Editorial. One day a classmate told me that she had never met anyone before, who is as happy and positive as I am every day. She said that it gave her energy and motivation to become a more optimistic person as well. I thought this was the biggest compliment I had ever received, and it brightened up my day to the maximum. I think it is great to give, but also to receive compliments now and then, it just makes everybody more happy and it doesn’t cost much effort. It’s kind of like flirting, but then with any individual. I think a little compliment can make everybody’s day, a better day! But who am I? I am Jessica, 21 years old, a third years Leisure management student, and currently finishing my minor; Creative Industries. For this minor, I had to create a personal magazine with a personal brand. Since people described me as; happy, optimistic, positive, friendly, sweet, helpful, imaginative, creative, loving, motivating, caring, and encouraging, I decided to take what I like to share most with people; HAPPINESS, and created this magazine, ‘HAPPY &me I believe that everybody can choose to be happy, you only need to let go of the negative thoughts, and fill your mind full of positivity. I think that every negative has a positive, if you start using this mindset, you are already one step ahead towards a happy lifestyle. I think everybody can be at least a bit as happy and positive as I am. One other mindset that gives me the happy glow that I have every day, is to enjoy the little things in life. You might think, ‘well that’s a cliché’, and maybe it is. But I do believe it helps me to my happy mindset as I think about it every day. Value the fact that you are alive every day again and bring a smile on your face for it every single day again. You only have one life to live, so you better make the most out of it. My life motto: make every day a happy day! As it makes me even more happy, is to see other people happy, and to inspire them with my happy lifestyle, I hope that you will enjoy reading this magazine and: Share the happiness!

‘Happy people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything’

“Leave a little sparkle, everywhere you go” “When it rains, look for rainbows. When it’s dark, look for stars”

“Let your smile change the world, but don’t let the world change your smile”

“A smile is the best thing you can wear”

“Every day is a happy day” 6

Favorites. Espresso. Coffee. Cappuccino.

As I have been working as a barista for over 4 years now, it might not come as a surprise that one of my first favorites is coffee. Either a good cappuccino or a tasty espresso, I love it all. Although I would not call myself a coffee freak, I am however a big coffee lover. A funny story; order a cappuccino after dinner in Italy and you might risk a slap in your face. In Italy you drink coffee with milk right after you woke up. After lunch and dinner, you consume a dark and flavorful espresso support the digestion system to work.

Optimism. Life is beautiful, life IS beautiful! Really, life is beautiful, if only you believe it is. I am a very optimistic person myself, and I love to carry this on to other people. To make the world a better and happier place, starts within ourselves and our own mindset. I believe everybody can, at least, learn to have a more optimistic look towards everything in their lives. And trust me, you WILL be more happy with your live when you give it an own touch of optimism and happiness yourself.

Cactuses. I am not the person with green fingers that would be gardening everyday. I do however, love flowers and plants in my house, and especially the easiest plants of all; cactuses. They are not only easy tot take care of, they also stay blooming for a very long time, even without watering them every couple days. In fact, you can even kill them when you water them to much. Cactuses come from the deserts and are used to not see any water for days, so watering then once every month is good enough for these plants to survive in your room. Do watch out with them, they can sting you with their small needles! Besides that, I believe that they are the cutest plants of all flora.

Pineapple. I don’t really know what it is with pineapples. Their appearance? Their color? Their taste? Their shape? I just get a happy feeling whenever I see pineapples. I love everything that contains pineapples; cocktails, salads, fruit shakes, curries, pizza, ice cream, lemonade, popsicles, candy, desserts‌ you name it. I just think this fruit is awesome!

Dancing. Do I need to say more? If the music is good, you DANCE DANCE DANCE! Or at least I do. Dancing is one of my favorite things to do. Just let go of everything right then and there, and follow the beat of the music with your body. Surrender yourself to the music and dance ltill your feet cannot dance anymore - dance ike no one is watching!

(baby)Elephants. Because (baby)elephants just are the cutest animals of all.

