1 | PERSONAL STATEMENT
My approach to design is grounded in giving expression to the local landscape, cultural identity - of the client and of the place, and to the structure of the building or space itself.
I believe that we should strive to produce buildings that are as explainable as any other element of the environment.
Furthermore, I believe that in the pursuit of sustainability, we must first provide real value through socially flexible and relevant design that will remain relevant over time. Then we can address efficiency, high performance materials etcetera. We must first justify the creation of a permanent/ long-term structure in terms of its continued use over time.
Lastly, I believe that the best design results are achieved through a collaborative procoess, in which the client, designers and consultants are all empowered to contribute meaningfully to a cohesive outcome.
I am committed to on-time, on-budget execution of inspiring ideas through attention to detail, practical solutions and open communication.

Meng,

To whom it may concern, I am writing to provide a personal and professional reference for Jessica Clare Graham, who was employed at Base Architecture from November 2006 until October 2011. Jessica began her career at Base as a second year architecture student and has always shown initiative in rising to new challenges, starting with her first renovation project for which she completed sketch design through to building approval documentation within her first three months of employment (Taylor Residence at Sandgate). Since then, Jessica went onto complete more complex residential and commercial projects, collaborating with myself, external consultants, including structural and hydraulic engineers, builders, town planners, surveyors, joiners and other trades and representatives from various suppliers. Over the years, Jessica has cultivated close working relationships and has always maintained up to date and informed on the latest products and materials and the companies a nd people who supply them. At the time of her departure from Base Architecture, Jessica had recently completed detailed sketch design through to construction documentation for the following projects: • Warran Road – A 2 storey house at Coolum, whose brief was to facilitate use of the building as one cohesive house for large family gatherings, as well as two self-‐contained living environments, with the owner residing in the upper level and potential for holiday rental of the lower level. Jessica worked closely with the client in refining the structural, spatial and detailed sketch design, and also worked closely with Westera Partners consulting engineers to explore structural options which optimized efficiency and cost, whilst remaining true to the original concept and ideas. From this point, Jessica documented the project for Council approval, building approval, tender, and construction, coordinating scheduling and construction detailing with the client and builder. She also initiated and managed the tender process, which was quite extensive due to the detailed level of documentation provided, facilitating meetings between client and builder, through to the signing of the contract. Whilst Base Architecture did not administer the contract for this project, Jessica did play a role in solving on-‐site issues, providing detailed 3D models, hand-‐drawn details and verbal advice on some issues that arose on site. • Yates Avenue – A 3 storey house at Ashgrove, which, based on its elevated location, aimed to take maximum advantage of panoramic city views, whilst providing privacy to the family of four. Jessica played a role in this project from the sketch design phase, which was extensive, due to a heavily revised budget early in the design process. Almost 100 sqm was successfully removed from the original design scheme, whilst retaining all views and spatial function. Furthermore, Jessica facilitated negotiation regarding the structural design of the house, ensuring that cost efficiency was further optimized in this manner.

Further to her role as a Graduate of Design, Jessica played a vital role in the strategy and management of our marketing, graphic design and events held at our practice, including a seminar entitled “Renovations and New Builds” in August 2010 and an exhibition entitled “Another Face of Base” in December 2009. Both of these events were successful and attracted diverse attendance as well as media coverage by online and print media. Throughout her time at Base, Jessica engaged in the broader aspects of the business, by always putting forward her ideas, whether they be in relation to marketing and corporate identity, participation in design competitions, events, or design process and client management and interaction. Jessica has a willingness to learn and apply knowledge to tasks. When given a directive, she can deliver results above expectations. In the past 5 years Jess has experienced the growth of Base Architecture and has contributed both architecturally, personally and to the overall business. In summary, I have no hesitation in recommending Jessica for employment in the industry, Regards,

QLD X-‐Ray – Base Architecture has a longstanding relationship with QLD X-‐Ray and in early 2011 when we were asked to review the company’s existing facilities and suggest a design concept for new practices, I selected Jessica to lead this project. Jessica prepared a comprehensive presentation, which was delivered at the QLD X-‐Ray Annual General Meeting in January 2011. On the basis of this presentation, Base Architecture were engaged to complete refurbishments of the Mater, Mater Womens, Saint Vincent’s, Mount Gravatt, Cleveland, Mackay, Logan Central, Browns Plains and Hope Island practices. The projects varied in complexity and budget, and in collaboration with the doctors, physicists, marketing and project management staff of QLD X-‐Ray, Jessica designed the refurbishment of the Mater Practice, which was to be the first “test” of the concept previously put forward. Managing the competing interests of various stakeholders involved, whilst also competing with the high expense of construction work in a hospital facility, Jessica saw this project through to the signing of a contract. Jessica was the main point of contact for QLD X-‐Ray on these projects and showed skill and leadership in design and project management. Jessica further completed designs for Saint Vincent’s Hospital, which were implemented and began sketch design on Hope Island, whilst also managing the implementation of the design strategy by other staff members on Browns Plains and Mackay practices.

