On behalf of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, I welcome you to our amazing islands. No matter your reason for visiting, we hope you make time to island hop and experience the uniqueness each location offers you. The four U.S. Virgin Islands — St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas and Water Island — share similarities but in many ways they are entirely different destinations. As U.S. Territories, we are English-speaking (with a delightful lilt), use American currency, and stamps look the same as they do at your local Post Office. St. Croix is the largest island and strikes a balance between cosmopolitan St. Thomas and tranquil St. John. You’ll encounter both lush and arid landscapes as you navigate between the two historic towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted. Once in town, revel in the stunning architectural treatments on buildings and drink in the beauty of the waterfront, while enjoying a delicious meal at one of our amazing restaurants. Spend a day touring the Cruzan and Diageo rum factories, botanical garden or visit one of the museums brimming with artifacts. Kiteboarding, Harley tours, deepsea fishing and amazing scuba sites await the more adventurous. The island of St. John is the ultimate natural ecosystem. Both land and underwater acreage is maintained by the National Park Service, guaranteeing that beaches remain pristine, hiking trails stay cleared and historical ruins are

protected from weathering. Mustsee and -do activities include a visit to the pre-Columbian petroglyphs on Reef Bay Trail, bird-watching at Francis Bay, a glassblowing class at Maho Bay or sign up for one of the cultural seminars led by the Friends of the National Park. Beaches on St. John are unrivaled — try a different one every day! St. Thomas’ popularity is legendary, known for its variety of duty-free shops, world-class restaurants, full-service marinas, challenging golf course and undisputed American but West Indian feel. Our capital, Charlotte Amalie, is the most visited port in the Caribbean and boasts one of the most picturesque harbors in the world. Whether soaking up the sun on one of St. Thomas’ many beautiful beaches, strolling through historic Main Street, enjoying panoramic vistas or visiting island attractions, you will find plenty to fill your days and nights on the island. Lying within Charlotte Amalie’s harbor, you’ll spot quaint Water Island, the smallest and most undiscovered of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Relax at romantic Honeymoon Beach, tour the island’s hillsides by bike and get to know a few of the 200 residents that call this tiny island home. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Set your mind on island time and enjoy the adventure.

Whether you are interested in our vibrant culture or ready to sample exotic cuisine, whether you prefer to spend your day floating in the turquoise waters or basking on the sand, we will help you make the most of your time here. Stand at the end of the world after a walk to St. Croix’s Point Udall, the easternmost point of the U.S. Take a trip through time as you hike the National Park to the ruins and explore the tropical wilderness of St. John. Search for island treasures with local and international brands as you discover the luxury of St. Thomas shopping. You will cherish each moment as you make memories to last a lifetime. These events allow us to share information with others in the industry and keep ourselves up-to-date on travel trends so that our guests may enjoy a touch of stateside convenience without sacrificing their authentic island experience. Five locations were Blue Flag certified by the Foundation for Environmental Education during the most recent season. Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label promoting sustainable tourism and is awarded worldwide. Certification is based on 32 criteria including water quality, environmental management, and safety and services. In addition to promoting the territory worldwide, we also know the value of focusing on our resources here at home. With events like the Tommy Star Awards and Gala, we show our appreciation for our dedicated tourism ambassadors and all they do to make the island feel like your home away from home. Thank you for taking the time to read this valuable resource. We know you will have an unforgettable vacation no matter what you choose to explore. CRUZAN RUM THE DON’T HURRY RUM The tropical isle of St. Croix was discovered in 1493, by Christopher Columbus. For all its beauty, he named the island “Santa Cruz” meaning Holy Cross. Years later, under the French flag , Santa Cruz was renamed St. Croix. Cruzan Rum comes from St. Croix and the name Cruzan comes from the name of the local people of the island known as Crucians. Since the early 1800’s, the Nelthropp family has lived on and been an integral part of this legendary island’s rich history. It is here that the family produces Cruzan Rum, thereby upholding the centuries old tradition of quality Virgin Islands’ rum. Using only the purest, natural ingredients and processes, the Cruzan Rum Distillery has vastly improved on the rums of yesteryear. Cruzan Rum consistently achieves the light, distinctive taste which has made it one of the fastest growing, premium rums in the world. Cruzan’s line of rums has grown to include Cruzan Aged Dark, Aged Light, Aged 151 Proof and Black Strap, as well as 14 flavors, including the newest member of the flavor lineup, the very popular, Blueberry Lemonade. Cruzan has also reintroduced its Estate Diamond Rums in Aged Light & Aged Dark. For rum connoisseurs, Cruzan Single Barrel is the world’s first single barrel rum and winner of a Double Gold Medal at the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition. Rounding out the portfolio is Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum, made with a unique blend of nine spices and Cruzan Velvet Cinn, which takes the naturally sweet flavor of rich dairy cream a step further by adding a robust and lingering taste of bakery cinnamon. Cruzan reminds you to take your time with this on-of-a-kind rum and appreciate its smoothness and quality. We promise it’s worth the Don’t Hurry. Cruzan Rum. The Don’t Hurry Rum So be sure to ask your bartender for a Cruzan Rum Drink, because in the Virgin Islands when we say “Rum” we mean Cruzan Rum!

JAHNESTA RITTER

By Anquanette Gaspard

FAVORITE EATS “I love an authentic Cruzan plate with pot fish, seasoned rice, baked macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and potato stuffing. You can find that at just about any restaurant on the island!”

