Dual diagnosis: Entangling the knot of addiction and mental health issues Addiction is often related to other struggles the individual is undergoing. Substance abuse is twice as likely to occur in those with anxiety and mood disorders. Addiction research indicates that substance abuse is often an attempt to “self medicate” the emotional upheavals that are a result of undiagnosed or untreated mental illness. Dual diagnosis treatment involves strategies for managing the addiction problem, as well as mental health treatment for underlying conditions. Mental illness and addiction The term “dual diagnosis” was coined to describe coexisting issues of mental illness and addiction that occur together. Over time, addiction experts began to notice how frequently mental health conditions occurred along with addiction problems.
