This furniture build worked in association with the urban arts project. As urban arts is a non profit charitable organization, they had little money to allot to the purchasing of new furniture. Therefore, they asked the Interior Design students at Humber to build a piece to be donated along with their design for the proposed new space. The inspiration for the green bench grew from the idea of educating children on food and nutrition, while being able to provide them with opportunities and space to grow their own food. The piece serves as a multi-functional object where one can either sit, grow fruits and vegetables in the planter or up the lattes that run horizontally along the back, all while integrating the piece into a fence to create a sense of privacy within the urban arts yard.

Based in northern Ontario along the Georgian Bay waterfront, each student received 1 of 3 potential clients along with 1 of 4 potential sites. Multiple considerations had to be taken into account while evaluating the specific property including sun and wind patterns, the direction of views, septic system location, setbacks, and being able to orient the building in order to maximize circulation and the location of entrances - both boat or land access. Since a foundation would be unrealistic in the rocky conditions of the north, a consideration for stilts and the area underneath the structure to run services such as plumbing had to be abided by.

A desperate need for space will most certainly be a posing problem within the next hundred years. The solution is to build a design component that can be attached to the top of an existing building that could easily house a variety of different activities including a touchdown office space. The ultimate goal was to create an environment that is bio-intelligent, cautious of space consumption, generous to our environment and has the ability to create a canvas of green throughout the city.

Sephora’s “see-try-buy” methodology is one that is uniquely there own and sets them aside from any other cosmetic company. It has also become the inspiration for this competition. This store will become the playground, if you will, of cosmetic stimulation. The layout is a solution to presenting small-scaled products in an organized way, designed to engage the customers and create an interactive environment. The “see-try-buy” model becomes the only thing intrinsic in all the display presentations – this will help encourage customers to touch and test, making the process much less overwhelming. All packaging will be neatly tucked away in the drawers below the gondolas and wall units, all of which will vary in heights.