Guest lectures. Food.

By: Jennifer Koelman

When I heard that Jennifer would give us a guest lecture about food, it struck my attention right away. I really like the subject food, not only I love to eat good food, I also enjoy cooking, baking and trying out new recipes a lot, and next to that I like to be aware of what I exactly eat and know information about anything that has to do with the foods, I like to visit new restaurants and bars and I know about food trends. All and all prefect reasons why I would like this guest lecture. Jennifer started her lecture with asking ‘When you think of food, do you automatically think of the creative industry?’. My first thought was, YES! Because food has a lot to do with being creative, not only with flavors and ingredients, but also with presentation, advertisement and standing out from the crowd. That is also why the next subject that Jennifer started was; ‘Thinking out of the box’. She spoke about how important it is to be creative and original with your food. For example, the way you present it, either on a plate or in your menu/advertisement, but also what ingredients you use. Because food is a lives priority, there is a giant food industry and market for it, so if you want to win customers, you have to be special and serve a unique product. Next statement that Jennifer addressed was; ‘Food is entertainment’. She talked about the Moulin Rouge, where the food is a staged experience. Now a days, there are a lot simmilar dinner shows where the food is an element of the evening you spend out.

Also Jennifer spoke about the best restaurant in the world according to the ranking list, which is Noma in Copenhagen. It is housed in an 18th century warehouse at the harbor. It has been rewarded with the title ‘Best Restaurant in the world’ for four times and has two Michelin stars. Jennifer talked about food being music, which I thought was so funny. She explained that there is a vegetable orchestra and let us listen to a song on YouTube of it. Next she addressed that you eat with your eyes, which I found interesting, because when I thought about it, you really do eat with your eyes. When she showed some pictures of food, I would prefer to eat the food that looked delicious and appealing to me, rather than the food that looked like a mess. However, I am not that picky with food. I would try any kind of food, because I am to curious to experience the taste, rather than be afraid that I will not like it. Jennifer spoke about how you can taste color, and that food is art, she showed pictures of people who made aliens out of vegetables. Subsequent we talked about food in the world of bloggers. She explained how difficult it is to make pretty food pictures, because you can go horribly wrong with it easily. For example, when Martha Stuard once made a post obout her food, the pictures looked like someone got sick on a plat. Then she spoke about how food is also big in media, with for example all cooking programs, cook competitions and the big shows of Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver. Here food also creates stars, for example with the master chef programs. A last subject that Jennifer addressed was the use of Organic and biological foods, and how trending it is. I personally really like this food trend and also try to buy as much organic and biological foods. I shop a lot at halal food stores and I buy vegetables from the season, because they are also more cheap. Then Jennifer told us about a really nice new concept in Amsterdam that is called ‘As’. Here they do a head to tail thing. They cook an animal, but really cook EVERYTHING! They really take the entire animal and eat it from head to tail. It is on an island of the coast of Amsterdam, where there is a lighthouse, around that is an island, where they made an pop up restaurant. You take the boat from the KNSM-island, and spend a whole evening to eat at that restaurant. You eat only local food and when Jennifer was there she had to strip an eel and divide it for all the people, a fun experience! Jennifer spoke about a lot more food topics but that would be to much to write about, so I named the topics that I found most interesting and special. I enjoyed the guest lecture of Jennifer a lot since, as stated before, I love everything that has to do with food. A nice quote to end with that Jennifer told us; ‘A receipt is a tune you sing your own song to’.

Storytelling. Storytelling has always been an important subject in the leisure management course. We have had many classes in storytelling and learned that it is essential when it comes down to creating a concept. You see that storytelling is implemented and used in many concepts, events, and of course in the creative industry. Especially in the creative industry, storytelling is an important tool to use when you want to explain your ideas/concept. Moreover, when presenting something, for example a new magazine, using storytelling during the presentation will help you to get the listener actively attending to your presentation. Bodei Brouwer, who gave the guest lecture about storytelling, made this last statement.