St. Croix native Jahnesta Ritter is what many would call a “pepper pot” of influences. While she didn’t attend culinary school, she always had a passion for cooking even as she studied journalism in college.

stx 8

With ancestry rooted in St. Thomas and Puerto Rico, it was no surprise when she started Savor St. Croix, a subscription box service that seemingly transformed overnight into a restaurant that offers true Cruzan cuisine with a Puerto Rican flair. Ritter is committed to bringing St. Croix directly to your doorstep and into your heart so you can savor the flavor. What made you start Savor St. Croix? How did the business come about? Two years ago I moved home from South Florida and quickly became the go-to person for family and friends when they wanted local treats they missed from home. I realized that most people didn’t have family here to purchase these items for them, and that’s how Savor St. Croix was born in April 2014. It was

a blend of all my skills: my love for cooking, my marketing skills and my sales background. The monthly subscription box service is an easy way for people living abroad to sign up online to receive edible and non-edible products like sweets, savory goods, soaps and artwork that were crafted here in the USVI. How has Savor St. Croix evolved into what it is today? Customers can now create their own subscription box online by using the a la carte option to choose their items for the month. We now offer gift packages for corporate events and weddings. I did one destination wedding in the Dominican Republic, where the couple was from the USVI and wanted a little piece of home on their special day. I always wanted to open a family restaurant, so I operated a physical location in downtown Christiansted for a few months where I offered local dishes and customers could dine in or pick

up their lunch. We had fresh local juices as well as local dishes like barbecue tofu, conch in butter sauce and red pea soup. Due to the logistics of the location, I had to put the restaurant on hold; but I am searching for a new location. What are some ways that you give back to the community? I participate in a number of volunteer events at local schools, teaching students how to cook local dishes from St. Croix. I also enjoy exposing visitors to other talents here in the USVI through advertising them on social media and including them in my subscription boxes. What do you think is a hidden gem on the island? The locals are the hidden gems here. I encourage visitors to interact with locals because you’d be surprised how you could accidentally bump into an experience you wouldn’t have elsewhere. St. Croix itself is a hidden gem.

By organizing one of the most challenging Ironman competitions in the world and strengthening the local community through multisport training, this championship duo has a symbiotic relationship geared toward promoting St. Croix as a premier sporting destination in the Caribbean. Guthrie: I moved here 25 years ago from New England to aid with reconstruction of the island after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. I became involved with Project St. Croix, a nonprofit set up to boost tourism on the island. The triathlon was in bad financial straits and needed resurrection for its tourism value, so we took it over in 1992 and have organized it ever since. Fricks: A great job opportunity brought me here in 1999 and [I] began doing triathlons in 2001 after watching an exposé about a 70-year old triathlete. In 2009, I had the opportunity to reenergize and rebuild the Federation, a notfor-profit dedicated to furthering the sport and the community. With my board of directors, we created new and exciting races, involved the community and started a juniors program, which is the future of the sport. We also work in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee.

Scott Fricks, president of the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation, and Tom Guthrie, race director of Captain Morgan Ironman 70.3, are changing the athletic landscape of St. Croix, one race and one athlete at a time.

St. Croix works specifically with organizing the races. It’s a very symbiotic relationship where one cannot function without the other. Fricks: We engage the community, explaining why training hard and pushing yourself to the max is necessary and what you get out of it. We encourage them to try smaller races like the triple mini triathlon that includes a 200-meter swim, three-mile bike ride and three-quarter-mile run. We’re huge on involving children and enjoy working with kids with autism and disabilities. Many West Indians do not come out and participate due to the

swimming portion of the sport, but we host free clinics that teach them how to swim, cycle and run. What’s your favorite local dish? Guthrie: Stew chicken, rice and beans was not a dish readily available when growing up in Vermont. When I first tried it, I wondered where it had been all my life! Now, it’s my all-time favorite meal. Fricks: Chicken roti is my favorite local dish. I’m also a big soup person, and Rowdy Joe’s soups are amazing. They serve two different soups every night and I’m never disappointed.

How do you involve the local community? Guthrie: Local support is essential for a successful Ironman 70.3 and every other race held on the island. Only local volunteers are used, since we have the best locally homegrown race organization in the sport. I work with many kids events, like the Boy Scouts troop, and support the fundraising program for the local swim team. I work with Scott often, as he represents the athletes involved in triathlons and other foot races; and Project DiscoverUSVIMagazine.com

You don’t have to feel pressured when shopping here; the experience is as laid-back as the island’s ambience. You’ll find a little bit for every taste level here, from handcrafted jewelry and vibrant Caribbean art to designer timepieces. You won’t find long lines, pushy hawkers or jostling here — just plenty of decisions for you to make. A highlight of shopping in St. Croix is the abundance of items you are unlikely to see on the mainland. You’ll find a wealth of stunning paintings, pottery, sculptures and jewelry created by local artists who are inspired by the colors, architecture and amazing natural beauty that surrounds them.

Many local jewelers have created distinctive bangle-andclasp bracelet designs that have become emblematic of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. Locally made spices, seasonings and hot sauces invite visitors to take home a taste of the islands, while tropical fruit jams and jellies make sweet mementos. Take advantage of your visit and stock up on the local Cruzan Rum, available in several varieties and flavors. You can find plenty of vacation staples on the island as well. A wide array of top-shelf liquors, fine porcelain, glass figurines, loose and mounted gemstones, brand-name perfumes and

cosmetics, and high-end jewelry and timepieces can all be found throughout the many stores in St. Croix, often duty-free. If you’re looking for souvenirs or perhaps a sassy sarong, stop by the colorful open-air market by the Frederiksted cruise ship pier. Unfortunately, the market is only open when ships are docked, so make sure you check before going. There’s also no sales tax or duty on original art, so channel your inner enthusiast and add one more work to your collection or get one started with a unique piece. And don’t sweat it if your suitcases are already full; many merchants are happy to mail your purchases directly to your home.

