SPECIALTY / MIXED-USE Daufuskie Island Retreat : Learning Kitchen The overall concept of the Daufuskie Island Creative Retreat is to harness and evoke inspiration & creativity within it’s visitors. Positioned on the remote key off of South Carolina, Daufuskie Island boasts an untouched oasis of lush forests and calm coastlines. Visitors can also be inspired by the natural culture of the island. Daufuskie has a rich history of culture, tradition, and food, which demand to be preserved with dignity, rather than exploited or commercialized. Therefore, the spaces throughout the Creative Retreat needed to echo the current Daufuskie vernacular.

GULLAH CULTURE Daufuskie Island Originally from West Africa, the Gullah people were brought here as slaves to work the rice fields in South Carolina & Georgia Low-country. They harvested rice, indigo, oysters, & cotton, not only for personal use, but also for commerce. The island was separated completely from land, & the slaves were separated from owners, “the result is a rich culture with a unique form of spoken English that maintains African sonorities... and is very similar to creole.
GULLAH FOOD Real Southern Food The Gullah people were selfsufficient; They were hunters, fishers, gardeners & farmers, raising animals to put food on the table. Food is part of their tight-knit community, coming to the aid of anyone in need. They have respect for their elders, & family values is of the utmost importance. Because of this, their African origins remain ingrained in their daily living, passed down orally from generation to generation. A Gullah meal includes sea food, rice, corn, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, collards, okra, eggplant, beans, & peas.

RESIDENTIAL / PRIVATE
1974 AirStream Overlander : Redesign Florida Natives Neil & Shelly Short live in an all original 27 foot 1974 AirStream International Overlander with their two dogs. The space does not suit their needs nor their style, so they have asked for a redesigned space which accommodates to their working lifestyle. The final designed space incorporates the two opposing styles, needs, & habits of both clients. Shelly prefers a rustic, natural, Americana aesthetic, while Neil prefers a more modern style. This means a clean & simple design with personal touches & detailing to reflect their personalities. Relaxing & work conducive, the space caters to both Shelly & Neil respectively.
DESIGN STATS Area : 189 square feet Location : Anywhere Year Built : 1974 Architect : AirStream Status : Renovating