Bodei is an expert on using story telling as a support during a presentation. After a short introduction, Bodei asked us to get together with our project groups. Bodei gave us the task to come up with a fairytale story based upon our projects. This was a big challenge for our group, to have so many ideas and so little time. Nevertheless, after a lot of screaming, laughing, talking and coming up with creative ideas to make our magazine project into a fairytale, we finally found a way to create a nice story.

This is the story that we came up with; Once upon a time, in a land far far away, in the Kingdom of Inholland, lived two princesses named Lexa and Alexandra. The two princesses lived in the east wing of the pink Inholland castle. In the top of the tower of the castle, a magical book was hidden in a secret room. As long as this book was inside of the Kingdom, the Kingdom was happy and pink. The magical book unveils the future of the Kingdom and all its secrets. At one day the princesses went on adventure to the secret room in the top of the tower to look into their future in the magical book. When they silently walked op the stairs to the door of the room, they found out the door had already been opened. They walked into the room and then they heard a quickie laugh‌ and there was the witch of time, trying to steal their future. As soon as the witch saw the princesses, she flew away on her black broom and sprinkled her black dust over the Kingdom that made it turn from pink to black. The princesses where very distraught, and decided to call upon their entire Kingdom, to ask who was willing to catch the witch for them. Then seven brave but ignorant citizens of the Kingdom of Inholland stepped forward and decided to take on the journey to find the book and kill the witch‌ The seven brave but ignorant citizens went into the dark forest. After a few hour walking they found a trace of black dust and followed it to the witch. The ignorant citizens fight and Anuja sacrifices herself by jumping on the witch as she flies away and she throws the book to the other citizen and then falls into the fire. Now the ignorant citizens have the book and fight about whether to bring the book or rewrite it. Eventually they agree to keep the book and together rewrite and change the future. Inholland kingdom now becomes an urban pink city.Because the two princesses where given a better heart in their new future. Everybody was happy that the future for Inholland kingdom looked bright and shinny And in the end, they lived happily ever after.

After this assignment, we received a new task from Bodei. Again we had to work with the project groups, but now we had to come up with a way of presenting our project, the magazine, with using different storytelling techniques that she explained us. Our project group chose to use the technique of using a tree to tell our story. The presentation was about a boy walking his dog in the park each day, and he would walk by a tree. At first this was just a small tree, nothing much special, but after a while, people where gathering around the tree and nurturing it, after a while the tree started to bloom and grow and become more beautiful each day. The tree was symbolic for our magazine that first was nothing and now has become a beautiful magazine for which a group of students worked hard. Our presentation was also the end of the guest lecture. I was proud of how we came up with the fairytale and of how we used a new way of presenting our magazine towards the class. I enjoyed the guest lecture and mostly enjoyed the new interaction we had in our project group. This guest lecture/workshop has definitely helped us for our final presentation and for the future.

Transmedia storytelling

Transmedia storytelling was a new concept for me. I am familiar with storytelling as you have read in the last chapter, but I had only heard little about transmedia storytelling. I had heard of it before, but never paid close attention to what trans media storytelling really entailed, so I was excited to hear more about it during the guest lecture of Rene Boonstra. Rene started his lecture with a nice enthusiastic energy, which got my attention right away. Rene was a good and interesting speaker and used examples which I could relate to. He explained that transmedia storytelling is a storytelling technique which uses various platforms such as games, books, television, events, etc. The purpose of transmedia storytelling is to actively involve the audience and trying to expand the story further. So basically, transmedia storytelling wants the story to continue. The first example Rene gave to us, was the Harry Potter series, which went from a book to a film, and from a film, to several online and offline games, and even amusement parks. Rene followed his lecture with dividing transmedia storytelling into three different parts. First he discussed ‘participation and interaction’. He showed us a picture and asked what kind of fairytale we saw in it. I guessed it right, it was the Cinderella story. Because I am a big fairytale fan, I recognized it right away, even though it was hard to see. Then Rene explained how you see fairytales and Disney stories everywhere in your daily life, in campaigns, theatre, movies, commercials and even on daily products. This shows the commitment of creating a powerful and memorable creative idea across various media to connect with consumers. Transmedia storytelling is having a meaning behind it and not just sharing and making content.