AN ARTISTIC HAVEN

The island of St. Croix offers an artist’s dream palette: vibrant blues and greens with deep earth tones that pull them together. Crucian artists share these gems of nature in galleries, studios and museums, as well as at festivals and celebrations. In Christiansted, artists working in various mediums display their pieces in resort shops and downtown stores daily, particularly making the most of Art Thursdays. Artists from around the world can also share their talent through the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts’ Artist in Residence program in Frederiksted. Founded 23 years ago by Candia Atwater, the CMCA is in a historic 1780s Danish building that has been fully restored. There you can find galleries, classrooms, studios, a gift shop and a courtyard where events and performances are held regularly. The most popular of these is the Second Thursdays, a year-round community arts and music gathering. The annual Island Art & Soul calendar, offered by the center since its founding, remains an easy way for visitors to take home local art. Near Frederiksted, in the St. George Village Botanical Garden, artifacts from the area’s 2,000-year history can be viewed at the museum there. Local art of all kinds can also be purchased at that museum store. Sunset Jazz on Frederiksted beach near the cruise ship pier attracts musicians from the islands, as well as other countries on the third Friday of every month. Audience members come from around the island with their lawn chairs, expecting great music will accompany their fabulous views of the setting sun. In Christiansted, the music is in the park, not on the beach. The Christiansted National Historic Site’s Fort Christiansvaern bandstand is the site of Jazz in the Park, a series of regular free, early evening concerts. If the play’s your thing, then look to the Caribbean Community Theatre in Christiansted. Around for more than 30 years of entertaining residents and visitors, the all-volunteer troupe mounts productions of musical revues, comedies, dramas and performances for and by local children. For something a bit off the beaten path, the mahogany carvers in the rain forest near Frederiksted combine art and nature. You might have to ask someone to point you in the right direction, but when you find them, you’ll have a memory of the island that will last a lifetime.

West Indian Cuisine

To get a true taste of St. Croix cuisine, you must sample traditional West Indian dishes. Local specialties are available throughout the island. Callaloo, for example, is a flavorful soup stocked with hearty greens and seasoned with chili peppers and various herbs. For a great snack or appetizer, try pates — savory pastries filled with spicy beef, chicken or conch. Johnny cakes are tasty, unleavened, deep-fried dough served plain or stuffed with cheese. Fungi is the West Indian answer to polenta. The popular cornmeal-based side dish is often served with fish and topped with Creole sauce. To wash it all down like the locals do, reach for a bottle of ginger beer, a refreshing, non-alcoholic brew.

Christiansted Eats

The Christiansted boardwalk is home to several casual-dining spots celebrated not only for their gorgeous views of the harbor but also for their hearty portions of traditional American options served with West Indian flair. Here, visitors can be treated to a substantial breakfast or the freshest catch — which might be wahoo, mahi-mahi or yellowfin tuna. The fish is so fresh, in fact, that you might see your lunch arriving slung over a local fisherman’s shoulder as the day’s bounty is hand-delivered to the many restaurants along the boardwalk throughout the town.

Frederiksted for Foodies

On the west side of the island, the town of Frederiksted has a few quaint oceanfront dining spots beloved for their superb Sunday brunches and stellar views of the sunset. This area is home to a few longstanding establishments that are frequented by locals in the know for their mouthwatering lobster and incredible ocean views. Cane Bay in particular has become a culinary hot spot, full of

innovative restaurants and trendy beach bars that offer creatively presented fare in a casual atmosphere. No matter where you venture in St. Croix — from east to west and everywhere between — you’re never far from fabulous bites, warm hospitality and a drop-dead-gorgeous setting. ST. St. Croix is the ideal choice for visitors looking for a vacation home or an investment property for a number of reasons — with the ease of the buying/renting process being at the top of the list for many buyers. Living in America’s paradise includes a host of perks, such as year-round tropical climate, pristine turquoise beaches lined with palm trees and no state taxes. Additionally, the island is a territory of the United States, meaning there are no worries regarding immigration, work permits or property rights. Buyers receive a deed and title insurance and can have the peace of mind knowing that their investment is safe. Almost anyone can have a slice of paradise in St. Croix. Whether it’s a luxury condo, a single family home with ample yard space, or a sprawling estate that is a stone’s throw away from crystal-clear beaches, there is something for every budget. Visitors also have to option of purchasing a parcel of land to build their dream home on. There are plenty of local construction companies that will guide you every step of the way and offer insight on how to get the most out of your land. So, what are some additional perks to look forward to? For starters, adjusting to island life on St. Croix is fairly easy for any newcomer. English is the local language spoken, although locals speak with a particular dialect known as the Cruzan dialect. There are also a number of job opportunities available on the island in a variety of fields. Opening a small business is another route that many newcomers opt for. The Economic Development Commission (EDC) is part of a local, semi-autonomous government entity that offers tax incentives to business owners who qualify for the program. Island life may not be a good fit for everyone, but living the St. Croix life? Now that’s one size fits all!

Loving Thy Neighbors

JEFFREY NEEVEL

By Carol M. Bareuther

There’s a strong spirit of hospitality, generosity and philanthropy in the Virgin Islands. Community service is also in the DNA of Rev. Jeffrey Neevel, a New York native and pastor of the St. Thomas Reformed Church. Neevel is quick to say that his good works aren’t all about him but, instead, that it takes a village of community members working together to raise awareness and help those in need.

stt 6

A sixth-generation pastor, Neevel has been the guiding light at this historic church for nearly a decade. He has led by example, following one of his favorite Bible verses: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Neighbors hold a special place for Neevel. In fact, it was seeing Charlotte Amalie’s homeless community that greatly impacted him during his first visit to the island 20 years ago. Neevel, who had just graduated from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, arrived with a group of fellow Reformed Church in America members to help clean up and rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Marilyn. The Virgin Islands can be the end of the line for U.S. mainland expats who fall victim to drug and alcohol addiction, and on-island services struggle to keep pace with needs. Neevel works to build relationships with the island’s homeless and help them get the care that they need, whether it’s through rehab programs or reestablishing contact with estranged family members. The St. Thomas Reformed Church has been active in the community since its founding in 1660. Neevel has strengthened this bond with the church’s youth group. Instead of these young people holding raffles, yard sales or auctions to fund their annual week-long mission trip to needy destinations, each teen obtains sponsors for community service projects. These activities include cleaning up downtown Charlotte Amalie and marches organized by local nonprofit groups, supporting causes such as domestic and gun violence. As a result, the church’s next generation learns that charity starts at home and their mission trips hold even more meaning. One of St. Thomas’s successful civic projects took root at the church, and Neevel is working to

