INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MAJOR

ACCOUNTING MAJOR

In today’s global economy, all businesses–whether large or small– are affected by international competitors and global events. Success in the global marketplace will depend on the capabilities of managers to understand the structures and processes that underlie international business. The international business major is designed to provide this understanding and to develop the requisite competencies of global business leaders.

The curriculum completed by School of Accountancy graduates provides all accounting and business courses required to sit for the CPA examination (generally referred to as being CPA ready). Successful students can choose to complete the 150 semester hour requirement by double majoring as an undergraduate student or by enrolling in a one-year graduate program of their choice.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAJOR BUSINESS PRELAW MAJOR The business prelaw major recognizes the business and economic emphasis of the practice of law and also provides the breadth of training and philosophical background that is conducive to success in law school. ENTREPRENEURSHIP MAJOR Success in entrepreneurship requires a broad base of conceptual knowledge, personal skills, and competencies. The required courses ensure a variety of rich developmental experiences that can include applied learning, case analysis, research projects, teambased active learning projects, and guest speakers, in addition to traditional classroom lectures and discussions. This major places a strong emphasis on written and oral communications skills, teamwork, and personal initiative. FINANCE MAJOR The finance major prepares students for the dynamic environment of corporate finance and financial services. Coursework is available in the fields of financial management, commercial banking, financial institutions, security markets, and risk and insurance.

2

The management information systems (MIS) curriculum is designed to develop skills in the analysis, design, and implementation of business information systems. Our program teaches students to look at businesses holistically as an integrated system of people, business processes and information technology. We move beyond “techie” skills such as programming to emphasize a functional understanding of technologies and how they can promote business strategies. MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP MAJOR Today’s dynamic and highly competitive businesses require energetic and capable leaders who can add value and create high performance at all levels of enterprise responsibility. The major in Management and Strategic Leadership is designed to create the foundations of knowledge and personal capability requisite to lifelong professional learning and career-long success in business leadership. The required courses ensure a variety of rich developmental experiences that can include community service learning, individual leadership and emotional intelligence assessments, case analysis, research projects, team-based active learning projects, and guest speakers, in addition to traditional classroom lectures and discussions.

MARKETING MAJOR

Certificates

Marketing is the lifeline of any organization. It links the organization with its customers and is vital not only to the survival of the organization, but also to the maintenance of the free enterprise system. The marketing curriculum is designed to give students both a broad overview of marketing knowledge and experience. Foundational marketing courses include: professional selling, marketing research, consumer behavior and marketing strategy.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CERTIFICATE

SPORT MANAGEMENT MAJOR Sport management is an applied field of study based on the integration of the special nature of sport endeavors and management theory, and administrative principles applied to sport involvement. Sport management includes any combination of skills related to planning, organizing, leading and evaluating within the context of an organization or department whose primary product or service is related to sport. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science and a minor in business.

The objective of the certificate program in entrepreneurship is to expose non-Bachelor in Business Administration (nonBBA) students to entrepreneurship and to cultivate an “entrepreneurial mindset” within these students. A primary focus of the program is allowing the student to tailor the program to their individual program of study. FINANCIAL PLANNING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM This program prepares students for a career in personal financial planning. Students completing this program will be eligible to sit for the national CFP® Certification Examination administered by the CFP Board. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE Students learn the basic issues involved with international business, while maintaining flexibility in adapting the program to various areas of interest. This certificate program consists of fifteen semester hours including four required courses, one elective course, and completion of one approved international experience. SALES CERTIFICATE The sales certificate differentiates tomorrow's sales leaders with real sales readiness training in the classroom, fostering self-discovery, and providing professional development. The program is for undergraduates in any major who want to develop knowledge and skills in professional selling.

APPLIED LEARNING EXPERIENCE I have been extremely impressed with the quality of student I have interacted with, interviewed and hired from the Sales Centre at Ohio University. The level of maturity and professionalism continues to exceed expectations making the Sales Centre a great resource for finding future stars.” James Brown, Vice President U.S. Grocery Sales at J.M. Smuckers Co.

The CoB Centers of Excellence At the College of Business, our overall philosophy is one of application – to leverage experience with learning. It’s not enough to learn in the classroom; students must put knowledge to work. One way students are able to apply skills is through a number of innovative centers that provide a rich, hands-on experience for students.

The Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre The Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre is a partnership between business faculty and successful business executives to provide a solid initial grounding in the curriculum. The Professional Sales Advisory Board (PSAB) works to ensure the Sales Centre remains on the cutting-edge of changes in business practices, including a strong focus on innovative and entrepreneurial thinking in sales. The Sales Centre offers a Sales Certificate for undergraduate students in any major who seek understanding about professional selling and development. Completion of this 28-hour credit program is required for the certificate, which is officially recognized at graduation and on transcripts. The certificate program provides professional selling and problem-solving training, and the skills development needed for success in sales and related fields. This selective organization provides practical experience helping run the Centre as a small “business.” Initiatives outside the classroom include: • An assessment strategy that allows students to understand their personality preferences, know their strengths, and learn which type of sales job fits them best while in college • Two cross-cultural, communication competency workshops during the school year that teach students how to work and succeed in today’s diverse workplace • Formation of the SalesCats—a team that competes in collegiate sales competitions around the country; SalesCats have consistently finished in the top 10 of 64 schools at the National Collegiate Sales Competition

BUSINESS CLUSTER Rather than teach core subjects as isolated units, the Business Cluster combines traditionally independent classes — management, marketing, management information systems and finance — into one integrated class taught by a team of professors. Working in teams, students solve authentic business problems and get a taste of what it is like to work in the real world.

Center for Sports Administration Forty years ago when the idea for an academic program built around sports administration came to fruition, one could hardly predict the level of complexity that the sports industry has become today. Through the years, the sports industry has continued to evolve, becoming increasingly global and more complex in its approach to business. As such, Ohio University’s Center for Sports Administration was founded to serve as a resource to solve the increasingly difficult issues facing the sports industry. • Offers a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management • One of the top three programs in the nation, according to Sports-Management.com • All faculty are veterans of the Sports Industry • Students from Europe, Pan-Asia, and Africa offer global perspectives on sports • Local hands-on opportunities with Ohio University Bobcats (Mid-American Conference) and Southern Ohio Copperheads (Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) • 1,200+ graduates in key positions in intercollegiate and professional sports provide multiple internship and career opportunities around the state and the U.S.

www.sportsad.ohio.edu The greatest benefit for students is that it challenges them with very realistic business issues, like they are going to see in their careers, where there is no certain answer.” Dr. Gary Coombs, Interim Director of the Management Department

Student Organizations Students have multiple chances to put their leadership skills to the test, with more than 25 student organization and practicum opportunities. Here’s a sample: • The Select Leadership Development Program: A unique program that accelerates personal growth, professional development, and leadership identity of high-potential students using principle-based leadership practices. Through the process of discovery, application and evolution, students develop skills to differentiate themselves as leaders. • SOX 404 Fellows Program: Students put their accounting knowledge to work auditing the accounts of the Ohio University Foundation. SOX Fellows document existing controls, determine sufficiency of internal controls in place, and assess the effectiveness of those internal controls. • The Student Fixed-Income Management Group: This student-run management group helps manage the $2 million fixed-income securities fund for the Ohio University Foundation. • The Ohio University Student Equity Management Group: This student-run group manages a $2.1 million equity fund for the Ohio University Foundation. The student managers research companies for a few weeks and present their 20-page findings to the group of about 25 other student managers to make decisions regarding investments. The OUSEMG has consistently outperformed the S&P Index since its inception.

We encourage you to schedule your on-campus recruiting dates if you have not done so already, as dates fill quickly. Please contact Christi Lee, recruiting coordinator, at leec@ohio.edu for assistance. • Prescreen (closed) and Open Scheduling Options: We offer the option of prescreening candidates for interviews or having an open schedule. You may also conduct pre-nights and/or informational sessions prior to your visit. • Information Sessions/ Pre-Night Sessions: In an effort to increase their organization’s presence on campus, many employers elect to hold either a pre-night session the evening before their scheduled on-campus interviews or an information session weeks in advance of their visit. Offer and Hiring Information It is critical to our outcomes measures to receive offer and relevant employment data of newly hired students in a timely manner. Information is kept in aggregate form. We ask that you supply hiring and salary data to Tracy Corrigan by email at: corrigat@ohio.edu. Your cooperation is appreciated in keeping us informed of your employment decisions.

Full-Time or Internship Offers For all full-time or internship offers made in the fall, we suggest giving the student until November 1—or a minimum of three weeks after an offer is made—to make their decision to accept or decline so they may participate in fall recruiting. For companies interviewing in the spring, we recommend giving the students until March 15, or three weeks after an offer is made. Students are urged to notify employers immediately of offers they do not plan to accept. Reneging on previously accepted offers is considered a serious breach of our College recruiting policies, and such situations receive immediate attention.