26

The second part Rene discussed was about; ‘transmedia as communication tool’. The example he gave here was of a Dutch funeral insurance company that made a moving commercial about encouraging people to say something sweet to the people they care about while they are still alive. The message was very clear and involved the viewer, which is why it was a good example of using transmedia storytelling as communication tool. The third and last part was about; ‘how important are the conversation goals, when using transmedia storytelling’. Rene showed a video of a flash mob at Heathrow airport in London that was made for T-Mobile. I thought this was such a great commercial and enjoyed watching it. It was a good example for explaining the third part. I enjoyed this interesting lecture and gained much knowledge about transmedia storytelling. I would like to conclude with the nice quote Rene gave us at the beginning of his lecture: “Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and i may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.”

They lived happily ever after ...

Seminar By: Ron Simpson

Ron Simpson: a multitasking marketer who worked for digital media; TED, BNN and XITE, brands such as; BACARDI, REDBULL and MARTINI, and music cooperation’s as; GIRLS LOVE DJS, FEEST DJ RUUD, PLEASE DON’T TELL is with this unique set of skills, the founder of his communication agency; ‘Don’t Say Nothing’. This agency is specialized in (online) content and strategies for brands, artists, events, and creates campaigns and innovations for companies that are not afraid to try something new. I went to his seminar about FOMO: the art of storytelling. He started his seminar with involving the audience to think about how people are addicted to stories; bonfire stories, bedtime stories, fairytales, books, series on Netflix, moves, you name it. He said that stories do not even need to be good, since GTST (a Dutch soap series) is already for 15 years on television. I thought this was a funny example. He went on talking about the art of storytelling. He explained that, even if it is a bad story, when telling it in the right way, you would still listen to it. Same as when you tell a good story in the wrong way, you will not listen or remind it. He clarified that the art of story telling, really is an art itself.

He continued about the moment when someone tells you “you should really have been there”, and you realize that it is only because that person cannot tell you a story. Because if he could, he would not have to say that. I thought this was a good example of understanding when someone cannot tell a story. Next subject Ron explained was FOMO, which means; Fear Of Missing Out. Ron said that this one of the most important motives of consumers now a days. If you do not want to miss something, then you will buy everything you need to actually be there. You only know what you do not want to miss, if you know it exists. Some examples that he gave about FOMO where; being disappointed that you are at work and your friends are at a festival, limited editions, Pop-Up stores, movies, videos, tweets and snapchats. He concluded his seminar with describing that if marketers would bring their story to their target group, in a way that they would not want to miss out on it, then you create the most loyal and trustworthy consumers. I thought Ron was a very inspiring an intelligent speaker and I enjoyed and learned a lot from his seminar.

Joris van Velzen ‘My inspiratory’ Introducing Joris

Inter View

I am Joris van Velzen, 24 years old, living and working in Amsterdam.

In what creative sector are you currently working? I am currently working for an online male magazine called Manners. I also have an own company in the online marketing/publisher.

What is this online magazine exactly? The online magazine called www.manners.nl . We focus on the “Manners man,” but who is this man? He is a modern gentleman: a man positive and confident in life, pays close attention to his looks and appearance. The Manners man is an innovator or early adopter, someone who likes the finer things in life and always will be aware of what is happening in terms of style and lifestyle.

Can you tell me more about your own company? My company called man-media, where we publish online magazines and make custom content for different companies. We are developing new marketing tools, media concepts and .. How did you find yourself in this career? I had the opportunity to work for interior designer Eric Kuster as his assistant, this me the chance to met people in the media world. My career started as editor for the magazine Entourage what was founded by Eric himself. What study did you do before you started in this work field? I studied mathematic at the University of Eindhoven. During my bachelor I was not happy with my study, and decided to quit after my bachelor. Now I’m finishing a study in concepting and trend watching. Can you tell me more about trend watching? Trend watching it’s a feeling and analyzing is a skill. When you can combine both you can see new businesses. People think that trend watching is about fashion, but its about everything.