HELPING OTHERS WITH THE GENEROSITY OF CHURCH MEMBERS, PASTOR NEEVEL WORKS WITH THE SALVATION ARMY TO HELP THOSE IN NEED GAIN ENTRY INTO REHAB PROGRAMS ON THE U.S. MAINLAND, SETTING THEM ON THE PATH TO REBUILDING THEIR LIVES. increase its impact. My Brother’s Workshop (MBW) — which was founded by church member Scott Bradley in 2007 — teaches at-risk teen boys various construction skills for the purpose of future employment. Last year, participants built a new bakery and café on Bakery Square in Back Street. This doubled the number of young people MBW serves by introducing culinary instruction for both men and women.

Now, MBW’s freshly baked bread is on the menu when Pastor Neevel and the church’s music and arts director lead contemporary worship services every month for the area’s residents. This, like his approach to the island’s homeless and church’s youth, is one way that Neevel continues to practice what he preaches. For more information on the church and Pastor Neevel, visit stthomasreformedchurch.org.

Making a Difference

DINNER AND A CAUSE

By Carol M. Bareuther

Dinner with friends might not seem like a way to make a difference in a community, but six St. Thomas women are doing just that — and succeeding. stt 10

Since its founding, Dinner and a Cause has hosted 36 events, raised more than $275,000 and assisted many struggling nonprofit charities by donating monies and enhancing awareness. The concept for Dinner and a Cause began when Sharon McIver, one of its three founders, attended a dinner party in California hosted by her sister and two friends. The idea is genius in its simplicity: In lieu of going out, the organizers host a party at one of their homes and, like any dinner party, provide the food and wine for the evening. The guests, in turn, donate roughly the cost of an evening out to a local charity. McIver was so impressed with the concept that she mentioned it to Suzanne Mabe and Terry Halpern upon her return to St. Thomas. “We should do that here,” the three said simultaneously. And with that, Dinner and a Cause was born. The first event took place in 2006 at a lovely vacation villa that was donated by its owner for the night. McIver, Halpern and Mabe

put on a lavish spread and, with 20 women attending, were able to provide Nana Baby Children’s Home, a foster home, $1,200 for a much-needed refrigerator. “Never underestimate that something small can make a big contribution,” says Mabe. Dinner and a Cause grows by word of mouth and friends inviting friends. There is now a guest list of more than 700, with 80 to 100 women regularly attending each event. In their own way, girlfriend to girlfriend, the women who attend these events give of themselves to provide urgently needed funds for charities that are simply trying to make a better life for someone less fortunate. All locations are donated, whether they are at a private home, villa or restaurant. When at a home, the “chefs” are the board members who provide the food and beverages and absorb the costs. Learning of Dinner and a Cause, a number of restaurants have graciously hosted events,

CULINARY CHARITY CURRENT BOARD MEMBERS SUZANNE MABE, PAM LARSEN, EULA HYMES, JOANIE DELUGO, LETTY HULSMAN AND KRISTY SOLT ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THEIR WORK. THEIR MOTTO IS “A DINNER PARTY THAT IS DIFFERENT AND MAKES A DIFFERENCE.” providing the food for free and offering a cash bar. No matter the venue, each dinner is always elegant and the atmosphere warm and festive, like any good party. A signature feature of these events is that 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to the cause of the evening. “We could never have known that when Sharon visited her sister in California a decade ago, what a wonderful gift she brought back with her,” says Mabe. “We invite visitors to take the Dinner and a Cause idea back to their own communities.” For more information, visit dinnerandacause.org.

Historic Hassel Island By Carol M. Bareuther

What was once home to Arawak Indians played an important role in the protection of the harbor. In 1806, the British erected several edifices on Hassel Island, such as Fort Shipley, Cowell’s Battery, Garrison House and Fort Willoughby.

Used as a signaling station in the 1840s, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company used Hassel Island as its base of operations and built the Creque Marine Railway, one of the oldest steamoperated marine railways. Today, 95 percent of Hassel Island is part of the Virgin Islands

stt 12

National Park system. Hassel Island’s historic and archeological treasures are being restored through a massive multimilliondollar project — the joint efforts of the Virgin Islands National Park, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, St. Thomas Historical Trust, the Virgin Islands government,

the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, private residents and local businesses. The best way to experience Hassel Island is a unique historic kayaking tour with Virgin Islands Ecotours at 340-779-2155. This three-hour adventure begins at their new floating dock at the Frenchtown Marina. A short paddle takes you to Garrison House for an informative talk, followed by a brief hike to Fort Willoughby. Kayaking continues through the coaling station dock and Careening Cove to the Creque Marine Railway. Masks and fins are provided at Garden Bay to explore the underwater ledge running across the beach. Virgin Islands Ecotours donates a portion of the proceeds from each tour guest to the Friends of the National Park and the St. Thomas Historical Trust. This donation gives guests a full one-year membership to both organizations.

Water Island By Michelle Felder

Known as the “(Almost) Secret U.S. Virgin Island,” Water Island is an off-the-beaten-path getaway for visitors looking to get in touch with nature.

