Concerns over the three most common psychoactive medications Finding the right course of treatment for mental health disorders takes time, energy and a variety of resources. Furthermore, dual diagnoses and severity of the diseases dictate the types of medications required to treat the whole person. Although all medications must be reviewed by the FDA for safety, persons with mental health disorders possess a higher risk for complications, crises and even suicide as a result of mental health treatment with medications. In the past, many physicians and family members experienced concern and turmoil over giving potentially harmful medications to persons experiencing severe depression, anxiety or event thoughts of suicide. In order to understand these dangers, you need to understand the risks of some of the most common medications used in a mental health treatment plan and dual diagnosis treatment. • Seroquel (Quetiapine) Seroquel is commonly used for the treatment of bipolar disorder and in combination with other medications to treat major depressive disorder in adults and children above the age of 10. However, the newest extended release version of Seroquel is not to be used in children under the age of 18 for any reason. Furthermore, this medication should not be used to treat older adults suffering from dementia as an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death. • Lithium: Oldest and most commonly prescribed psychoactive medication Lithium has been used for decades for the treatment of mental health conditions. Lithium works by changing the way that sodium affects the mind and body. Lithium is used to treat the hyperactivity and excitement of manic periods of bipolar disorder, or more commonly diagnosed as manic depressive disorder. Some of the most common symptoms of mania include inhibited judgment, self-deprivation of sleep, anger, rushed speech or general hyperactivity. Furthermore, mental health professionals can use lithium for the treatment of depression, and in some cases, schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder.
