR + SHAPE: Most of the elements in the room have a linear quality to them. The circular lamps above show a contrast to that rule and give the eye a break.

Restaurant
PALLETTE
The color scheme of the restaurant also follows an analogous color scheme because each of these colors are next to each other on the color wheel. Purple has an air of royalty to it. Red for the restaurant works well because it increases appetite. The yellow and orange tie this room to the rest of the hotel with the vibe of optimism and festivity. COLOR + LINE: In the first image you can see a variety of linear elements added to the entrance space in different colors and shapes. This created visual interest to the space.

LINE
ANALYSIS
The use of line going up from the main lobby vertically through the building acts as a detail to catch your eye. The lines create a contrast with the architectural elements around it. The consistency of the pattern going through the space may also act as a constant, or reference point, for people to orient themselves. The blue that is used for the seating and carpet of the conference room is a color that promotes concentration. It may even help keep employees calm during a presentation. The warm red and brown hues of the lobby create a more comfortable and homey feel.

My Country CUBA LOCATION Cuba is a small island in the Caribbean. Since it is surrounded by water, shades of blue are a big part of the culture. CLIMATE Cuba, as part of the Caribbean, has a very warm and humid climate. This is why the more saturated colors are preferred. ROOTS Many Cubans are from African decent. The bright reds associated with the culture are a reference to that. ARCHITECTURE The buildings in Cuba are all soft warm colors. In fact, Cubans are more likely to associate pink with buildings.
