ABOUT ME
ABOUT ME
Hello, my name is Jessica Alvarez. I am a student currently pursuing a Masters in Interior Architecture at Florida International University. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and I am of Cuban and Spaniard decent. I was previously attending Miami-Dade College for PrePharmacy. It took two years of college to realize medicine is not what I wanted to do. I have a need to create and be inspired by everything around me, so I chose to enter the Interior Architecture program. So far it is everything I didn’t expect, but it is everything I wanted. I have a need to travel the world and experience different cultures and how they see the world. I love to paddleboard, go kayaking, and camp. I believe we are all connected to nature and I wish to bring that essence into my designs.

COLOR+THEORY Color theory is the study and practice of a set of principles used to understand the relationships amoung colors. Color theory has been studied for decades and new ideas and practies are continuously unraveled. The role color plays in art, design, and other allied professions is important to using color succesfully.

After school and prior to winning the Parc de La Villette competition, he built his reputation as a theorist through his writings and drawings. He established his practice in 1983 in Paris with the Parc de La Villette competition commission. In 1988, he opened Bernard Tschumi Architects (BTA), headquartered in New York City. Parc de Villette was built by Bernard Tschumi as a competition piece, which was to mark the vision of an era and to act upon the future economic and cultural development of a key area in Paris. In addition to the master plan, the project involved the design and construction of over 25 buildings, promenades, covered walkways, bridges, and landscaped gardens over a period of fifteen years. A system of dispersed “points”—the red enameled steel folies that support different cultural and leisure activities—is superimposed on a system of lines that emphasizes movement through the park.
PARC DE VILLETTE
Why the color red? This question was asked by many architects, but what they didn’t understand is it was part of a larger meaning. Bernard Tschumi came out with a book called RED IS NOT A COLOR this book has a short section in it talking about Parc De Villette and how the color was a conscious decision, but was apart from his concept. COLOR+FILM
The color scheme in the first image of Mia shows her with red lips. Red means love and passion, but in this particular scene the red on her lips shows who she is; mysterious, sultry, and dangerous. In this particular scene you see Vincent walking into the Wallace household where everything in visible sight is white, the rug, the lamp, and the couch, even Mias shirt is white. In this scene the color scheme makes a juxtaposition with Vincents black clothes and the white interior. This foreshadows that something bad will happen.

COLOR+FILM
This particular scene is all in red which is symbolizing the danger within the bar. The black shadows indicate to the viewer that the bar is closed and that there are shaddy deals being done.
JESSICA ALVAREZ
COLOR+FILM
In the beginning of this scene there is a contrast between the suits and the blue sky. Blue represents a sense of serenity and calmness, but when contrasted with the black suits this foreshadows the events that will proceed the scene. You can also see the difference between good and bad, ligiht and dark. This next scene is the following to the scene above, this is where they pan the camera to one of the side characters. The color of the couch behind him is red, which may resemble danger. The director also puts a yellow tint on the camera when shooting these scenes to show the watcher that these people may be dirty and lazy. In this scene you seen the colors black and green. This scene is very simple, the black will resemble the impurity, the hate, or disappointment that thesecharacters are feeling at the moment. The green symbolizes money, which in this scene they are coming to the other men for money.

COLOR+BALANCE

COLOR+BALANCE
Color intensity does not refer to lightness or darkness- that occurs from adding white or black to a color. Purity of hue, or chroma, results when a color is not influenced by other colors. Red in its purist form contains no traces or white, black, grey, or other color. However, once grey is added to a pure hue red, the intensity or brightness of the color begins to decrease. Value Contrast When working with color, adaquete contrast creates more stimulating results. The amounts of contrast desired depends the space tyoes and the design application needed. High contrast should be used for areas where safety is a concern, such s edges to differentiate between changes in level to avoid falls, or low contrast, such as medical waiting room, where limiting anxiety or tension is critical. Intensity Contrast
Size of Color Area When working with color, adaquete contrast creates more stimulating results. The amounts of contrast desired depends the space tyoes and the design application needed. High contrast should be used for areas where safety is a concern, such s edges to differentiate between changes in level to avoid falls, or low contrast, such as medical waiting room, where limiting anxiety or tension is critical.
Complementary colors are those colors that when placed next to one another intensify the other hue, making each to appear brighter. These colors are directly opposite each other on a color wheel. The colors provide to each other what they lack in themselves. Green complements red, since red contains no traces of the hue green. Orange compliments blue, and yellow complements violet for the same reasons. Hue Balance

COLOR+CAMERA
Ever since high schoolI have been fascinated with color and cameras. So I have been taking pictures nd editing them for years. At one point I wanted to become a famous nature photographer and possibly publish some photos in National Geographic. This is why most of my pictures you see are of nature I also find that food has such an array of color and the more colors you put into a recipe the better it tastes. When we were studying the psychology of color I came across a video that said a lot of directors use blue and orange in many films this is to balance out a persons skin. Well I realized in everyday life orange and blue are used. Almost every picture I took consisted of the two hues.

