‘London Umbrella’ is a response to the ’A Smarter City: Ideas for the City of London’ Competition. Teamed up with a transport planner, we developed the concept ‘London Umbrella’, a mobile application which connects mobile users, independent businesses and local communities. Different themed trails and Weekend Treasure Hunt Trails would allow users to earn points and encourage activity in the city. Users have to participate to be able to receive points and redeem discounts from independent shops and cafes. The app will inspires people to get out exploring in their local area, and also provide benefits to the economy. The centrepiece physical infrastructure items are a limited number of large solar ‘Green Umbrellas’, which act as free charge points for electronic devices. The umbrellas would be moved around different green spaces, pocket parks and open public spaces, advertising the ‘park of the month’. The giant Green Umbrella would be a basis for weekend community events with health stations, pop-up restaurants and cafes, gym equipment, and child’s/adult/elderly play. It will be linked with the trails and will encourage physical activity.

MY Neighbourhood Natural Capital How can we make investment viable and beneficial to community? Funding for MY Natural Capital Garden: Habitat and Carbon Banking sell credits from additional actions that increase biodiversity or stored carbon to organisations who want to compensate for their unavoidable impacts. A requirement for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) from land use developments will be mandated as part of the forthcoming Environment Bill, which would give a regulatory driver for habitat banking. Carbon credit markets are voluntary, but carbon emissions reduction has political backing and the UK has pledged to become net zero by 2040. These opportunities have a large cross-over in delivery, so can (with careful regulation) be stacked as revenue sources for projects. For example, Environment Bank works with developers, planning authorities, conservation NGOs and landowners to provide consultancy, support and delivery services around all elements of BNG.

and blue infrastructure (or natural capital) assets to Trusts which could then exploit new revenue opportunities, such as through prescribed health activities. Place-Based Portfolio Models have an existing track record in the UK (e.g. in Milton Keynes, and currently being implemented in Newcastle), and are potentially suitable to Bristol’s assets and priorities.

Action: Explore the feasibility of new Green and Blue Spaces Trust structures and develop the business case for it in Bristol.

MY Neighbourhood Natural Capital How could the community benefit from it? - Closer look at Lawrence Hill

Green Space Improvement Opportunities at Lawrence Hill & Easton

Based on Lawrence Hill Statistic Ward Profile 2019:

Potential to expand the improvement further, especially around Lawrence Hill Train Station to create an attractive arrival space

• Lawrence Hill has a large working and children population • Part of it is considered 10% most deprived in England • 51% don’t feel like they belong to their neighbourhood • 51% are not satisfy with the quality of their green space • 42% of children in year 6 have excess weight • 59.6% of Lawrence Hill Population is Black Minority Ethic Group • 39.2% of the population born outside of uk, large proportion of them are from Somalia

Potential brownfield site to create habitat and generates income

Improve existing grass area to create more habitat and create more attractive landscaped space for community use

Improve existing amenity grass areas around highrise flats into usable public space for the community to excercise and meet up

Barton Hill Urban Park Netham Park Introduce trees and planters along shopping streets to improve shopping experience

The community can really benifit from a quality green space where they can be active and be with their neighbours. However, the design needs to cater to their specific needs.

Connection to wider blue and green infrastructure to deliver higher environmental values

Design Principles of MY Neighbourhood Natural Capital:

Co-Design - Involve community in decision making to create something they are proud of and will cherish

Inclusivity - Multiple languages to cater for all cultures and encourage community involvement

Biophilic Design - Naturalistic features are proven to be the most beneficial for mental wellbeing

Ecological - The creation of biodiverse, connected green spaces provides a vital habitat for Bristol’s declining wildlife

Accessibility - Suitable for all ages and for people with disabilities, for everyone’s enjoyment

Kai Tak River (KTR) is located in East Kowloon in the Wong Tai Sin District. It was the industrial centre before the industrial decline of the 90s. Government plans aim to turn East Kowloon into the new Central Business District of Hong Kong. KTR is associated with pollution due to its industrial heritage. KTR’s upper course runs between San Po Kong, an industrial area, and 3 major Wong Tai Sin housing estates.

Aims and Objectives Interesting Walk • Connect different land uses interesting walking experiences

to

create

• Offer a range of differently sized spaces for different social activities and communities

The lower course of KTR runs into Kai Tak Development area, which used to be Kai Tak Airport. The large brownfield site is planned to have residential and commercial development, as well as tourism facilities and a sports stadium.

Strategic Plan

Comfortable Walk • Create a green continuous walk along Kai Tak River that provides a safe and easy to navigate walking environment in the urban setting as well as providing eco-services to the area

Purposeful Walk • Provide daily necessities within the residential communities 12 minutes walking distance, which includes public transport, schools, shopping streets and green open space

• Provide green spaces for families and work forces in the area and resting space for walkers

• Create fine grain development that supports different social space and activities within a short walk Large Block On Site San Po Kong

Site Analysis: Current Problems

Pedestrian Connection KTR Flows between densely build residential area

Stormwater Management

Flows alongside Choi Hung Road, which is a busy major road that connects highways towards East and West Kowloon

The busy traffic road forces pedestrian to cross the road by foot bridge

Arrives at a challenging vehicle transport node before getting into Kai Tak Development Area

Currently, the Kai Tak River flood protection level is less than 1 in 10 years return period. Flooding has occurred lately in 2006, 2008 and 2010, which has affected the traffic of Choi Hung Road. Wong Tai Sin is highly urbanised, surface water run offs reaches the river at a high speed. Creating a sustainable urban drainage system in Wong Tai Sin will mitigate the flooding issue. Building retention ponds will not only provide flood control, it will also improve the water quality of the river and create habitat.

Rainwater

Surface Water Runoff Will Reach The Roadside Bioswale Through A Curb Opening

Increasing Water Features In The Site Will Increase The Amount Of Evaporation And Lower The Street Temperature For Pedestrians

Water Will Be Filtered And Collected For Irrigation Of Plants

Pollutants Will Sunk In The Pond

Controlled Amount Of Water Will Be Release To The Rain Garden And River To Mitigate Flooding
