PROJECT 01. Type Poster Series
THESIS
PROJECT 01.
For our first project, we were given the task of designing a poster for 6 different typefaces of our choice, I chose Baskerville, Futrua, Didot, Garamond, Gill Sans and Helvetica. My favorite typeface out of all 6 is Helvetica, not just because of the documentary, but because of it’s simplistic, timeless. I have used this typeface in almost every typographic design in my beginning Graphic Design class, as well as Type 233. I also tried to expand my interest in type and choose typefaces of different categories and styles. Didot, Baskerville and Garamond are all serif fonts that have more of an old-style origin. Another task of the assignment was to relate the origin and history of the typeface to the design of the poster. My color choices for this series was influential on a pop-art feel, which is one of my favorite time periods of art. Each poster was given a single color, correlated with either black or white text and background. I kept the color system simple, because I really wanted to expand on the design concept for each one, making them each individual, but working together as a collective series.

THESIS For our second project, we were asked to compose a typeface out of a structured grid system already provided in the project outline. We were to choose between a circle grid structure or a square grid. I chose to use the square grid, because I wanted to create a typeface that was more rigid and structurally sound. My inspiration for this project was an old-school game boy feel, or a ‘digital’ theme. I named this font ‘Digital Download’ because of the inspiration behind it. This project has helped me to practice working with a grid structure to create a typeface, which may become helpful with future projects.

For our third project, type as image, we were asked to pic an author, song writer, screen play writer, poet, or someone notably quotable to create a portrait out of type. The author I chose was J.K. Rowling, because of her famous Harry Potter series, along with her amazing ability to bring this mystical world to life. I have read all 8 books in the series, seen every movie on opening night, and even visited Harry Potter World in Orlando, FL. As a big fan and avid reader of the author, I chose to create a portrait of Harry from one of the more recent films, because I think it portrays him in the way most people, even if they are not fans of the movie, know his character to be. I chose the typeface Baskerville because it reminds me a lot of the old-english feel of the wizarding world described in the books and movies. I chose to use various weights and sizes of the typeface in order o emphasize shadow and important features, such as his eyebrows and hair. There was also a lot of layering to show texture and darkness, which also aided in making this portrait a recognizable figure. For the background, I chose to use a larger size of the typeface, and fade the grey tone a bit here and there. This took away from the background, and let the viewer focus more on the figure in the right. Last, I chose to add the quote ”Every great wizard in history has started out as nothing more than what we are now, students, If they can do it, why not us?” I chose this quote because I think it correlates well with college students and our ‘starting out’ in a field that we all have a lot of passion for.

THESIS For our fourth project, we were given three different companies to choose from, then create a logo. This logo was to be mostly type-driven. I chose the company, Vroom Cycles, a motorcycle company and chose to base it in Las Vegas, with a more retro themed bike selection. I started out on dafont.com looking for fonts that represented the theme well. I found one that connected capital letters and began to construct clipping paths around it. After that, I chose a more simple sans serif font, more weighted to emphasize the motorcycles and Las Vegas portion of the logo. I decided to use heierarchy and make Las Vegas the third smallest headline in the logo. For the business card design, I wanted to showcase the brands style by using a tag line, “How ‘bout that ride in?” from the movie The Hangover. I used the companies name, ‘vroom’ as a pattern to imitate a tire mark on the back of the business card. For the front, I used a pop of color that I had in mind, along with a few shapes for design choice. Over all, this project was by far one of my favorites I’ve worked on all semester. I liked the company I was working with and had a solid idea right from the start, which made executing design a whole lot easier for me.

DESIGNERS STATEMENT For project 3, Form as Identity, we worked with a pre-established symbol that could be used in a publishing field, as it has elements of a pencil and heart design co-existing together. The name of the publishing company we determined in class came to be, Paper Heart Publishing. After working with deconstructing this logo and applying 6 different adjectives to each transformation, a new symbol developed. This new symbol resembles that of two mountain shapes, along with a half circle, resembling a sunset. This new symbol reminds me of a ‘Patagonia’, mountain-esque inspired brand that could deal with hiking, skiing or just the mountainous landscape in general. When I began to deconstruct the symbol, I tried to keep in mind a stop-motion feel, as our final iteration of the transformation had to flow naturally with no jumps in between. Working previously with GIF projects in the past, once grasping this concept, became much more simple for me to comprehend. Although keeping in mind this transformation process, applying the adjectives to every slide became more difficult. While learning to bring these two concepts together cohesively, in turn morphed my final iteration and final symbol. I believe this iteration and symbol are successful because of the smooth transition and weight of the final mountain symbol. I am happy with how this project has evolved since the first iteration and believe this symbol is very versatile and cohesive and could do a fine job representing numerous brands under its category.