Similarly, I strive to produce architecture that embodies an authentic connection to place - from site, to city, to country and landscape. I believe that good design must stand up to the scrutiny of its’ relevance, expression and contribution to the place it is situated.
I believe that architecture and design should originate from a true understanding and appreciation of the living systems within which they exist. This includes the natural environment, social systems such as families, businesses, and local communities. It is no coincidence that architecture and on a larger scale, cities, become living systems themselves, interacting physically and socially with the broader system of which they are a part.
To me, “quality” in architecture, as in life, doesn’t necessarily refer to expense or rarity of materials or products. What I understand quality architecture to be is the thoughtful design and construction of space. Space that captures and embodies quality ideas about living, working and interacting with the world around us. Quality design process considers quality of life, light, ideas and space. Through a thoughtful synthesis of these ideas, quality is achieved through documentation of the idea in such a way that it may be thoughtfully executed/ constructed.

Far too often, we see structurally sound buildings demolished because they were designed purely upon the basis of a passing trend, providing no meaningful connection to the people who use the facility and therefore rapidly becoming socially obsolete. I have come to believe that in order for architecture to stand the test of time, it must in some way inspire. As architects we must facilitate meaningful social connections and express the culture of the individual, family, community, place with which we are working.

To whom it may concern I have had the pleasure of working with Ms Jessica (Jess) Clare Graham of 3/125 Moreton Street, New Farm QLD 4005, during the design and development of my home on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland during 2011. Jessica was working for Base Architecture, The Grange Brisbane QLD 4051, while concurrently completing the final year of a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) at Queensland University of Technology. She is now studying a Masters in Architecture. My home is now in the final stages of completion, and I would like to express what a pleasure it was working with Jess, both on a personal and professional level. Jess’s personal characteristics also make her well suited to this field. She is welcoming, friendly, empathic and considerate no matter what requests are made of her. I was always made to feel that I was a valued client. Although in the early stages of her career, Jessica has a strongly developed professional character. She knows her subject well, is excellent at research, has the practical and technical skills to support the brief given to her, is a great listener, responds to queries quickly and efficiently and always reflected a well organized process.
• • • • • • •
The process of translating ideas into reality: I had a very specific design brief which Jess was able to translate into concepts with ease; Structural negotiation for cost saving: Jess implemented an inverted truss in the upper ceiling to enable a “raked “ look, without the use of heavy steel girders; Cleverly reduced floor-space to save costs without compromising the design or spatial qualities of rooms; Applied structural innovation on the upper roof to prevent the use of an oversized box gutter to save cost and minimize leakage; Developed appropriate 3D imaging to enable me as the client, to better visualize staircase detailing, colour choices, and a box light design idea that I had, for the stairwell. Detail resolution in the roofline, stairs, ceiling shape, and drainage on the upper deck floor. Development of a process to “image” the spaces and detail the components to be used, so that I could better understand this process.
In closing I would like to emphasize Jess’s well developed skill in teamwork. She has an easy manner which stimulates cohesive collaboration and creates great synergy during a design process. I have come to the end of a wonderful experience which was enriched by the team at Base Architecture but specifically by Jess who was at all times a welcoming, supportive staff member, who was my contact and designer throughout the process. I would be willing to speak on Jess’s behalf and would highly recommend her to any future employer.

“It is my pleasure to offer a reference for Ms Jessica Graham, whose work we experienced whilst engaged by Base Architecture as an architectural assistant in 2010. Jessica was delegated the task of compiling and executing the construction documentation for our house renovation project and had a role in document coordination with authorities, as well as resolving issues during the construction phase with both engineer and builder.
Jessica has been professional and interested in her interactions with us. She has shown creativity and skill commensurate with her experience during the project and I have no doubt that she would apply herself to new endeavours in the future. -- Mark Lai (Owner)