Water Island is located just a half-mile off of St. Thomas, but with fewer than 200 residents, no hotels, shops or a main town, it feels worlds away. At almost 500 acres, Water Island is the smallest and least known of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with much of the volcanic island remaining undeveloped. One of the few semiprivate islands remaining in

the Caribbean, this mountainous and lush island features postcardperfect beaches, crystal-clear waters and spectacular views. Named for its freshwater sources, Water Island was once used by both merchant and pirate ships to replenish water supplies. The island was owned by Denmark until 1769 and later became home to several cotton

plantations and livestock during the 18th and 19th century. In 1905, the island was sold to the Danish East Asiatic Company but was later purchased by the United States in 1944 to protect the submarine base on St. Thomas. Water Island officially became the fourth U.S. Virgin Island in 1996. Today, Water Island is ideal for a quick getaway. Visitors can take a leisurely hike to wellpreserved ruins, kayak along the coast, visit one of the many beautiful beaches or snorkel with sea turtles and over pristine reefs teeming with colorful fish. The best way to appreciate Water Island’s natural beauty is to take a guided tour with St. Thomas Adventure Tours. Tours are small, unlike the bustling cruise ship tours, and are customizable to your liking and abilities. A favorite tour departs Lindbergh Bay for an exciting paddle along the coastline and over to Honeymoon Beach

in Druif Bay, which includes swimming with sea turtles, exploring a pristine coral reef and lunch at a beachside restaurant. Private tours for families, wedding parties or other groups are also available. ST. THOMAS ADVENTURE TOURS Kayak & Snorkel Tours Water Island and St. Thomas, Lindbergh Bay 340-227-8383 www.stthomasadventuretours.com Swim with sea turtles, snorkel over a beautiful coral reef teeming with tropical fish or kayak over clearblue waters with spectacular views of rock formations, neighboring islands and cays. Transportation is included in most guided tours. Avoid crowded excursions; tours are offered to a limited number of guests so that you will have personalized service. Private tours for small and large groups are also available. Tours book quickly and reservations are required.

When it comes to name-brand items, if you see it, buy it. Prices are determined by the manufacturer, so you won’t find it for less, though some stores offer gifts with purchase to entice you. You can haggle on the price of store-brand merchandise, but if you need to shop around before buying, ask for a business card with the price on it. With so many shops, it’s easy to confuse where you saw what, and someone new may not give you the same great price, even at the same store. If you are ring shopping — rings always make for great buys — try to make your purchase earlier in the day. Many jewelers can have a ring sized for you within an hour or two while you continue shopping. Larger purchases can often be delivered to your hotel.

Called the Miracle Mile, Charlotte Amalie’s Main Street seems like an overflowing pirate’s treasure chest. You’ll find a magnificent assortment of duty-free watches, jewelry, liquor, linens, art, collectibles and more at its many historic buildings. Be sure to explore all the little alleyways, side streets and malls for some unique, oneof-a-kind finds. Shoppers stopping by the venerable A.H. Riise Mall are rewarded with great buys and a chance to stroll through history. With imposing buildings, the oldest and largest retailer in the islands is actually a complex of converted warehouses the size of city blocks that open onto the waterfront end at Main Street. The Rolex store is in a 19th-century Danish building that once housed the island’s harbormaster.

Nearby, the colorful open-air Vendors Plaza may be the most fun place to find trinkets for those back home. Outside of Charlotte Amalie, there are several additional shopping opportunities. Visit Havensight Mall or Crown Bay Center by the two cruise ship docks for more leisurely shopping options, with many of the same stores you’ll see on Main Street. Yacht Haven Grande offers exclusive designer boutiques on a lovely promenade along the mega yacht marina. If you get hungry during your retail retreat, Yacht Haven Grande also offers several restaurants where you can stop for a nice meal, a quick bite or a happy hour cocktail. On the east end of the island, Red Hook is a great place to shop while waiting to hop the ferry to St. John.

THE SHOPS AT YACHT HAVEN GRANDE Long Bay Road, Charlotte Amalie 340-547-5875 www.shopsatyhg.com The Shops at Yacht Haven Grande has 80,000 square feet of retail space and exciting dining options complemented by the backdrop of superyachts docked at its marina. Expect boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Bulgari and 30 other retail boutiques, like BCBG, White House/Black Market, Orogold and more. The duty-free shopping is an escape from the bustling downtown of St. Thomas. Three waterfront restaurants offer dining from casual to haute cuisine with excellent service and delectable meals and cocktails.

Taste of the Islands Thanks to a mixture of African, European and American influences, the cuisine of St. Thomas and the rest of the U.S. Virgin Islands is a hodgepodge of flavors. Blending imported ingredients with locally grown fruits, vegetables and spices to give dishes a tropical twist, there’s something to suit every palate. From the bustling cafés in the heart of the island’s tourist hub to historic restaurants set in pastoral valleys, the St. Thomas restaurant scene is as varied as the people who live and travel there. You’ll find an eclectic mix of cuisines on St. Thomas, including American, Italian, Mexican, Asian and other options. A visit to St. Thomas is not complete without tasting some of its local dishes. After all, one of the best ways to experience a destination is through your

stomach and your taste buds. However, some of the best jaunts to sample local dishes are located outside of Charlotte Amalie and will require a jaunt via taxi or car. Adventurous foodies will find no shortage of authentic options, ranging from food trucks to sit-down restaurants. One of the most popular dishes in the Virgin Islands is callaloo, a stew made from the leaves of the callaloo bush. Don’t let its green hue deter you — this

rich and hearty stew is not only delicious but has just the right amount of kick. Another must-try is fungi, a kind of dumpling made from salted cornmeal mixed with water and shortening, and frequently, okra. It’s generally served as a side dish with fish or meat dishes. Meat pate is another West Indies favorite. These pastries stuffed with spiced meat, fish or vegetables and then deep fried are perfect as a light snack.