‘Dreams don’t work, unless you do’

Do you have any experiences in any other fields within the creative industry? Before I started my study I did some producing from my bedroom. Not a big thing. It was fun for the time being. What would you say are the benefits and downsides of working in this sector? There is always work, because there are always opportunities. Sometimes there is a lot of stress with deadlines for clients. The benefit is that I’m creating things that I love. I can see the world, wearing the fresh clothes and experience everything what’s cool. How do you see your future? I see a beautiful future with my own company. We are now with four people and hope to expand end of this year to 10 people. This year we will publish an male, teenage and health magazine.

WOM campaign As a Rotary Youth Exchange student (RYE), I had to do a Word Of Mouth (WOM) campaign for my Rotary club in Florida US. As they sponsored me as being their exchange student, I had to give this WOM campaign in return. Also this WOM campaign would be of value for my Rotary club back home in the Netherlands, since I was an ambassador of the Netherlands in the United states for one year. My WOM campaign was as followed. To be a RYE student, you are hosted by a Rotary club in your foreign host country. But also your Rotary club in your own country, needs to host a student, in order for you to be able to go on exchange. The reason that Rotary does these exchanges is namely, that students get to know other countries. Rotary beliefs; if our young students become familiar and even friends with students from other cultures, there will be no war. Because friends do not go to war. In order for the Rotary clubs to receive new students for the exchange program, but also new Rotary clubs that are willing to host, they need to get motivated by something. In this case, ‘something’ would be me. I would go to different schools and give a presentation about the Netherlands (the country that I am from) and make the students enthusiastic to also go visit another country for a year. Next to this, I would also give the same presentation at Rotary clubs throughout the United States, to get these clubs enthusiastic to host a student. The result of my WOM campaign has been overwhelming. Fifteen more Rotary clubs had signed up to host a students, and the students that wanted to go on exchange doubled since the last year. I achieved my campaign and I was very proud that I even got a standing ovation at one of my last presentations.

Communication Plan When looking at my activities at social media, I can say I am medium to very active. I have many friends and followers on Instagram, but lately I have been sorting out who to follow and who I want to see on my timeline. I become more interested in good photography and writers, rather than to read updates of acquaintances from the place where I grew up. Especially on Instagram, I more filter on following brands, shops and bloggers that I like. I am not that much active on LinkedIn, since I do not see the necessarily of it yet, I do however want to have a better look at it in my graduation year to make sure that I am found in a good way by professional agencies for a future job.

I am more of a lurker on social media, which means that I more watch what others post, than make daily posts myself. I do make posts, mostly on Instagram because I like photography, but only then I have fun experiences on a photo. This could be three times a week, but also once every two weeks. I do not not have a standard reach of likes on my posts. They range from 19 likes, up to 57 on Instagram, and from 5 up to a 120 likes. I do not comment a lot on other peoples posts that much, because I think it is annoying to get a notification when someone else also put a comment (although you can probably disconnect that, but I did not find out how yet). I do like posts that I like a lot, because it is just one button and I like to acknowledge the people of sharing a nice post.

Next to this, I am also active on Pinterest. However, I do not pin that much myself, I do look for inspirational quotes, photography, DIY (Do It Yourself) interior ideas, outfits, recipes or find nice creative ideas for gifts. I like to just scroll down Pinterest when I am bored, and I love it when my mind is blurred and I need help with being creative.

To conclude, I would say my activity is on social media is rather average. I do however watch out with what I post, since I know that everything that you post on the web, will be on there forever. It can even be in misfortune for you if your future boss finds something unpleasant of you on the internet, and will therefore not hire you as his new employee. I feel it is important to be professional and discrete on social media and be careful with what you post.
