JEREMY SCOTT

He started his life on a farm outside Kansas City, before hitchhiking his way to Beverly Hills in Hollywood. After studying Fashion Design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, the American fashion designer has shown at all major Fashion Weeks and has appeared in numerous publications (i.D, Dazed & Confused, NYLON). After launching his label onto the Paris catwalk in 1997, the epitome of cool has designed an array of influential clothing and has awakened stimulating concepts, in a way which predecessors of his could only dream of achieving. Having been described as, “An example of lowbrow culture transformed into high art” due to his conceptual pieces that take elements of streetwear, graphic cartoon prints and abstract shapes, which then change every season to embrace an impulse of what he is feeling at that precise point. Highlights include the Bone to be Wild S/S 2010 collection (Wilma Flinstone meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Eat the Rich (A/W 2006), that saw a snickers bar sweater dress and prints now made accessible by the Lazy Oaf Store on Carnaby Street. Perhaps the most recognizable would be his collaboration with Adidas, with the gangster/angelic-wing design on the hip-hop hi-trainer being an international bestseller. Jeremy Scott is a designer who has his own brilliant mind and is not afraid of mixing the futuristic elements of tribal sportswear, ferociously bright colors and an accurate ideology of what is happening in today’s society. 3

AUTISM SPEAKS

WHAT IS AUTISM? Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Autism Speaks continues to fund research on effective methods for earlier diagnosis, as early intervention with proven behavioral therapies can improve outcomes. Increasing autism awareness is a key aspect of this work and one in which our families and volunteers play an invaluable role. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

WHAT CAUSES AUTISM? First and foremost, we now know that there is no one cause of autism just as there is no one type of autism. Over the last five years, scientists have identified a number of rare gene changes, or mutations, associated with autism. A small number of these are sufficient to cause autism by themselves. Most cases of autism, however, appear to be caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development. The clearest evidence of these autism risk factors involves events before and during birth. They include advanced parental age at time of conception (both mom and dad), maternal illness during pregnancy and certain difficulties during birth, particularly those involving periods of oxygen deprivation to the baby’s brain. It is important to keep in mind that these factors, by themselves, do not cause autism. Rather, in combination with genetic risk factors, they appear to modestly increase risk.

“JEREMY SCOTT/KUMARI/PG 2” Jeremy Scott has gone above and beyond with his spring-summer collection. Jeremy Scott’s eponymous line is an example of high art. Often more conceptual, the designs change drastically every season with the evolution of Scott’s whimsy. The designers quirk and creativity behind his art, and his ability to stimulate the visual senses is what captivates his audience. Fashion can be conceited, it can even be patronizing, and Scott’s designs are refreshing. The collection is filled with short, tight, sugary designs, rarely looser than second skin and longer than barely there. It is a fifties-style spectacle one would expect from the American designer - think neon green crocodile skirts, skintight scribble-covered cutout dresses and emblazoned tops. In keeping with Scott’s other collections, the prints and the patterns are a part of the silhouette and fabrics; using mostly jersey, washed denim and leather. Jeremy Scott will also be donating $25,000 to Autism Speaks in order to help and support the organization. Autism Speaks is an autism advocacy organization in the United States that sponsors autism research and conducts awareness and outreach activities aimed towards families, governments, and the public. Every year, the number of kids diagnosed with ASD grows and the rate appears to be accelerating. Autism diagnosis is hard enough and it’s also very expensive. Therapy, clinics, medicines; the cost adds up even for simple changes to everyday living. Autism speaks is a great organization that creates awareness and helps people take charge of ASD diagnosis. After getting to know the organization better, Scott has decided to make a donation to people challenged with autism and help in any way he can. Contact Michelle Walter for tickets (646) 457-7834 or check out jeremyscott.com for more information. General admission tickets cost $150 and VIP tickets cost $500.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 10TH, 2013 583 PARK AVENUE NEW YORK, NEW YORK VISIT WWW.JEREMYSCOTT.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

THE

LOOKS The show, titled ‘Teenagers from Mars,’ featuring Jeremy Scott’s S/S 14 collection will unveil a bubblegum-pink leather jacket, leopard prints and frequent permutations of a cartoon martians face, to name a few. The show will begin with the beep of a technical disturbance, and the first outfit, an abbreviated suit, leather briefs, leather cardigan jacket and matching leather booties all in the color-bar stripe of old television test patterns. There will also be lots of perforations, extraneous zippers and color-blocking with pastel colors and black. There’s a nostalgia of the late 50s early 60s, but the collection is still a bit sinister. Scott re-envisioned the Beat Generation with the help of an icon from a different era: pop-artist Kenny Scharf, who contributed three prints to the collection.