Tradition meets competition each spring with the annual Coal Pot Cook-Off. Organized by the St. Thomas Historical Trust, this event teams the creativity of some of the island’s best and brightest chefs with an ageold cooking method. The result? Caribbean-favorite dishes with a savory twist. Last year’s lip-smacking buffet of offerings included pumpkin and banana fritters, callaloo, chicken and mangofilled Johnny cakes, and smoked herring pilaf — a nod to the island’s Danish roots. “Our goal with Coal Pot Cook-Off is to revive a dying cultural tradition by showcasing it for the public — locals and visitors alike,” says Erik Miles, executive director of the St. Thomas Historical Trust. “It also keeps [the tradition] current and in the forefront of our chefs’ minds. The fact that the contestants are able to produce enough ’taste samples’ [for 250 or more guests gives you] an idea of what can be accomplished with a... relatively small coal pot.” The coal pot is a simple device. A sturdy bowl, which sits atop a vented stand where the coals are placed, is covered with a griddle on which to cook. It’s much like a modern charcoal grill but smaller at only about a foot in diameter. While it predates the stoves of today, it’s the specific way it cooks food that has made its popularity endure. Ingredients simmer slowly, a method that brings out rich flavors, while soaking up a smoky aroma from the coals. Miles plans on building the Virgin Islands Coal Pot CookOff into a major international food event.

WHAT’S NEW IN ST. THOMAS 1

Doze off in a hammock. Climb a ruin. Kiss a fish. Get married in a rain forest. Sip a mint julep. Do the samba. Grab the tail of a dancing dragon. Lounge on a teak deck. And dream of your next vacation.

Jimmy Buffett first sailed into St. Thomas back in 1972. Now, the singer-songwriter who is world famous for his island-inspired lyrics has cemented his brand on St. Thomas with the opening of his flagship Margaritaville Vacation Club resort by Wyndham on a 25-acre property, overlooking beautiful Water Bay. Parrottheads can visit the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar for… you guessed it, a margarita!

Culinary excellence. Conch pate. Gooseberrylamb sausage. Ginger-scented crab-stuffed shrimp. These are a few of the dishes that earned the USVI Culinary Team a silver medal at the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association’s 2015 Taste of the Caribbean. “This event gives our chefs exposure to the latest trends in Caribbean food and beverage so they can bring them back to share with our visitors,” says Lisa Hamilton, president of the USVI Hotel & Tourism Association.

In 2015, the University of the Virgin Islands’ president Dr. David Hall earned the prestigious Tommy Star Award of Excellence for his work in establishing the institution’s first-ever four-year Hospitality and Tourism Management program. “Last May, we graduated our first student from the program, and there are many more in the wings ready to assume jobs and leadership positions in this industry that is so critical to the future of the Virgin Islands,” says Hall.

All across St. Thomas, resorts are going green. Hoteliers are harnessing the power of the sun to provide green energy for their guests. Examples include solar-generated electricity at the Green Iguana Hotel, solar-heated hot water at the Mafolie Hotel, and LED lights, energy-efficient air conditioning and a new solar array that will energize Bolongo Bay Beach Resort.

Life Aquatic

St. Thomas is an ideal place for kayakers, especially its unspoiled and picture-perfect Mangrove Lagoon Marine Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. There, nature lovers get more than they can imagine in terms of plant, animal and marine splendor. A not-toostrenuous guided paddle tour through the protected maze of beautiful islands of red mangroves takes visitors past vibrant flora, fauna and wildlife that’s a rare sight anywhere else on the island. The U.S. Virgin Islands’ many reefs, wrecks and drop-offs offer endless opportunities for underwater exploration. The warm shallow waters are home to a rich variety of marine life and offer amazing visibility — up to 80 feet in many locations. You can find a variety of hard and soft coral, lava formations, trenches and caverns, along with countless species of reef fish, turtles, sea horses, eels, lobster,

manta rays, dolphins, barracuda, octopi and sharks. St. Thomas has several fully certified dive shops that offer everything from introductory lessons and certification courses to beach and boat dives for more seasoned divers. You haven’t fished until you’ve dropped a line in the island’s world-renowned fishing grounds. Mahi-mahi, tuna, marlin and wahoo abound. Dozens of reputable charter boat crews can take you to the best locations and provide gear. A number of deep-sea charter boats offering several packages run out of the IGY American Yacht Harbor. St. Thomas’s tranquil waters and ideal trade winds make it the perfect playground for stand-up paddleboarding, kiteboarding and windsurfing. Many beachfront resorts rent equipment and offer lessons to get watersports enthusiasts off and gliding on the sea’s surface. Kiteboarder

wannabes can be airborne after an introductory course, and there are several spots, most notably on the island’s southeast side, where the side shore breezes and flat water make the conditions just right to catch some air. Stand-up paddleboarding is another great way to skim the sea. There are now several shops where you can rent a board and join the paddling set. St. Thomas’ many protected harbors make it an ideal spot for the sport, and you’ll often see enthusiasts paddling over the blue water in Secret Harbour, Hull Bay or Brewers Bay. The year-round trade winds make windsurfing a favorite pastime in St. Thomas. Many beachfront resorts and watersports outfitters carry rental equipment for adults and juniors and also offer introductory courses, as well as advanced lessons. Bluebeard Beach and Vessup Bay are among the spots where this sport can best be enjoyed.

Here’s a sampling of the best of the best in St. Thomas' sporting events. Avid runners can get their race on with the Montessori to Magens Road Race — an eight-mile, one-way race across St. Thomas to raise money for local charities. Held in November, the race begins at the VI Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy and ends at Magens Bay beach. The challenging course features a steep terrain with a max elevation of 735 feet! If you love a good tennis competition, then the Choice Wireless VI Open Tennis is for you. Held in February at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, the tournament draws players from the Virgin Islands, U.S. mainland, Europe and Central America. With over $13,000 in prize money, seven different classes are scheduled, including Men’s and Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles. Sailors from around the world descend on St. Thomas during the last week of March to participate in the St. Thomas International Regatta. Known as the “crown jewel of the Caribbean,” the three-day event offers sailors unparalleled competition and shore-side fun. Featured distance races stretch from Cowpet Bay to Charlotte Amalie Harbour and back, showcasing the coastline and harbor capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Serious anglers can join the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, which is one of the most competitive saltwater sports fishing events in the world. Started in 1972 by Chuck Senf, it welcomes seasoned veterans and first timers to try their hand at hooking the magnificent blue marlin. Held in August, the tournament operates on a release program and encourages anglers to support conservation of the species.

