In 2005, Dr . Laurence M . Westreich of the New York University School of Medicine stated that alcohol use disorders (AUDs ) often affect the course of mental illness . Westreich further explained , “Alcohol can both cause and exacerbate symptoms and must be treated concurrently with the psychiatric illness .�


How does co-occurring alcohol abuse and substance use disorders occur? According to National Institute on Drug Abuse , as many as six of every 10 people with a substance use disorder (SUD ) also suffer from co -occurring mental illness . NIDA suggests considering the following :


âž” Drug abuse can cause a mental illness âž” Mental illness can lead to drug abuse âž” Drug abuse and mental disorders are both caused by other common risk factors


Treating comorbid alcohol and mental health disorders The prevalence and severity of comorbid alcohol and mental health disorders demonstrates the need for integrated dual diagnosis programs , offering rehab for alcohol abuse as well as mental rehabilitation services . The need for an integrated treatment approach that identifies , evaluates , and simultaneously treats both disorders is crucial for successful treatment , according to the NIDA .


In Primary Psychiatry , Westreich also stressed the crucial importance of treating both the alcohol and mental health disorders simultaneously , saying that treatment should “strive towards an integrated approach . �
