PARTNERING WITH THE INLAND NORTHWEST to reach the poor with the love and power of the gospel so they may become God-dependent, contributing members of society.

CHANGE. That’s the word I’d like you to keep in mind as you look through this annual report because change is the distinctive of Union Gospel Mission. We are feeding and sheltering people, yes, but ultimately, we’re going far beyond that to address the underlying causes of homelessness and addiction. As you know, poverty is about so much more than money. It’s about emptiness, isolation, and a lack of purpose. Trillions of dollars have been spent in the War on Poverty since it began back in the 60s without any measurable improvement. This report, however, shows how your partnership is bringing about real change: Men, women and children are introduced to the God who created them and begin to see their worth. Through counseling and classes, wounded souls are healed from the inside out. And with a newfound sense of their potential, men and women are engaging in meaningful work. Charity alone will not break the cycle of poverty in America today, but charity that facilitates real change is ending homelessness – one person/one family at a time. Thank you for partnering with us! – PHIL ALTMEYER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

“Every meal we’ve had has been magnificent. The kids love it. Even my 3-year-old – she was 20 pounds. She’s gained 7 pounds since she’s been here, and that’s amazing. And so she’s finally eating healthy.” – CHARITY MCHAFFIE

“I had just lost everything I had...living in my car and I was just running out of money.” – ALEX DUFFY

Jeanne Ellern, a dermatology ARNP who volunteers in the UGM clinic, took one look at the bump on Ken’s nose and knew it was probably cancer. She cut off and cauterized it right there. “I was worried about it because my mom died of cancer really young. … I could never afford to get it done. If I would have let it go, it could have been real problems. Good things happen at the Mission.” – KEN BROWN, MEN’S SHELTER

From eternity, he’s carved that little hour out to allow the men to experience him and have an encounter with him. It happens every single night. Every night we bring a message of hope!” – MEN’S SHELTER CHAPLAIN RON MOLINA

194 men and women found employment.
“I could cry. I’m actually on the path that I’m supposed to take, the one God created me for. I wanted to do it in high school or right after, but I didn’t have the support. This is preparing me for my next step, which is going to be surgical tech school.” – WENDY ROSS, ON HER JOB AT PROVIDENCE HEALTH

111 women, 48 men and 65 participated in long-term recovery programs. 14
“When I came here, I found freedom. Just receiving God’s love and having his truth in my life...I didn’t have to depend on a substance anymore. The more I started to love God and myself, the more I was able to love her, and I feel like it’s changed the whole outcome of our future – being able to be the mom that I always wanted to be, that I couldn’t see when I was in my addiction.” – ELIZABETH PARTYKA (AND CELINE)

479 children attended 445 kids attended camp. “What I loved about UGM Camp this week was the challenge courses. For me it was also fun being away from home for a week. It has been an amazing week here, and I hope to come next year. I’ve had tons of fun!” – UGM CAMPER 16
UGM Camp. “I cannot say enough how wonderful the staff and counselors are. My son had never been away from home overnight and struggled being homesick, but their caring counselors and staff supported him and he had an amazing time. Thank you!” – JILL EBERLEY, PARENT OF A CAMPER 17
24,901 hours of job training
provided at UGM Thrift Stores, UGM Motors and our shelters.
“When I came to UGM, it had been over 10 years that I had not worked. I had never had a resume in my entire life. Through the Employment Ready Program, they gave me a chance to work at the Thrift Store. I’ve already succeeded in a lot of my goals: I’ve got my driver’s license, I’m paying on my child support. I love working at the Thrift Store with the environment there and how I can always tell my story to people that are down … how the Union Gospel Mission and the Lord saved my life.” – TROY WHITE, UGM THRIFT STORES EMPLOYEE

“I saw boats sitting at Union Gospel Mission Motors. So I stopped in and just asked, ‘Could I be of any benefit to you guys? I know a little bit about boats – could I be helpful?’ And four hours a week turned into a lot, lot more. But the result is people who are extremely happy with their boats, and we have provided thousands of dollars in meals and housing for the homeless, and that warms my heart. That gives me the opportunity to feel like I’m doing God’s work.” – LARRY SCOTT, UGM MOTORS VOLUNTEER 20

“I have observed the compassion that UGM extends to all of the men, women and children who come through its doors. Not only does UGM care for their immediate needs, the staff and facilities provide the opportunity for residents to acquire new skills, learn how to cope with life’s continuing challenges and rejoin our community as productive citizens. We were blessed to sponsor several rooms at the new Crisis Shelter in loving memory of my mother, Mildred Coombes. I know that our gifts and talents are being put to excellent use by UGM.” – JIM COOMBES

GERALDINE FAIT’S LATE HUSBAND, FRED, was a police officer on “skid row” in the 1950s and would transport men off the streets to the Mission for a meal and a safe night’s stay. She sponsored a room in UGM’s new Crisis Shelter under both of their names and has chosen to extend her and Fred’s compassion for the homeless even further by including UGM in her will.

I quickly discovered that the UGM board is full of individuals who have pursued excellence in various careers, including finance, medicine, education and business. I have been personally motivated by those board members, as well as the staff and the residents who exemplify this important value.” – BRAD CROCKETT, 1ST VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UGM ASSOCIATION BOARD See page 32 for list of 2016 Board of Directors.