Pirate’s Paradise At only 19 square miles, St. John may be the smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, but its alluring backdrop makes it incomparable. Filled with lush landscapes, pristine waters and white-sand beaches, visitors will agree that bigger is not always better. St. John’s immense national park, spanning more than half the island, offers nature lovers a chance to hike countless trails or snorkel the crystalline waters at the Coral Reef National Monument. With no airport or cruise ports, St. John remains the least commercialized of the islands, allowing visitors the perfect island getaway vacation.

Building Mongoose Junction

GLEN SPEER

TRENDSETTING IN 1979, MONGOOSE JUNCTION ONLY HOUSED A FEW SHOPS, INCLUDING CURRENT RESIDENTS RUDY AND IRENE PATTON’S JEWELRY STUDIO. SPEER’S DESIGN PARTNER, LINDA SMITH, HAD A STUDIO FOR HER HAND-PAINTED CLOTHING.

Most visitors to St. John find their way to Mongoose Junction at some point for the shopping, the restaurants or the nightlife. Not so well known, perhaps, is the man behind the iconic landmark.

Glen Speer opened Mongoose Junction in 1979. Today, he and his wife Radha still own a shop there, Caravan Gallery, which reflects their travels in the early days of Mongoose Junction. “Caravan Gallery is an important part of our lives,” he says. “We have a lot of artifacts from all over the world. We have a great staff that has been with us forever. They’re family.” We caught up with Speer to discuss his many accomplishments. Where were you living before coming to St. John? California, but I grew up in Idaho. What was your profession there? I went to [University of California] Berkeley to study architecture. After school I lived in a commune, Rubel Farms, an interesting experience. There were no drugs, but lots of energy. It was a good lead in to St. John. Everything had to be improvised.

What adjustments did you have to make when you relocated in 1969? Not many, really. I was single and used to living frugally. Grocery shopping on St. John was a challenge. What do you like most about living on St. John? It’s beautiful — the weather, the water, the park. People who have lived here a long time know each other and share an identity. Animal Care Center is a good example. Citizens raised money privately for it. Ultimately, it takes people getting together. When we come back from a trip, we talk to half a dozen people on the way home from the ferry. It reinforces a personal identity. Where did the Mongoose Junction idea originate? We were talking about what was missing in Cruz Bay — parking and restrooms. I said we should

be able to build a center that has them. Not much land was available then, and people said this was too far out of town. What was your inspiration for the design and construction? The ruins on St. John and St. Croix. The basic materials are stone, sand and cement. Mongoose is 40 years old and still going. [Its] purpose might change, but it won’t be torn down. When you have free time, what do you do for enjoyment? I love my garden. I built a greenhouse and grow beautiful plants — one of the special things about being here. Walking our dog. Being able to travel occasionally. Do you have a favorite local dish or restaurant? [We go to] Scoops for an afterdinner treat for ice cream that’s made right there. DiscoverUSVIMagazine.com

Shopping while on vacation can sometimes be considered daunting by many; you have to know where to go, how to get there and how to get all of your items back home. We’ll make it all such a breeze for you that you’ll find yourself wanting less lounge time and more retail therapy. First and foremost, make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat, and bring along a bottle of water to get you through the heat of the day. Now you’re ready to power shop. St. John features a collection of cozy shops with island-inspired art, clothing, home accessories and handmade jewelry. At the north end of town, Mongoose Junction offers a picturesque garden setting for its maze of one-of-a-kind galleries, boutiques, shops and cafés. For day-to-day sundries or to fill your picnic basket for the beach, The Marketplace is a 20-minute walk from Cruz Bay or a quick cab ride away. Know your prices before you leave home — and don’t forget

that there’s no sales tax. Some additional items might still be worth buying even if you go over your Customs allowance. Local art is duty-free, so feel free to indulge. Unset gemstones are duty-free as well. You may want to consider that investment-grade diamond and have it set later by your favorite jeweler back home. Why would you lug around all those purchases when you don’t have to? Most retailers in St. John will ship your items insured by U.S. Mail, so they will be waiting for you at home safe and sound upon your return. In Coral Bay on St. John’s East End, wander through Cocolobo Plaza for handmade jewelry, home décor and other original creations or visit the fun and funky shops at the Skinny Legs commercial complex for T-shirts and beachwear. Need a break? Relax and take a laid-back stroll along the shady lanes and beachside shopping malls of Cruz Bay, just steps from the ferry dock.

MONGOOSE JUNCTION North Shore Road, Cruz Bay • 340-774-8175 www.mongoosejunctionstjohn.com Mongoose Junction is St. John’s premier shopping and dining destination. Just a five-minute stroll from the St. John Ferry Dock, you’ll discover a series of magnificent native stone and mahogany buildings, joined by lush terraces and bridges built by local craftsmen with designs inspired by the Danish sugar mills. Along the way, you’ll find fabulous shops and galleries, designer and locally made jewelry, art and gift items, resortwear, swimwear and casual clothing. When it’s time for refreshment, choices abound — everything from a deli breakfast in the morning to artisan ice cream, eclectic courtyard cafés, fabulous bars, enchanting restaurants, and our own brewpub and wine shop. Plan a day trip with our activity center or find your dream property after some personal pampering at the spa. There’s live local music almost every night, ATMs, Wi-Fi, clean public bathrooms and ample free parking. Home to these and other fine businesses:

In St. John, the path of both elegant dining and casual noshing starts at Wharfside Village at the end of the ferry dock; winds through the town past Lime Inn, The Marketplace and Mongoose Junction; and then continues out to Coral Bay and East End via Centerline or North Shore Road. Resorts generally have beach bars where bathing suits are welcome and dining rooms call for islandelegant attire, and both are open to the public. For elegant dining in Cruz Bay, visitors can choose from multiple

locations that feature an array of mouthwatering dishes and fine wines with some of the sweetest sunset views you’ll find in St. John. Here, diners can sample savory fare — from classic italian cuisine to French and Caribbean fusion foods. On a more casual note, visitors can congregate at one of the many local pubs and bars on the island for a low-key evening. Sit on a patio and sip on one of the island’s many draft beers while enjoying the Caribbean breeze. For wine connoisseurs, the island offers locations that feature daily wine

tastings, fine wines and premium liquors and cigars. For a fun night of dining and entertainment, head to Wharfside Village, where visitors can find the only local restaurant offering toes-in-the-sand dining and unique bar food with higher-end twists like Ribeye Steak Sandwich and Tempura Shrimp Tacos. Wharfside Village is also home to an active bar scene that regularly serves up a plethora of interesting cocktails and daiquiris and hosts new and exciting musical talent that keeps the party going long into the night.

