3rd year spring project (in progress) rhino, v-ray, adobe
how can we create multifamily housing conducive for intergenerational families? This project explores idea of balancing togetherness and separateness in multigenerational housing. During increasingly busy lives, the support of a “village” becomes more important than ever, especially in double-income households, it is crucial to have reliable childcare and other means of support through family. This design seeks to create a home that is conducive to fostering healthy family relationships. This design is inspired by the courtyard typology, with a central large open-air space surrounded by enclosed volumes with full-sized pocket doors to extend the interior space into the exterior. The main open-air space connects a single “studio” to either a 2 or 3-bedroom unit, allowing for a level of privacy amongst the family. For instance, the senior or young adult may populate the studio space as they may have a different rhythm of lifestyle than the rest of the family. The studio and the exterior space are joined by the two kitchens and shared dining space. This allows for very intentional interaction between members of the family, fostering a sense of togetherness and support without forgoing individuality and independence.

The overall form of the project wraps around the site to enclose the inner playground area, creating a sense of safety. The single-loaded corridor allows for cross ventilation and a level of porosity in each unit so that inhabitants would feel connect to their environment and to their neighbors. The staggered faces of the units also allows for a level of privacy between different units, and ownership over their “front stoop.”

museum of contemporay japanese art little tokyo
the museum of contemporary japanese art is a space for the la community and the spread of Japanese culture in the heart of Little Tokyo. this project connects first Street and the elevated noguchi plaza, creating a passageway for museum visitors and other commuters. the street level is extremely porous, creating a welcoming space and local landmark for gathering. the street elevation is like a storefront exposing much of the program such as the bookstore, cafe, lobby, and installation spaces to share art with the street. the promenade allows for moments of visual connection and blurs the threshold between the gallery and the city. the promenade also allows for thresholds of pause and reflection. this back and forth of the city and gallery emphasizes that art belongs to everyone, and that art is not something that is hidden away and decontextualized, but something that we share and can relate to.

canopy: an urban escape
pershing square, downtown los angeles
1st year spring park redesign project rhino 7, adobe suite, twinmotion
the concept behind this park and cultural center is to create a playful space of exploration and community through organic forms and soft boundaries. this organic form offers a juxtaposition and escape from the rigid and harsh landscape of downtown la. the site is separated by long meandering walls to encourage promenades and exploration. the varied offset heights of the walls and the site offer different levels of privacy and seclusion. Inspired by the forms of mushrooms, the canopies provide shade and blur the boundaries of the programmatic elements.