COLOR+RETAIL
FENDI opens its 5,400 square foot location in the Design District. Exposed brick walls and cement floors add a raw element to the store’s design in deliberate contrast with the opulence of textured design. The color-blocked façade and east exterior, a collaboration with designer and architect Johanna Grawunder, touts the brand’s commitment to the design world. The store will house the breadth of FENDI’s products including Men’s and Women’s RTW, fur, handbags, shoes and accessories.
JESSICA ALVAREZ
COLOR+RETAIL
FENDI does an amazing job with contrasting different textures. For example, is this image of the handbag wall. The entire store is mostly clothing, but with this wall they wanted to bring out the handbags and make them pop out at you. By using a different textured wall for the handbags themselves, they are able to make it more noticble instead of be mumuted into the background. CONTRAST OF TEXTURE
CONTRAST OF HUE As for the contrast of hue, you can clearly see it before you even walk into the store. The storefront is painted in the two complimentary colors of green and red, one to bring out the other. This makes the store stand out from a mile away.
JESSICA ALVAREZ
COLOR+RETAIL
The store has many contrasting values, you will see things that might be far away coming towards you because they are light and contrasted with a darker background. For example, the the display in the middle has a gold panel, which seems to be receding into the back amd the white display coming out at you. This is because a darker value will look as though it is receeding and the lighter one approaching.
CONTRAST OF VALUE
FOCAL POINT The focal point of the store is the wall with the handbags. This is done by moving the furniture so that you are lead to the wall. Also by using the contrast of value and texture to draw the customer to the wall. Light is added to accent the wall and make it look more golden.

DOMINANT ACCENT 1 ACCENT 2
These colors come from natures own color palette. I chose a subtle grey to be the most dominant color since it is the most nuetral color. Followed by a lighter grey. I chose the purple as my primary accent color because it gives the room a pop of color. Alongside is the shade of yellow which is usd for the furniture. I chose this for the furniture because it is also a neutral color.

COLOR+RENDERING
This color palette uses complimentary colors alongside neutrals. This is a great combination because the neutrals of the wall will bring in the attention towards the center of the room. Having the furniture as a tone of yellow will contrast and compliment the purple hue of the wall that goes up to the ceiling. Towards the window I chose to use the tint of yellow to bring in more sunlight while the shade of purple is used as the carpet color to draw legnth to the room.

COLOR+HOSPITALITY
Each hotel and resort is uniquely inspired by its destination, mixing cutting-edge design with local influences and creating a place to play or work by day or to mix and mingle in high-energy spaces by night. So, while every hotel is unmistakably a W hotel, each has its own personality that is brought to life by our collaborators who are always on the cusp of what’s new and next in design, music and fashion.

LOBBY
Effectivness of Colour The contrast between the white and the dark brown colours make different elements of the room stand out. For example, the floor is a dark brown, whereas the furniture and tables are white creating a focal point towards the loungin area.

Texture The W hotel does an amazing job with combining different textures and not having them feel overwhelming. This is done by keeping the colour palette neutral. You can see a threshold between the lounging area and the area a customer would take while staying at the hotel by the texture on the walls an the floor. In the hall way the granite walls contrast with the white designed tiled floors. You then step into the lounge area you and you have the dark wood floors combined with a metal wire back frame. The element that brings these two together are the textured column walls.

BLISS SPA
JESSICA ALVAREZ
Effectivness of Colour The colours used in Bliss spa in The W Hotel are different tones of blue and green. This brings a feeling of serenity and calmness to the customer when walking into the spa. Texture Bliss spa has very smooth texture resembling the stress free environent. Colours like green are to resemble inner peace and tranquility and well as a connection to nature. The blue hues are there to send a psychological wave of relaxation to the person entering the spa sp once they are encountered with these colours they eel peace and tranquility.

WORKPLACE
COLOR+WORKPLACE
ONE workplace uses neutral elements such as the the white ceramic desks and furniture, wooden floor and ceilings, and black accents. Along with the black acent are the three colors used variously around the wokplace, these are, purple, green, and blue. All of these colors are high contrasting colors, but do well within the neutral environment. ONE workplace has an industrial yet modern touch to it. Showcasing the air ducts and light fixtures on the ceiling, while keeping it bright and modern on the floor with furniture and color. JESSICA ALVAREZ

COLOR+CULTURE
Red is the color of passion and excitement. It has both positive and negative associations — danger, love and excitement. Red is often used in Spains culture because we are very passionate people. You can see this color being used in the run of the bulls and also in the dresses of dancers. JESSICA ALVAREZ
Green refers to nature, the environment and protection of environmental causes, such as “green business” or “green household cleansers.” Green is also associated with Christmas, when used in combination with red. It is also the symbol of progress — green means “go” — but can also represent of envy.
Pink is the color of femininity and is used to signify the birth of a daughter. It also represents sweetness (it is often the color used for cake or candy shops), childhood or fun.
Yellow is connected to mourning in Spaniard culture. This can be seen as respect for the deceased person because the yellow is almost like gold, symbolizing

Yellow, corresponding with earth, is considered the most beautiful and prestigious color. The Chinese saying, Yellow generates Yin and Yang, implies that yellow is the center of everything.
Generally green is associated with health, prosperity, and harmony. Separately, green hats are associated with infidelity and used as an idiom for a cuckold.
White, corresponding with metal, represents gold and symbolizes brightness, purity, and fulfillment. White is also the color of mourning. It is associated with death and is used predominantly in funerals in Chinese culture.
Red, corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. Red is found everywhere during Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings. A red envelope is a monetary gift which is given in Chinese society during holiday or special occasions.

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
The theory of color is one that must be learned in order to create a successful living environment. This semester I have learned a lot more then what I knew about color. Taking how the contrast in value or even texture can influence a space. We’ve have learned the psychology and of color and how to work within a given space. We have seen how light, texture, and color interact with one another to bring together a hospital, workplace, and home. I am also grateful for the knowledge earned in studying about the colors of my own culture and how different colors mean different things in various culture. Together with all of this knowledge gained I hope to bring together a space and not be scared of using color because at the end of the day what is a room with no emotion?