Aqua Adventures

St. John’s waters offer a multitude of options for the thrill seeker. Venture out below the water’s surface and you’ll enter a world even more stunning than you could have imagined. Dive in and explore the pristine waters or follow an underwater trail with markers that guide snorkelers along a reef that’s a kaleidoscope of marine life. There is also an abundance of dive shops where you can rent equipment that you can use right off the beach or on an organized boat dive. For those who prefer sports above water, rent some windsurfing equipment and take a lesson or two or rent a kayak and explore the island. Join the latest watersports trend and rent a stand-up paddleboard. Then enjoy the scenic and invigorating paddle session from Cruz Bay to Francis or Maho Bays. Rent a powerboat or sailboat to experience the offshore excitement St. John has to offer, or venture to the nearby British Virgin Islands for an islandhopping adventure. Just make sure you keep your passport handy. The many boat rental operators on the island can set you up with just about anything you like, so treat yourself to a day out at sea — whether that’s on a breezy sailboat, a cozy catamaran or a decadent luxury yacht.

The serene, crystal-clear waters that surround St. John invite visitors to relax and dive in, throw out a line, put on a snorkel or pick up a paddle. Sure, relaxing is nice, but for those who harbor a competitive spark, we have something for that, too — on surf and on turf. Running from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay may seem like a folly to anyone who has driven on Centerline Road, but don’t tell that to the more than a thousand entrants in last year’s 8 Tuff Miles road race. In 2015, 15 runners did it in under an hour. The annual Beach-to-Beach Power Swim is a spring event put together by Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park. Swimmers choose one of three courses of varying lengths, all starting at Maho Bay and ending with a beach celebration. Entries are limited and fill up early. The Paddle the Park race is the same basic threecourse format, but this one’s for stand-up paddleboarders and begins and ends at Maho Bay’s picnic pavilion. Although quantities are limited, arrangements can be made to provide rental boards to competitors. Looking to mix a good deed with some competitive action? Every summer, the St. John community supports Team River Runner in the Chaotic Kayak, which raised funds to bring wounded veterans and their families to St. John for some R&R. For the truly hardy, there’s the Love City Triathlon in the fall for individuals and relay teams. If you think you can swim a half mile, ride a bicycle 13 miles over hills and dale with a half-mile rise in elevation from sea level, and then run four miles, then this race is for you.

Racing to Success

PETER ALTER

By Willi Miller

When Peter Alter decided to quit smoking and get in shape in 1996, he didn’t realize his solo effort would become one of the hottest athletic competitions in the islands, the 8 Tuff Miles race from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay, marking its 20th anniversary in 2016.

stj 26

USVI_1516_73_John.indd 26

Alter’s time of an hour and 20 minutes was topped the next year by the winner of the first official competition at just over one hour and one minute. There were 21 runners finishing that inaugural race in 1997, to the applause of three people cheering at the finish line. After that success, the field — and the spectators waiting for them at the ball field in Coral Bay — grew steadily until 2013, when the number of entries had gone up to 1,207. In 2003, Alter set up scholarship awards for young winners. More than $50,000 in scholarship money has been set aside to date. While the race’s founder no longer makes the trek on foot, Alter is still the man in charge of recruiting volunteers and keeping the race on track.

Where were you living before relocating, and what was your profession? I relocated from Connecticut, where I worked in construction as a carpenter. Before you arrived, did you have a plan for your life on the island? No. My only plan was to be somewhere other than New England. What do you like most about living on St. John? There is a combination of many things that make living on St. John likable: the weather, the people, the pace of life here. I like the simplicity.

dog, Bo. I like woodworking projects, fixing stuff that’s broken and reconditioning something that’s worth saving. I enjoy recycling stuff. Where do you like to spend time when you vacation away from the Caribbean? Travel is education, so I enjoy traveling anywhere when I have the opportunity. I’ve been to the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Croix. Do you have a garden? I grow what I can, but that is not much. Basil grows easily here, and I grow and use it a lot. How has life on the island changed since your arrival? The number of homes and, therefore, more people and cars and trucks. The availability of most things is much better now than in 1988.

Caneel Bay’s breathtaking north shore setting inspired Laurance Rockefeller in the 1950s to preserve the natural beauty of the island by purchasing and donating land for what would become the Virgin Islands National Park. The lush grounds house has a fine-dining restaurant in an old sugar mill and a breezy beachside restaurant serving sushi. Gallows Point Resort’s cluster of one- and two-story accommodations offer a choice of harbor or ocean view. It’s an easy walk to the center of Cruz Bay, with its many shopping and dining treasures. Click on a camera icon on the virtual tour map for samples of the mesmerizing views.

At the St. John Westin Resort, guests in the 200 time-share villas and the 93 hotel rooms all enjoy the amenities of a luxury Caribbean resort with a 1,200-foot white-sand beach on Great Cruz Bay. Vacationers even have an opportunity to help the Friends of Virgin Islands National Park with Villas for the Park, linking the website to a vacation booking partner that gives the organization a percentage. Many villa managers, rental home owners and even charter yacht captains list availability on vrbo.com and airbnb.com. St. John offers plenty of dream itineraries but is definitely not a one-size-fits-all destination.
