Mental health treatment and homelessness: A growing trend The number of homeless people in the U.S. is a shocking statistic that often goes overlooked. At least 3.5 million Americans are estimated to be homeless at any given time, and 39 percent of this total represents homeless children. The homeless population is at an increased risk for complications or even death from inadequate mental health treatment or substance abuse issues. One of the reasons for the increase in homelessness and ripple effect of substance abuse and mental health disorders is in part is due to the lack of available and affordable mental health treatment. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that 20 to 25 percent of all homeless people in the U.S. battle with a severe mental health disorder. In addition, the stress of coping with a mental illness causes problems in social relationships which can result in loss of employment, support systems and even housing.
